Asymptotic uniform boundedness of energy solutions to the Penrose-Fife model

We study a Penrose-Fife phase transition model coupled with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. Improving previous results, we show that the initial value problem for this model admits a unique solution under weak conditions on the initial data. Moreover, we prove asymptotic regularization properties of weak solutions.

On the long-time behavior of some mathematical models for nematic liquid crystals

A model describing the evolution of a liquid crystal substance in the nematic phase is investigated in terms of two basic state variables: the {\it velocity field} $\bu$ and the {\it director field} $\di$, representing the preferred orientation of molecules in a neighborhood of any point in a reference domain. After recalling a known existence result, we investigate the long-time behavior of weak solutions. In particular, we show that any solution trajectory admits a non-empty $ω$-limit set containing only stationary solutions. Moreover, we give a number of sufficient conditions in order that the $ω$-limit set contains a single point. Our approach improves and generalizes existing results on the same problem.

Existence of solutions and separation from singularities for a class of fourth order degenerate parabolic equations

A nonlinear parabolic equation of the fourth order is analyzed. The equation is characterized by a mobility coefficient that degenerates at 0. Existence of at least one weak solution is proved by using a regularization procedure and deducing suitable a-priori estimates. If a viscosity term is added and additional conditions on the nonlinear terms are assumed, then it is proved that any weak solution becomes instantaneously strictly positive. This in particular implies uniqueness for strictly positive times and further time-regularization properties. The long-time behavior of the problem is also investigated and the existence of trajectory attractors and, under more restrictive conditions, of strong global attractors is shown.

Attractors for nonlinear reaction-diffusion systems in unbounded domains via the method of short trajectories

We consider a nonlinear reaction-diffusion equation settled on the whole euclidean space. We prove the well-posedness of the corresponding Cauchy problem in a general functional setting, namely, when the initial datum is uniformly locally bounded in L^2. Then we adapt the short trajectory method to establish the existence of the global attractor and, if the space dimension is at most 3, we also find an upper bound of its Kolmogorov's entropy.

Trajectory and smooth attractors for Cahn-Hilliard equations with inertial term

The paper is devoted to a modification of the classical Cahn-Hilliard equation proposed by some physicists. This modification is obtained by adding the second time derivative of the order parameter multiplied by an inertial coefficient which is usually small in comparison to the other physical constants. The main feature of this equation is the fact that even a globally bounded nonlinearity is "supercritical" in the case of two and three space dimensions. Thus the standard methods used for studying semilinear hyperbolic equations are not very effective in the present case. Nevertheless, we have recently proven the global existence and dissipativity of strong solutions in the 2D case (with a cubic controlled growth nonlinearity) and for the 3D case with small inertial coefficient and arbitrary growth rate of the nonlinearity. The present contribution studies the long-time behavior of rather weak (energy) solutions of that equation and it is a natural complement of the results of our previous papers. Namely, we prove here that the attractors for energy and strong solutions coincide for both the cases mentioned above. Thus, the energy solutions are asymptotically smooth. In addition, we show that the non-smooth part of any energy solution decays exponentially in time and deduce that the (smooth) exponential attractor for the strong solutions constructed previously is simultaneously the exponential attractor for the energy solutions as well.

On the 2D Cahn-Hilliard equation with inertial term

P. Galenko et al. proposed a modified Cahn-Hilliard equation to model rapid spinodal decomposition in non-equilibrium phase separation processes. This equation contains an inertial term which causes the loss of any regularizing effect on the solutions. Here we consider an initial and boundary value problem for this equation in a two-dimensional bounded domain. We prove a number of results related to well-posedness and large time behavior of solutions. In particular, we analyze the existence of bounded absorbing sets in two different phase spaces and, correspondingly, we establish the existence of the global attractor. We also demonstrate the existence of an exponential attractor.

Global and exponential attractors for the Penrose-Fife system

The Penrose-Fife system for phase transitions is addressed. Dirichlet boundary conditions for the temperature are assumed. Existence of global and exponential attractors is proved. Differently from preceding contributions, here the energy balance equation is both singular at 0 and degenerate at infinity. For this reason, the dissipativity of the associated dynamical process is not trivial and has to be proved rather carefully.

Long time convergence for a class of variational phase field models

In this paper we analyze a class of phase field models for the dynamics of phase transitions which extend the well-known Caginalp and Penrose-Fife models. Existence and uniqueness of the solution to the related initial boundary value problem are shown. Further regularity of the solution is deduced by exploiting the so-called regularizing effect. Then, the large time behavior of such a solution is studied and several convergence properties of the trajectory as time tends to infinity are discussed.

Global attractors for Cahn-Hilliard equations with non constant mobility

We address, in a three-dimensional spatial setting, both the viscous and the standard Cahn-Hilliard equation with a nonconstant mobility coefficient. As it was shown in J.W. Barrett and J.W. Blowey, Math. Comp., 68 (1999), 487-517, one cannot expect uniqueness of the solution to the related initial and boundary value problems. Nevertheless, referring to J. Ball's theory of generalized semiflows, we are able to prove existence of compact quasi-invariant global attractors for the associated dynamical processes settled in the natural "finite energy" space. A key point in the proof is a careful use of the energy equality, combined with the derivation of a "local compactness" estimate for systems with supercritical nonlinearities, which may have an independent interest. Under growth restrictions on the configuration potential, we also show existence of a compact global attractor for the semiflow generated by the (weaker) solutions to the nonviscous equation characterized by a "finite entropy" condition.

Attractors for the semiflow associated with a class of doubly nonlinear parabolic equations

A doubly nonlinear parabolic equation of the form $α(u_t)-Δu+W'(u)= f$, complemented with initial and either Dirichlet or Neumann homogeneous boundary conditions, is addressed. The two nonlinearities are given by the maximal monotone function $α$ and by the derivative $W'$ of a smooth but possibly nonconvex potential $W$; $f$ is a known source. After defining a proper notion of solution and recalling a related existence result, we show that from any initial datum emanates at least one solution which gains further regularity for $t>0$. Such "regularizing solutions" constitute a semiflow $S$ for which uniqueness is satisfied for strictly positive times and we can study long time behavior properties. In particular, we can prove existence of both global and exponential attractors and investigate the structure of $ω$-limits of single trajectories.

Asymptotic behavior of a nonisothermal viscous Cahn-Hilliard equation with inertial term

We consider a differential model describing nonisothermal fast phase separation processes taking place in a three-dimensional bounded domain. This model consists of a viscous Cahn-Hilliard equation characterized by the presence of an inertial term $χ_{tt}$, $χ$ being the order parameter, which is linearly coupled with an evolution equation for the (relative) temperature $\teta$. The latter can be of hyperbolic type if the Cattaneo-Maxwell heat conduction law is assumed. The state variables and the chemical potential are subject to the homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. We first provide conditions which ensure the well-posedness of the initial and boundary value problem. Then, we prove that the corresponding dynamical system is dissipative and possesses a global attractor. Moreover, assuming that the nonlinear potential is real analytic, we establish that each trajectory converges to a single steady state by using a suitable version of the Lojasiewicz-Simon inequality. We also obtain an estimate of the decay rate to equilibrium.

Well-posedness and long-time behavior for a class of doubly nonlinear equations

This paper addresses a doubly nonlinear parabolic inclusion of the form $A(u_t)+B(u)\ni f$. Existence of a solution is proved under suitable monotonicity, coercivity, and structure assumptions on the operators $A$ and $B$, which in particular are both supposed to be subdifferentials of functionals on $L^2(Ω)$. Moreover, under additional hypotheses on $B$, uniqueness of the solution is proved. Finally, a characterization of $ω$-limit sets of solutions is given and we investigate the convergence of trajectories to limit points.
