Singular Diffusion with Neumann boundary conditions

In this paper we develop an existence theory for the nonlinear initial-boundary value problem with singular diffusion $\partial_t u = \text{div}(k(x)\nabla G(u))$, $u|_{t=0}=u_0$ with Neumann boundary conditions $k(x)\nabla G(u)\cdot ν= 0$. Here $x\in B\subset \mathbb{R}^d$, a bounded open set with locally Lipchitz boundary, and with $ν$ as the unit outer normal. The function $G$ is Lipschitz continuous and nondecreasing, while $k(x)$ is diagonal matrix. We show that any two weak entropy solutions $u$ and $v$ satisfy $\Vert{u(t)-v(t)}\Vert_{L^1(B)}\le \Vert{u|_{t=0}-v|_{t=0}}\Vert_{L^1(B)}e^{Ct}$, for almost every $t\ge 0$, and a constant $C=C(k,G,B)$. If we restrict to the case when the entries $k_i$ of $k$ depend only on the corresponding component, $k_i=k_i(x_i)$, we show that there exists an entropy solution, thus establishing in this case that the problem is well-posed in the sense of Hadamard.

Singularity formation in fractional Burgers' equations

The formation of singularities in finite time in non-local Burgers' equations, with time-fractional derivative, is studied in detail. The occurrence of finite time singularity is proved, revealing the underlying mechanism, and precise estimates on the blow-up time are provided. The employment of the present equation to model a problem arising in job market is also analyzed.

Well-posedness of the initial value problem for the Ostrovsky-Hunter equation with spatially dependent flux

In this paper we study the Ostrovsky-Hunter equation for the case where the flux function $f(x, u)$ may depend on the spatial variable with certain smoothness. Our main results are that if the flux function is smooth enough (specified later), then there exists a unique entropy solution. To show the existence, after proving some a priori estimates we have used the method of compensated compactness and to prove the uniqueness we have employed the method of doubling of variables.

Numerical Methods for the Nonlocal Wave Equation of the Peridynamics

In this paper we will consider the peridynamic equation of motion which is described by a second order in time partial integro-differential equation. This equation has recently received great attention in several fields of Engineering because seems to provide an effective approach to modeling mechanical systems avoiding spatial discontinuous derivatives and body singularities. In particular, we will consider the linear model of peridynamics in a one-dimensional spatial domain. Here we will review some numerical techniques to solve this equation and propose some new computational methods of higher order in space; moreover we will see how to apply the methods studied for the linear model to the nonlinear one. Also a spectral method for the spatial discretization of the linear problem will be discussed. Several numerical tests will be given in order to validate our results.

On the optimization of conservation law models at a junction with inflow and flow distribution controls

The paper proposes a general framework to analyze control problems for conservation law models on a network. Namely we consider a general class of junction distribution controls and inflow controls and we establish the compactness in $L^1$ of a class of flux-traces of solutions. We then derive the existence of solutions for two optimization problems: (I) the maximization of an integral functional depending on the flux-traces of solutions evaluated at points of the incoming and outgoing edges; (II) the minimization of the total variation of the optimal solutions of problem (I). Finally we provide an equivalent variational formulation of the min-max problem (II) and we discuss some numerical simulations for a junction with two incoming and two outgoing edges.

Wellposedness of a nonlinear peridynamic model

We consider an evolution equation inspired by a model in peridynamics, with a singular pairwise interaction force term, and we give global in time existence, uniqueness and stability results for the Cauchy problem.

Well-posedness for a monotone solver for traffic junctions

In this paper we aim at proving well-posedness of solutions obtained as vanishing viscosity limits for the Cauchy problem on a traffic junction where $m$ incoming and $n$ outgoing roads meet. The traffic on each road is governed by a scalar conservation law $ ρ_{h,t} + f_h(ρ_h)_x = 0$, for $h\in \{1,\ldots, m+n\}$. Our proof relies upon the complete description of the set of road-wise constant solutions and its properties, which is of some interest on its own. Then we introduce a family of Kruzhkov-type adapted entropies at the junction and state a definition of admissible solution in the same spirit as in \cite{diehl, ColomboGoatinConstraint, scontrainte, AC_transmission, germes}.

Nonlinear waves in adhesive strings

We study a 1D semilinear wave equation modeling the dynamic of an elastic string interacting with a rigid substrate through an adhesive layer. The constitutive law of the adhesive material is assumed elastic up to a finite critical state, beyond such a value the stress discontinuously drops to zero. Therefore the semilinear equation is characterized by a source term presenting jump discontinuity. Well-posedness of the initial boundary value problem of Neumann type, as well as qualitative properties of the solutions are studied and the evolution of different initial conditions are numerically investigated.

Convergence of the regularized short pulse equation to the short pulse one

We consider the regularized short-pulse equation, which contains nonlinear dis- persive effects. We prove that as the diffusion parameter tends to zero, the solutions of the dispersive equation converge to discontinuous weak solutions of the short-pulse one. The proof relies on deriving suitable a priori estimates together with an application of the compensated compactness method in the Lp setting.

Analytic solutions and Singularity formation for the Peakon b--Family equations

Using the Abstract Cauchy-Kowalewski Theorem we prove that the $b$-family equation admits, locally in time, a unique analytic solution. Moreover, if the initial data is real analytic and it belongs to $H^s$ with $s > 3/2$, and the momentum density $u_0 - u_{0,{xx}}$ does not change sign, we prove that the solution stays analytic globally in time, for $b\geq 1$. Using pseudospectral numerical methods, we study, also, the singularity formation for the $b$-family equations with the singularity tracking method. This method allows us to follow the process of the singularity formation in the complex plane as the singularity approaches the real axis, estimating the rate of decay of the Fourier spectrum.

An explicit finite difference scheme for the Camassa-Holm equation

We put forward and analyze an explicit finite difference scheme for the Camassa-Holm shallow water equation that can handle general $H^1$ initial data and thus peakon-antipeakon interactions. Assuming a specified condition restricting the time step in terms of the spatial discretization parameter, we prove that the difference scheme converges strongly in $H^1$ towards a dissipative weak solution of Camassa-Holm equation.

Stability of solutions of quasilinear parabolic equations

We bound the difference between solutions $u$ and $v$ of $u_t = aΔu+\Div_x f+h$ and $v_t = bΔv+\Div_x g+k$ with initial data $ϕ$ and $ ψ$, respectively, by $\Vert u(t,\cdot)-v(t,\cdot)\Vert_{L^p(E)}\le A_E(t)\Vert ϕ-ψ\Vert_{L^\infty(\R^n)}^{2ρ_p}+ B(t)(\Vert a-b\Vert_{\infty}+ \Vert \nabla_x\cdot f-\nabla_x\cdot g\Vert_{\infty}+ \Vert f_u-g_u\Vert_{\infty} + \Vert h-k\Vert_{\infty})^{ρ_p} \abs{E}^{η_p}$. Here all functions $a$, $f$, and $h$ are smooth and bounded, and may depend on $u$, $x\in\R^n$, and $t$. The functions $a$ and $h$ may in addition depend on $\nabla u$. Identical assumptions hold for the functions that determine the solutions $v$. Furthermore, $E\subset\R^n$ is assumed to be a bounded set, and $ρ_p$ and $η_p$ are fractions that depend on $n$ and $p$. The diffusion coefficients $a$ and $b$ are assumed to be strictly positive and the initial data are smooth.

Viscosity solutions of Hamilton--Jacobi equations with discontinuous coefficients

We consider Hamilton--Jacobi equations, where the Hamiltonian depends discontinuously on both the spatial and temporal location. Our main results are the existence and well--posedness of a viscosity solution to the Cauchy problem. We define a viscosity solution by treating the discontinuities in the coefficients analogously to ``internal boundaries''. By defining an appropriate penalization function, we prove that viscosity solutions are unique. The existence of viscosity solutions is established by showing that a sequence of front tracking approximations is compact in $L^\infty$, and that the limits are viscosity solutions.

Solitary waves for Maxwell-Schrodinger equations

In this paper we study the solitary waves for the coupled Schrödinger - Maxwell equations in three-dimensional space. We prove the existence of a sequence of radial solitary waves for these equations with a fixed $L^2$ norm. We study the asymptotic behavior and the smoothness of these solutions. We show also the fact that the eigenvalues are negative and the first one is isolated.

On the Attainable set for Temple Class Systems with Boundary Controls

Consider the initial-boundary value problem for a strictly hyperbolic, genuinely nonlinear, Temple class system of conservation laws % $$ u_t+f(u)_x=0, \qquad u(0,x)=\ov u(x), \qquad {{array}{ll} &u(t,a)=\widetilde u_a(t), \noalign{\smallskip} &u(t,b)=\widetilde u_b(t), {array}. \eqno(1) $$ on the domain $Ω=\{(t,x)\in\R^2 : t\geq 0, a \le x\leq b\}.$ We study the mixed problem (1) from the point of view of control theory, taking the initial data $\bar u$ fixed, and regarding the boundary data $\widetilde u_a, \widetilde u_b$ as control functions that vary in prescribed sets $\U_a, \U_b$, of $\li$ boundary controls. In particular, we consider the family of configurations $$ \A(T) \doteq \big\{u(T,\cdot); ~ u {\rm is a sol. to} (1), \quad \widetilde u_a\in \U_a, \widetilde u_b \in \U_b \big\} $$ that can be attained by the system at a given time $T>0$, and we give a description of the attainable set $\A(T)$ in terms of suitable Oleinik-type conditions. We also establish closure and compactness of the set $\A(T)$ in the $lu$ topology.
