Making the motivic group structure on the endomorphisms of the projective line explicit

We construct a group structure on the set of pointed naive homotopy classes of scheme morphisms from the Jouanolou device to the projective line. The group operation is defined via matrix multiplication on generating sections of line bundles and only requires basic algebraic geometry. In particular, it is completely independent of the construction of the motivic homotopy category. We show that a particular scheme morphism, which exhibits the Jouanolou device as an affine torsor bundle over the projective line, induces a monoid morphism from Cazanave's monoid to this group. Moreover, we show that this monoid morphism is a group completion to a subgroup of the group of scheme morphisms from the Jouanolou device to the projective line. This subgroup is generated by a set of morphisms that are simple to describe.

Representability of the local motivic Brouwer degree

We study which quadratic forms are representable as the local degree of a map $f : A^n \to A^n$ with an isolated zero at $0$, following the work of Kass and Wickelgren who established the connection to the quadratic form of Eisenbud, Khimshiashvili, and Levine. Our main observation is that over some base fields $k$, not all quadratic forms are representable as a local degree. Empirically the local degree of a map $f : A^n \to A^n$ has many hyperbolic summands, and we prove that in fact this is the case for local degrees of low rank. We establish a complete classification of the quadratic forms of rank at most $7$ that are representable as the local degree of a map over all base fields of characteristic different from $2$. The number of hyperbolic summands was also studied by Eisenbud and Levine, where they establish general bounds on the number of hyperbolic forms that must appear in a quadratic form that is representable as a local degree. Our proof method is elementary and constructive in the case of rank 5 local degrees, while the work of Eisenbud and Levine is more general. We provide further families of examples that verify that the bounds of Eisenbud and Levine are tight in several cases.

Strong convergence in the motivic Adams spectral sequence

We prove strong convergence results for the motivic Adams spectral sequence of the sphere spectrum over fields with finite virtual cohomological dimension at the prime 2, and over arbitrary fields at odd primes. We show that the motivic Adams spectral sequence is not strongly convergent over number fields. As applications we give bounds on the exponents of the $(\ell,η)$-completed motivic stable stems, and calculate the zeroth $(\ell,η)$-completed motivic stable stems.

The eta-inverted sphere over the rationals

We calculate the motivic stable homotopy groups of the two-complete sphere spectrum after inverting multiplication by the Hopf map eta over fields of cohomological dimension at most 2 with characteristic different from 2 (this includes the p-adic fields and the finite fields of odd characteristic) and the field of rational numbers; the ring structure is also determined.
