Connection between a possible fifth force and the direct detection of Dark Matter

If there is a fifth force in the dark sector and dark sector particles interact non-gravitationally with ordinary matter, quantum corrections generically lead to a fifth force in the visible sector. We show how the strong experimental limits on fifth forces in the visible sector constrain the direct detection cross section, and the strength of the fifth force in the dark sector. If the latter is comparable to gravity, the spin-independent direct detection cross section must typically be <~ 10^{-55} cm^2. The anomalous acceleration of ordinary matter falling towards dark matter is also constrained: η_{OM-DM} <~ 10^{-8}.

Galaxies Correlating with Ultra-high Energy Cosmic Rays

The Pierre Auger Observatory reports that 20 of the 27 highest energy cosmic rays have arrival directions within 3.2 deg of a nearby galaxy in the Veron-Cetty & Veron Catalog of Quasars and Active Galactic Nuclei (12th Ed.), with ~5 of the correlations expected by chance. In this paper we examine the correlated galaxies to gain insight into the possible UHECR sources. We find that 14 of the 21 correlated VCV galaxies are AGNs and we determine their bolometric luminosities. The remaining 7 are primarily star-forming galaxies. The bolometric luminosities of the correlated AGNs are all greater than 5 x 10^{42} erg/s, which may explain the absence of UHECRs from the Virgo region in spite of the large number of VCV galaxies in Virgo, since most of the VCV galaxies in the Virgo region are low luminosity AGNs. Interestingly, the bolometric luminosities of most of the AGNs are significantly lower than required to satisfy the minimum condition for UHECR acceleration in a continuous jet. If a UHECR-AGN correlation is substantiated with further statistics, our results lend support to the recently proposed ``giant AGN flare" mechanism for UHECR acceleration.

Maximum Likelihood Method for Cross Correlations with Astrophysical Sources

We generalize the Maximum Likelihood-type method used to study cross correlations between a catalog of candidate astrophysical sources and Ultrahigh Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECRs), to allow for differing source luminosities. The new method is applicable to any sparse data set such as UHE gamma rays or astrophysical neutrinos. Performance of the original and generalized techniques is evaluated in simulations of various scenarios. Applying the new technique to data, we find an excess correlation of about 9 events between HiRes UHECRs and known BLLacs, with a 6*10^-5 probability of such a correlation arising by chance.

Where do "red and dead" early-type void galaxies come from?

Void regions of the Universe offer a special environment for studying cosmology and galaxy formation, which may expose weaknesses in our understanding of these phenomena. Although galaxies in voids are observed to be predominately gas rich, star forming and blue, a sub-population of bright red void galaxies can also be found, whose star formation was shut down long ago. Are the same processes that quench star formation in denser regions of the Universe also at work in voids? We compare the luminosity function of void galaxies in the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey, to those from a galaxy formation model built on the Millennium Simulation. We show that a global star formation suppression mechanism in the form of low luminosity "radio mode" AGN heating is sufficient to reproduce the observed population of void early-types. Radio mode heating is environment independent other than its dependence on dark matter halo mass, where, above a critical mass threshold of approximately M_vir~10^12.5 M_sun, gas cooling onto the galaxy is suppressed and star formation subsequently fades. In the Millennium Simulation, the void halo mass function is shifted with respect to denser environments, but still maintains a high mass tail above this critical threshold. In such void halos, radio mode heating remains efficient and red galaxies are found; collectively these galaxies match the observed space density without any modification to the model. Consequently, galaxies living in vastly different large-scale environments but hosted by halos of similar mass are predicted to have similar properties, consistent with observations.

Strong CP Problem with 10^{32} Standard Model Copies

We show that a recently proposed solution to the Hierarchy Problem simultaneously solves the Strong CP Problem, without requiring an axion or any further new physics. Consistency of black hole physics implies a non-trivial relation between the number of particle species and particle masses, so that with ~10^{32} copies of the standard model, the TeV scale is naturally explained. At the same time, as shown here, this setup predicts a typical expected value of the strong-CP parameter in QCD of theta ~ 10^{-9}. This strongly motivates a more sensitive measurement of the neutron electric dipole moment.

Large-Angular-Scale Clustering as a Clue to the Source of UHECRs

We show that future Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Ray samples should be able to distinguish whether the sources of UHECRs are hosted by galaxy clusters or ordinary galaxies, or whether the sources are uncorrelated with the large-scale structure of the universe. Moreover, this is true independently of arrival direction uncertainty due to magnetic deflection or measurement error. The reason for this is the simple property that the strength of large-scale clustering for extragalactic sources depends on their mass, with more massive objects, such as galaxy clusters, clustering more strongly than lower mass objects, such as ordinary galaxies.

Maximum Likelihood method for ultrahigh energy cosmic ray cross correlations with astrophysical sources

We extend the Maximum Likelihood method used by HiRes to study cross correlations between a catalog of candidate astrophysical sources and Ultrahigh Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECRs), to allow for differing source luminosities. Our approach permits individual sources to be ranked according to their likelihood of having emitted the correlated UHECRs. We test both old and new method by simulations for various scenarios. We conclude that there are 9 true correlation between HiRes UHECRs and known BLLacs, with a 6*10^-5 probability of such a correlation arising by chance.

Large scale magnetic field of the Milky Way from WMAP3 data

We report on initial results from a project to constrain the large-scale and turbulent magnetic fields of the Milky Way galaxy, which eventually will incorporate all of the relevant observational data. In this paper we fit popular large scale magnetic field models to WMAP3 polarization maps. We find that the polarization data can constrain certain model parameters but does not uniquely determine the best-fit parameters. We also find that the polarization data alone cannot distinguish between model symmetries, e.g., the existence of field reversals. We show how future UHECR data can break this degeneracy.

Evidence that a cluster of UHECRs was produced by a burst or flare

The angular clustering of 5 Ultrahigh Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECRs) in the combined published AGASA-HiRes data has a probability of ~ 2 10^-3 of occurring by chance. A first analysis of the implications of the event energies and angular spreading is presented, which is applicable if the source is close enough that GZK losses can be ignored. Under this assumption, the observed energies of the events in this cluster favor a bursting rather than continuously emitting source, with the events emitted on a time scale short compared with 300 D_Mpc years. Assuming the UHECRs experience many incoherent small magnetic deflections enroute from source to Earth, the arrival direction distribution allows estimation that < B^2 lambda > D ~ 7.7 nG^2 Mpc^2, where lambda is the coherence length of the field and D is the source distance. If the spectrum at the source ~ E^{-2}, the total isotropic equivalent energy emitted in UHECRs is > 10^43 D_Mpc^3 ergs.

A New Force in the Dark Sector?

We study the kinematics of dark matter using the massive cluster of galaxies 1E0657-56. The velocity of the "bullet" subcluster has been measured by X-ray emission from the shock front, and the masses and separation of the main and sub-clusters have been measured by gravitational lensing. The velocity with gravity alone is calculated in a variety of models of the initial conditions, mass distribution and accretion history; it is much higher than expected, by at least 2.4 sigma. The probability of so large a subcluster velocity in cosmological simulations is <~ 10^{-7}. A long range force with strength ~ 0.4 - 1.2 times that of gravity would provide the needed additional acceleration.

Dark Matter and the Baryon Asymmetry

We present a mechanism to generate the baryon asymmetry of the Universe which preserves the net baryon number created in the Big Bang. If dark matter particles carry baryon number $B_X$, and $σ^{\rm annih}_{\bar{X}} < σ^{\rm annih}_{X} $, the $\bar{X}$'s freeze out at a higher temperature and have a larger relic density than $X$'s. If $m_X \lsi 4.5 B_X $GeV and the annihilation cross sections differ by $\mathcal{O}$(10%) or more, this type of scenario naturally explains the observed $Ω_{DM} \approx 5 Ω_b$. Two concrete examples are given, one of which can be excluded on observational grounds.

Flavor-singlet hybrid baryons may already have been discovered

The splittings between the spin 1/2 and spin 3/2 iso-singlet baryons Lambda_s(1405) and Lambda_s(1520), and their charmed counterparts Lambda_c(2593) and Lambda_c(2625), have been a theoretical conundrum. Here we investigate the possibility that the QCD binding of color octets comprised of three quarks in a flavor singlet configuration is stronger than previously envisaged, allowing these states to be interpreted as hybrids consisting of three quarks plus a valence gluon (udsg) and (udcg). A fit of their mass separation allows the mass prediction of the strange and charmed flavor octet and decuplet hybrid baryons and the prediction of the mass separation of the beauty hybrids. Such hybrid states come in parity-doubled pairs with the even parity state lighter by about 300 MeV. Existing data accommodates either parity assignment for the observed states and the existence of the required unobserved partners at either higher or lower mass. We discuss difficulties with and strategies for observing the other states under the two cases. A corollary of the strong-binding-in-flavor-singlet-channel hypothesis is that the H-dibaryon may be very long lived or stable with m_H ~< 2 GeV.

Foreground and Source of a Cluster of Ultra-high Energy Cosmic Rays

We investigate the origin of a nearly pointlike cluster of 5 ultrahigh energy cosmic rays at RA ~169.2deg and dec ~56.8deg, using Sloan Digital Sky Survey and other data. No particular source candidates are found near the estimated source direction, but the direction is exceptional in having a likely merging pair of galaxy clusters at 140/h Mpc, with an unusually low foreground density. Large scale shocks or another product of the merging galaxy clusters may accelerate the UHECRs, or the merging galaxy clusters may be coincidental and the UHECRs may be accelerated in a rare event of an unexceptional progenitor. Low magnetic deflections in the foreground void may explain why this is the only identified pointlike cluster of so many UHECRs.

A Window in the Dark Matter Exclusion Limits

We consider the cross section limits for light dark matter candidates ($m=0.4$ to 10 GeV). We calculate the interaction of dark matter in the crust above underground dark matter detectors and find that in the intermediate cross section range, the energy loss of dark matter is sufficient to fall below the energy threshold of current underground experiments. This implies the existence of a window in the dark matter exclusion limits in the micro-barn range.

Late Arriving Particles in Cosmic Ray Air Showers and AGASA's Determination of UHECR Energies

We give the first detailed study of the arrival time distribution of nucleons in UHECR air showers. We analyze in detail the influence of late arriving particles on the energy determination of the AGASA experiment, as well as how the arrival time distribution changes with distance from shower core. Our calculations are consistent with experimental observations of the AGASA group. Crucial to obtaining agreement, is the correct implementation of the energy loss for low-energy protons. We confirm AGASA's estimation of the error in their energy determination associated with late-arriving particles, assuming primary protons.

A Cluster of Ultrahigh Energy Cosmic Rays

Five ultrahigh energy cosmic rays in the combined AGASA and HiRes stereo data are analyzed to test whether they come from a single source. The quad above 37 EeV in the 94-event high energy dataset can be analyzed without considering magnetic dispersion. The probability that it is a chance association is 10^-3. Assuming the source is continuous, the random magnetic deflections these UHECRs accumulated en route from their source can be used to estimate \sqrt{B^2 λD} ~ 1 nG-Mpc. A quintuplet including a HiRes event between 10 and 30 EeV is well fit with this value. Galactic magnetic deflection appears to be smaller than in some models.

The 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey: luminosity functions by density environment and galaxy type

We use the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey to measure the dependence of the bJ-band galaxy luminosity function on large-scale environment, defined by density contrast in spheres of radius 8h-1Mpc, and on spectral type, determined from principal component analysis. We find that the galaxy populations at both extremes of density differ significantly from that at the mean density. The population in voids is dominated by late types and shows, relative to the mean, a deficit of galaxies that becomes increasingly pronounced at magnitudes brighter than M_bJ-5log10h <-18.5. In contrast, cluster regions have a relative excess of very bright early-type galaxies with M_bJ-5log10h < -21. Differences in the mid to faint-end population between environments are significant: at M_bJ-5log10h=-18 early and late-type cluster galaxies show comparable abundances, whereas in voids the late types dominate by almost an order of magnitude. We find that the luminosity functions measured in all density environments, from voids to clusters, can be approximated by Schechter functions with parameters that vary smoothly with local density, but in a fashion which differs strikingly for early and late-type galaxies. These observed variations, combined with our finding that the faint-end slope of the overall luminosity function depends at most weakly on density environment, may prove to be a significant challenge for models of galaxy formation.
