Local depth-based classification of directional data

Directional data arise in many applications where observations are naturally represented as unit vectors or as observations on the surface of a unit hypersphere. In this context, statistical depth functions provide a center--outward ordering of the data. This work aims at proposing the use of a local notion of data depth function to be applied in the DD-plot (Depth vs. Depth plot) to classify directional data. The proposed method is investigated through an extensive simulation study and two real-data examples.

Depth-based clustering analysis of directional data

A new depth-based clustering procedure for directional data is proposed. Such method is fully non-parametric and has the advantages to be flexible and applicable even in high dimensions when a suitable notion of depth is adopted. The introduced technique is evaluated through an extensive simulation study. In addition, a real data example in text mining is given to explain its effectiveness in comparison with other existing directional clustering algorithms.

The GLD-plot: A depth-based plot to investigate unimodality of directional data

A graphical tool for investigating unimodality of hyperspherical data is proposed. It is based on the notion of statistical data depth function for directional data which extends the univariate concept of rank. Firstly a local version of distance-based depths for directional data based on aims at analyzing the local structure of hyperspherical data is proposed. Then such notion is compared to the global version of data depth by means of a two-dimensional scatterplot, i.e. the GLD-plot. The proposal is illustrated on simulated and real data examples.

Distance-based Depths for Directional Data

Directional data are constrained to lie on the unit sphere of~$\mathbb{R}^q$ for some~$q\geq 2$. To address the lack of a natural ordering for such data, depth functions have been defined on spheres. However, the depths available either lack flexibility or are so computationally expensive that they can only be used for very small dimensions~$q$. In this work, we improve on this by introducing a class of distance-based depths for directional data. Irrespective of the distance adopted, these depths can easily be computed in high dimensions too. We derive the main structural properties of the proposed depths and study how they depend on the distance used. We discuss the asymptotic and robustness properties of the corresponding deepest points. We show the practical relevance of the proposed depths in two applications, related to (i) spherical location estimation and (ii) supervised classification. For both problems, we show through simulation studies that distance-based depths have strong advantages over their competitors.
