Differential Geometry of Quantum States, Observables and Evolution

The geometrical description of Quantum Mechanics is reviewed and proposed as an alternative picture to the standard ones. The basic notions of observables, states, evolution and composition of systems are analised from this perspective, the relevant geometrical structures and their associated algebraic properties are highlighted, and the Qubit example is thoroughly discussed.

Generalised Potential Functions in Differential Geometry and Information Geometry

Potential functions can be used as generating potentials of relevant geometric structures for a Riemannian manifold such as the Riemannian metric and affine connections. We study wether this procedure can also be applied to tensors of rank four and find a negative answer. We study this from the perspective of solving the inverse problem and also from an intrinsic point of view.

Measuring quantumness: from theory to observability in interferometric setups

We investigate the notion of quantumness based on the non-commutativity of the algebra of observables and introduce a measure of quantumness based on the mutual incompatibility of quantum states. We show that such a quantity can be experimentally measured with an interferometric setup and that, when an arbitrary bipartition of a given composite system is introduced, it detects the one-way quantum correlations restricted to one of the two subsystems. We finally show that, by combining only two projective measurements and carrying out the interference procedure, our measure becomes an efficient universal witness of quantum discord and non-classical correlations.

Stratified Manifold of Quantum States, actions of the complex special linear group

We review the geometry of the space of quantum states $\mathscr{S}(\mathcal{H})$ of a finite-level quantum system with Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ from a group-theoretical point of view. This space carries two stratifications generated by the action of two different Lie groups: the special unitary group $\mathcal{SU}(\mathcal{H})$ and its complexification $\mathcal{SL}(\mathcal{H})$, the complex special linear group. A stratum of the stratification generated by $\mathcal{SU}(\mathcal{H})$ is composed of isospectral states, that is, density operators with the same spectrum, A stratum of the stratification generated by $\mathcal{SL}(\mathcal{H})$ is composed of quantum states with the same rank. We prove that on every submanifold of isospectral quantum states there is also a canonical left action of $\mathcal{SL}(\mathcal{H})$ which is related with the canonical Kähler structure on isospectral quantum states. The fundamental vector fields of this $\mathcal{SL}(\mathcal{H})$-action are divided into Hamiltonian and gradient vector fields. The former give rise to invertible maps on $\mathscr{S}(\mathcal{H})$ that preserve the von Neumann entropy and the convex structure of $\mathscr{S}(\mathcal{H})$, while the latter give rise to invertible maps on $\mathscr{S}(\mathcal{H})$ that preserve the von Neumann entropy but not the convex structure of $\mathscr{S}(\mathcal{H})$. A similar decomposition is given for the $\mathcal{SL}(\mathcal{H})$-action generating the stratification of $\mathscr{S}(\mathcal{H})$ into manifolds of quantum states with the same rank, where gradient vector fields preserve the rank but do not preserve entropy. Some comments on multipartite quantum systems are made. It is proved that the sets of product states of a multipartite quantum system are homogeneous manifolds for the action of the complex special linear group associated with the partition.

Contact manifolds and dissipation, classical and quantum

Motivated by a geometric decomposition of the vector field associated with the Gorini-Kossakowski-Lindblad-Sudarshan (GKLS) equation for finite-level open quantum systems, we propose a generalization of the recently introduced contact Hamiltonian systems for the description of dissipative-like dynamical systems in the context of (non-necessarily exact) contact manifolds. In particular, we show how this class of dynamical systems naturally emerges in the context of Lagrangian Mechanics and in the case of nonlinear evolutions on the space of pure states of a finite-level quantum system.

A gentle introduction to Schwinger's formulation of quantum mechanics: The groupoid picture

In this short letter we review Schwinger's formulation of Quantum Mechanics and we argue that the mathematical structure behind Schwinger's "Symbolism of Atomic Measurements" is that of a groupoid. In this framework, both the Hilbert space (Schrödinger picture) and the $C^{*}$-algebra (Heisenberg picture) of the system turn out to be derived concepts, that is, they arise from the underlying groupoid structure.

A Pedagogical Intrinsic Approach to Relative Entropies as Potential Functions of Quantum Metrics: the $q$-$z$ Family

The so-called $q$-z-\textit{Rényi Relative Entropies} provide a huge two-parameter family of relative entropies which includes almost all well-known examples of quantum relative entropies for suitable values of the parameters. In this paper we consider a log-regularized version of this family and use it as a family of potential functions to generate covariant $(0,2)$ symmetric tensors on the space of invertible quantum states in finite dimensions. The geometric formalism developed here allows us to obtain the explicit expressions of such tensor fields in terms of a basis of globally defined differential forms on a suitable unfolding space without the need to introduce a specific set of coordinates. To make the reader acquainted with the intrinsic formalism introduced, we first perform the computation for the qubit case, and then, we extend the computation of the metric-like tensors to a generic $n$-level system. By suitably varying the parameters $q$ and $z$, we are able to recover well-known examples of quantum metric tensors that, in our treatment, appear written in terms of globally defined geometrical objects that do not depend on the coordinates system used. In particular, we obtain a coordinate-free expression for the von Neumann-Umegaki metric, for the Bures metric and for the Wigner-Yanase metric in the arbitrary $n$-level case.

Tomographic Reconstruction of Quantum Metrics

In the framework of quantum information geometry we investigate the relationship between monotone metric tensors uniquely defined on the space of quantum tomograms, once the tomographic scheme chosen, and monotone quantum metrics on the space of quantum states, classified by operator monotone functions, according to Petz classification theorem. We show that different metrics can be related through a change of the tomographic map and prove that there exists a bijective relation between monotone quantum metrics associated with different operator monotone functions. Such bijective relation is uniquely defined in terms of solutions of a first order second degree differential equation for the parameters of the involved tomographic maps. We first exhibit an example of a non-linear tomographic map which connects a monotone metric with a new one which is not monotone. Then we provide a second example where two monotone metrics are uniquely related through their tomographic parameters.

Geometrical Structures for Classical and Quantum Probability Spaces

On the affine space containing the space $\mathcal{S}$ of quantum states of finite-dimensional systems there are contravariant tensor fields by means of which it is possible to define Hamiltonian and gradient vector fields encoding relevant geometrical properties of $\mathcal{S}$. Guided by Dirac's analogy principle, we will use them as inspiration to define contravariant tensor fields, Hamiltonian and gradient vector fields on the affine space containing the space of fair probability distributions on a finite sample space and analyse their geometrical properties. Most of our considerations will be dealt with for the simple example of a three-level system.

Geometry of quantum dynamics in infinite dimension

We develop a geometric approach to quantum mechanics based on the concept of the Tulczyjew triple. Our approach is genuinely infinite-dimensional and including a Lagrangian formalism in which self-adjoint (Schroedinger) operators are obtained as Lagrangian submanifolds associated with the Lagrangian. As a byproduct we obtain also results concerning coadjoint orbits of the unitary group in infinite dimension, embedding of the Hilbert projective space of pure states in the unitary group, and an approach to self-adjoint extensions of symmetric relations.

Boundaries without boundaries

Starting with a quantum particle on a closed manifold without boundary, we consider the process of generating boundaries by modding out by a group action with fixed points, and we study the emergent quantum dynamics on the quotient manifold. As an illustrative example, we consider a free nonrelativistic quantum particle on the circle and generate the interval via parity reduction. A free particle with Neumann and Dirichlet boundary conditions on the interval is obtained, and, by changing the metric near the boundary, Robin boundary conditions can also be accommodated. We also indicate a possible method of generating non-local boundary conditions. Then, we explore an alternative generation mechanism which makes use of a folding procedure and is applicable to a generic Hamiltonian through the emergence of an ancillary spin degree of freedom.

Hamilton-Jacobi Theory and Information Geometry

Recently, a method to dynamically define a divergence function $D$ for a given statistical manifold $(\mathcal{M}\,,g\,,T)$ by means of the Hamilton-Jacobi theory associated with a suitable Lagrangian function $\mathfrak{L}$ on $T\mathcal{M}$ has been proposed. Here we will review this construction and lay the basis for an inverse problem where we assume the divergence function $D$ to be known and we look for a Lagrangian function $\mathfrak{L}$ for which $D$ is a complete solution of the associated Hamilton-Jacobi theory. To apply these ideas to quantum systems, we have to replace probability distributions with probability amplitudes.

Dynamical aspects in the Quantizer-Dequantizer formalism

The use of the quantizer-dequantizer formalism to describe the evolution of a quantum system is reconsidered. We show that it is possible to embed a manifold in the space of quantum states of a given auxiliary system by means of an appropriate quantizer-dequantizer system. If this manifold of states is invariant with respect to some unitary evolution, the quantizer-dequantizer system provides a classical-like realization of such dynamics, which in general is non linear. Integrability properties are also discussed. Weyl systems and generalized coherente states are used as a simple illustration of these ideas.

Dynamical Vector Fields on the Manifold of Quantum States

In this paper we shall consider the stratified manifold of quantum states and the vector fields which act on it. In particular, we show that the infinitesimal generator of the GKLS evolution is composed of a generator of unitary transformations plus a gradient vector field along with a Kraus vector field transversal to the strata defined by the involutive distribution generated by the former ones.

Metric on the space of quantum states from relative entropy. Tomographic reconstruction

In the framework of quantum information geometry, we derive, from quantum relative Tsallis entropy, a family of quantum metrics on the space of full rank, N level quantum states, by means of a suitably defined coordinate free differential calculus. The cases N = 2, N = 3 are discussed in detail and notable limits are analyzed. The radial limit procedure has been used to recover quantum metrics for lower rank states, such as pure states. By using the tomographic picture of quantum mechanics we have obtained the Fisher- Rao metric for the space of quantum tomograms and derived a reconstruction formula of the quantum metric of density states out of the tomographic one. A new inequality obtained for probabilities of three spin-1/2 projections in three perpendicular directions is proposed to be checked in experiments with superconducting circuits.

Covariant Jacobi Brackets for Test Particles

We show that the space of observables of test particles carries a natural Jacobi structure which is manifestly invariant under the action of the Poincaré group. Poisson algebras may be obtained by imposing further requirements. A generalization of Peierls procedure is used to extend this Jacobi bracket on the space of time-like geodesics on Minkowski space-time.
