Complex frequency-dependent quadrature squeezing in semiconductor lasers

We present a comprehensive study of quadrature squeezing in a quantum well laser based on a fully quantum Langevin approach. We compute the frequency-resolved squeezing map of the laser field and identify optimal squeezing curves, revealing, for the first time to our knowledge, both frequency-dependent squeezing and complex or hidden squeezing in a semiconductor laser. We further analyse the role of the linewidth enhancement factor (alpha factor) in the emergence of these features. Our results establish semiconductor lasers as a platform for the generation of non-classical light and open new perspectives for their application in quantum communication and sensing.

Avoided crossings, degeneracies and Berry phases in the spectrum of quantum noise of driven-dissipative bosonic systems

Avoided crossings are fundamental phenomena in quantum mechanics and photonics that originate from the interaction between coupled energy levels and have been extensively studied in linear dispersive dynamics. Their manifestation in open, driven-dissipative systems, however, where nonlinear dynamics of quantum fluctuations come into play, remains largely unexplored. In this work, we analyze the hitherto unexplored occurrence of avoided and genuine crossings in the spectrum of quantum noise. We demonstrate that avoided crossings arise naturally when a single parameter is varied, leading to hypersensitivity of the associated singular vectors and suggesting the presence of genuine crossings (diabolical points) in nearby systems. We show that these spectral features can be deliberately designed, highlighting the possibility of programming the quantum noise response of photonic systems. As a notable example, such control can be exploited to generate broad, flat-band squeezing spectra - a desirable feature for enhancing degaussification protocols. Our analysis is based on a detailed study of the Analytic Bloch-Messiah Decomposition (ABMD), which we use to characterize the parameter-dependent behavior of singular values and their corresponding vectors. This study provides new insights into the structure of multimode quantum correlations and offers a theoretical framework for the experimental exploitation of complex quantum optical systems.

Multipartite quantum correlated bright frequency combs

This experimental work demonstrates multipartite quantum correlation in bright frequency combs out of a microresonator integrated on silicon nitride operating above its oscillation threshold. Multipartite features, going beyond so far reported two-mode correlation, naturally arise due to a cascade of non-linear optical processes, making a single-color laser pump sufficient to initiate their generation. Our results show the transition from two-mode to multipartite correlation, witnessed by noise reductions as low as $-2.5$\,dB and $-2$\,dB, respectively, compared to corresponding classical levels. A constant of the movement of the non-linear interaction Hamiltonian is identified and used to asses the multipartite behavior. Reported demonstrations pave the way to next generation on-chip multipartite sources for quantum technologies applications.

Hidden quantum correlations in cavity-based quantum optics

In multimode optical systems, the spectral covariance matrix encodes all the information about quantum correlations between the quadratures of Gaussian states. Recent research has revealed that, in scenarios that are more common than previously thought, part of these correlations remain inaccessible to standard homodyne detection scheme. Formally, this effect can be attributed to a non-real spectral covariance matrix. In this work, we provide a systematic framework and explicit criteria for identifying experimental configurations leading to such a behavior. This study will facilitate the proper exploitation and optimal engineering of CV quantum resources.

Universal quantum frequency comb measurements by spectral mode-matching

The frequency comb of a multimode interferometer offers exceptional scalability potential for field-encoded quantum information. However, the staple field detection method, homodyne detection, cannot access quantum information in the whole comb because some spectral quadratures (and their asymmetries with respect to the LO) are out of reach. We present here the first general approach to make arbitrary, one-shot measurements of a multimode quantum optical source, something that is required for photonic quantum computing and is not possible when using homodyne detection with a pulse-shaped LO. This approach uses spectral mode-matching, which can be understood as interferometry with a memory effect. We derive a complete formalism and propose an implementation by microcavity arrays.

Multipartite Entanglement in Bright Frequency Combs from Microresonators

We present a theoretical model of multimode quantum correlations in bright frequency combs generated in continuous-wave regime by microresonators above threshold. Our analysis shows how these correlations emerge from cascading four-wave mixing processes fed by the input pump as well as the generated bright beams. Logarithmic negativity criterion is employed to quantify entanglement between partitions of modes, demonstrating the transition from a bipartite regime just above the oscillation threshold to the multipartite one at higher input pump powers. Due to its generality, our model can be safely used to describe other kinds of non-linear $χ$ (3) cavities.

Hidden and detectable squeezing from micro-resonators

In the context of quantum integrated photonics, this work investigates the quantum properties of light generated by silicon and silicon nitride micro-resonators pumped in pulsed regime. The developed theoretical model, performed in terms of the morphing supermodes, provides a comprehensive description of the generated quantum states. Remarkably, it shows that a full measurement of states carrying optimal squeezing levels is not accessible to standard homodyne detection, thus leaving hidden part of generated quantum features. By presenting and discussing this behaviour, as well as possible strategies to amend it, this work proves itself essential to future quantum applications exploiting micro-resonators as sources of multimode states.

Generalized approach for enabling multimode quantum optics

We develop a universal approach enabling the study of any multimode quantum optical system evolving under a quadratic Hamiltonian. Our strategy generalizes the standard symplectic analysis and permits the treatment of multimode systems even in situations where traditional theoretical methods cannot be applied. This enables the description and investigation of a broad variety of key-resources for experimental quantum optics, ranging from optical parametric oscillators, to silicon-based micro-ring resonator, as well as opto-mechanical systems.

Space-time duality and quantum temporal imaging

Using the space-time analogy, we compare the performance of quantum temporal imaging with its classical counterpart. We consider a temporal imaging scheme, based on the sum-frequency generation (SFG) time lens, but our results can be applied to other temporal imaging schemes such as, for instance, four-wave mixing. Extending the theory presented in our previous publications, in this paper we take into account the finite time aperture of the imaging system, characterized by its pupil function. Using the quantum theory, we obtain a unitary transformation of the quantum field from the input to the output of the imaging scheme and identify the contribution of the vacuum fluctuations missing in the classical theory. This contribution plays a key role in the quantum temporal imaging of nonclassical temporal waveforms, characterized by nonclassical fluctuations of the electromagnetic field. As an example, we consider quantum temporal imaging of broadband squeezed light and formulate the criteria for conservation of its squeezing properties at the output of the system.

Measuring nonclassicality of bosonic field quantum states via operator ordering sensitivity

We introduce a new distance-based measure for the nonclassicality of the states of a bosonic field, which outperforms the existing such measures in several ways. We define for that purpose the operator ordering sensitivity of the state which evaluates the sensitivity to operator ordering of the Renyi entropy of its quasi-probabilities and which measures the oscillations in its Wigner function. Through a sharp control on the operator ordering sensitivity of classical states we obtain a precise geometric image of their location in the density matrix space allowing us to introduce a distance-based measure of nonclassicality. We analyse the link between this nonclassicality measure and a recently introduced quantum macroscopicity measure, showing how the two notions are distinct.

Bloch-Messiah decomposition and Magnus expansion for parametric down-conversion with monochromatic pump

We discuss the Bloch-Messiah decomposition for the broadband squeezed light generated by type-I parametric down-conversion with monochromatic pump. Using an exact solution for this process, we evaluate the squeezing parameters and the corresponding squeezing eigenmodes. Next, we consider the Magnus expansion of the quantum-mechanical evolution operator for this process and obtain its first three approximation orders. Using these approximated solutions, we evaluate the corresponding approximations for the Bloch-Messiah decomposition. Our results allow us to conclude that the first-order approximation of the Magnus expansion is sufficient for description of the broadband squeezed light for squeezing values below 12.5 dB. For higher degrees of squeezing we show fast convergence of the Magnus series providing a good approximation for the exact solution already in the third order. We propose a quantitative criterion for this ultra-high-gain regime of parametric down-conversion when the higher-orders terms of the Magnus expansion, known in the literature as the operator-ordering effects, become necessary.

Noncritical generation of nonclassical frequency combs via spontaneous rotational symmetry breaking

Synchronously pumped optical parametric oscillators (SPOPOs) are optical cavities containing a nonlinear crystal capable of down-converting a frequency comb to lower frequencies. These have received a lot of attention lately, because their intrinsic multimode nature makes them compact sources of quantum correlated light with promising applications in modern quantum information technologies. In this work we show that SPOPOs are also capable of accessing the challenging but interesting regime where spontaneous symmetry breaking plays a crucial role in the quantum properties of the emitted light, difficult to access with any other nonlinear optical cavity. Apart from opening the possibility of studying experimentally this elusive regime of dissipative phase transitions, our predictions will have a practical impact, since we show that spontaneous symmetry breaking provides a specific spatiotemporal mode with perfect squeezing for any value of the system parameters, turning SPOPOs into robust sources of highly nonclassical light above threshold.

Dissipative structures in optomechanical cavities

Motivated by the increasing interest in the properties of multimode optomechanical devices, here we study a system in which a driven mode of a large-area optical cavity is despersively coupled to a deformable mechanical element. Two different models naturally appear in such scenario, for which we predict the formation of periodic patterns, localized structures (cavity solitons), and domain walls, among other complex nonlinear phenomena. Further, we propose a realistic design based on intracavity membranes where our models can be studied experimentally. Apart from its relevance to the field of nonlinear optics, the results put forward here are a necessary step towards understanding the quantum properties of optomechanical systems in the multimode regime of both the optical and mechanical degrees of freedom.

Quantum coherent control of highly multipartite continuous-variable entangled states by tailoring parametric interactions

The generation of continuous-variable multipartite entangled states is important for several protocols of quantum information processing and communication, such as one-way quantum computation or controlled dense coding. In this article we theoretically show that multimode optical parametric oscillators can produce a great variety of such states by an appropriate control of the parametric interaction, what we accomplish by tailoring either the spatio-temporal shape of the pump, or the geometry of the nonlinear medium. Specific examples involving currently available optical parametric oscillators are given, hence showing that our ideas are within reach of present technology.

Quantum theory of Synchronously Pumped type I Optical Parametric Oscillators: characterization of the squeezed supermodes

Quantum models for synchronously pumped type I optical parametric oscillators (SPOPO) are presented. The study of the dynamics of SPOPOs, which typically involves millions of coupled signal longitudinal modes, is significantly simplified when one considers the ?supermodes?, which are independent linear superpositions of all the signal modes diagonalizing the parametric interaction. In terms of these supermodes the SPOPO dynamics becomes that of about a hundred of independent, single mode degenerate OPOs, each of them being a squeezer. One derives a general expression for the squeezing spectrum measured in a balanced homodyne detection experiment, valid for any temporal shape of the local oscillator. Realistic cases are then studied using both analytical and numerical methods: the oscillation threshold is derived, and the spectral and temporal shapes of the squeezed supermodes are characterized.

Squeezing frequency combs

We have developed the full theory of a synchronously pumped type I optical parametric oscillator (SPOPO). We derive expressions for the oscillation threshold and the characteristics of the generated mode-locked signal beam. We calculate the output quantum fluctuations of the device, and find that, in the degenerate case (coincident signal and idler set of frequencies), perfect squeezing is obtained when one approaches threshold from below for a well defined "super-mode', or frequency comb, consisting of a coherent linear superposition of signal modes of different frequencies which are resonant in the cavity.
