Harmonic dual dressing of spin one-half systems

Controlled modifications of the quantum magnetic response are produced in dressed systems by a high frequency, strong and not-resonant electromagnetic field. This quantum control is greatly enhanced and enriched by the harmonic, commensurable and orthogonally oriented dual dressing theoretically discussed here. The secondary field enables a fine tuning of the qubit response, with control parameters amplitude, harmonic content, spatial orientation and phase relation. Our analysis is based on a perturbative approach and includes few numerical solutions. The long-time dynamics is described in terms of an anisotropic effective static magnetic field representing the handle for the system full engineering. Through a low-order harmonic mixing the bichromatic driving generates a rectified static field acting on the spin. The Zeeman response becomes anisotropic in a triaxial geometry and includes a quadratic contribution. Our dressing increases the two-level energy splitting, improving the spin detection sensitivity. On the low field direction it compensates the static fields applied in different geometries. A resonant spin exchange between two species having very different magnetic response as electron and nucleus is allowed by the dressing. The spin temporal evolution includes a micromotion at harmonics of the driving frequency whose role in the spin detection is examined and can be exploited in quantum information. The results presented here lay a foundation for additional applications to be harnessed in quantum simulations.

Spin dynamic response to a time dependent field

The dynamic response of a parametric system constituted by a spin precessing in a time dependent magnetic field is studied by means of a perturbative approach that unveils unexpected features, and is then experimentally validated. The first-order analysis puts in evidence different regimes: beside a tailorable low-pass-filter behaviour, a band-pass response with interesting potential applications emerges. Extending the analysis to the second perturbation order permits to study the response to generically oriented fields and to characterize several non-linear features in the behaviour of such kind of systems.

$t\bar{t}b\bar{b}$ at the LHC: On the size of corrections and $b$-jet definitions

We report on the calculation of the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the production of a $t\bar{t}$ pair in association with two heavy-flavour jets. We concentrate on the di-lepton $t\bar{t}$ decay channel at the LHC with $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV. The computation is based on $pp \to e^+ ν_e\, μ^-\barν_μ\, b\bar{b} \,b\bar{b}$ matrix elements and includes all resonant and non-resonant diagrams, interferences and off-shell effects of the top quark and the $W$ gauge boson. As it is customary for such studies, results are presented in the form of inclusive and differential fiducial cross sections. We extensively investigate the dependence of our results upon variation of renormalisation and factorisation scales and parton distribution functions in the quest for an accurate estimate of the theoretical uncertainties. We additionally study the impact of the contributions induced by the bottom-quark parton density. Results presented here are particularly relevant for measurements of $t\bar{t}H(H\to b\bar{b})$ and the determination of the Higgs coupling to the top quark. In addition, they might be used for precise measurements of the top-quark fiducial cross sections and to investigate top-quark decay modelling at the LHC.

NLO QCD corrections to off-shell ${t\bar{t}W^\pm}$ production at the LHC: Correlations and Asymmetries

Recent discrepancies between theoretical predictions and experimental data in multi-lepton plus $b$-jets analyses for the $t\bar{t}W^\pm$ process, as reported by the ATLAS collaboration, have indicated that more accurate theoretical predictions and high precision observables are needed to constrain numerous new physics scenarios in this channel. To this end we employ NLO QCD computations with full off-shell top quark effects included to provide theoretical predictions for the ${\cal R}= σ_{t\bar{t}W^+}/σ_{t\bar{t}W^-}$ cross section ratio at the LHC with $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV. Depending on the transverse momentum cut on the $b$-jet we obtain $2\% -3 \%$ theoretical precision on ${\cal R}$, which should help to shed some light on new physics effects that can reveal themselves only once sufficiently precise Standard Model theoretical predictions are available. Furthermore, triggered by these discrepancies we reexamine the charge asymmetry of the top quark and its decay products in the $t\bar{t}W^\pm$ production process. In the case of charge asymmetries, that are uniquely sensitive to the chiral nature of possible new physics in this channel, theoretical uncertainties below $15\%$ are obtained. Additionally, the impact of the top quark decay modelling is scrutinised by explicit comparison with predictions in the narrow-width approximation.

Studying and applying magnetic dressing with a Bell and Bloom magnetometer

The magnetic dressing phenomenon occurs when spins precessing in a static field (holding field) are subject to an additional, strong, alternating field. It is usually studied when such extra field is homogeneous and oscillates in one direction. We study the dynamics of spins under dressing condition in two unusual configurations. In the first instance, an inhomogeneous dressing field produces space dependent dressing phenomenon, which helps to operate the magnetometer in strongly inhomogeneous static field. In the second instance, beside the usual configuration with static and the strong orthogonal oscillating magnetic fields, we add a secondary oscillating field, which is perpendicular to both. The system shows novel and interesting features that are accurately explained and modelled theoretically. Possible applications of these novel features are briefly discussed.

Regimes and quantum bounds of nanoscale thermoelectrics with peaked transmission function

Based on the Landauer-Büttiker theory, we explore the thermal regimes of two-terminal nanoscale systems with an energy-peaked transmission function. The device is in contact with two reservoirs held at different temperatures and chemical potentials. We identify the operation regions where the system acts as energy pump (thermal machine) or heat pump (refrigerator machine), or where it is working in dissipative modes. The corresponding thermoelectric parameters are obtained without numerical calculations. The recent literature, by focusing on systems with box-like or step-like shapes of the transmission functions, demonstrated that bounds of quantum origin exist for output power and heat currents of thermal machines and refrigerators. The simple model we adopt in this paper allows us to grasp easily and without numerical calculations the presence of quantum bounds for the above thermoelectric quantities, as function of the position of the transmission peak with respect to the chemical potentials of the left and right reservoirs. In spite of the simple model and treatment, our results are in qualitative agreement with analytic findings in previous researches obtained with more realistic description of the electronic transmission function.

Validation of a fast and accurate magnetic tracker operating in the environmental field

We characterize the performance of a system based on a magnetoresistor array. This instrument is developed to map the magnetic field, and to track a dipolar magnetic source in the presence of a static homogeneous field. The position and orientation of the magnetic source with respect to the sensor frame is retrieved together with the orientation of the frame with respect to the environmental field. A nonlinear best-fit procedure is used, and its precision, time performance, and reliability are analyzed. This analysis is performed in view of the practical application for which the system is designed that is an eye-tracking diagnostics and rehabilitative tool for medical purposes, which require high speed ($\ge 100$~Sa/s) and sub-millimetric spatial resolution. A throughout investigation on the results makes it possible to list several observations, suggestions, and hints, which will be useful in the design of similar setups.

Fast, cheap, and scalable magnetic tracker with an array of magnetoresistors

We present the hardware of a cheap multi-sensor magnetometric setup where a relatively large set of magnetic field components is measured in several positions by calibrated magnetoresistive detectors. The setup is developed with the scope of mapping the (inhomogeneous) field generated by a known magnetic source, which is measured as superimposed to the (homogeneous) geomagnetic field. The final goal is to use the data produced by this hardware to reconstruct position and orientation of the magnetic source with respect to the sensor frame, simultaneously with the orientation of the frame with respect to the environmental field. Possible applications of the setup are shortly discussed, together with a synthetic description of the data elaboration and analysis.

Off-shell effects in $t\bar{t}+γ/Z$ production at the LHC

We present state-of-the-art predictions for $t\bar{t}γ$ and $t\bar{t}Z(Z \to ν_\ell\barν_\ell)$ production in the fully leptonic channel at the LHC. The first process can provide key information on the strength and structure of the top-quark coupling to the photon. The invisible-decay channel $t\bar{t}Z(Z \to ν_\ell\barν_\ell)$ is an important SM background for Dark Matter searches in $t\bar{t}+E_{T}^{miss}$ final states. Our results are accurate to NLO in QCD and include all resonant and non-resonant diagrams, interferences and off-shell effects for top quarks and $W/Z$ bosons. As such, they represent the most complete description of these processes from the viewpoint of a fixed-order calculation. We show selected results for the LHC Run II energy of 13 TeV, focusing on the impact of choosing well motivated scales and on the effect of using different approaches for the modeling of top quark decays.

Harmonic fine tuning and triaxial spatial anisotropy of dressed atomic spins

The addition of a weak oscillating field modifying strongly dressed spins enhances and enriches the system quantum dynamics. Through low-order harmonic mixing the bichromatic driving generates additional rectified static field acting on the spin system. The secondary field allows for a fine tuning of the atomic response and produces effects not accessible with a single dressing field, such as a spatial triaxial anisotropy of the spin coupling constants and acceleration of the spin dynamics. This tuning-dressed configuration introduces an extra handle for the system full engineering for quantum control applications. Tuning amplitude, harmonic content, spatial orientation and phase relation are control parameters. A theoretical analysis, based on perturbative approach, is experimentally validated by applying a bichromatic radiofrequency field to an optically pumped Cs atomic vapour. We measure the resonance shifts produced by tuning fields up to the third harmonic.

The simplest of them all: $t\bar{t} W^\pm$ at NLO accuracy in QCD

Recent measurements of the $pp\to t\bar{t}W^\pm$ process in multi-lepton final states, as performed by the ATLAS collaboration in the context of the Higgs boson studies in the $t\bar{t}H$ channel, have shown discrepancies between theoretical predictions and experimental data. Such discrepancies have been observed both in the overall normalisation as well as in the modelling of the $t\bar{t}W^\pm$ process. With the goal of understanding and resolving the modelling issues within the SM $t\bar{t}W^\pm$ process we report on the state-of-the-art NLO QCD computation for this process. Specifically, we calculate higher-order corrections to the $e^+ ν_e \,μ^-\barν_μ\, e^+ ν_e \, b\bar{b}$ and $e^- \barν_e \, μ^+ ν_μ\, e^- \barν_e \, b\bar{b}$ final state at the LHC with $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV. In the computation off-shell top quarks are described by Breit-Wigner propagators, furthermore, double-, single- as well as non-resonant top-quark contributions along with all interference effects are consistently incorporated at the matrix element level. Results at NLO QCD accuracy are presented in the form of fiducial integrated and differential cross sections for two selected renormalisation and factorisation scale choices and three different PDF sets. The impact of the top quark off-shell effects on the $t\bar{t}W^\pm$ cross section is also examined by an explicit comparison to the narrow-width approximation.

Ferromagnetic contamination of Ultra-Low-Field-NMR sample containers. Quantification of the problem and possible solutions

The presence of a weak remanence in Ultra-Low-Field (ULF) NMR sample containers is investigated on the basis of proton precession. The high-sensitivity magnetometer used for the NMR detection, enables simultaneously the measurement of the static field produced in the sample proximity by ferromagnetic contaminants. The presence of the latter is studied by high resolution chemical analyses of the surface, based on X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and secondary ions mass spectroscopy. Methodologies to reduce the contamination are explored and characterized. This study is of relevance in any ULF-NMR experiment, as in the ULF regime spurious ferromagnetism becomes easily a dominant cause of artefacts.

Effects of top-quark decay modeling in $t\bar{t}γ$ production at the LHC

We present a systematic comparison of different approaches for the modeling of $t\bar{t}γ$ final states with leptonic decays at the LHC. On the one hand, we consider a complete calculation at NLO QCD accuracy which includes all resonant and non-resonant diagrams. On the other hand, we consider predictions in the narrow-width approximation with top quark decays modeled at various accuracies. In this way we quantify the impact of the off-shell effects in $t\bar{t}γ$ production. We also discuss the relative importance of double-, single- and non-resonant contributions in the complete calculation. Finally we investigate the fraction of isolated photons from decays of top quarks, which represent a background for measurements of anomalous $tγ$ couplings.

Sub-millimetric ultra-low-field MRI detected in situ by a dressed atomic magnetometer

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is universally acknowledged as an excellent tool to extract detailed spatial information with minimally invasive measurements. Efforts toward ultra-low-field (ULF) MRI are made to simplify the scanners and to reduce artefacts and incompatibilities. Optical Atomic Magnetometers (OAMs) are among the sensitive magnetic detectors eligible for ULF operation, however they are not compatible with the strong field gradients used in MRI. We show that a magnetic-dressing technique restores the OAMs operability despite the gradient, and we demonstrate sub-millimetric resolution MRI with a compact experimental setup based on an in situ detection. The proof-of-concept experiment produces unidimensional imaging of remotely magnetized samples with a dual sensor, but the approach is suited to be adapted for 3-D imaging of samples magnetized in loco. An extension to multi-sensor architectures is also possible.

On the ratio of $t\bar{t}γ$ and $t\bar{t}$ cross sections at the LHC

We study the ratio of the cross sections for $t\bar{t}γ$ and $t\bar{t}$ production at the LHC. The presence of correlations between theoretical uncertainties of the two processes makes possible a precise determination of this observable. This can help to evidentiate effects of new physics that might reveal themselves only when sufficiently precise theoretical predictions are available. Our analysis is based on fully realistic simulations of $t\bar{t}γ$ and $t\bar{t}$ production in the dilepton decay channel, including complete off-shell and non-resonant effects at NLO QCD accuracy. We discuss Standard Model predictions for the LHC Run II at both inclusive and differential level, also quantifying the impact of the theoretical uncertainties related to variation of scales and parton distribution functions.

Spurious Ferromagnetic Remanence Detected by Hybrid Magnetometer

Nuclear magnetic resonance detection in ultra low field regime enables the measurement of different components of a spurious remanence in the polymeric material constituting the sample container. A differential atomic magnetometer detects simultaneously the static field generated by the container and the time-dependent signal from the precessing nuclei. The nuclear precession responds with frequency shifts and decay rate variations to the container magnetization. Two components of the latter act independently on the atomic sensor and on the nuclear sample. A model of the measured signal allows a detailed interpretation, on the basis of the interaction geometry.
