Sensitivity of Quantum Motion for Classically Chaotic Systems

We discuss the behavior of fidelity for a classically chaotic quantum system in the metallic regime. We show the existence of a critical value of the perturbation below which the exponential decay of fidelity is determined by the width of the Breit-Wigner distribution and above which the quantum decay follows the classical one which is ruled by the Lyapunov exponent. The independence of the decay {\it rate} from the perturbation strength derives from the similarity of the quantum and classical relaxation process inside the Heisenberg time scale.

From the Fermi Liquid Towards the Wigner Solid in Two Dimensions

The quantum-classical crossover from the Fermi liquid towards the Wigner solid is numerically revisited, considering small square lattice models where electrons interact via a Coulomb U/r potential. We review a series of exact numerical results obtained in the presence of weak site disorder for fully polarized electrons (spinless fermions) and when the spin degrees of freedom are included. A novel intermediate regime between the Fermi system of weakly interacting localized particles and the correlated Wigner solid is obtained. A detailed analysis of the non disordered case shows that the intermediate ground state is a solid entangled with an excited liquid. For electrons in two dimensions, this raises the question of the existence of an unnoticed intermediate liquid-solid phase. Using the Coulomb energy to kinetic energy ratio r_s ~ U ~ n_s^{-1/2}, we discuss certain analogies between the numerical results obtained as a function of U for a few particles and the low temperature behaviors obtained as a function of the carrier density n_s in two dimensional electron gases. Notably, the new ``exotic state of matter'' numerically observed at low energies in small clusters occurs at the same intermediate ratios r_s than the unexpected low temperature metallic behavior characterizing dilute electron gases. The finite size effects in the limit of strong disorder are eventually studied in the last section, providing two numerical evidences that the weak coupling Fermi limit is delimited by a second order quantum phase transition when one increases U.

Efficient Quantum Computing of Complex Dynamics

We propose a quantum algorithm which uses the number of qubits in an optimal way and efficiently simulates a physical model with rich and complex dynamics described by the quantum sawtooth map. The numerical study of the effect of static imperfections in the quantum computer hardware shows that the main elements of the phase space structures are accurately reproduced up to a time scale which is polynomial in the number of qubits. The errors generated by these imperfections are more dangerous than the errors of random noise in gate operations.

Quantum Fractal Fluctuations

We numerically analyse quantum survival probability fluctuations in an open, classically chaotic system. In a quasi-classical regime, and in the presence of classical mixed phase space, such fluctuations are believed to exhibit a fractal pattern, on the grounds of semiclassical arguments. In contrast, we work in a classical regime of complete chaoticity, and in a deep quantum regime of strong localization. We provide evidence that fluctuations are still fractal, due to the slow, purely quantum algebraic decay in time produced by dynamical localization. Such findings considerably enlarge the scope of the existing theory.

Spin Polarized Ground State for Interacting Electrons in Two Dimensions

We study numerically the ground state magnetization for clusters of interacting electrons in two dimensions in the regime where the single particle wavefunctions are localized by disorder. It is found that the Coulomb interaction leads to a spontaneous ground state magnetization. For a constant electronic density, the total spin increases linearly with the number of particles, suggesting a ferromagnetic ground state in the thermodynamic limit. The magnetization is suppressed when the single particle states become delocalized.

Magnetic Field Effect for Two Electrons in a Two Dimensional Random Potential

We study the problem of two particles with Coulomb repulsion in a two-dimensional disordered potential in the presence of a magnetic field. For the regime, when without interaction all states are well localized, it is shown that above a critical excitation energy electron pairs become delocalized by interaction. The transition between the localized and delocalized regimes goes in the same way as the metal-insulator transition at the mobility edge in the three dimensional Anderson model with broken time reversal symmetry.

Emergence of Fermi-Dirac Thermalization in the Quantum Computer Core

We model an isolated quantum computer as a two-dimensional lattice of qubits (spin halves) with fluctuations in individual qubit energies and residual short-range inter-qubit couplings. In the limit when fluctuations and couplings are small compared to the one-qubit energy spacing, the spectrum has a band structure and we study the quantum computer core (central band) with the highest density of states. Above a critical inter-qubit coupling strength, quantum chaos sets in, leading to quantum ergodicity of eigenstates in an isolated quantum computer. The onset of chaos results in the interaction induced dynamical thermalization and the occupation numbers well described by the Fermi-Dirac distribution. This thermalization destroys the noninteracting qubit structure and sets serious requirements for the quantum computer operability.

Quantum Poincare' recurrences in microwave ionization of Rydberg atoms

We study the time dependence of the ionization probability of Rydberg atoms driven by a microwave field. The quantum survival probability follows the classical one up to the Heisenberg time and then decays inversely proportional to time, due to tunneling and localization effects. We provide parameter values which should allow one to observe such decay in laboratory experiments. Relations to the $1/f$ noise are also discussed.

Signatures of an intermediate 2d Coulomb phase at low temperatures

The study of the ground state of spinless fermions in 2d disordered clusters (Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 83}, 1826 (1999)) has suggested the existence of a new quantum phase for intermediate Coulomb energy to kinetic energy ratios $r_s$. Exact diagonalization of the same small clusters show that its low energy excitations (quantum ergodicity above a few ``hexatic'' excitations characterized by oriented currents) significantly differ from those occuring in the Fermi glass (weak $r_s$) and in the pinned Wigner crystal (large $r_s$). The ``hexatic'' excitations vanish for temperatures of order of the Fermi temperature.

Compressibility crossover and quantum opening of a gap for two dimensional disordered clusters with Coulomb repulsion

Using Hartree-Fock orbitals with residual Coulomb repulsion, we study spinless fermions in a two dimensional random potential. When we increase the system size $L$ at fixed particle density, the size dependence of the average inverse compressibility exhibits a smooth crossover from a $1/L^2$ towards a 1/L decay when the Coulomb energy to Fermi energy ratio $r_s$ increases from 0 to 3. In contrast, the distribution of the first energy excitation displays a sharp Poisson-Wigner-like transition at $r_s \approx 1$.

Delocalized Coulomb phase in two dimensions

Extending finite size scaling theory to the many body ground state, one finds that Coulomb repulsion can drive a system of spinless fermions in a random potential from the Anderson insulator (Fermi glass of localized states) towards a new extended phase in dimension $d=2$. The transition occurs at a Coulomb energy to Fermi energy ratio $r_s \approx 4$, where a change in the nature of the persistent currents has been previously observed. Relevance to the recently observed $2d$ metallic phase is suggested.

Quantum Poincare Recurrences for Hydrogen Atom in a Microwave Field

We study the time dependence of the ionization probability of Rydberg atoms driven by a microwave field, both in classical and in quantum mechanics. The quantum survival probability follows the classical one up to the Heisenberg time and then decays algebraically as P(t) ~ 1/t. This decay law derives from the exponentially long times required to escape from some region of the phase space, due to tunneling and localization effects. We also provide parameter values which should allow to observe such decay in laboratory experiments.

Metallic phase between the Fermi glass and the Wigner crystal in two dimensions

For intermediate Coulomb energy to Fermi energy ratios $r_s$, spinless fermions in a two-dimensional random potential form a new quantum phase, different from the Fermi glass (weakly interacting Anderson localized states) and the Wigner crystal (regular array of charges pinned by the disorder). The intermediate phase is characterized by an ordered flow of persistent currents with a typical value decreasing with excitation energy. Extending finite size scaling analysis to the many body ground state, we find that electron-electron interactions can drive the Fermi glass towards an intermediate metallic phase (Coulomb metal).

Quantum opening of the Coulomb gap in two dimensions

For a constant density of spinless fermions in strongly disordered two dimensional clusters, the energy level spacing between the ground state and the first excitation is studied for increasing system sizes. The average indicates a smooth opening of the gap when the Coulomb energy to Fermi energy ratio $r_s$ increases from 0 to 3, while the distribution exhibits a sharp Poisson-Wigner-like transition at $r_s \approx 1$. The results are related to the transition from Mott to Efros-Shklovskii hopping conductivity recently observed at a similar ratio $r_s$.

A new quantum phase in two dimensions

For intermediate Coulomb energy to Fermi energy ratios $r_s$, spinless fermions in a random potential form a new quantum phase which is different from the Fermi glass and the Wigner crystal. From a numerical study of small clusters, we show that this phase is characterized by an ordered flow of enhanced persistent currents and occurs for $r_s$ values where a metallic phase has been observed in two dimensions.

Chaotic dynamics of a classical radiant cavity

The statistical properties of a classical electromagnetic field in interaction with matter are numerically investigated on a one-dimensional model of a radiant cavity, conservative and with finite total energy. Our results suggest a trend towards equipartition of energy, with the relaxation times of the normal modes of the cavity increasing with the mode frequency according to a law, the form of which depends on the shape of the charge distribution.

For intermediate Coulomb energy to Fermi energy ratios $r_s$, spinless fermions in a random potential form a new quantum phase which is nor a Fermi glass, neither a Wigner crystal. Studying small clusters, we show that this phase gives rise to an ordered flow of enhanced persistent currents, for disorder strength and ratios $r_s$ where a metallic phase has been recently observed in two dimensions.

New state of the matter between the Fermi glass and the Wigner crystal in two dimensions

Spinless fermions with Coulomb interaction in a square disordered lattice form a new state of the matter which is nor a Fermi glass, neither a Wigner crystal for intermediate Coulomb interaction. From a numerical study of small clusters, we find that this new state occurs between the two critical carrier densities where insulator-metal-insulator transitions of a hole gas have been observed in GaAs.
