How twist angle inhomogeneity masks the BKT transition and the order parameter symmetry

Two-dimensional superconductors, including twisted multilayer graphene, should exhibit a BKT transition, and the $T$-dependence of the superfluid stiffness should distinguish between nodal or gapped order parameter symmetries. However, this picture dramatically changes when spatially correlated disorder is taken into account. Such correlations naturally arise in moir\'e systems due to twist angle inhomogeneities, which we model using elasticity theory. Using a random impedance network based on realistic disorder in the local $T_c$, we show that the finite-frequency conductance reveals a smeared percolative transition instead of a BKT transition. At low temperatures, the disorder can effectively obscure the distinction between nodal and fully gapped superconducting order parameters. We propose that the real part of the conductivity can be used as a key diagnostic observable to probe the relevance of correlated disorder.

Realistic Pearl vortices in thin film superconductors

We analyze magnetic field profiles of vortices in thin-film superconductors, shedding new light on this old and presumed settled problem. In sufficiently thin films with realistic Ginzburg-Landau parameter $\kappa = 1/\sqrt{2}$, the magnetic screening around a vortex core is neither exponential -- as is expected in bulk -- nor the power-law that was predicted by Pearl. Instead, a universal curve for the magnetic field variation appears that scales with the sample thickness. The thickness dependence is consistent with the seminal Pearl length, and serves as an indication of the reduced magnetic field screening present in two-dimensional superconductor. Finally, we quantify the crossover from bulk-like to thin superconductors, and establish different screening length-scales relevant for the analysis of experimental data.

Spin-dependent anisotropic electron-phonon coupling in KTaO$_3$

KTaO$_3$ (KTO) is an incipient ferroelectric, characterized by a softening of the lowest transverse optical (TO) mode with decreasing temperature. Cooper pairing in the recently discovered KTO-based heterostructures has been proposed to be mediated by the soft TO mode. Here we study the electron coupling to the zone-center odd-parity modes of bulk KTO by means of relativistic Density Functional Perturbation Theory (DFPT). The coupling to the soft TO mode is by far the largest, with comparable contributions from both intraband and interband processes. Remarkably, we find that for this mode, spin-non-conserving matrix elements are particularly relevant. We develop a three-band microscopic model with spin-orbit coupled $t_{2g}$ orbitals that reproduces the main features of the ab initio results. For the highest energy band, the coupling can be understood as a "dynamical" isotropic Rashba effect. In contrast, for the two lowest bands, the Rashba-like coupling becomes strongly anisotropic. The DFPT protocol implemented here enables the calculation of the full electron-phonon coupling matrix projected onto any mode of interest, and it is easily applicable to other systems.

Angular momentum of vortex-core Majorana zero modes

Majorana zero modes (MZMs) are highly sought-after states with a possible application in quantum computation. Here, we show that vortex-core MZMs can carry a nontrivial angular momentum. This establishes new `flavors' of Majorana modes, independent of the Chern classification of topological superconductors. The MZM angular momentum is explicitly calculated for a microscopic model of a $d+id$ superconductor placed on a three-dimensional topological insulator ($d+id+\phantom{}$Dirac model) using both exact diagonalization and the Chebyshev expansion. We classify all possible quantum numbers of MZMs depending on the windings of the order parameter and underlying normal state. The topological protection of the MZM is set by the bulk gap, quasiparticle poisoning by trivial in-gap states, and its localization length. All these severely limit the stability of MZMs in the $d+id+\phantom{}$Dirac model, in contrast to earlier claims. Nevertheless, the possibility of having different flavors of MZM - in the form of angular momentum or something else - can provide a unique path forward for the study of MZMs.

Something about the Mechanism of Induction Phenomena: The forgotten work of Berta de Haas-Lorentz on diamagnetism in superconductors

In 1925, Dr. Geertruida Luberta "Berta" de Haas-Lorentz published the paper "Iets over het mechanisme van inductieverschijnselen" in the journal Physica. Her paper was the first to discuss perfect diamagnetism of superconductors, eight years before the discovery of the Meissner effect, when the essential difference between the two phenomena was not understood. Unfortunately, her work was almost forgotten by the scientific community. To counter this, we translate her seminal 1925 paper from Dutch into English. We provide an overview of the life of Dr. De Haas-Lorentz, and comment on her pioneering contribution to the theory of superconductivity.

Thermodynamic phase diagram of the competition between superconductivity and charge order in cuprates

We argue that there is a special doping point in the phase diagram of cuprates, such that the condensation of holes into a charge-ordered and into a superconducting phase are degenerate in energy but with an energy barrier in between. We present a Monte Carlo simulation of this problem without and with quenched disorder. While in the clean case charge order and superconductivity are separated by a first-order line which is nearly independent of temperature, in the presence of quenched disorder, charge order is fragmented into domains separated by superconducting filaments reminiscent of the supersolid behavior in $^4$He. The resulting phase diagram is in good agreement with the experiments.

Charge-Density Waves vs. Superconductivity: Some Results and Future Perspectives

Increasing experimental evidence suggests the occurrence of filamentary superconductivity in different (quasi) two-dimensional physical systems. In this piece of work, we discuss the proposal that under certain circumstances, this occurrence may be related to the competition with a phase characterized by charge ordering in the form of charge-density waves. We provide a brief summary of experimental evidence supporting our argument in two paradigmatic classes of materials, namely transition metal dichalcogenides and cuprates superconductors. We present a simple Ginzburg-Landau two-order-parameters model as a starting point to address the study of such competition. We finally discuss the outcomes of a more sophisticated model, already presented in the literature and encoding the presence of impurities, and how it can be further improved in order to really address the interplay between charge-density waves and superconductivity and the possible occurrence of filamentary superconductivity at the domain walls between different charge-ordered regions.

Superfluid response of two-dimensional filamentary superconductors

Different classes of low-dimensional superconducting systems exhibit an inhomogeneous filamentary superconducting condensate whose macroscopic coherence still needs to be fully investigated and understood. Here we present a thorough analysis of the superfluid response of a prototypical filamentary superconductor embedded in a {two-dimensional} metallic matrix. By mapping the system into an exactly solvable random impedance network, we show how the dissipative (reactive) response of the system non-trivially depends on both the macroscopic and microscopic characteristics of the metallic (superconducting) fraction. We compare our calculations with resonant-microwave transport measurements performed on LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ heterostructures over an extended range of temperatures and carrier densities finding that the filamentary character of superconductivity accounts for unusual peculiar features of the experimental data.

Anisotropic Rashba coupling to polar modes in KTaO3

Motivated by the discovery of superconductivity in KTaO3-based heterostructures, we study a pairing mechanism based on spin-orbit assisted coupling between the conduction electrons and the ferroelectric modes present in the material. We use ab initio frozen-phonon computations to show a linear-in-momentum Rashba-like coupling with a strong angular dependence in momentum for the lower j=3/2 manifold, deviating from the conventional isotropic Rashba model. This implies the Rashba-like interaction with the polar modes has substantial L=3 cubic harmonic corrections, which we quantify for each electronic band. The strong anisotropy of the Rashba interaction is captured by a microscopic toy model for the t2g electrons. We find its origin to be the angular dependence in electronic momentum imposed by the kinetic term on the degenerate j=3/2 manifold. A comparison between the toy model and ab initio results indicate that additional symmetry allowed terms beyond odd-parity spin-conserving inter-orbital hopping processes are needed to describe the Rashba-like polar interaction between the electrons and the soft ferroelectric mode.
