Zel'dovich amplification in a superconducting circuit

Zel'dovich proposed that electromagnetic (EM) waves with angular momentum reflected from a rotating metallic, lossy cylinder will be amplified. However, we are still lacking a direct experimental EM-wave verification of this fifty-year old prediction due to the challenging conditions in which the phenomenon manifests itself: the mechanical rotation frequency of the cylinder must be comparable with the EM oscillation frequency. Here we propose an experimental approach that solves this issue and is predicted to lead to a measurable Zel'dovich amplification with existing superconducting circuit technology. We design a superconducting circuit with low frequency EM modes that couple through free-space to a magnetically levitated and spinning micro-sphere placed at the center of the circuit. We theoretically estimate the circuit EM mode gain and show that rotation of the micro-sphere can lead to experimentally observable amplification, thus paving the way for the first EM-field experimental demonstration of Zel'dovich amplification.

On the decoherence effect of a stochastic gravitational perturbation on scalar matter and the possibility of its interferometric detection

We present a general master equation for the quantum dynamics of a scalar bosonic particle interacting with an external weak and stochastic gravitational field. The dynamics predicts decoherence in position as well as in momentum. We show how the master equation reproduces the results present in the literature by taking appropriate limits, thus explaining the apparent contradiction in their dynamical description. We apply our model to a matter wave experiment, providing a practical formula for determining of the magnitude of gravitational decoherence. We compare it with the standard experimental sources of decoherence.

Acceleration sensing with magnetically levitated oscillators above a superconductor

We experimentally demonstrate stable trapping of a permanent magnet sphere above a lead superconductor, in vacuum pressures of $4 \times 10^{-8}$~mbar. The levitating magnet behaves as a harmonic oscillator, with frequencies in the 4-31~Hz range detected, and shows promise to be an ultrasensitive acceleration sensor. We directly apply an acceleration to the magnet with a current carrying wire, which we use to measure a background noise of $\sim 10^{-10} \ \text{m}/\sqrt{\text{Hz}}$ at 30.75~Hz frequency. With current experimental parameters, we find an acceleration sensitivity of $S_a^{1/2} = 1.2 \pm 0.2 \times 10^{-10} \ \text{g}/\sqrt{\text{Hz}}$, for a thermal noise limited system. By considering a 300~mK environment, at a background helium pressure of $1 \times 10^{-10}$~mbar, acceleration sensitivities of $S_a^{1/2} \sim 3 \times 10^{-15} \ \text{g}/\sqrt{\text{Hz}}$ could be possible with ideal conditions and vibration isolation. To feasibly measure with such a sensitivity, feedback cooling must be implemented.

Talbot--Lau effect beyond the point-particle approximation

Recent progress in matter-wave interferometry aims to directly probe the quantum properties of matter on ever increasing scales. However, in order to perform interferometric experiments with massive mesoscopic objects, taking into account the constraints on the experimental set-ups, the point-like particle approximation needs to be cast aside. In this work, we consider near-field interferometry based on the Talbot effects with a single optical grating for large spherical particles beyond the point-particle approximation. We account for the suppression of the coherent grating effect and, at the same time, the enhancement of the decoherence effects due to scattering and absorption of grating photons.

The inverse Born problem in contextual probability theories: quantum spin and continuous random variables

We revise contextual probability theory and the associated inverse Born problem, solved by the Quantum-Like Representation Algorithm (QLRA) in case of two discrete random variables. After pointing out the special feature and limitations of QLRA for two binary random variables, we generalize the QLRA procedure to solve the inverse Born problem to the case of three binary random variables. We analyze the quantum spin model in the light of our results and showed that can be easily obtained from a contextual probability model. We furthermore study the inverse Born problem in the case of two continuous random variables, exploiting the general idea underlying QLRA.

Stochastic unravellings of non-Markovian completely positive and trace preserving maps

We consider open quantum systems with factorized initial states, providing the structure of the reduced system dynamics, in terms of environment cumulants. We show that such completely positive (CP) and trace preserving (TP) maps can be unraveled by linear stochastic Schrödinger equations (SSEs) characterized by sets of colored stochastic processes (with n-th order cumulants). We obtain both the conditions such that the SSEs provide CPTP dynamics, and those for unraveling an open system dynamics. We then focus on Gaussian non-Markovian unravellings, whose known structure displays a functional derivative. We provide a novel description that replaces the functional derivative with a recursive operatorial structure. Moreover, for the family of quadratic bosonic Hamiltonians, we are able to provide an explicit operatorial dependence for the unravelling.

Recursive approach for non-Markovian time-convolutionless master equations

We consider a general open system dynamics and we provide a recursive method to derive the associated non-Markovian master equation in a perturbative series. The approach relies on a momenta expansion of the open system evolution. Unlike previous perturbative approaches of this kind, the method presented in this paper provides a recursive definition of each perturbative term. Furthermore, we give an intuitive diagrammatic description of each term of the series, which pro- vides an useful analytical tool to build them and to derive their structure in terms of commutators and anticommutators. We eventually apply our formalism to the evolution of the observables of the reduced system, by showing how the method can be applied to the adjoint master equation, and by developing a diagrammatic description of the associated series.

Gravity induced wave function collapse

Starting from an idea of S.L. Adler~\cite{Adler2015}, we develop a novel model of gravity-induced spontaneous wave-function collapse. The collapse is driven by complex stochastic fluctuations of the spacetime metric. After deriving the fundamental equations, we prove the collapse and amplification mechanism, the two most important features of a consistent collapse model. Under reasonable simplifying assumptions, we constrain the strength $ξ$ of the complex metric fluctuations with available experimental data. We show that $ξ\geq 10^{-26}$ in order for the model to guarantee classicality of macro-objects, and at the same time $ξ\leq 10^{-20}$ in order not to contradict experimental evidence. As a comparison, in the recent discovery of gravitational waves in the frequency range 35 to 250 Hz, the (real) metric fluctuations reach a peak of $ξ\sim 10^{-21}$.

Colored and Dissipative Continuous Spontaneous Localization model and Bounds from Matter-Wave Interferometry

Matter-wave interferometry is a direct test of the quantum superposition principle for massive systems, and of collapse models. Here we show that the bounds placed by matter-wave interferometry depend weakly on the details of the collapse mechanism. Specifically, we compute the bounds on the CSL model and its variants, provided by the the KDTL interferometry experiment of Arndt's group [Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2013, 15, 14696-14700], which currently holds the record of largest mass in interferometry. We also show that the CSL family of models emerges naturally by considering a minimal set of assumptions. In particular, we construct the dynamical map for the colored and dissipative Continuous Spontaneous Localization (cdCSL) model, which reduces to the CSL model and variants in the appropriate limits. In addition, we discuss the measure of macroscopicity based on the cdCSL model.

General Galilei Covariant Gaussian Maps

We characterize general non-Markovian Gaussian maps which are covariant under Galilean transformations. In particular, we characterize translational and Galilean covariant maps and show that they reduce to the known Holevo result in the Markovian limit. We apply the results to discuss measures of macroscopicity based on classicalization maps, specifically addressing dissipation, Galilean covariance and non-Markovianity. We further suggest a possible generalization of the macroscopicity measure defined in Nimmrichter and Hornbergerl. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 16 (2013)].
