On the Capacity of Cloud Radio Access Networks with Oblivious Relaying

We study the transmission over a network in which users send information to a remote destination through relay nodes that are connected to the destination via finite-capacity error-free links, i.e., a cloud radio access network. The relays are constrained to operate without knowledge of the users' codebooks, i.e., they perform oblivious processing. The destination, or central processor, however, is informed about the users' codebooks. We establish a single-letter characterization of the capacity region of this model for a class of discrete memoryless channels in which the outputs at the relay nodes are independent given the users' inputs. We show that both relaying à-la Cover-El Gamal, i.e., compress-and-forward with joint decompression and decoding, and "noisy network coding", are optimal. The proof of the converse part establishes, and utilizes, connections with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) source coding problem under logarithmic loss distortion measure. Extensions to general discrete memoryless channels are also investigated. In this case, we establish inner and outer bounds on the capacity region. For memoryless Gaussian channels within the studied class of channels, we characterize the capacity region when the users are constrained to time-share among Gaussian codebooks. Furthermore, we also discuss the suboptimality of separate decompression-decoding and the role of time-sharing.

Integrated Access and Backhaul Optimization for Millimeter Wave Heterogeneous Networks

By allowing a large number of links to be simultaneously transmitted, directional antenna arrays with beamforming have been envisioned as a promising candidate to reach unprecedented levels of spatial isolation. To achieve the high efficiency of spatial reuse in improving system performance, an optimization problem that maximizes the achievable data rate of a multihop heterogeneous network, which incorporates the concept of integrated access and backhaul and supports both downlink and uplink transmissions on access and backhaul links, is formulated. The optimization problem is then systematically decomposed and demonstrated as NP-hard, and a heuristic joint scheduling and resource allocation algorithm is proposed to maximize the achievable data rate. In addition, an efficient dynamic routing algorithm is proposed to further enhance the data rate. With extensive system-level simulations, it is demonstrated that the proposed algorithms achieve significant gain over benchmark schemes, in terms of data rate, and closely approach the theoretical optimum, yet with lower latency. Besides, the proposed algorithms enable a flexible adjustment of downlink and uplink transmission duration allocation and support both half- and full-duplex modes with considerable performance enhancement. In particular, the proposed algorithms are capable of fulfilling different performance requirements for both point-to-point and point-to-multipoint communications.

Multihop Routing for Data Delivery in V2X Networks

Data delivery relying on the carry-and-forward strategy of vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications is of significant importance, however highly challenging due to frequent connection disruption. Fortunately, incorporating vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications, motivated by its availability in bridging long-range vehicular connectivity, dramatically improves delivery opportunity. Nevertheless, the cooperation of V2V and V2I communications, known as vehicular-to-everything (V2X) communications, necessitates a specific design of multihop routing for enhancing data delivery performance. To address this issue, this paper provides a mathematical framework to investigate the data delivery performance in V2X networks in terms of both delivery latency and data rate. With theoretical analysis, we formulate a global and a distributed optimization problem to maximize the weighted sum of delivery latency and data rate. The optimization problems are then solved by convex optimization theory and based on the solutions, we propose a global and a distributed multihop routing algorithm to select the optimal route for maximizing the weighted sum. The rigorousness of the proposed algorithms is validated by extensive simulation under a wide range of system parameters and simulation results shed insight on the design of multihop routing algorithm in V2X networks for minimizing latency and maximizing data rate.

Polynomial-time Capacity Calculation and Scheduling for Half-Duplex 1-2-1 Networks

This paper studies the 1-2-1 half-duplex network model, where two half-duplex nodes can communicate only if they point `beams' at each other; otherwise, no signal can be exchanged or interference can be generated. The main result of this paper is the design of two polynomial-time algorithms that: (i) compute the approximate capacity of the 1-2-1 half-duplex network and, (ii) find the network schedule optimal for the approximate capacity. The paper starts by expressing the approximate capacity as a linear program with an exponential number of constraints. A core technical component consists of building a polynomial-time separation oracle for this linear program, by using algorithmic tools such as perfect matching polytopes and Gomory-Hu trees.

Multiple Measurement Vectors Problem: A Decoupling Property and its Applications

We study a Compressed Sensing (CS) problem known as Multiple Measurement Vectors (MMV) problem, which arises in joint estimation of multiple signal realizations when the signal samples have a common (joint) sparse support over a fixed known dictionary. Although there is a vast literature on the analysis of MMV, it is not yet fully known how the number of signal samples and their statistical correlations affects the performance of the joint estimation in MMV. Moreover, in many instances of MMV the underlying sparsifying dictionary may not be precisely known, and it is still an open problem to quantify how the dictionary mismatch may affect the estimation performance. In this paper, we focus on $\ell_{2,1}$-norm regularized least squares ($\ell_{2,1}$-LS) as a well-known and widely-used MMV algorithm in the literature. We prove an interesting decoupling property for $\ell_{2,1}$-LS, where we show that it can be decomposed into two phases: i) use all the signal samples to estimate the signal covariance matrix (coupled phase), ii) plug in the resulting covariance estimate as the true covariance matrix into the Minimum Mean Squared Error (MMSE) estimator to reconstruct each signal sample individually (decoupled phase). As a consequence of this decomposition, we are able to provide further insights on the performance of $\ell_{2,1}$-LS for MMV. In particular, we address how the signal correlations and dictionary mismatch affects its performance. Moreover, we show that by using the decoupling property one can obtain a variety of MMV algorithms with performances even better than that of $\ell_{2,1}$-LS. We also provide numerical simulations to validate our theoretical results.

Massive MIMO Unsourced Random Access

We consider an extension of the massive unsourced random access originally proposed by Polyanskiy to the case where the receiver has a very large number of antennas (a massive MIMO base station) and no channel state information is given to the receiver (fully non-coherent detection). Our coding approach borrows the concatenated coding idea from Amalladinne et. al., combined with a novel non-Bayesian `activity detection' algorithm for massive MIMO random access channels, that outperforms currently proposed Bayesian vector AMP (VAMP) schemes currently proposed for activity detection, and does not suffer from the numerical instabilities and requirement for accurate a priori statistics as VAMP. We show that the required transmit $E_b/N_0$ for reliable communication can be made arbitrarily small as the number of receiver antennas M grows sufficiently large.

Low-Overhead Hierarchically-Sparse Channel Estimation for Multiuser Wideband Massive MIMO

The problem of excessive pilot overhead required for uplink massive MIMO channel estimation is well known, let alone when it is considered along with wideband (OFDM) transmissions. Towards channel estimators that are both efficient and require low-training overhead, compressive sensing (CS) approaches have been increasingly popular, exploiting the sparse nature of the physical channel. However, no analytical insights regarding the overhead required for reliable channel estimation in wideband massive MIMO are available. By observing that the wideband massive MIMO channel can be represented by a vector that is not simply sparse but has well defined structural properties, referred to as hierarchical sparsity, we propose low complexity channel estimators for the multiuser scenario that take this property into account. By employing the framework of the hierarchical restricted isometry property, rigorous performance guarantees for these algorithms are provided suggesting concrete design goals for the user pilot sequences. For a specific design, we analytically characterize the scaling of the required pilot overhead with increasing number of antennas and bandwidth, revealing that, as long as the number of antennas is sufficiently large, it is independent of the per user channel sparsity level as well as the number of active users. Hence, surprisingly, in contrast to the classical setting, pilot overhead can be shifted into spatial dimensions not affecting crucial bandwidth constraints thereby increasing the overall system capacity. These analytical insights are verified by simulation results demonstrating also the superiority of the proposed algorithm over conventional CS algorithms that ignore the hierarchical sparsity property.

Fast HARQ over Finite Blocklength Codes: A Technique for Low-Latency Reliable Communication

This paper studies the performance of delay-constrained hybrid automatic repeat request HARQ protocols. Particularly, we propose a fast HARQ protocol where, to increase the end-to-end throughput, some HARQ feedback signals and successive message decodings are omitted. Considering quasi-static channels and a bursty communication model, we derive closed-form expressions for the message decoding probabilities as well as the throughput, the expected delay and the error probability of the HARQ setups. The analysis is based on recent results on the achievable rates of finite-length codes and shows the effect of the codeword length on the system performance. Moreover, we evaluate the effect of various parameters such as imperfect channel estimation and hardware on the system performance. As demonstrated, the proposed fast HARQ protocol reduces the packet transmission delay considerably, compared to state-of-the-art HARQ schemes. For example, with typical message decoding delay profiles and a maximum of 2,...,5 transmission rounds, the proposed fast HARQ protocol can improve the expected delay, compared to standard HARQ, by 27, 42, 52 and 60%, respectively, independently of the code rate/fading model.

On-the-fly Large-scale Channel-Gain Estimation for Massive Antenna-Array Base Stations

We propose a novel scheme for estimating the large-scale gains of the channels between user terminals (UTs) and base stations (BSs) in a cellular system. The scheme leverages TDD operation, uplink (UL) training by means of properly designed non-orthogonal pilot codes, and massive antenna arrays at the BSs. Subject to Q resource elements allocated for UL training and using the new scheme, a BS is able to estimate the large-scale channel gains of K users transmitting UL pilots in its cell and in nearby cells, provided K<=Q^2. Such knowledge of the large-scale channel gains of nearby out-of-cells users can be exploited at the BS to mitigate interference to the out-of-cell users that experience the highest levels of interference from the BS. We investigate the large-scale gain estimation performance provided by a variety of non-orthogonal pilot codebook designs. Our simulations suggest that among all the code designs considered, Grassmannian line-packing type codes yield the best large-scale channel gain estimation performance.

Fully-Connected vs. Sub-Connected Hybrid Precoding Architectures for mmWave MU-MIMO

Hybrid digital analog (HDA) beamforming has attracted considerable attention in practical implementation of millimeter wave (mmWave) multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) systems due to its low power consumption with respect to its digital baseband counterpart. The implementation cost, performance, and power efficiency of HDA beamforming depends on the level of connectivity and reconfigurability of the analog beamforming network. In this paper, we investigate the performance of two typical architectures for HDA MU-MIMO, i.e., the fully-connected (FC) architecture where each RF antenna port is connected to all antenna elements of the array, and the one-stream-per-subarray (OSPS) architecture where the RF antenna ports are connected to disjoint subarrays. We jointly consider the initial beam acquisition phase and data communication phase, such that the latter takes place by using the beam direction information obtained in the former phase. For each phase, we propose our own BA and precoding schemes that outperform the counterparts in the literature. We also evaluate the power efficiency of the two HDA architectures taking into account the practical hardware impairments, e.g., the power dissipation at different hardware components as well as the potential power backoff under typical power amplifier (PA) constraints. Numerical results show that the two architectures achieve similar sum spectral efficiency, but the OSPS architecture outperforms the FC case in terms of hardware complexity and power efficiency, only at the cost of a slightly longer time of initial beam acquisition.

FDD Massive MIMO via UL/DL Channel Covariance Extrapolation and Active Channel Sparsification

We propose a novel method for massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (massive MIMO) in Frequency Division Duplexing (FDD) systems. Due to the large frequency separation between Uplink (UL) and Downlink (DL), in FDD systems channel reciprocity does not hold. Hence, in order to provide DL channel state information to the Base Station (BS), closed-loop DL channel probing and Channel State Information (CSI) feedback is needed. In massive MIMO this incurs typically a large training overhead. For example, in a typical configuration with M = 200 BS antennas and fading coherence block of T = 200 symbols, the resulting rate penalty factor due to the DL training overhead, given by max{0, 1 - M/T}, is close to 0. To reduce this overhead, we build upon the well-known fact that the Angular Scattering Function (ASF) of the user channels is invariant over frequency intervals whose size is small with respect to the carrier frequency (as in current FDD cellular standards). This allows to estimate the users' DL channel covariance matrix from UL pilots without additional overhead. Based on this covariance information, we propose a novel sparsifying precoder in order to maximize the rank of the effective sparsified channel matrix subject to the condition that each effective user channel has sparsity not larger than some desired DL pilot dimension T_{dl}, resulting in the DL training overhead factor max{0, 1 - T_{dl} / T} and CSI feedback cost of T_{dl} pilot measurements. The optimization of the sparsifying precoder is formulated as a Mixed Integer Linear Program, that can be efficiently solved. Extensive simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed approach with respect to concurrent state-of-the-art schemes based on compressed sensing or UL/DL dictionary learning.

Low-Complexity Statistically Robust Precoder/Detector Computation for Massive MIMO Systems

Massive MIMO is a variant of multiuser MIMO in which the number of antennas at the base station (BS) $M$ is very large and typically much larger than the number of served users (data streams) $K$. Recent research has illustrated the system-level advantages of such a system and in particular the beneficial effect of increasing the number of antennas $M$. These benefits, however, come at the cost of dramatic increase in hardware and computational complexity. This is partly due to the fact that the BS needs to compute suitable beamforming vectors in order to coherently transmit/receive data to/from each user, where the resulting complexity grows proportionally to the number of antennas $M$ and the number of served users $K$. Recently, different algorithms based on tools from random matrix theory in the asymptotic regime of $M,K \to \infty$ with $\frac{K}{M} \to ρ\in (0,1)$ have been proposed to reduce such complexity. The underlying assumption in all these techniques, however, is that the exact statistics (covariance matrix) of the channel vectors of the users is a priori known. This is far from being realistic, especially that in the high-dim regime of $M\to \infty$, estimation of the underlying covariance matrices is well known to be a very challenging problem. In this paper, we propose a novel technique for designing beamforming vectors in a massive MIMO system. Our method is based on the randomized Kaczmarz algorithm and does not require knowledge of the statistics of the users channel vectors. We analyze the performance of our proposed algorithm theoretically and compare its performance with that of other competitive techniques via numerical simulations. Our results indicate that our proposed technique has a comparable performance while it does not require the knowledge of the statistics of the users channel vectors.

Uncoded Placement Optimization for Coded Delivery

We consider the classical coded caching problem as defined by Maddah-Ali and Niesen, where a server with a library of $N$ files of equal size is connected to $K$ users via a shared error-free link. Each user is equipped with a cache with capacity of $M$ files. The goal is to design a static content placement and delivery scheme such that the average load over the shared link is minimized. We first present a class of centralized coded caching schemes consisting of a general content placement strategy specified by a file partition parameter, enabling efficient and flexible content placement, and a specific content delivery strategy, enabling load reduction by exploiting common requests of different users. For the proposed class of schemes, we consider two cases for the optimization of the file partition parameter, depending on whether a large subpacketization level is allowed or not. In the case of an unrestricted subpacketization level, we formulate the coded caching optimization in order to minimize the average load under an arbitrary file popularity. A direct formulation of the problem involves $N2^K$ variables. By imposing some additional conditions, the problem is reduced to a linear program with $N(K+1)$ variables under an arbitrary file popularity and with $K+1$ variables under the uniform file popularity. We can recover Yu {\em et al.}'s optimal scheme for the uniform file popularity as an optimal solution of our problem. When a low subpacketization level is desired, we introduce a subpacketization level constraint involving the $\ell_0$ norm for each file. Again, by imposing the same additional conditions, we can simplify the problem to a difference of two convex functions (DC) problem with $N(K+1)$ variables that can be efficiently solved.

Delay Performance of the Multiuser MISO Downlink under Imperfect CSI and Finite Length Coding

We use stochastic network calculus to investigate the delay performance of a multiuser MISO system with zero-forcing beamforming. First, we consider ideal assumptions with long codewords and perfect CSI at the transmitter, where we observe a strong channel hardening effect that results in very high reliability with respect to the maximum delay of the application. We then study the system under more realistic assumptions with imperfect CSI and finite blocklength channel coding. These effects lead to interference and to transmission errors, and we derive closed-form lower and upper bounds on the resulting error probability. Compared to the ideal case, imperfect CSI and finite length coding cause massive degradations in the average transmission rate. Surprisingly, the system nevertheless maintains the same qualitative behavior as in the ideal case: as long as the average transmission rate is higher than the arrival rate, the system can still achieve very high reliability with respect to the maximum delay.

A New Scaling Law for Activity Detection in Massive MIMO Systems

In this paper, we study the problem of \textit{activity detection} (AD) in a massive MIMO setup, where the Base Station (BS) has $M \gg 1$ antennas. We consider a block fading channel model where the $M$-dim channel vector of each user remains almost constant over a \textit{coherence block} (CB) containing $D_c$ signal dimensions. We study a setting in which the number of potential users $K_c$ assigned to a specific CB is much larger than the dimension of the CB $D_c$ ($K_c \gg D_c$) but at each time slot only $A_c \ll K_c$ of them are active. Most of the previous results, based on compressed sensing, require that $A_c\le D_c$, which is a bottleneck in massive deployment scenarios such as Internet-of-Things (IoT) and Device-to-Device (D2D) communication. In this paper, we show that one can overcome this fundamental limitation when the number of BS antennas $M$ is sufficiently large. More specifically, we derive a \textit{scaling law} on the parameters $(M, D_c, K_c, A_c)$ and also \textit{Signal-to-Noise Ratio} (SNR) under which our proposed AD scheme succeeds. Our analysis indicates that with a CB of dimension $D_c$, and a sufficient number of BS antennas $M$ with $A_c/M=o(1)$, one can identify the activity of $A_c=O(D_c^2/\log^2(\frac{K_c}{A_c}))$ active users, which is much larger than the previous bound $A_c=O(D_c)$ obtained via traditional compressed sensing techniques. In particular, in our proposed scheme one needs to pay only a poly-logarithmic penalty $O(\log^2(\frac{K_c}{A_c}))$ for increasing the number of potential users $K_c$, which makes it ideally suited for AD in IoT setups. We propose low-complexity algorithms for AD and provide numerical simulations to illustrate our results. We also compare the performance of our proposed AD algorithms with that of other competitive algorithms in the literature.

Efficient Beam Alignment for mmWave Single-Carrier Systems with Hybrid MIMO Transceivers

Communication at millimeter wave (mmWave) bands is expected to become a key ingredient of next generation (5G) wireless networks. Effective mmWave communications require fast and reliable methods for beamforming at both the User Equipment (UE) and the Base Station (BS) sides, in order to achieve a sufficiently large Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) after beamforming. We refer to the problem of finding a pair of strongly coupled narrow beams at the transmitter and receiver as the Beam Alignment (BA) problem. In this paper, we propose an efficient BA scheme for single-carrier mmWave communications. In the proposed scheme, the BS periodically probes the channel in the downlink via a pre-specified pseudo-random beamforming codebook and pseudo-random spreading codes, letting each UE estimate the Angle-of-Arrival / Angle-of-Departure (AoA-AoD) pair of the multipath channel for which the energy transfer is maximum. We leverage the sparse nature of mmWave channels in the AoA-AoD domain to formulate the BA problem as the estimation of a sparse non-negative vector. Based on the recently developed Non-Negative Least Squares (NNLS) technique, we efficiently find the strongest AoA-AoD pair connecting each UE to the BS. We evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme under a realistic channel model, where the propagation channel consists of a few multipath scattering components each having different delays, AoAs-AoDs, and Doppler shifts. The channel model parameters are consistent with experimental channel measurements. Simulation results indicate that the proposed method is highly robust to fast channel variations caused by the large Doppler spread between the multipath components. Furthermore, we also show that after achieving BA the beamformed channel is essentially frequency-flat, such that single-carrier communication needs no equalization in the time domain.

Gaussian 1-2-1 Networks: Capacity Results for mmWave Communications

This paper proposes a new model for wireless relay networks referred to as "1-2-1 network", where two nodes can communicate only if they point "beams" at each other, while if they do not point beams at each other, no signal can be exchanged or interference can be generated. This model is motivated by millimeter wave communications where, due to the high path loss, a link between two nodes can exist only if beamforming gain at both sides is established, while in the absence of beamforming gain the signal is received well below the thermal noise floor. The main result in this paper is that the 1-2-1 network capacity can be approximated by routing information along at most $2N+2$ paths, where $N$ is the number of relays connecting a source and a destination through an arbitrary topology.
