The ACM property for unions of lines in $\mathbb P^1 \times \mathbb P^2$

This paper examines the Arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay (ACM) property for certain codimension 2 varieties in $\mathbb P^1\times \mathbb P^2$ called sets of lines in $\mathbb P^1\times \mathbb P^2$ (not necessarily reduced). We discuss some obstacles to finding a general characterization. We then consider certain classes of such curves, and we address two questions. First, when are they themselves ACM? Second, in a non-ACM reduced configuration, is it possible to replace one component of a primary (prime) decomposition by a suitable power (i.e. to "fatten" one line) to make the resulting scheme ACM? Finally, for our classes of such curves, we characterize the locally Cohen-Macaulay property in combinatorial terms by introducing the definition of a fully v-connected configuration. We apply some of our results to give analogous ACM results for sets of lines in $\mathbb P^3$.

Rational normal curves and Hadamard products

Given $r>n$ general hyperplanes in $\mathbb P^n,$ a star configuration of points is the set of all the $n$-wise intersection of them. We introduce {\it contact star configurations}, which are star configurations where all the hyperplanes are osculating to the same rational normal curve. In this paper we find a relation between this construction and Hadamard products of linear varieties. Moreover, we study the union of contact star configurations on a same conic in $\mathbb P^2$, we prove that the union of two contact star configurations has a special $h$-vector and, in some cases, this is a complete intersection.

Splittings of Toric Ideals

Let $I \subseteq R = \mathbb{K}[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ be a toric ideal, i.e., a binomial prime ideal. We investigate when the ideal $I$ can be "split" into the sum of two smaller toric ideals. For a general toric ideal $I$, we give a sufficient condition for this splitting in terms of the integer matrix that defines $I$. When $I = I_G$ is the toric ideal of a finite simple graph $G$, we give additional splittings of $I_G$ related to subgraphs of $G$. When there exists a splitting $I = I_1+I_2$ of the toric ideal, we show that in some cases we can describe the (multi-)graded Betti numbers of $I$ in terms of the (multi-)graded Betti numbers of $I_1$ and $I_2$.

Steiner Configurations ideals: containment and colouring

Given a homogeneous ideal $I \subseteq k[x_0,\dots,x_n]$, the Containment problem studies the relation between symbolic and regular powers of $I$, that is, it asks for which pair $m, r \in \mathbb{N}$, $I^{(m)} \subseteq I^r$ holds. In the last years, several conjectures have been posed on this problem, creating an active area of current interests and ongoing investigations. In this paper, we investigated the Stable Harbourne Conjecture and the Stable Harbourne -- Huneke Conjecture and we show that they hold for the defining ideal of a Complement of a Steiner configuration of points in $\mathbb{P}^{n}_{k}$. We can also show that the ideal of a Complement of a Steiner Configuration of points has expected resurgence, that is, its resurgence is strictly less than its big height, and it also satisfies Chudnovsky and Demailly's Conjectures. Moreover, given a hypergraph $H$, we also study the relation between its colourability and the failure of the containment problem for the cover ideal associated to $H$. We apply these results in the case that $H$ is a Steiner System.

Steiner systems and configurations of points

The aim of this paper is to make a connection between design theory and algebraic geometry/commutative algebra. In particular, given any Steiner System $S(t,n,v)$ we associate two ideals, in a suitable polynomial ring, defining a Steiner configuration of points and its Complement. We focus on the latter, studying its homological invariants, such as Hilbert Function and Betti numbers. We also study symbolic and regular powers associated to the ideal defining a Complement of a Steiner configuration of points, finding its Waldschmidt constant, regularity, bounds on its resurgence and asymptotic resurgence. We also compute the parameters of linear codes associated to any Steiner configuration of points and its Complement.

Regularity and h-polynomials of toric ideals of graphs

For all integers $4 \leq r \leq d$, we show that there exists a finite simple graph $G= G_{r,d}$ with toric ideal $I_G \subset R$ such that $R/I_G$ has (Castelnuovo-Mumford) regularity $r$ and $h$-polynomial of degree $d$. To achieve this goal, we identify a family of graphs such that the graded Betti numbers of the associated toric ideal agree with its initial ideal, and furthermore, this initial ideal has linear quotients. As a corollary, we can recover a result of Hibi, Higashitani, Kimura, and O'Keefe that compares the depth and dimension of toric ideals of graphs.

Expecting the unexpected: quantifying the persistence of unexpected hypersurfaces

If $X \subset \mathbb P^n$ is a reduced subscheme, we say that $X$ admits an unexpected hypersurface of degree $t$ for multiplicity $m$ if the imposition of having multiplicity $m$ at a general point $P$ fails to impose the expected number of conditions on the linear system of hypersurfaces of degree $t$ containing $X$. Conditions which either guarantee the occurrence of unexpected hypersurfaces, or which ensure that they cannot occur, are not well understand. We introduce new methods for studying unexpectedness, such as the use of generic initial ideals and partial elimination ideals to clarify when it can and when it cannot occur. We also exhibit algebraic and geometric properties of $X$ which in some cases guarantee and in other cases preclude $X$ having certain kinds of unexpectedness. In addition, we formulate a new way of quantifying unexpectedness (our AV sequence), which allows us detect the extent to which unexpectedness persists as $t$ increases but $t-m$ remains constant. Finally, we study to what extent we can detect unexpectedness from the Hilbert function of $X$.

In the Shadows of a hypergraph: looking for associated primes of powers of squarefree monomial ideals

The aim of this paper is to study the associated primes of powers of squarefree monomial ideals. Hypergraphs and squarefree monomial ideals are strongly connected. The cover ideal $J(H)$ of a hypergraph $H$ is the intersection of the primes corresponding to the edges of $H$. We define the $shadow$ of $H$ as a certain set of smaller hypergraphs related to $H$. We then describe how the shadows of $H$ preserve information about the associated primes of the powers of $J(H)$. Some implications to the persistence property are studied.

A numerical property of Hilbert functions and lex segment ideals

We introduce the fractal expansions, sequences of integers associated to a number. We show that these sequences characterize the O-sequences and encode some information on lex segment ideals. Moreover, we introduce a numerical functions called fractal functions, and we show that fractal functions can be used to classify the Hilbert functions of bigraded algebras.

Multiprojective spaces and the arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay property

In this paper we study the arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay (ACM) property for sets of points in multiprojective spaces. Most of what is known is for $\mathbb P^1\times \mathbb P^1$ and, more recently, in $(\mathbb P^1)^r.$ In $\mathbb P^1\times \mathbb P^1$ the so called inclusion property characterizes the ACM property. We extend the definition in any multiprojective space and we prove that the inclusion property implies the ACM property in $\mathbb P^m\times \mathbb P^n$. In such an ambient space it is equivalent to the so-called $(\star)$-property. Moreover, we start an investigation of the ACM property in $\mathbb P^1\times \mathbb P^n.$ We give a new construction that highlights how different the behavior of the ACM property is in this setting.

The interpolation problem for a set of three fat points in $\mathbb{P}^1\times\mathbb{P}^1$

This is an appendix to the recent paper of Favacchio and Guardo. In these notes we describe explicitly a minimal bigraded free resolution and the bigraded Hilbert function of a set of 3 fat points whose support is an almost complete intersection (ACI) in $\mathbb{P}^1\times\mathbb{P}^1.$ This solve the interpolation problem for three points with an ACI support.

The minimal free resolution of fat almost complete intersections in $\mathbb{P}^1\times\mathbb{P}^1$

A current research theme is to compare symbolic powers of an ideal $I$ with the regular powers of $I$. In this paper, we focus on the case that $I=I_X$ is an ideal defining an almost complete intersection (ACI) sets of points $X$ in $\mathbb{P}^1\times\mathbb{P}^1$. In particular, we describe a minimal free bigraded resolution of a non arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay (also non homogeneus) set of fat points $\mathcal Z$ whose support is an ACI. We call $\mathcal Z$ a fat ACI. We also show that its symbolic and ordinary powers are equal, i.e, $I_{\mathcal Z}^{(m)}=I_{\mathcal Z}^{m}$ for any $m\geq 1.$

Tower sets and other configurations with the Cohen-Macaulay property

Some well-known arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay configurations of linear varieties in $\mathbb{P}^r$ as $k$-configurations, partial intersections and star configurations are generalized by introducing tower schemes. Tower schemes are reduced schemes that are finite union of linear varieties whose support set is a suitable finite subset of $\mathbb{Z}_+^c$ called tower set. We prove that the tower schemes are arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay and we compute their Hilbert function in terms of their support. Afterwards, since even in codimension 2 not every arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay squarefree monomial ideal is the ideal of a tower scheme, we slightly extend this notion by defining generalized tower schemes (in codimension 2) and we show that the support of these configurations (the generalized tower set) gives a combinatorial characterization of the primary decomposition of the arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay squarefree monomial ideals.

On the weak Lefschetz Property of graded modules over $K[x,y]$

It is known that graded cyclic modules over $S=K[x,y]$ have the Weak Lefschetz Property (WLP). This is not true for non-cyclic modules over $S$. The purpose of this note is to study which conditions on $S$-modules ensure the WLP. We give an algorithm to test the WLP for graded modules with fixed Hilbert function. In particular, we prove that indecomposable graded modules over $S$ with the Hilbert function $(h_0,h_1)$ have the WLP.
