On the conversion of neutron stars into quark stars

The possible existence of two families of compact stars, neutron stars and quark stars, naturally leads to a scenario in which a conversion process between the two stellar objects occurs with a consequent release of energy of the order of $10^{53}$ erg. We discuss recent hydrodynamical simulations of the burning process and neutrino diffusion simulations of cooling of a newly formed strange star. We also briefly discuss this scenario in connection with recent measurements of masses and radii of compact stars.

Spectral function of a scalar boson coupled to fermions

We present the calculation of the spectral function of an unstable scalar boson coupled to fermions as resulting from the resummation of the one loop diagrams in the scalar particle self energy. We work with a large but finite high-energy cutoff: in this way, the spectral function of the scalar field is always correctly normalized to unity, independently on the value of the cutoff. We show that this high energy cutoff affects the Breit-Wigner width of the unstable particle: the larger the cutoff, the smaller is the width at fixed coupling. Thus, the existence of a high energy cutoff (alias minimal length), and for instance the possible opening of new degrees of freedom beyond that energy scale, could then be in principle proven by measuring, at lower energy scales, the line shape of the unstable scalar state. Although the Lagrangian here considered represents only a toy-model, we discuss possible future extensions of our work which could be relevant for particle physics phenomenology.

Growth of magnetic fields in accreting millisecond pulsars

R-modes can generate strong magnetic fields in the core of accreting millisecond neutron stars (NSs). The diffusion of these fields outside the core causes the growth of the external magnetic field and thus it affects the evolution of the spin down rates $\dot{P}$ of the millisecond pulsars (MSPs). The diffusion of the internal magnetic field provides a new evolutionary path for the MSPs. This scenario could explain the large $\dot{P}$ of the pulsars J1823-3021A and J1824-2452A.

Oscillations in the decay law: A possible quantum mechanical explanation of the anomaly in the experiment at the GSI facility

We study the deviations from the usual exponential decay law for quantum mechanical systems. We show that simple and physically motivated deviations from the Breit-Wigner energy distribution of the unstable state are sufficient to generate peculiar deviations from the exponential decay law. Denoting with $p(t)$ the survival probability, its derivative $h(t)$ shows typically an oscillating behavior on top of the usual exponential function. We argue that this can be a viable explanation of the observed experimental results at GSI Darmstadt, where the function $h(t)$ has been experimentally measured for electron capture decays of Hydrogen-like ions. Moreover, if our interpretation is correct, we predict that by measuring $h(t)$ at times close to the initial one, the number of decays per second rapidly drops to zero.

(Oscillating) non-exponential decays of unstable states

We discuss deviations from the exponential decay law which originate when going beyond the Breit-Wigner distribution for an unstable state. In particular, we concentrate on an oscillating behavior, reminiscent of the Rabi-oscillations, in the short-time region. We propose that these oscillations can explain the GSI experiment, which measured superimposed oscillations on top of the exponential law for hydrogen-like nuclides decaying via electron-capture (the so-called GSI anomaly). Moreover, we discuss the possibility, that the deviations from the Breit-Wigner distribution in the case of the GSI anomaly are (predominantly) caused by the interaction of the unstable state with the measurement apparatus. The consequences of this scenario, such as the non-existence of oscillations in an analogous experiment performed at the Berkeley Lab, are investigated.

The Hypothesis of Superluminal Neutrinos: comparing OPERA with other Data

The OPERA Collaboration reported evidence for muonic neutrinos traveling slightly faster than light in vacuum. While waiting further checks from the experimental community, here we aim at exploring some theoretical consequences of the hypothesis that muonic neutrinos are superluminal, considering in particular the tachyonic and the Coleman-Glashow cases. We show that a tachyonic interpretation is not only hardly reconciled with OPERA data on energy dependence, but that it clashes with neutrino production from pion and with neutrino oscillations. A Coleman-Glashow superluminal neutrino beam would also have problems with pion decay kinematics for the OPERA setup; it could be easily reconciled with SN1987a data, but then it would be very problematic to account for neutrino oscillations.

Deviation from the exponential decay law in relativistic quantum field theory: the example of strongly decaying particles

We show that a short-time regime, in which a deviation from the exponential decay law occurs, exists also in the framework of a superrenormalizable relativistic quantum field theory. This, in turn, implies the possibility of a quantum Zeno effect also for elementary decays. The attention is then focused on the typical order of magnitude of strong decay rates of mesons: for these particles, strong deviations from the exponential decay law are present during a period of time comparable with their mean life time. As a concrete example, the case of the $ρ$ meson is studied.

Quark Matter In Massive Compact Stars

The recent observation of the pulsar PSR J1614-2230 with a mass of 1.97 +/- 0.04 M_sun gives a strong constraint on the quark and nuclear matter equations of state (EoS). We explore the parameter ranges for a parameterized EoS for quark stars. We find that strange stars, made of absolutely stable strange quark matter, comply with the new constraint only if effects from the strong coupling constant and color-superconductivity are taken into account. Hybrid stars, compact stars with a quark matter core and an hadronic outer layer, can be as massive as 2 M_sun, but only for a significantly limited range of parameters. We demonstrate that the appearance of quark matter in massive stars depends crucially on the stiffness of the nuclear matter EoS. We show that the masses of hybrid stars stay below the ones of hadronic and pure quark stars, due to the softening of the EoS at the quark-hadron phase transition.

Non exponential decays of hadrons

We analyze the survival probability of unstable particles in the context of quantum field theory. After introducing the spectral function of resonances, we show that deviations from the exponential decay law occur at short times after the creation of the unstable particle. For hadronic decays, these deviations are sizable and could lead to observable effects.

Nuclear matter within a dilatation-invariant parity doublet model: the role of the tetraquark at nonzero density

We investigate the role of a scalar tetraquark state for the description of nuclear matter within the parity doublet model in the mirror assignment. In the dilatation-invariant version of the model a nucleon-nucleon interaction term mediated by the lightest scalar tetraquark field naturally emerges. At nonzero density one has, beyond the usual chiral condensate, also a tetraquark condensate. The behavior of both condensates and the restoration of chiral symmetry at high density are studied. It is shown that this additional scalar degree of freedom affects non negligibly the properties of the medium.

Can a supernova bang twice?

The implications of a QCD phase transition at high temperatures and densities for core-collapse supernovae are discussed. For a strong first order phase transition to quark matter, various scenarios have been put forward in the literature. Here, detailed numerical simulations including neutrino transport are presented, where it is found that a second shock wave due to the QCD phase transition emerges shortly after bounce. It is demonstrated that such a supernova banging twice results in a second peak in the antineutrino spectrum. This second peak is clearly detectable in present neutrino detectors for a galactic supernova.

Strangeness in Astrophysics and Cosmology

Some recent developments concerning the role of strange quark matter for astrophysical systems and the QCD phase transition in the early universe are addressed. Causality constraints of the soft nuclear equation of state as extracted from subthreshold kaon production in heavy-ion collisions are used to derive an upper mass limit for compact stars. The interplay between the viscosity of strange quark matter and the gravitational wave emission from rotation-powered pulsars are outlined. The flux of strange quark matter nuggets in cosmic rays is put in perspective with a detailed numerical investigation of the merger of two strange stars. Finally, we discuss a novel scenario for the QCD phase transition in the early universe, which allows for a small inflationary period due to a pronounced first order phase transition at large baryochemical potential.

Quark-hadron mixed phases in protoneutron stars

We consider the possible formation of the quark hadron mixed phase in protoneutron stars. We discuss two cases: the first one, corresponding to a vanishingly small value of the surface tension of quark matter, is the well known mixed phase in which the global electric charge neutrality condition is imposed. In turn, this produces a non-constant pressure mixed phase. In the second case, corresponding to very large values of the surface tension, the charge neutrality condition holds only locally. However, the existence in protoneutron star matter of an additional globally conserved charge, the lepton number, allows for a new type of non-constant pressure mixed phase. We discuss the properties of the new mixed phase and the possible effects of its formation during the evolution of protoneutron stars.

Decay of light scalar mesons into vector-photon and into pseudoscalar mesons

The decays of a light scalar meson into a vector meson and a photon ($S\to Vγ)$ are evaluated in the tetraquark and quarkonium assignments of the scalar states. A link with the radiative decays $ϕ\to Sγ$ is established: experimental results for $S\to Vγ$ will allow to understand if the direct, quark-loop contribution to $ϕ\to Sγ$ or the kaon-loop contribution is dominant. Also strong decays $S\to PP$ -where $P$ denotes a pseudoscalar meson- are investigated: the tetraquark assignment works better than the quarkonium one. It is then also discussed why the tetraquark assignment is favoured with respect to a loosely bound kaonic molecular interpretation of $a_{0}(980)$ and $f_{0}(980)$ mesons.

The Strange Prospects for Astrophysics

The implications of the formation of strange quark matter in neutron stars and in core-collapse supernovae is discussed with special emphasis on the possibility of having a strong first order QCD phase transition at high baryon densities. If strange quark matter is formed in core-collapse supernovae shortly after the bounce, it causes the launch of a second outgoing shock which is energetic enough to lead to a explosion. A signal for the formation of strange quark matter can be read off from the neutrino spectrum, as a second peak in antineutrinos is released when the second shock runs over the neutrinosphere.

Astrophysical Implications of the QCD phase transition

The possible role of a first order QCD phase transition at nonvanishing quark chemical potential and temperature for cold neutron stars and for supernovae is delineated. For cold neutron stars, we use the NJL model with nonvanishing color superconducting pairing gaps, which describes the phase transition to the 2SC and the CFL quark matter phases at high baryon densities. We demonstrate that these two phase transitions can both be present in the core of neutron stars and that they lead to the appearance of a third family of solution for compact stars. In particular, a core of CFL quark matter can be present in stable compact star configurations when slightly adjusting the vacuum pressure to the onset of the chiral phase transition from the hadronic model to the NJL model. We show that a strong first order phase transition can have strong impact on the dynamics of core collapse supernovae. If the QCD phase transition sets in shortly after the first bounce, a second outgoing shock wave can be generated which leads to an explosion. The presence of the QCD phase transition can be read off from the neutrino and antineutrino signal of the supernova.

Brief report on `Radiative $ϕ$ decays with derivative interactions'

We study the line shapes of radiative $ϕ$-decays with a direct coupling of the $ϕ$ meson to the $f_{0}(980)$ and $a_{0}(980)$ scalar mesons. The latter couple via derivative interactions to $π_0 π_0$ and $π_0 η$, respectively. Although the kaon-loop mechanism is usually regarded as the dominant mechanism in radiative $ϕ$ decays, here we test a different possibility: we set the kaon-loop to zero and we fit the theoretical curves to the data by retaining only the direct coupling. Remarkably, satisfactory fits can be achieved, mainly due to the effects of derivative interactions of scalar with pseudoscalar mesons.

Radiative $ϕ$ decays with derivative interactions

We study the line shapes of radiative $ϕ$-decays involving virtual $f_{0}(980)$ and $a_{0}(980)$ mesons which decay, via derivative couplings, to $π^{0}π^{0}$ and $π^{0}η$ respectively. After developing the formalism for derivative interactions at one-loop level, we show that they can reproduce the measured peaked line shapes of $ϕ$-decays without including kaon loops.
