R7-branes and AdS$_{\text{9}}$ solutions in type IIB

We consider the recently found $\mathrm{AdS}_9$ backgrounds in type IIB supergravity. We start by reviewing the solutions in a more convenient set of coordinates, which allows us to explicitly compute a few relevant observables, including the holographic central charge. Subsequently, we study non-supersymmetric 7-brane configurations sourced by the IIB axio-dilaton. We find explicit analytic 7-brane solutions that possess the above $\mathrm{AdS}_9$ backgrounds as their near-horizon geometry. Finally, we discuss the relation of these 7-brane solutions to the R7 branes by imposing the reflection monodromy $τ\rightarrow -\bar τ$ in the transverse plane.

$\text{AdS}_D\times I$ solutions in axio-dilaton gravity

We study non-supersymmetric $\mathrm{AdS}_D\times I$ solutions in the context of $(D+1)$ dimensional gravity coupled to an axio-dilaton with arbitrary runaway potential for the dilaton and arbitrary exponential coupling of the dilaton to the axion kinetic energy. We analyze the equations of motion, reformulate them in terms of a first order autonomous dynamical system, and discuss the set of fixed points, their physical interpretation and their stability conditions. We find a few special classes of analytic solutions for arbitrary $D$, including $\mathrm{AdS}_9\times I$ backgrounds in type IIB supergravity. We conclude by discussing the properties of numerical flows including the massive IIA supergravity case.

AdS$_9$ solutions in type II supergravities

We present new solutions in type II supergravities describing AdS$_9$ geometries warped over an interval. In type IIB, we construct an analytic family of backgrounds supported by a non-trivial axio-dilaton profile. Despite the presence of strong-coupling singularities at both ends of the interval, these solutions exhibit both a finite Euclidean on-shell action and a finite holographic central charge. Moreover, they possess a $\mathbb Z_2$ symmetry under which the axion transforms as $C_0\rightarrow -C_0$. We also investigate AdS$_9$ backgrounds in massive IIA supergravity supported by the Romans mass and the dilaton. Numerical integration reveals solutions with a strong-coupling singularity whose asymptotic behavior is consistent with the characteristic D8/O8 profile. In contrast to the type IIB case, our analysis indicates that the Euclidean on-shell action diverges. Finally, we identify a family of perturbative dS$_9$ solutions in massive IIA supergravity.

7D (non-)susy vacua & DWs from dynamical open strings

Warped compactifications of massive type IIA supergravity on a 3-sphere with spacetime-filling O6/D6 sources are known to admit a half-maximal gauged supergravity description in 7D. We study the effect of introducing open string degrees of freedom (scalars and fluxes) in such dimensional reductions, associated with the spacetime-filling sources. From the 7D supergravity point of view, this can be realized by coupling the gravity multiplet with extra vector multiplets and adding new components to the embedding tensor describing the gauging. The scalar potential of the underlying theory exhibits novel AdS7 vacuum solutions, with and without supersymmetry. Finally, we explore the net of domain wall solutions interpolating between the different pairs of vacua, and present analytical as well as numerical solutions.

Non-SUSY DW's in ISO(7) gauged supergravity

We consider 4D maximal $\mathrm{ISO}(7)$ gauged supergravity, which is known to arise from a consistent truncation of massive IIA supergravity on a six-sphere. Within its $\mathrm{SU}(3)$ invariant sector, the theory is known to possess eight AdS vacua, preserving various amounts of residual supersymmetry and bosonic symmetry. By making use of fake supergravity and the Hamilton-Jacobi formalism, we find novel non-supersymmetric domain walls (DW) interpolating between different pairs of AdS extrema. We conclude by discussing some holographically relevant quantities such as the free energy and the anomalous dimensions of the operators triggering the dual RG flows.

Rotating Topological Stars

We construct a three-parameter family of smooth and horizonless rotating solutions of Einstein-Maxwell theory with Chern-Simons term in five dimensions and discuss their stringy origin in terms of three-charge brane systems in Type IIB and M-theory. The general solution interpolates smoothly between Kerr and static Topological Star geometries. We show that for specific choices of the parameters and quantized values of the angular momentum the geometry terminates on a smooth five-dimensional cap, and it displays neither ergoregion nor closed timelike curves. We discuss the propagation of particles and waves showing that geodetic motion is integrable and the radial and angular propagation of scalar perturbations can be separated and described in terms of two ordinary differential equations of confluent Heun type.

Half-BPS Janus solutions in AdS$_7$

We study half-BPS flows in gauged minimal 7d supergravity featured by an AdS$_3\times S^3$ slicing of the metric, supported by a dyonic three-form field. We first present a novel strategy for analytic integration of the BPS equations, which makes use of the integrals of motion. Subsequently, we discuss the suitable choice of integration constants that gives rise to smooth geometries. These flows are asymptotically locally AdS$_7$ in their UV limit, while their IR geometry is AdS$_3\times \mathbb{R}^4$. We then discuss their uplifts to 11d and massive IIA supergravity and observe that they describe one-parameter deformations of their AdS$_7\times S^4$ and AdS$_7\times S^3$ vacua, respectively, their holographic interpretation being as conformal defect CFT$_2$'s within the corresponding dual SCFT$_6$'s. We conclude with the computation of the holographic central charge, by focussing on the M-theory interpretation.

Deconstruction and surface defects in 6d CFTs

We study the two families of AdS$_3\times S^3\times S^2\times Σ_2$ solutions to massive Type IIA supergravity with small and large $(0,4)$ supersymmetries constructed recently in the literature, in connection with the AdS$_7\times S^2\times I$ solutions to massive Type IIA, to which they asymptote locally. Based on our analysis of various observables, that we study holographically, we propose an interpretation of the first class of solutions as dual to deconstructed 6d (1,0) CFTs dual to AdS$_7$, and of the second class as dual to surface defects in the same 6d theories. Among the observables that we study are baryon vertices and giant graviton configurations in quiver-like constructions.

Gauge theory meets cosmology

We reconsider linear perturbations around general Friedmann - Lemaitre - Robertson - Walker (FLRW) cosmological backgrounds. Exploiting gauge freedom involving only time reparametrizations, we write down classical background solutions analytically, for an arbitrary number of fluid components. We then show that the time evolution of scalar and tensor adiabatic perturbations are governed by Schrödinger-like differential equations of generalized Heun type. After recovering known analytic results for a single-component fluid, we discuss more general situations with two and three different fluid components, with special attention to the combination of radiation, matter and vacuum energy, which is supposed to describe the $Λ$CDM model. The evolution of linear perturbations of a flat $Λ$CDM universe is described by a two-transient model, where the transitions from radiation to matter and matter to vacuum energy are governed by a Heun equation and a Hypergeometric equation, respectively. We discuss an analytic approach to the study of the general case, involving generalized Heun equations, that makes use of (quantum) Seiberg-Witten curves for ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric gauge theories and has proven to be very effective in the analysis of Black-Hole, fuzzball and ECO perturbations.

Massive IIA flux compactifications with dynamical open strings

We consider massive type IIA compactifications down to 4 dimensions in presence of O6 planes and D6 branes parallel to them, in order to preserve half-maximal supersymmetry in 4D. The dynamics of open strings living on the spacetime filling branes is taken into account, in the gauged supergravity description, by adding extra vector multiplets and embedding tensor components. The scalar potential gets new terms that can be matched with contributions coming from dimensional reduction of the non-Abelian DBI and WZ brane actions. In this setting, we analyze the vacuum structure of the theory and find novel AdS$_4$ vacua, both supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric ones. Furthermore, we address their perturbative stability by computing their mass spectra. Some of the vacua are found to be perturbatively stable, despite their being non-supersymmetric. We conclude by discussing the reliability of our setup in terms of higher-derivative corrections.

Open Strings in IIB Orientifold Reductions

We consider type IIB compactifications on a general 4D group manifold with different types of possible spacetime filling O-planes and the corresponding D-branes parallel to them. Once fluxes allowed by the associated orientifold projection are included, a 6D $\mathcal{N}=(1,1)$ gauged supergravity is obtained. In this paper we show how the consistent coupling to dynamical open strings living on the spacetime filling D-branes may be captured by the inclusion of extra vector multiplets and extra embedding tensor deformations on the gauged supergravity side. As a result, the quadratic constraints on the embedding tensor consistently reproduce the source corrected 10D Bianchi identities. Furthermore, the field strength modifications induced by the open string sector could potentially be understood as U-dual versions of the Green-Schwarz terms. Finally, the entire scalar potential of the theory exactly matches the one obtained from reduction of the bulk action plus the source contributions.

Searching for Coleman-de Luccia bubbles in AdS compactifications

Coleman-de Luccia transitions are spontaneous processes of nucleation of bubbles within metastable gravitational vacua including in their interior a true stable vacuum. From the perspective of lower-dimensional gauged supergravities obtained by truncating Type II and M-theory, these instantonic processes are represented by smooth domain walls featured by de Sitter foliations. These geometries must connect two different AdS vacua in such a way that the wall is defined by an interior and an exterior. We propose a first-order formulation for such radial flows and present two fully backreacted examples of gravitational instantons obtained through this technique, beyond the thin-wall approximation. In the first we consider minimal 7d supergravity describing the truncation of M-theory over a squashed 4-sphere and admitting two AdS$_7$ vacua, one supersymmetric and the other not. Secondly we apply the same strategy to 6d Romans supergravity obtained with consistent truncation of massive IIA supergravity. Also in this case we derive a dS domain wall interpolating between the Brandhuber-Oz vacuum and the non-supersymmetric AdS$_6$ vacuum of the theory.

Stringy multifield quintessence and the Swampland

We consider quintessence models within 4D effective descriptions of gravity coupled to two scalar fields. These theories are known to give rise to viable models of late-time cosmic acceleration without any need for flat potentials, and so they are potentially in agreement with the dS Swampland conjecture. In this paper we investigate the possibility of consistently embedding such constructions in string theory. We identify situations where the quintessence fields are either closed string universal moduli or non-universal moduli such as blow-up modes. We generically show that no trajectories compatible with today's cosmological parameters exist, if one starts from matter-dominated initial conditions. It is worth remarking that universal trajectories compatible with observations do appear, provided that the starting point at early times is a phase of kinetic domination. However, justifying this choice of initial conditions on solid grounds is far from easy. We conclude by studying Q-ball formation in this class of models and discuss constraints coming from Q-ball safety in all cases analyzed here.

Positive energy and non-SUSY flows in ISO(7) gauged supergravity

We consider maximal gauged supergravity in 4D with ISO(7) gauge group, which arises from a consistent truncation of massive IIA supergravity on a six-sphere. Within its G$_2$ invariant sector, the theory is known to possess a supersymmetric AdS extremum as well as two non-supersymmetric ones. In this context we provide a first order formulation of the theory by making use of the Hamilton-Jacobi (HJ) formalism. This allows us to derive a positive energy theorem for both non-supersymmetric extrema. Subsequently, we also find novel non-supersymmetric domain walls (DW) interpolating between the supersymmetric extremum and each of the other two. Finally, we discuss a perturbative HJ technique that may be used in order to solve for curved DW geometries.

Bubble instability of mIIA on $\mathrm{AdS}_4\times S^6$

We consider compactifications of massive IIA supergravity on a six-sphere. This setup is known to give rise to non-supersymmetric AdS$_4$ vacua preserving SO$(7)$ as well as G$_2$ residual symmetry. Both solutions have a round $S^6$ metric and are supported by the Romans' mass and internal $F_6$ flux. While the SO$(7)$ invariant vacuum is known to be perturbatively unstable, the G$_2$ invariant one has been found to have a fully stable Kaluza-Klein spectrum. Moreover, it has been shown to be protected against brane-jet instabilities. Motivated by these results, we study possible bubbling solutions connected to the G$_2$ vacuum, representing non-perturbative instabilities of the latter. We indeed find an instability channel represented by the nucleation of a bubble of nothing dressed up with a homogeneous D2 brane charge distribution in the internal space. Our solution generalizes to the case where $S^6$ is replaced by any six-dimensional nearly-Kähler manifold.

New IIB intersecting brane solutions yielding supersymmetric AdS$_3$ vacua

We consider genuine type IIB string theory (supersymmetric) brane intersections that preserve $(1+1)$D Lorentz symmetry. We provide the full supergravity solutions in their analytic form and discuss their physical properties. The Ansatz for the spacetime dependence of the different brane warp factors goes beyond the harmonic superposition principle. By studying the associated near-horizon geometry, we construct interesting classes of AdS$_3$ vacua in type IIB and highlight their relation to the existing classifications in the literature. Finally, we discuss their holographic properties.

AdS$_3$ from M-branes at conical singularities

M-theory is known to possess supersymmetric solutions where the geometry is $\mathrm{AdS}_3\times S^3\times S^3$ warped over a Riemann surface $Σ_{2}$. The simplest examples in this class can be engineered by placing M2 and M5 branes as defects inside of a stack of background M5 branes. In this paper we show that a generalization of this construction yields more general solutions in the aforementioned class. The background branes are now M5's carrying M2 brane charge, while the defect branes are now placed at the origin of a flat hyperplane with a conical defect. The equations of motion imply a relation between the deficit angle produced by the conical defect and the M2 charge carried by the background branes.

Out of the Swampland with Multifield Quintessence?

Multifield models with a curved field space have already been shown to be able to provide viable quintessence models for steep potentials that satisfy swampland bounds. The simplest dynamical systems of this type are obtained by coupling Einstein gravity to two scalar fields with a curved field space. In this paper we study the stability properties of the non-trivial fixed points of this dynamical system for a general functional dependence of the kinetic coupling function and the scalar potential. We find the existence of non-geodesic trajectories with a sharp turning rate in field space which can give rise to late-time cosmic acceleration with no need for flat potentials. In particular, we discuss the properties of the phase diagram of the system and the corresponding time evolution when varying the functional dependence of the kinetic coupling. Interestingly, upon properly tuning the initial conditions of the field values, we find trajectories that can describe the current state of the universe. This could represent a promising avenue to build viable quintessence models out of the swampland if they could be consistently embedded in explicit string constructions.
