Toricness and smoothness criteria for spherical varieties

We prove equivalent numerical conditions for a complete spherical variety to admit a toric structure, and for the smoothness of an arbitrary spherical variety along any given G-orbit. The conditions are in terms of spherical skeletons, a coarse ''subset'' of the Luna-Vust data of a spherical variety. Our smoothness criterion improves upon classical criteria by removing the dependency on external reference tables.

The generalised Mukai conjecture for spherical varieties

We prove the generalised Mukai conjecture for $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial spherical Fano varieties. In this case, a stronger inequality holds featuring an extra term - the minimum absolute complexity of a log Calabi-Yau pair - which measures how close the Fano variety is to being toric.

The Manin-Peyre conjecture for smooth spherical Fano threefolds

The Manin-Peyre conjecture is established for smooth spherical Fano threefolds of semisimple rank one and type N. Together with the previously solved case T and the toric cases, this covers all types of smooth spherical Fano threefolds. The case N features a number of structural novelties; most notably, one may lose regularity of the ambient toric variety, the height conditions may contain fractional exponents, and it may be necessary to exclude a thin subset with exceptionally many rational points from the count, as otherwise Manin's conjecture in its original form would turn out to be incorrect.

Existence of equivariant models of spherical varieties and other G-varieties

Let $k_0$ be a field of characteristic $0$ with algebraic closure $k$. Let $G$ be a connected reductive $k$-group, and let $Y$ be a spherical variety over $k$ (a spherical homogeneous space or a spherical embedding). Let $G_0$ be a $k_0$-model ($k_0$-form) of $G$. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a $G_0$-equivariant $k_0$-model of $Y$.

Luna-Vust invariants of Cox rings and skeletons of spherical varieties

Given the Luna-Vust invariants of a spherical variety, we determine the Luna-Vust invariants of the spectrum of its Cox ring. In particular, we deduce an explicit description of the divisor class group of the Cox ring. It follows that every spherical variety admits iteration of Cox rings. Moreover, we obtain a combinatorial proof of the fact that the Cox ring is determined by the spherical skeleton, which is a known result following from the description of the Cox ring due to Brion. Finally, we show that a conjectural combinatorial smoothness criterion can be reduced to the case of a factorial affine spherical variety with a fixed point.

Equivariant models of spherical varieties

Let $G$ be a connected semisimple group over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic 0. Let $Y=G/H$ be a spherical homogeneous space of $G$, and let $Y'$ be a spherical embedding of $Y$. Let $k_0$ be a subfield of $k$. Let $G_0$ be a $k_0$ -model ($k_0$-form) of $G$. We show that if $G_0$ is an inner form of a split group and if the subgroup $H$ of $G$ is spherically closed, then $Y$ admits a $G_0$-equivariant $k_0$-model. If we replace the assumption that $H$ is spherically closed by the stronger assumption that $H$ coincides with its normalizer in $G$, then $Y$ and $Y'$ admit compatible $G_0$-equivariant $k_0$-models, and these models are unique.

Manin's conjecture for certain spherical threefolds

We prove Manin's conjecture on the asymptotic behavior of the number of rational points of bounded anticanonical height for a spherical threefold with canonical singularities and two infinite families of spherical threefolds with log terminal singularities. Moreover, we show that one of these families does not satisfy a conjecture of Batyrev and Tschinkel on the leading constant in the asymptotic formula. Our proofs are based on the universal torsor method, using Brion's description of Cox rings of spherical varieties.

Spherical varieties with the $A_k$-property

An algebraic variety is said to have the $A_k$-property if any $k$ points are contained in some common affine open neighbourhood. A theorem of Włodarczyk states that a normal variety has the $A_2$-property if and only if it admits a closed embedding into a toric variety. Spherical varieties can be regarded as a generalization of toric varieties, but they do not have the $A_2$-property in general. We provide a combinatorial criterion for the $A_k$-property of spherical varieties by combining the theory of bunched rings with the Luna-Vust theory of spherical embeddings.

On the algebraic stringy Euler number

We are interested in stringy invariants of singular projective algebraic varieties satisfying a strict monotonicity with respect to elementary birational modifications in the Mori program. We conjecture that the algebraic stringy Euler number is one of such invariants. In the present paper, we prove this conjecture for varieties having an action of a connected algebraic group G and admitting equivariant desingularizations with only finitely many G-orbits. In particular, we prove our conjecture for arbitrary projective spherical varieties.

The generalized Mukai conjecture for symmetric varieties

We associate to any complete spherical variety $X$ a certain nonnegative rational number $\wp(X)$, which we conjecture to satisfy the inequality $\wp(X) \le \operatorname{dim} X - \operatorname{rank} X$ with equality holding if and only if $X$ is isomorphic to a toric variety. We show that, for spherical varieties, our conjecture implies the generalized Mukai conjecture on the pseudo-index of smooth Fano varieties due to Bonavero, Casagrande, Debarre, and Druel. We also deduce from our conjecture a smoothness criterion for spherical varieties. It follows from the work of Pasquier that our conjecture holds for horospherical varieties. We are able to prove our conjecture for symmetric varieties.

Gorenstein spherical Fano varieties

We obtain a combinatorial description of Gorenstein spherical Fano varieties in terms of certain polytopes, generalizing the combinatorial description of Gorenstein toric Fano varieties by reflexive polytopes and its extension to Gorenstein horospherical Fano varieties due to Pasquier. Using this description, we show that the rank of the Picard group of an arbitrary $d$-dimensional $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial Gorenstein spherical Fano variety is bounded by $2d$. This paper also contains an overview of the description of the natural representative of the anticanonical divisor class of a spherical variety due to Brion.

Homogeneous spherical data of orbits in spherical embeddings

Let $G$ be a connected reductive complex algebraic group. Luna assigned to any spherical homogeneous space $G/H$ a combinatorial object called a homogeneous spherical datum. By a theorem of Losev, this object uniquely determines $G/H$ up to $G$-equivariant isomorphism. In this paper, we determine the homogeneous spherical datum of a $G$-orbit $X_0$ in a spherical embedding $G/H \hookrightarrow X$. As an application, we obtain a description of the colored fan associated to the spherical embedding $X_0 \hookrightarrow \bar{X_0}$.

The Cox ring of a spherical embedding

Let G be a connected reductive group and G/H a spherical homogeneous space. We show that the ideal of relations between a natural set of generators of the Cox ring of a G-embedding of G/H can be obtained by homogenizing certain equations which depend only on the homogeneous space. Using this result, we describe some examples of spherical homogeneous spaces such that the Cox ring of any of their G-embeddings is defined by one equation.
