Sublinearly Morse Boundary II: Proper geodesic spaces

We build an analogue of the Gromov boundary for any proper geodesic metric space, hence for any finitely generated group. More precisely, for any proper geodesic metric space $X$ and any sublinear function $κ$, we construct a boundary for $X$, denoted $\mathcal{\partial}_κ X$, that is quasi-isometrically invariant and metrizable. As an application, we show that when $G$ is the mapping class group of a finite type surface, or a relatively hyperbolic group, then with minimal assumptions the Poisson boundary of $G$ can be realized on the $κ$-Morse boundary of $G$ equipped the word metric associated to any finite generating set.

Thermodynamic formalism for coarse expanding dynamical systems

We consider a class of dynamical systems, which we call weakly coarse expanding, which is a generalization to the postcritically infinite case of expanding Thurston maps as discussed by Bonk-Meyer and is closely related to coarse expanding conformal systems as defined by Haissinsky-Pilgrim. We prove existence and uniqueness of equilibrium states for a wide class of potentials, as well as statistical laws such as a central limit theorem, law of iterated logarithm, exponential decay of correlations and a large deviation principle. Further, if the system is defined on the 2-sphere, we prove all such results even in presence of periodic (repelling) branch points.

Central limit theorems for counting measures in coarse negative curvature

We establish central limit theorems for an action of a group G on a hyperbolic space X with respect to the counting measure on a Cayley graph of G. Our techniques allow us to remove the usual assumptions of properness and smoothness of the space, or cocompactness of the action. We provide several applications which require our general framework, including to lengths of geodesics in geometrically finite manifolds and to intersection numbers with submanifolds.

Shannon's theorem for locally compact groups

We consider random walks on locally compact groups, extending the geometric criteria for the identification of their Poisson boundary previously known for discrete groups. First, we prove a version of the Shannon-McMillan-Breiman theorem, which we then use to generalize Kaimanovich's ray approximation and strip approximation criteria. We give several applications to identify the Poisson boundary of locally compact groups which act by isometries on nonpositively curved spaces, as well as on Diestel-Leader graphs and horocylic products.

Generalizations of Douady's magic formula

We generalize a combinatorial formula of Douady from the main cardioid to other hyperbolic components $H$ of the Mandelbrot set, constructing an explicit piecewise linear map which sends the set of angles of external rays landing on $H$ to the set of angles of external rays landing on the real axis.

The core entropy for polynomials of higher degree

As defined by W. Thurston, the core entropy of a polynomial is the entropy of the restriction to its Hubbard tree. For each d >= 2, we study the core entropy as a function on the parameter space of polynomials of degree d, and prove it varies continuously both as a function of the combinatorial data and of the coefficients of the polynomials. This generalizes a conjecture of Thurston for quadratic polynomials.

Entropy and drift for Gibbs measures on geometrically finite manifolds

We prove a generalization of the fundamental inequality of Guivarc'h relating entropy, drift and critical exponent to Gibbs measures on geometrically finite quotients of CAT(-1) metric spaces. For random walks with finite superexponential moment, we show that the equality is achieved if and only if the Gibbs density is equivalent to the hitting measure. As a corollary, if the action is not convex cocompact, any hitting measure is singular to any Gibbs density.

Excursions of generic geodesics in right-angled Artin groups and graph products

Motivated by the notion of cusp excursion in geometrically finite hyperbolic manifolds, we define a notion of excursion in any subgroup of a given group, and study its asymptotic distribution for right-angled Artin groups and graph products. In particular, for any irreducible right-angled Artin group we show that with respect to the counting measure, the maximal excursion of a generic geodesic in any flat tends to $\log n$, where $n$ is the length of the geodesic. In this regard, irreducible RAAGs behave like a free product of groups. In fact, we show that the asymptotic distribution of excursions detects the growth rate of the RAAG and whether it is reducible.

Random walks of infinite moment on free semigroups

We consider random walks on finitely or countably generated free semigroups, and identify their Poisson boundaries for classes of measures which fail to meet the classical entropy criteria. In particular, we introduce the notion of w-logarithmic moment, and we show that if a random walk on a free semigroup has either finite entropy or finite w-logarithmic moment for some word w, then the space of infinite words with the resulting hitting measure is the Poisson boundary.

Counting problems in graph products and relatively hyperbolic groups

We study properties of generic elements of groups of isometries of hyperbolic spaces. Under general combinatorial conditions, we prove that loxodromic elements are generic (i.e. they have full density with respect to counting in balls for the word metric) and translation length grows linearly. We provide applications to a large class of relatively hyperbolic groups and graph products, including right-angled Artin groups and right-angled Coxeter groups.

Counting loxodromics for hyperbolic actions

Let $G \curvearrowright X$ be a nonelementary action by isometries of a hyperbolic group $G$ on a hyperbolic metric space $X$. We show that the set of elements of $G$ which act as loxodromic isometries of $X$ is generic. That is, for any finite generating set of $G$, the proportion of $X$--loxodromics in the ball of radius $n$ about the identity in $G$ approaches $1$ as $n \to \infty$. We also establish several results about the behavior in $X$ of the images of typical geodesic rays in $G$; for example, we prove that they make linear progress in $X$ and converge to the Gromov boundary $\partial X$. Our techniques make use of the automatic structure of $G$, Patterson--Sullivan measure on $\partial G$, and the ergodic theory of random walks for groups acting on hyperbolic spaces. We discuss various applications, in particular to Mod(S), Out($F_N$), and right--angled Artin groups.

The local Hoelder exponent for the dimension of invariant subsets of the circle

We consider for each t the set K(t) of points of the circle whose forward orbit for the doubling map does not intersect (0,t), and look at the dimension function eta(t) := H.dim K(t). We prove that at every bifurcation parameter t, the local Hoelder exponent of the dimension function equals the value of the function eta(t) itself. The same statement holds by replacing the doubling map with the map g(x) := dx mod 1 for d >2.

Generalised continuation by means of right limits

Several theories have been proposed to generalise the concept of analytic continuation to holomorphic functions of the disc for which the circle is a natural boundary. Elaborating on Breuer-Simon's work on "right limits" of power series, Baladi-Marmi-Sauzin recently introduced the notion of "renascent right limit" and "rrl-continuation". We discuss a few examples and consider particularly the classical example of "Poincar{é} simple pole series" in this light. These functions are represented in the disc as series of infinitely many simple poles located on the circle; they appear for instance in small divisor problems in dynamics. We prove that any such function admits a unique rrl-continuation, which coincides with the function obtained outside the disc by summing the simple pole expansion. We also discuss the relation with monogenic regularity in the sense of Borel.

Random extensions of free groups and surface groups are hyperbolic

In this note, we prove that a random extension of either the free group $F_N$ of rank $N\ge3$ or of the fundamental group of a closed, orientable surface $S_g$ of genus $g\ge2$ is a hyperbolic group. Here, a random extension is one corresponding to a subgroup of either Out$(F_N)$ or Mod$(S_g)$ generated by $k$ independent random walks. Our main theorem has several applications, including that a random subgroup of a weakly hyperbolic group is free and undistorted.

Random walks on weakly hyperbolic groups

Let G be a countable group which acts by isometries on a separable, but not necessarily proper, Gromov hyperbolic space X. We say the action of G is weakly hyperbolic if G contains two independent hyperbolic isometries. We show that a random walk on such G converges to the Gromov boundary almost surely. We apply the convergence result to show linear progress and linear growth of translation length, without any assumptions on the moments of the random walk. If the action is acylindrical, and the random walk has finite entropy and finite logarithmic moment, we show that the Gromov boundary with the hitting measure is the Poisson boundary.

Word length statistics for Teichmüller geodesics and singularity of harmonic measure

Given a measure on the Thurston boundary of Teichmueller space, one can pick a geodesic ray joining some basepoint to a randomly chosen point on the boundary. Different choices of measures may yield typical geodesics with different geometric properties. In particular, we consider two families of measures: the ones which belong to the Lebesgue or visual measure class, and harmonic measures for random walks on the mapping class group generated by a distribution with finite first moment in the word metric. We consider the ratio between the word metric and the relative metric of approximating mapping class group elements along a geodesic ray, and prove that this ratio tends to infinity along almost all geodesics with respect to Lebesgue measure, while the limit is finite along almost all geodesics with respect to harmonic measure. As a corollary, we establish singularity of harmonic measure. We show the same result for cofinite volume Fuchsian groups with cusps. As an application, we answer a question of Deroin-Kleptsyn-Navas about the vanishing of the Lyapunov expansion exponent.
