Contraction of general transportation costs along solutions to Fokker-Planck equations with monotone drifts

We shall prove new contraction properties of general transportation costs along nonnegative measure-valued solutions to Fokker-Planck equations in $R^d$, when the drift is a monotone (or $λ$-monotone) operator. A new duality approach to contraction estimates has been developed: it relies on the Kantorovich dual formulation of optimal transportation problems and on a variable-doubling technique. The latter is used to derive a new comparison property of solutions of the backward Kolmogorov (or dual) equation. The advantage of this technique is twofold: it directly applies to distributional solutions without requiring stronger regularity and it extends the Wasserstein theory of Fokker-Planck equations with gradient drift terms started by Jordan-Kinderlehrer-Otto (1998) to more general costs and monotone drifts, without requiring the drift to be a gradient and without assuming any growth conditions.

From diffusion to reaction via Gamma-convergence

We study the limit of high activation energy of a special Fokker-Planck equation, known as Kramers-Smoluchowski (K-S) equation. This equation governs the time evolution of the probability density of a particle performing a Brownian motion under the influence of a chemical potential H/e. We choose H having two wells corresponding to two chemical states A and B. We prove that after a suitable rescaling the solution to (K-S) converges, in the limit of high activation energy (e -> 0), to the solution of a simple system modeling the diffusion of A and B, and the reaction A <-> B. The aim of this paper is to give a rigorous proof of Kramer's formal derivation and to embed chemical reactions and diffusion processes in a common variational framework which allows to derive the former as a singular limit of the latter, thus establishing a connection between two worlds often regarded as separate. The singular limit is analysed by means of Gamma-convergence in the space of finite Borel measures endowed with the weak-* topology.

A Wasserstein approach to the one-dimensional sticky particle system

We present a simple approach to study the one-dimensional pressureless Euler system via adhesion dynamics in the Wasserstein space of probability measures with finite quadratic moments. Starting from a discrete system of a finite number of "sticky" particles, we obtain new explicit estimates of the solution in terms of the initial mass and momentum and we are able to construct an evolution semigroup in a measure-theoretic phase space, allowing mass distributions with finite quadratic moment and corresponding L^2-velocity fields. We investigate various interesting properties of this semigroup, in particular its link with the gradient flow of the (opposite) squared Wasserstein distance. Our arguments rely on an equivalent formulation of the evolution as a gradient flow in the convex cone of nondecreasing functions in the Hilbert space L^2(0,1), which corresponds to the Lagrangian system of coordinates given by the canonical monotone rearrangement of the measures.

Nonlinear mobility continuity equations and generalized displacement convexity

We consider the geometry of the space of Borel measures endowed with a distance that is defined by generalizing the dynamical formulation of the Wasserstein distance to concave, nonlinear mobilities. We investigate the energy landscape of internal, potential, and interaction energies. For the internal energy, we give an explicit sufficient condition for geodesic convexity which generalizes the condition of McCann. We take an eulerian approach that does not require global information on the geodesics. As by-product, we obtain existence, stability, and contraction results for the semigroup obtained by solving the homogeneous Neumann boundary value problem for a nonlinear diffusion equation in a convex bounded domain. For the potential energy and the interaction energy, we present a non-rigorous argument indicating that they are not displacement semiconvex.

Modeling solutions with jumps for rate-independent systems on metric spaces

Rate-independent systems allow for solutions with jumps that need additional modeling. Here we suggest a formulation that arises as limit of viscous regularization of the solutions in the extended state space. Hence, our parametrized metric solutions of a rate-independent system are absolutely continuous mappings from a parameter interval into the extended state space. Jumps appear as generalized gradient flows during which the time is constant. The closely related notion of BV solutions is developed afterwards. Our approach is based on the abstract theory of generalized gradient flows in metric spaces, and comparison with other notions of solutions is given.

On the Bakry-Emery criterion for linear diffusions and weighted porous media equations

The goal of this paper is to give a non-local sufficient condition for generalized Poincaré inequalities, which extends the well-known Bakry-Emery condition. Such generalized Poincaré inequalities have been introduced by W. Beckner in the gaussian case and provide, along the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck flow, the exponential decay of some generalized entropies which interpolate between the $L^2$ norm and the usual entropy. Our criterion improves on results which, for instance, can be deduced from the Bakry-Emery criterion and Holley-Stroock type perturbation results. In a second step, we apply the same strategy to non-linear equations of porous media type. This provides new interpolation inequalities and decay estimates for the solutions of the evolution problem. The criterion is again a non-local condition based on the positivity of the lowest eigenvalue of a Schrödinger operator. In both cases, we relate the Fisher information with its time derivative. Since the resulting criterion is non-local, it is better adapted to potentials with, for instance, a non-quadratic growth at infinity, or to unbounded perturbations of the potential.
