Condensation and equilibration in an urn model

After reviewing the general scaling properties of aging systems, we present a numerical study of the slow evolution induced in the zeta urn model by a quench from a high temperature to a lower one where a condensed equilibrium phase exists. By considering both one-time and two-time quantities we show that the features of the model fit into the general framework of aging systems. In particular, its behavior can be interpreted in terms of the simultaneous existence of equilibrated and aging degrees with different scaling properties.

Strong anomalous diffusion of the phase of a chaotic pendulum

In this letter we consider the phase diffusion of a harmonically driven undamped pendulum and show that it is anomalous in the strong sense. The role played by the fractal properties of the phase space is highlighted, providing an illustration of the link between deterministic chaos and anomalous transport. Finally, we build a stochastic model which reproduces most properties of the original Hamiltonian system by alternating ballistic flights and random diffusion.

Fluctuations of rotational and translational degrees of freedom in an interacting active dumbbell system

We study the dynamical properties of a two-dimensional ensemble of self-propelled dumbbells with only repulsive interactions. After summarizing the behavior of the translational and rotational mean-square displacements in the homogeneous phase that we established in a previous study, we analyze their fluctuations. We study the dependence of the probability distribution functions in terms of the Péclet number, describing the relative role of active forces and thermal fluctuations, and of particle density.

Six vertex model with domain-wall boundary conditions in the Bethe-Peierls approximation

We use the Bethe-Peierls method combined with the belief propagation algorithm to study the arctic curves in the six vertex model on a square lattice with domain-wall boundary conditions, and the six vertex model on a rectangular lattice with partial domain-wall boundary conditions. We show that this rather simple approximation yields results that are remarkably close to the exact ones when these are known, and allows one to estimate the location of the phase boundaries with relative little effort in cases in which exact results are not available.

Singular behavior of fluctuations in a relaxation process

Carrying out explicitly the computation in a paradigmatic model of non-interacting systems, the Gaussian Model, we show the existence of a singular point in the probability distribution $P(M)$ of an extensive variable $M$. Interpreting $P(M)$ as a thermodynamic potential of a dual system obtained from the original one by applying a constraint, we discuss how the non-analytical point of $P(M)$ is the counterpart of a phase-transition in the companion system. We show the generality of such mechanism by considering both the system in equilibrium or in the non-equilibrium state following a temperature quench.

Dynamics of a homogeneous active dumbbell system

We analyse the dynamics of a two dimensional system of interacting active dumbbells. We characterise the mean-square displacement, linear response function and deviation from the equilibrium fluctuation-dissipation theorem as a function of activity strength, packing fraction and temperature for parameters such that the system is in its homogeneous phase. While the diffusion constant in the last diffusive regime naturally increases with activity and decreases with packing fraction, we exhibit an intriguing non-monotonic dependence on the activity of the ratio between the finite density and the single particle diffusion constants. At fixed packing fraction, the time-integrated linear response function depends non-monotonically on activity strength. The effective temperature extracted from the ratio between the integrated linear response and the mean-square displacement in the last diffusive regime is always higher than the ambient temperature, increases with increasing activity and, for small active force it monotonically increases with density while for sufficiently high activity it first increases to next decrease with the packing fraction. We ascribe this peculiar effect to the existence of finite-size clusters for sufficiently high activity and density at the fixed (low) temperatures at which we worked. The crossover occurs at lower activity or density the lower the external temperature. The finite density effective temperature is higher (lower) than the single dumbbell one below (above) a cross-over value of the Peclet number.

Pattern Formation in Liquid-Vapor Systems under Periodic Potential and Shear

In this paper the phase behavior and pattern formation in a sheared non-ideal fluid under a periodic potential is studied. An isothermal two-dimensional formulation of a lattice Boltzmann scheme for a liquid-vapor system with the van der Waals equation of state is presented and validated. Shear is applied by moving walls and the periodic potential will vary along the flow direction. A region of the parameter space, where in absence of flow a striped phase with oscillating density is stable, will be considered. At low shear rates the periodic patterns are preserved and slightly distorted by the flow. At high shear rates the striped phase looses its stability and a new phase with interface waves between the liquid and vapor regions will appear. Velocity field patterns will be also shown.

Condensation of Fluctuations in and out of Equilibrium

Condensation of fluctuations is an interesting phenomenon conceptually distinct from condensation on average. One stricking feature is that, contrary to what happens on average, condensation of fluctuations may occurr even in the absence of interaction. The explanation emerges from the duality between large deviation events in the given system and typical events in a new and appropriately biased system. This surprising phenomenon is investigated in the context of the Gaussian model, chosen as paradigmatical non interacting system, before and after an istantaneous temperature quench. It is shown that the bias induces a mean-field-like effective interaction responsible of the condensation on average. Phase diagrams, covering both the equilibrium and the off-equilibrium regimes, are derived for observables representative of generic behaviors.

Heat exchanges in a quenched ferromagnet

The off-equilibrium probability distribution of the heat exchanged by a ferromagnet in a time interval after a quench below the critical point is calculated analytically in the large-N limit. The distribution is characterized by a singular threshold Qc < 0, below which a macroscopic fraction of heat is released by the k = 0 Fourier component of the order parameter. The mathematical structure producing this phenomenon is the same responsible of the order parameter condensation in the equilibrium low temperature phase. The heat exchanged by the individual Fourier modes follows a non trivial pattern, with the unstable modes at small wave vectors warming up the modes around a characteristic finite wave vector kM. Two internal temperatures, associated to the k = 0 and k = kM modes, rule the heat currents through a fluctuation relation similar to the one for stationary systems in contact with two thermal reservoirs.

Folding transitions in three-dimensional space with defects

A model describing the three-dimensional folding of the triangular lattice on the face-centered cubic lattice is generalized allowing the presence of defects corresponding to cuts in the two-dimensional network. The model can be expressed in terms of Ising-like variables with nearest-neighbor and plaquette interactions in the hexagonal lattice; its phase diagram is determined by the Cluster Variation Method. The results found by varying the curvature and defect energy show that the introduction of defects turns the first-order crumpling transitions of the model without defects into continuous transitions. New phases also appear by decreasing the energy cost of defects and the behavior of their densities has been analyzed.

Heat exchanges in coarsening systems

This paper is a contribution to the understanding of the thermal properties of aging systems where statistically independent degrees of freedom with largely separated timescales are expected to coexist. Focusing on the prototypical case of quenched ferromagnets, where fast and slow modes can be respectively associated to fluctuations in the bulk of the coarsening domains and to their interfaces, we perform a set of numerical experiments specifically designed to compute the heat exchanges between different degrees of freedom. Our studies promote a scenario with fast modes acting as an equilibrium reservoir to which interfaces may release heat through a mechanism that allows fast and slow degrees to maintain their statistical properties independent.

Kinetics of self-induced aggregation in Brownian particles

We study a model of interacting random walkers that proposes a simple mechanism for the emergence of cooperation in group of individuals. Each individual, represented by a Brownian particle, experiences an interaction produced by the local unbalance in the spatial distribution of the other individuals. This interaction results in a nonlinear velocity driving the particle trajectories in the direction of the nearest more crowded regions; the competition among different aggregating centers generates nontrivial dynamical regimes. Our simulations show that for sufficiently low randomness, the system evolves through a coalescence behavior characterized by clusters of particles growing with a power law in time. In addition, the typical scaling properties of the general theory of stochastic aggregation processes are verified.

Correlation Functions and Fluctuation-Dissipation Relation in Driven Mixtures: an exactly solvable model

The dynamics of a binary system with non conserved order parameter under a plain shear flow with rate $γ$ is solved analytically in the large-N limit. A phase transition is observed at a critical temperature $T_c(γ)$. After a quench from a high temperature equilibrium state to a lower temperature $T$ a non-equilibrium stationary state is entered when $T>T_c(γ)$, while aging dynamics characterizes the phases with $T\leq T_c(γ)$. Two-time quantities are computed and the off-equilibrium generalization of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem is provided.

Rheological Behavior of Microemulsions

We study the stationary and transient behaviors of the microemulsion phase subjected to a shear flow. The system is described by a diffusion-convective equation which generalizes the usual Cahn-Hilliard equation. Non-linear terms are treated in a self-consistent approximation. Shear, first and second normal stresses are calculated as momenta of the structure factor. Shear thinning is observed in stationary conditions. After a newtonian regime at small values of the shear rate, the excess viscosity decreases when the shear rate becomes of the order of the inverse of the relaxation time of the system without flow. In transient regimes, when the flow is applied starting from a quiescent state, we find that the shear stress reaches a maximum before decreasing to a constant value.

Persistence exponent in a superantiferromagnetic quenching

We measure the persistence exponent in a phase separating two-dimensional spin system with non-conserved dynamics quenched in a region with four coexisting stripe phases. The system is an Ising model with nearest neighbor, next-to-the-nearest neighbor and plaquette interactions. Due the particular nature of the ground states, the order parameter is defined in terms of blocks of spins. Our estimate of the persistence exponent, $θ=0.42$, differs from those of the two-dimensional Ising and four state Potts models. Our procedure allows the study of persistence properties also at finite temperature $T$: our results are compatible with the hypothesis that $θ$ does not depend on $T$ below the critical point.

Folding transition of the triangular lattice in a discrete three--dimensional space

A vertex model introduced by M. Bowick, P. Di Francesco, O. Golinelli, and E. Guitter (cond-mat/9502063) describing the folding of the triangular lattice onto the face centered cubic lattice has been studied in the hexagon approximation of the cluster variation method. The model describes the behaviour of a polymerized membrane in a discrete three--dimensional space. We have introduced a curvature energy and a symmetry breaking field and studied the phase diagram of the resulting model. By varying the curvature energy parameter, a first-order transition has been found between a flat and a folded phase for any value of the symmetry breaking field.

Folding transitions of the triangular lattice with defects

A recently introduced model describing the folding of the triangular lattice is generalized allowing for defects in the lattice and written as an Ising model with nearest-neighbor and plaquette interactions on the honeycomb lattice. Its phase diagram is determined in the hexagon approximation of the cluster variation method and the crossover from the pure Ising to the pure folding model is investigated, obtaining a quite rich structure with several multicritical points. Our results are in very good agreement with the available exact ones and extend a previous transfer matrix study.

Renormalization Group results for lattice surface models

We study the phase diagram of statistical systems of closed and open interfaces built on a cubic lattice. Interacting closed interfaces can be written as Ising models, while open surfaces as Z(2) gauge systems. When the open surfaces reduce to closed interfaces with few defects, also the gauge model can be written as an Ising spin model. We apply the lower bound renormalization group (LBRG) transformation introduced by Kadanoff (Phys. Rev. Lett. 34, 1005 (1975)) to study the Ising models describing closed and open surfaces with few defects. In particular, we have studied the Ising-like transition of self-avoiding surfaces between the random-isotropic phase and the phase with broken global symmetry at varying values of the mean curvature. Our results are compared with previous numerical work. The limits of the LBRG transformation in describing regions of the phase diagram where not ferromagnetic ground-states are relevant are also discussed.
