Geometry of quantum systems: density states and entanglement

Various problems concerning the geometry of the space $u^*(\cH)$ of Hermitian operators on a Hilbert space $\cH$ are addressed. In particular, we study the canonical Poisson and Riemann-Jordan tensors and the corresponding foliations into Kähler submanifolds. It is also shown that the space $\cD(\cH)$ of density states on an $n$-dimensional Hilbert space $\cH$ is naturally a manifold stratified space with the stratification induced by the the rank of the state. Thus the space $\cD^k(\cH)$ of rank-$k$ states, $k=1,...,n$, is a smooth manifold of (real) dimension $2nk-k^2-1$ and this stratification is maximal in the sense that every smooth curve in $\cD(\cH)$, viewed as a subset of the dual $u^*(\cH)$ to the Lie algebra of the unitary group $U(\cH)$, at every point must be tangent to the strata $\cD^k(\cH)$ it crosses. For a quantum composite system, i.e. for a Hilbert space decomposition $\cH=\cH^1\ot\cH^2$, an abstract criterion of entanglement is proved.

Homology and modular classes of Lie algebroids

For a Lie algebroid, divergences chosen in a classical way lead to a uniquely defined homology theory. They define also, in a natural way, modular classes of certain Lie algebroid morphisms. This approach, applied for the anchor map, recovers the concept of modular class due to S. Evans, J.-H. Lu, and A. Weinstein.

Reduction and unfolding: the Kepler problem

In this paper we show, in a systematic way, how to relate the Kepler problem to the isotropic harmonic oscillator. Unlike previous approaches, our constructions are carried over in the Lagrangian formalism dealing with second order vector fields. We therefore provide a tangent bundle version of the Kustaahneimo-Stiefel map.

Courant algebroid and Lie bialgebroid contractions

Contractions of Leibniz algebras and Courant algebroids by means of (1,1)-tensors are introduced and studied. An appropriate version of Nijenhuis tensors leads to natural deformations of Dirac structures and Lie bialgebroids. One recovers presymplectic-Nijenhuis structures, Poisson-Nijenhuis structures, and triangular Lie bialgebroids as particular examples.

Classical brackets for dissipative systems

We show how to write a set of brackets for the Langevin equation, describing the dissipative motion of a classical particle, subject to external random forces. The method does not rely on an action principle, and is based solely on the phenomenological description of the dissipative dynamics as given by the Langevin equation. The general expression for the brackets satisfied by the coordinates, as well as by the external random forces, at different times, is determined, and it turns out that they all satisfy the Jacobi identity. Upon quantization, these classical brackets are found to coincide with the commutation rules for the quantum Langevin equation, that have been obtained in the past, by appealing to microscopic conservative quantum models for the friction mechanism.

Peierls Brackets in Field Theory

Peierls brackets are part of the space-time approach to quantum field theory, and provide a Poisson bracket which, being defined for pairs of observables which are group invariant, is group invariant by construction. It is therefore well suited for combining the use of Poisson brackets and the full diffeomorphism group in general relativity. The present paper provides an introduction to the topic, with applications to gauge field theory.

The graded Jacobi algebras and (co)homology

Jacobi algebroids (i.e. `Jacobi versions' of Lie algebroids) are studied in the context of graded Jacobi brackets on graded commutative algebras. This unifies varios concepts of graded Lie structures in geometry and physics. A method of describing such structures by classical Lie algebroids via certain gauging (in the spirit of E.Witten's gauging of exterior derivative) is developed. One constructs a corresponding Cartan differential calculus (graded commutative one) in a natural manner. This, in turn, gives canonical generating operators for triangular Jacobi algebroids. One gets, in particular, the Lichnerowicz-Jacobi homology operators associated with classical Jacobi structures. Courant-Jacobi brackets are obtained in a similar way and use to define an abstract notion of a Courant-Jacobi algebroid and Dirac-Jacobi structure. All this offers a new flavour in understanding the Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism.

Non-symplectic symmetries and bi-Hamiltonian structures of the rational Harmonic Oscillator

The existence of bi-Hamiltonian structures for the rational Harmonic Oscillator (non-central harmonic oscillator with rational ratio of frequencies) is analyzed by making use of the geometric theory of symmetries. We prove that these additional structures are a consequence of the existence of dynamical symmetries of non-symplectic (non-canonical) type. The associated recursion operators are also obtained.

Interference and entanglement: an intrinsic approach

An addition rule of impure density operators, which provides a pure state density operator, is formulated. Quantum interference including visibility property is discussed in the context of the density operator formalism. A measure of entanglement is then introduced as the norm of the matrix equal to the difference between a bipartite density matrix and the tensor product of partial traces. Entanglement for arbitrary quantum observables for multipartite systems is discussed. Star-product kernels are used to map the formulation of the addition rule of density operators onto the addition rule of symbols of the operators. Entanglement and nonlocalization of the pure state projector and allied operators are discussed. Tomographic and Weyl symbols (tomograms and Wigner functions) are considered as examples. The squeezed-states and some spin-states (two qubits) are studied to illustrate the formalism.

Binary operations in classical and quantum mechanics

Binary operations on algebras of observables are studied in the quantum as well as in the classical case. It is shown that certain natural compatibility conditions with the associative product imply the properties which usually are additionally required. In particular, it is proved that locality of a Loday bracket on sections of a one-dimensional vector bundle forces skew-symmetry, i.e. a local Lie algebra structure in the sense of A.A.Kirillov.

Jacobi structures revisited

Jacobi algebroids, that is graded Lie brackets on the Grassmann algebra associated with a vector bundle which satisfy a property similar to that of the Jacobi brackets, are introduced. They turn out to be equivalent to generalized Lie algebroids in the sense of Iglesias and Marrero and can be viewed also as odd Jacobi brackets on the supermanifolds associated with the vector bundles. Jacobi bialgebroids are defined in the same manner. A lifting procedure of elements of this Grassmann algebra to multivector fields on the total space of the vector bundle which preserves the corresponding brackets is developed. This gives the possibility of associating canonically a Lie algebroid with any local Lie algebra in the sense of Kirillov.

Dynamics of autonomous systems with external forces

We consider a geometric framework for analytical mechanics with external forces. Four versions of this framework are considered. A variational principle with boundary terms and external forces. The second and the third versions are the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations, respectively. The last one is the Poisson formulation. An extensive introductory section presents some well known and some little known geometric constructions to put our formulation in the appropriate setting to make the comparison of the different formulations easier.

Remarks on Nambu-Poisson and Nambu-Jacobi brackets

It is shown that Nambu-Poisson and Nambu-Jacobi brackets can be defined inductively: a n-bracket, n>2, is Nambu-Poisson (resp. Nambu-Jacobi) if and only if fixing an argument we get a (n-1)-Nambu-Poisson (resp. Nambu-Jacobi) bracket. As a by-product we get relatively simple proofs of Darboux-type theorems for these structures.

On Filippov algebroids and multiplicative Nambu-Poisson structures

We discuss relations between linear Nambu-Poisson structures and Filippov algebras and define Filippov algebroids which are n-ary generalizations of Lie algebroids. We also prove results describing multiplicative Nambu- Poisson structures on Lie groups. In particular, we show that simple Lie groups do not admit multiplicative Nambu-Poisson structures of order n>2.
