Properly Integral Polynomials over the Ring of Integer-valued Polynomials on a Matrix Ring

Let $D$ be a domain with fraction field $K$, and let $M_n(D)$ be the ring of $n \times n$ matrices with entries in $D$. The ring of integer-valued polynomials on the matrix ring $M_n(D)$, denoted ${\rm Int}_K(M_n(D))$, consists of those polynomials in $K[x]$ that map matrices in $M_n(D)$ back to $M_n(D)$ under evaluation. It has been known for some time that ${\rm Int}_{\mathbb{Q}}(M_n(\mathbb{Z}))$ is not integrally closed. However, it was only recently that an example of a polynomial in the integral closure of ${\rm Int}_{\mathbb{Q}}(M_n(\mathbb{Z}))$ but not in the ring itself appeared in the literature, and the published example is specific to the case $n=2$. In this paper, we give a construction that produces polynomials that are integral over ${\rm Int}_K(M_n(D))$ but are not in the ring itself, where $D$ is a Dedekind domain with finite residue fields and $n \geq 2$ is arbitrary. We also show how our general example is related to $P$-sequences for ${\rm Int}_K(M_n(D))$ and its integral closure in the case where $D$ is a discrete valuation ring.

Polynomial overrings of ${\rm Int}(\mathbb Z)$

We show that every polynomial overring of the ring ${\rm Int}(\mathbb Z)$ of polynomials which are integer-valued over $\mathbb Z$ may be considered as the ring of polynomials which are integer-valued over some subset of $\hat{\mathbb{Z}}$, the profinite completion of $\mathbb Z$ with respect to the fundamental system of neighbourhoods of $0$ consisting of all non-zero ideals of $\mathbb Z.$

Idempotent pairs and PRINC domains

A pair of elements $a,b$ in an integral domain $R$ is an idempotent pair if either $a(1-a) \in bR$, or $b(1-b) \in aR$. $R$ is said to be a PRINC domain if all the ideals generated by an idempotent pair are principal. We show that in an order $R$ of a Dedekind domain every regular prime ideal can be generated by an idempotent pair; moreover, if $R$ is PRINC, then its integral closure, which is a Dedekind domain, is PRINC, too. Hence, a Dedekind domain is PRINC if and only if it is a PID. Furthermore, we show that the only imaginary quadratic orders $\mathbb Z[\sqrt{-d}]$, $d > 0$ square-free, that are PRINC and not integrally closed, are for $d=3,7$.

Primary decomposition of the ideal of polynomials whose fixed divisor is divisible by a prime power

We characterize the fixed divisor of a polynomial $f(X)$ in $\mathbb{Z}[X]$ by looking at the contraction of the powers of the maximal ideals of the overring ${\rm Int}(\mathbb{Z})$ containing $f(X)$. Given a prime $p$ and a positive integer $n$, we also obtain a complete description of the ideal of polynomials in $\mathbb{Z}[X]$ whose fixed divisor is divisible by $p^n$ in terms of its primary components.

Integral closure of rings of integer-valued polynomials on algebras

Let $D$ be an integrally closed domain with quotient field $K$. Let $A$ be a torsion-free $D$-algebra that is finitely generated as a $D$-module. For every $a$ in $A$ we consider its minimal polynomial $μ_a(X)\in D[X]$, i.e. the monic polynomial of least degree such that $μ_a(a)=0$. The ring ${\rm Int}_K(A)$ consists of polynomials in $K[X]$ that send elements of $A$ back to $A$ under evaluation. If $D$ has finite residue rings, we show that the integral closure of ${\rm Int}_K(A)$ is the ring of polynomials in $K[X]$ which map the roots in an algebraic closure of $K$ of all the $μ_a(X)$, $a\in A$, into elements that are integral over $D$. The result is obtained by identifying $A$ with a $D$-subalgebra of the matrix algebra $M_n(K)$ for some $n$ and then considering polynomials which map a matrix to a matrix integral over $D$. We also obtain information about polynomially dense subsets of these rings of polynomials.

Integral-valued polynomials over the set of algebraic integers of bounded degree

Let $K$ be a number field of degree $n$ with ring of integers $O_K$. By means of a criterion of Gilmer for polynomially dense subsets of the ring of integers of a number field, we show that, if $h\in K[X]$ maps every element of $O_K$ of degree $n$ to an algebraic integer, then $h(X)$ is integral-valued over $O_K$, that is $h(O_K)\subset O_K$. A similar property holds if we consider the set of all algebraic integers of degree $n$ and a polynomial $f\in\mathbb{Q}[X]$: if $f(α)$ is integral over $\mathbb{Z}$ for every algebraic integer $α$ of degree $n$, then $f(β)$ is integral over $\mathbb{Z}$ for every algebraic integer $β$ of degree smaller than $n$. This second result is established by proving that the integral closure of the ring of polynomials in $\mathbb{Q}[X]$ which are integer-valued over the set of matrices $M_n(\mathbb{Z})$ is equal to the ring of integral-valued polynomials over the set of algebraic integers of degree equal to $n$.

Factorization of integer-valued polynomials with square-free denominator

We describe an algorithm to compute the essentially different factorizations of a given image primitive integer-valued polynomial $f(X)=g(X)/d\in\Q[X]$, where $g\in\Z[X]$ and $d\in\N$ is square-free, assuming that the factorization of $g(X)$ in $\Z[X]$ and $d$ in $\Z$ is known. We translate this problem into a combinatorial one.

Integer-valued polynomials over matrices and divided differences

Let $D$ be an integrally closed domain with quotient field $K$ and $n$ a positive integer. We give a characterization of the polynomials in $K[X]$ which are integer-valued over the set of matrices $M_n(D)$ in terms of their divided differences. A necessary and sufficient condition on $f\in K[X]$ to be integer-valued over $M_n(D)$ is that, for each $k$ less than $n$, the $k$-th divided difference of $f$ is integral-valued on every subset of the roots of any monic polynomial over $D$ of degree $n$. If in addition the intersection of the maximal ideals of finite index is $(0)$ then it is sufficient to check the above conditions on subsets of the roots of monic irreducible polynomials of degree $n$, that is, conjugate integral elements of degree $n$ over $D$.

On some notions of good reduction for endomorphisms of the projective line

Let $Φ$ be an endomorphism of $\SR(\bar{\Q})$, the projective line over the algebraic closure of $\Q$, of degree $\geq2$ defined over a number field $K$. Let $v$ be a non-archimedean valuation of $K$. We say that $Φ$ has critically good reduction at $v$ if any pair of distinct ramification points of $Φ$ do not collide under reduction modulo $v$ and the same holds for any pair of branch points. We say that $Φ$ has simple good reduction at $v$ if the map $Φ_v$, the reduction of $Φ$ modulo $v$, has the same degree of $Φ$. We prove that if $Φ$ has critically good reduction at $v$ and the reduction map $Φ_v$ is separable, then $Φ$ has simple good reduction at $v$.
