Optimal stochastic unraveling of disordered open quantum systems: application to driven-dissipative photonic lattices

We propose an efficient numerical method to compute configuration averages of observables in disordered open quantum systems whose dynamics can be unraveled via stochastic trajectories. We prove that the optimal sampling of trajectories and disorder configurations is simply achieved by considering one random disorder configuration for each individual trajectory. As a first application, we exploit the present method to the study the role of disorder on the physics of the driven-dissipative Bose-Hubbard model in two different regimes: (i) for strong interactions, we explore the dissipative physics of fermionized bosons in disordered one-dimensional chains; (ii) for weak interactions, we investigate the role of on-site inhomogeneities on a first-order dissipative phase transition in a two-dimensional square lattice.

Critical slowing down in driven-dissipative Bose-Hubbard lattices

We theoretically explore the dynamical properties of a first-order dissipative phase transition in coherently driven Bose-Hubbard systems, describing, e.g., lattices of coupled nonlinear optical cavities. Via stochastic trajectory calculations based on the truncated Wigner approximation, we investigate the dynamical behavior as a function of system size for 1D and 2D square lattices in the regime where mean-field theory predicts nonlinear bistability. We show that a critical slowing down emerges for increasing number of sites in 2D square lattices, while it is absent in 1D arrays. We characterize the peculiar properties of the collective phases in the critical region.

Anderson transition of cold atoms with synthetic spin-orbit coupling in two-dimensional speckle potentials

We investigate the metal-insulator transition occurring in two-dimensional (2D) systems of noninteracting atoms in the presence of artificial spin-orbit interactions and a spatially correlated disorder generated by laser speckles. Based on a high order discretization scheme, we calculate the precise position of the mobility edge and verify that the transition belongs to the symplectic universality class. We show that the mobility edge depends strongly on the mixing angle between Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit couplings. For equal couplings a non-power-law divergence is found, signaling the crossing to the orthogonal class, where such a 2D transition is forbidden.

Anderson localization of ultracold atoms: Where is the mobility edge?

Recent experiments on non-interacting ultra-cold atoms in correlated disorder have yielded conflicting results regarding the so-called mobility edge, i.e. the energy threshold separating Anderson localized from diffusive states. At the same time, there are theoretical indications that the experimental data overestimate the position of this critical energy, sometimes by a large amount. The non-trivial effect of anisotropy in the spatial correlations of experimental speckle potentials have been put forward as a possible cause for such discrepancy. Using extensive numerical simulations we show that the effect of anisotropy alone is not sufficient to explain the experimental data. In particular, we find that, for not-too-strong anisotropy, realistic disorder configurations are essentially identical to the isotropic case, modulo a simple rescaling of the energies.

Phase diagram of the 3D Anderson model for uncorrelated speckle potentials

We investigate the localization properties of atoms moving in a three-dimensional optical lattice in the presence of an uncorrelated disorder potential having the same probability distribution $P(V)$ as laser speckles. We find that the disorder-averaged (single-particle) Green's function, calculated via the coherent potential approximation, is in very good agreement with exact numerics. Using the transfer-matrix method, we compute the phase diagram in the energy-disorder plane and show that its peculiar shape can be understood from the self-consistent theory of localization. In particular, we recover the large asymmetry in the position of the mobility edge for blue and red speckles, which was recently observed numerically for correlated speckle potentials.

Mobility edge for cold atoms in laser speckle potentials

Using the transfer matrix method, we numerically compute the precise position of the mobility edge of atoms exposed to a laser speckle potential, and study its dependence vs. the disorder strength and correlation function. Our results deviate significantly from previous theoretical estimates using an approximate self-consistent approach of localization. In particular we find that the position of the mobility edge in blue-detuned speckles is much lower than in the red-detuned counterpart, pointing out the crucial role played by the asymmetric on-site distribution of speckle patterns.

Bose-Hubbard Model: Relation Between Driven-Dissipative Steady-States and Equilibrium Quantum Phases

We present analytical solutions for the mean-field master equation of the driven-dissipative Bose-Hubbard model for cavity photons, in the limit of both weak pumping and weak dissipation. Instead of pure Mott insulator states, we find statistical mixtures with the same second-order coherence as a Fock state with n photons, but a mean photon number of n/2. These mixed states occur when n pump photons have the same energy as n interacting photons inside the nonlinear cavity and survive up to a critical tunneling coupling strength, above which a crossover to classical coherent state takes place. We also explain the origin of both antibunching and superbunching predicted by P-representation mean-field theory at higher pumping and dissipation. In particular, we show that the strongly correlated region of the associated phase diagram cannot be described within the semiclassical Gross-Pitaevski approach.

Low-dimensional physics of ultracold gases with bound states and the sine-Gordon model

One-dimensional systems of interacting atoms are an ideal laboratory to study the Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition. In the renormalization group picture there is essentially a two-parameter phase diagram to explore. We first present how detailed experiments have shown direct evidence for the theoretical treatment of this transition. Then generalization to the case of two-component systems with bound state formation is discussed. Trimer formation in the asymmetric attractive Hubbard model involve in a crucial way this kind of physics.

Steady-state phases and tunneling-induced instabilities in the driven-dissipative Bose-Hubbard model

We determine the steady-state phases of a driven-dissipative Bose-Hubbard model, describing, e.g., an array of coherently pumped nonlinear cavities with a finite photon lifetime. Within a mean-field master equation approach using exact quantum solutions for the one-site problem, we show that the system exhibits a tunneling-induced transition between monostable and bistable phases. We characterize the corresponding quantum correlations, highlighting the essential differences with respect to the equilibrium case. We also find collective excitations with a flat energy-momentum dispersion over the entire Brillouin zone that trigger modulational instabilities at specific wavevectors.

Anderson localization of pairs in bichromatic optical lattices

We investigate the formation of bound states made of two interacting atoms moving in a one dimensional (1D) quasi-periodic optical lattice. We derive the quantum phase diagram for Anderson localization of both attractively and repulsively bound pairs. We calculate the pair binding energy and show analytically that its behavior as a function of the interaction strength depends crucially on the nature -extended, multi-fractal, localized- of the single-particle atomic states. Experimental implications of our results are discussed.

Fermionic trimers in spin-dependent optical lattices

We investigate the formation of three-body bound states (trimers) in two-component Fermi gases confined in one dimensional optical lattice with spin-dependent tunneling rates. The binding energy and the effective mass of the trimer are obtained from the solution of the Mattis integral equation generalized to the case of unequal Bloch masses. We show that this equation admits multiple solutions corresponding to excited bound states, which are only stable for large mass asymmetry.

Landau-Zener sweeps and sudden quenches in coupled Bose-Hubbard chains

We simulate numerically the dynamics of strongly correlated bosons in a two-leg ladder subject to a time-dependent energy bias between the two chains. When all atoms are initially in the leg with higher energy, we find a drastic reduction of the inter-chain particle transfer for slow linear sweeps, in quantitative agreement with recent experiments. This effect is preceded by a rapid broadening of the quasi-momentum distribution of atoms, signaling the presence of a bath of low-energy excitations in the chains. We further investigate the scenario of quantum quenches to fixed values of the energy bias. We find that for large enough density the momentum distribution relaxes to that of an equilibrium thermal state with the same energy.

Luttinger liquid of trimers in Fermi gases with unequal masses

We investigate one dimensional attractive Fermi gases in spin-dependent optical lattices. We show that three-body bound states - "trimers" - exist as soon as the two tunneling rates are different. We calculate the binding energy and the effective mass of a single trimer. We then show numerically that for finite and commensurate densities $n_\uparrow=n_\downarrow/2$ an energy gap appears, implying that the gas is a one-component Luttinger liquid of trimers with suppressed superfluid ordering. The boundaries of this novel phase are given. We discuss experimental situations to test our predictions.

Multi-particle composites in density-imbalanced quantum fluids

We consider two-component one-dimensional quantum gases with density imbalance. While generically such fluids are two-component Luttinger liquids, we show that if the ratio of the densities is a rational number, p/q, and mass asymmetry between components is sufficiently strong, one of the two eigenmodes acquires a gap. The gapped phase corresponds to (algebraic) ordering of (p+q)-particle composites. In particular, for attractive mixtures, this implies that the superconducting correlations are destroyed. We illustrate our predictions by numerical simulations of the fermionic Hubbard model with hopping asymmetry.

Equation of state and effective mass of the unitary Fermi gas in a 1D periodic potential

By solving the Bogoliubov -- de Gennes equations at zero temperature, we study the effects of a one-dimensional optical lattice on the behavior of a superfluid Fermi gas at unitarity. We show that, due to the lattice, at low densities the gas becomes highly compressible and the effective mass is large, with a consequent significant reduction of the sound velocity. We discuss the role played by the lattice in the formation of molecules and the emergence of two-dimensional effects in the equation of state. Predictions for the density profiles and for the frequency of the collective oscillations in the presence of harmonic trapping are also given.
