Investigating the near-criticality of the Higgs boson

We extract from data the parameters of the Higgs potential, the top Yukawa coupling and the electroweak gauge couplings with full 2-loop NNLO precision, and we extrapolate the SM parameters up to large energies with full 3-loop NNLO RGE precision. Then we study the phase diagram of the Standard Model in terms of high-energy parameters, finding that the measured Higgs mass roughly corresponds to the minimum values of the Higgs quartic and top Yukawa and the maximum value of the gauge couplings allowed by vacuum metastability. We discuss various theoretical interpretations of the near-criticality of the Higgs mass.

The role of the top quark in the stability of the SM Higgs potential

I discuss the stability of the SM scalar potential in view of the discovery of a Higgs boson with mass around 125 GeV. The role played by the top quark mass in the choice between the full stability and the metastability conditions is analyzed in detail. The present experimental value of the top mass do not support the possibility that the SM potential is stable up to the Planck scale but favor an electroweak vacuum sufficiently long-lived to be metastable.

Higgs mass and vacuum stability in the Standard Model at NNLO

We present the first complete next-to-next-to-leading order analysis of the Standard Model Higgs potential. We computed the two-loop QCD and Yukawa corrections to the relation between the Higgs quartic coupling (lambda) and the Higgs mass (Mh), reducing the theoretical uncertainty in the determination of the critical value of Mh for vacuum stability to 1 GeV. While lambda at the Planck scale is remarkably close to zero, absolute stability of the Higgs potential is excluded at 98% C.L. for Mh < 126 GeV. Possible consequences of the near vanishing of lambda at the Planck scale, including speculations about the role of the Higgs field during inflation, are discussed.

QCD corrections to the electric dipole moment of the neutron in the MSSM

We consider the QCD corrections to the electric dipole moment of the neutron in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. We provide a master formula for the Wilson coefficients at the low energy scale including for the first time the mixing between the electric and chromoelectric operators and correcting widely used previous LO estimates. We show that, because of the mixing between the electric and chromoelectric operators, the neutralino contribution is always strongly suppressed. We find that, in general, the effect of the QCD corrections is to reduce the amount of CP violation generated at the high scale. We discuss the perturbative uncertainties of the LO computation, which are particularly large for the gluino-mediated contribution. This motivates our Next-to-Leading order analysis. We compute for the first time the order alpha_s corrections to the Wilson coefficients for the gluino contributions, and recompute the two-loop anomalous dimension for the dipole operators. We show that the large LO uncertainty disappears once NLO corrections are taken into account.

Two-loop electroweak corrections to the Higgs-boson decay H -> gamma gamma

The complete set of two-loop electroweak corrections to the decay width of the Higgs boson into two photons is presented. Two-loop contributions involving weak bosons and the top quark are computed in terms of an expansion in the Higgs external momentum. Adding these results to the previously known light fermion contributions, we find that the total electroweak corrections for a Higgs boson with 100 GeV <m_H < 150 GeV are moderate and negative, between -4% < delta_EW < 0%. Combination with the QCD corrections, which are small and positive, gives a total correction to the one-loop results of | delta_{EW+QCD}|< 1.5 %.

Two-loop electroweak corrections to Higgs production at hadron colliders

We compute the two-loop electroweak corrections due to the top quark to the gluon fusion production cross section of an intermediate-mass Higgs boson. This result, together with the previously known contribution due to the light fermions, allows a complete determination of the two-loop electroweak corrections to this production cross section. For Higgs mass values above 120 GeV the top corrections have opposite sign of the light fermions contribution, however they are always smaller in size reaching at most 15% of the latter. The total electroweak corrections to the gluon fusion production cross section for 115 GeV < m_H < 2 m_W range from 5% to 8% of the lowest order term.

Two-loop renormalization of the electric charge in the Standard Model

We discuss the renormalization of the electric charge at the two-loop level in the Standard Model of the electroweak interactions. We explicitly calculate the expression of the complete on-shell two-loop counterterm using the Background Field Method and discuss the advantages of this computational approach. We consider the related quantity $\hat e(μ)$, defined in the $\ms$ renormalization scheme and present numerical results for different values of the scale $μ$. We find that the full 2-loop electroweak corrections contribute more than 10 parts in units $10^{-5}$ to the $Δ\hatα(\mz^2)$ parameter, obtaining $\hatα^{-1}(\mz)= 128.12 \pm 0.05$ for $Δα_{had}(\mz^2) =0.027572 \pm 0.000359$.

On the two-loop Yukawa corrections to the MSSM Higgs boson masses at large tan(beta)

We complete the effective potential calculation of the two-loop, top/bottom Yukawa corrections to the Higgs boson masses in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, by computing the O(at^2 + at*ab + ab^2) contributions for arbitrary values of the bottom Yukawa coupling. We also compute the corrections to the minimization conditions of the effective potential at the same perturbative order. Our results extend the existing O(at^2) calculation, and are relevant in regions of the parameter space corresponding to tan(beta) >> 1. We extend to the Yukawa corrections a convenient renormalization scheme, previously proposed for the O(ab*as) corrections, that avoids unphysically large threshold effects associated with the bottom mass and absorbs the bulk of the corrections into the one-loop expression. For large values of tan(beta), the new contributions can account for a variation of several GeV in the lightest Higgs boson mass.

On the O(alpha_t^2) two-loop corrections to the neutral Higgs boson masses in the MSSM

We compute the O(alpha_t^2) two-loop corrections to the neutral CP-even Higgs boson mass matrix in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, for arbitrary values of mA and of the parameters in the stop sector, in the effective potential approach. In a large region of parameter space these corrections are sizeable, increasing the prediction for mh by several GeV. We present explicit analytical formulae for a simplified case. We discuss the inclusion of momentum-dependent corrections and some possible ways of assigning the input parameters.

On the neutral Higgs boson masses in the MSSM for arbitrary stop mixing

We compute the O(alpha_t alpha_s) two-loop corrections to the neutral Higgs boson masses in the Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model. An appropriate use of the effective potential allows us to obtain simple analytical formulae, valid for arbitrary values of mA and of the mass parameters in the stop sector. We elucidate some subtleties of the effective potential calculation, and find full agreement with the numerical output of the existing diagrammatic calculation. We discuss in detail the limit of heavy gluino.

Current Algebra Approach to Heavy Top Effects in $Z \rightarrow b+ \bar{b}$

The $O(αm_t^2/m_w^2)$ and $O(αα_s m_t^2/m_w^2)$ corrections to the partial decay width $Γ(Z \rightarrow b + \bar{b})$ are computed using the current algebra formulation of radiative corrections. This framework allows one to easily enforce the relevant Ward identity that greatly simplifies the calculations. As a result, the one-loop $O(αm_t^2/m_w^2)$ contribution is computed through the investigation of only two convergent diagrams. The computation of the QCD corrections to the one-loop $O(αm_t^2/m_w^2)$ term involves fewer diagrams than in the standard approach. In particular, the number of infrared divergent contribution is reduced. The calculation is performed in the dimensional regularization scheme and no term more divergent than $\frac{1}{n-4}$ is found. Our result confirms the screening of the one-loop top mass effect recently found by Fleischer {\em et al.}.
