QCD, New Physics and Experiment

I give a summary of Section E of the seventh edition of the Conference ''Quark confinement and the hadron spectrum". Papers were presented on different subjects, from spectroscopy, including pentaquarks and hadron structure, to the quest for physics beyond the standard model.

Evaluating the phase diagram of superconductors with asymmetric spin populations

The phase diagram of a non-relativistic fermionic system with imbalanced state populations interacting via a short-range S-wave attractive interaction is analyzed in the mean field approximation. We determine the energetically favored state for different values of the mismatch between the two Fermi spheres in the weak and strong coupling regime considering both homogeneous and non-homogeneous superconductive states. We find that the homogeneous superconductive phase persists for values of the population imbalance that increase with increasing coupling strength. In the strong coupling regime and for large population differences the energetically stable homogeneous phase is characterized by one gapless mode. We also find that the inhomogeneous superconductive phase characterized by the condensate $Δ({\bf x}) \sim Δ~\exp{(i \bf{q \cdot x})}$ is energetically favored in a range of values of the chemical potential mismatch that shrinks to zero in the strong coupling regime.

Indications of a Pseudogap in the Nambu Jona-Lasinio model

The survival of \bar q q bound states at temperatures higher than the chiral restoration temperature, T_c, recently observed in lattice QCD, is discussed in the framework of the Nambu Jona-Lasinio model. The perturbative determination of the spectral function provides an indication of a pseudogap phase above T_c.

Role of final state interactions in the B meson decay into two pions

We estimate final state interactions in the B-meson decays into two pions by the Regge model. We consider Pomeron exchange and the leading Regge trajectories that can relate intermediate particles to the final state. In some cases, most notably B => pi^0 pi^0 and B => pi^+ pi^-, the effect is relevant and produces a better agreement between theory and experiment.

Final state interactions for B => VV charmless decays

We estimate final state interactions in the B-meson decays into two light vector mesons by the Regge model. We consider Pomeron exchange and charmed Regge trajectories that can relate intermediate charmed particles to the final state. The Regge poles have various helicity-flip residues, which allows a change from the longitudinal to transverse polarization. In this way a significant reduction of the longitudinal polarization fraction can be produced. In the factorization approximation we find agreement with recent data from the BaBar and Belle collaborations in the B => K* phi decay channel, as a result of an appropriate choice of semileptonic form factors and Regge exchanges. On the other hand, data for the K* rho decay channels appear more elusive. The soft effects discussed in the present paper are based on a model of Regge trajectories that is shown to reproduce correctly in the non-charmed case the Regge phenomenology of light mesons.

Inhomogeneous Superconductivity in Condensed Matter and QCD

Inhomogeneous superconductivity arises when the species participating in the pairing phenomenon have different Fermi surfaces with a large enough separation. In these conditions it could be more favorable for each of the pairing fermions to stay close to its Fermi surface and, differently from the usual BCS state, for the Cooper pair to have a non zero total momentum. For this reason in this state the gap varies in space, the ground state is inhomogeneous and a crystalline structure might be formed. This situation was considered for the first time by Fulde, Ferrell, Larkin and Ovchinnikov, and the corresponding state is called LOFF. The spontaneous breaking of the space symmetries in the vacuum state is a characteristic feature of this phase and is associated to the presence of long wave-length excitations of zero mass. The situation described here is of interest both in solid state and in elementary particle physics, in particular in Quantum Chromo-Dynamics at high density and small temperature. In this review we present the theoretical approach to the LOFF state and its phenomenological applications using the language of the effective field theories.

Effective Description of QCD at Very High Densities

We describe the effective lagrangian approach to the color superconductivity. The effective description that arises if one considers only the leading terms in the expansion for very high densities is particularly simple. It is based on a lagrangian whose effective fermion fields are velocity-dependent; moreover strong interactions do not change quark velocity and the effective lagrangian does not contain spin matrices. All these features render the effective theory similar to the Heavy Quark Effective Theory, which is the limit of Quantum ChromoDynamics for infinite quark masses. For this reason one can refer to the effective lagrangian at high density as the High Density Effective Theory (HDET). In some cases HDET results in analytical, though approximate, relations that are particularly simple to handle. After a pedagogical introduction, several topics are considered. They include the treatment of the Color-Flavor-Locking and the 2SC model, with evaluation of the gap parameters by the Nambu-Gorkov equations, approximate dispersion laws for the gluons and calculations of the Nambu-Goldstone Bosons properties. We also discuss the effective lagrangian for the crystalline color superconductive (LOFF) phase and we give a description of the phonon field related to the breaking of the rotational and translational invariance. Finally a few astrophysical applications of color superconductivity are discussed.

Effective Theory for QCD in the LOFF Phase

After a review of the crystalline color superconductive (LOFF) phase, I discuss the Nambu Goldstone Boson associated with the breaking of rotational and translational invariance and I briefly consider possible astrophysical implications.

Diluted neural networks with adapting and correlated synapses

We consider the dynamics of diluted neural networks with clipped and adapting synapses. Unlike previous studies, the learning rate is kept constant as the connectivity tends to infinity: the synapses evolve on a time scale intermediate between the quenched and annealing limits and all orders of synaptic correlations must be taken into account. The dynamics is solved by mean-field theory, the order parameter for synapses being a function. We describe the effects, in the double dynamics, due to synaptic correlations.
