Limit-Cycles and Chaos in the Current Through a Quantum Dot

We investigate non-linear magneto-transport through a single level quantum dot coupled to ferromagnetic leads, where the electron spin is coupled to a large, external (pseudo)spin via an anisotropic exchange interaction. We find regimes where the average current through the dot displays self-sustained oscillations that reflect the limit-cycles and chaos and map the dependence of this behaviour on magnetic field strength and the tunnel coupling to the external leads.

Charge localization and dynamical spin locking in double quantum dots driven by ac magnetic fields

We investigate electron localization and dynamical spin locking induced by ac magnetic fields in double quantum dots. We demonstrate that by tuning the ac magnetic fields parameters, i.e., the field intensity, frequency, and the phase difference between the fields within each dot, coherent destruction of tunneling (and thus charge localization) can be achieved. We show that in contrast with ac electric fields, ac magnetic fields are able to induce spin locking, i.e., to freeze the electronic spin, at certain field parameters. We show how the symmetry of the Hamiltonian determines the quasienergy spectrum which presents degeneracies at certain field parameters, and how it is reflected in the charge and spin dynamics.

Microwave-induced resistance oscillations and zero-resistance states in 2D electron systems with two occupied subbands

We report on theoretical studies of recently discovered microwave-induced resistance oscillations and zero resistance states in Hall bars with two occupied subbands. In the same results, resistance presents a peculiar shape which appears to have a built-in interference effect not observed before. We apply the microwave-driven electron orbit model, which implies a radiation-driven oscillation of the two-dimensional electron system. Thus, we calculate different intra and inter-subband electron scattering rates and times that are revealing as different microwave-driven oscillations frequencies for the two electronic subbands. Through scattering, these subband-dependent oscillation motions interfere giving rise to a striking resistance profile. We also study the dependence of irradiated magnetoresistance with power and temperature. Calculated results are in good agreement with experiments.

Dynamical nuclear spin polarization induced by electronic current through double quantum dots

We analyze electron spin relaxation in electronic transport through coherently coupled double quantum dots in the spin blockade regime. In particular, we focus on hyperfine interaction as the spin relaxation mechanism. We pay special attention to the effect of the dynamical nuclear spin polarization induced by the electronic current on the nuclear environment. We discuss the behaviour of the electronic current and the induced nuclear spin polarization versus an external magnetic field for different hyperfine coupling intensities and interdot tunnelling strengths. We take into account, for each magnetic field, all hyperfine mediated spin relaxation processes coming from the different opposite spin levels approaches. We find that the current as a function of the external magnetic field shows a peak or a dip, and that the transition from a current dip to a current peak behaviour is obtained by decreasing the hyperfine coupling or by increasing the interdot tunnelling strength. We give a physical picture in terms of the interplay between the electrons tunnelling out of the double quantum dot and the spin flip processes due to the nuclear environment.

Phonon-mediated decoherence in triple quantum dot interferometers

We investigate decoherence in a triple quantum dot in ring configuration in which one dot is coupled to a damped phonon mode, while the other two dots are connected to source and drain, respectively. In the absence of decoherence, single electron transport may get blocked by an electron falling into a superposition decoupled from the drain and known as dark state. Phonon-mediated decoherence affects this superposition and leads to a finite current. We study the current and its shot noise numerically within a master equation approach for the electrons and the dissipative phonon mode. A polaron transformation allows us to obtain a reduced equation for only the dot electrons which provides analytical results in agreement with numerical ones.

Spin-polarized currents in double and triple quantum dots driven by ac magnetic fields

We analyze transport through both a double quantum dot and a triple quantum dot with inhomogeneous Zeeman splittings in the presence of crossed dc and ac magnetic fields. We find that strongly spin-polarized current can be achieved by tuning the relative energies of the Zeeman-split levels of the dots, by means of electric gate voltages: depending on the energy level detuning, the double quantum dot works either as spin-up or spin-down filter. We show that a triple quantum dot in series under crossed dc and ac magnetic fields can act not only as spin-filter but also as spin-inverter.

Electron bunching in triple quantum dot interferometers

We study electron transport through a triple quantum dot in ring configuration at finite bias. In particular, we analyze the influence of a gate voltage that detunes one of the dots, such that one branch of the interferometer becomes off-resonant. It turns out that then interference effects fade away, i.e., the current becomes independent of a penetrating flux and the detuning. The noise properties which are characterized by the full-counting statistics, however, are governed by bunching effects that may be tuned by the gate voltage. Analytical results for limiting cases support this picture. A possible application is the construction of current sources with widely tunable shot noise properties.

Control of Spin Blockade by AC Magnetic Fields in Triple Quantum Dots

We analyze coherent spin phenomena in triple quantum dots in triangular configuration under crossed DC and AC magnetic fields. In particular, we discuss the interplay between Aharonov-Bohm current oscillations, coherent electron trapping and spin blockade under electron spin resonance conditions. We demonstrate that, for certain field frequencies, AC magnetic fields induce an antiresonant behavior in the current, allowing for both removal and restoration of entangled spin blockaded states by tuning the AC field frequency. Our theoretical predictions indicate how to manipulate spin qubits in a triangular quantum dot array.

Determining the electronic triplet-singlet transition probability in double quantum dots: Analogy with the double slit experiment

We apply an elementary measurement scheme to calculate the electronic triplet-singlet transition mediated by hyperfine interaction in a double quantum dot. We show how the local character of the hyperfine interaction and the nuclear back-action process (flip-flop) are crucial to cancel destructive interferences of the triplet-singlet transition probability. It is precisely this cancellation which differentiates the hyperfine interaction from an anisotropic magnetic field which mixes the triplet and the singlet eigenstates.

Transport properties of a molecule embedded in an Aharonov-Bohm interferometer

We theoretically investigate the transport properties of a molecule embedded in one arm of a mesoscopic Aharonov-Bohm interferometer. Due to the presence of phonons the molecule level position ($ε_d$) and the electron-electron interaction ($U$) undergo a \emph{polaronic shift} which affects dramatically the electronic transport through the molecular junction. When the electron-phonon interaction is weak the linear conductance presents Fano-line shapes as long as the direct channel between the electrodes is opened. The observed Fano resonances in the linear conductance are originated from the interference between the spin Kondo state and the direct path. For strong enough electron-phonon interaction, the electron-electron interaction is renormalized towards negative values, {\it i.e.} becomes effectively attractive. This scenario favors fluctuations between the empty and doubly occupied charge states and therefore promotes a charge Kondo effect. However, the direct path between the contacts breaks the electron-hole symmetry which can efficiently suppress this charge Kondo effect. Nevertheless, we show that a proper tuning of the gate voltage is able to revive the Kondo resonance. Our results are obtained by using the Numerical Renormalization approximation to compute the electronic spectral function and the linear conductance.

Spin correlations in spin blockade

We investigate spin currents and spin-current correlations for double quantum dots in the spin blockade regime. By analysing the time evolution of the density matrix, we obtain the spin resolved currents and derive from a generating function an expression for the fluctuations and correlations. Both the charge current and the spin current turn out to be generally super-Poissonian. Moreover, we study the influence of ac fields acting upon the transported electrons. In particular, we focus on fields that cause spin rotation or photon-assisted tunnelling.

Resonance fluorescence in driven quantum dots: electron and photon correlations

We study the counting statistics for electrons and photons being emitted from a driven two level quantum dot. Our technique allows us to calculate their mutual correlations as well. We study different transport configurations by tuning the chemical potential of one of the leads to find that the electronic and photonic fluctuations can be externally manipulated by tuning the AC and transport parameters. We also propose special configurations where electron-photon correlation is maximal meaning that spontaneous emission of photons with a well defined energy is regulated by single electron tunneling. Interesting features are also obtained for energy dependent tunneling.

Driving Weiss oscillations to Zero Resistance States by Microwave Radiation

In this work we present a theoretical model to study the effect of microwave radiation on Weiss oscillations. In our proposal Weiss oscillations, produced by an spatial periodic potential, are modulated by microwave radiation due to an interference effect between both, space and time-dependent, potentials. The final magnetoresistance depends mainly on the spatial period of the spatial potential and the frequency of radiation. Depending on the values of these parameters, we predict that Weiss oscillations can reach zero resistance states. On the other hand, these dissipationless transport states, created just by radiation, can be destroyed by the additional presence of a periodic space-dependent potential. Then by tuning the spatial period or the radiation frequency, the magnetoresistance can be strongly modified.

Coherent spin rotations in open driven double quantum dots

We analyze the charge and spin dynamics in a DC biased double quantum dot driven by crossed DC and AC magnetic fields. In this configuration, spatial delocalization due to inter-dot tunnel competes with intra-dot spin rotations induced by the time dependent magnetic field, giving rise to a complicated time dependent behavior of the tunnelling current. When the Zeeman splitting has the same value in both dots and spin flip is negligible, the electrons remain in the triplet subspace (dark subspace) performing coherent spin rotations and the current does not flow. This electronic trapping is removed either by finite spin relaxation or when the Zeeman splitting is different in each quantum dot. In the first case, our results show that measuring the current will allow to get information on the spin relaxation time. In the last case, we will show that applying a resonant bichromatic magnetic field, the electrons become trapped in a coherent superposition of states and electronic transport is blocked. Then, manipulating AC magnetic fields, electrons are driven to perform coherent spin rotations which can be unambiguously detected by direct measurement of the tunneling current.

Electron Bunching in Stacks of Coupled Quantum Dots

We study the transport properties of two double quantum dots in a parallel arrangement at temperatures of a few Kelvin. Thereby, we show that decoherence entailed by the substrate phonons affects the shot noise. For asymmetric coupling between the dots and the respective lead, the current noise is sub-Poissonian for resonant tunneling, but super-Poissonian in the vicinity of the resonances. Our results indicate that phonon emission and absorption is responsible for the shot noise enhancement. The observed asymmetry of the peaks at low temperatures stems from spontaneous emission.

Electronic transport through a double quantum dot in the spin blockade regime: Theoretical models

We analyzed the electronic transport through a double quantum dot in the spin blockade regime. Experiments of current rectification by Pauli exclusion principle in double quantum dots were discussed. The electron and nuclei spin dynamics and their interplay due to the Hyperfine interaction were self-consistently analyzed within the framework of rate equations. Our results show that the current leakage experimentally observed in the spin-blockade region, is due to spin-flip processes induced by Hyperfine interaction through Overhauser effect. We show as well how a magnetic field applied parallel to the current allows excited states to participate in the electronic current and removes spin blockade. Our model includes also a self-consistent description of inelastic transitions where the energy is exchanged through interactions with acoustic phonons in the environment. It accounts for spontaneous emission of phonons which results in additional features in the current characteristics. We develop a microscopical model to treat the Hyperfine interaction in each dot. Using this model we study the dynamical nuclear polarization as a function of the applied voltage.

Resonance Fluorescence in Transport through Quantum Dots: Noise Properties

We study a two-level quantum dot embedded in a phonon bath and irradiated by a time-dependent ac field and develope a method that allows us to extract simultaneously the full counting statistics of the electronic tunneling and relaxation (by phononic emission) events as well as their correlation. We find that the quantum noise of both the transmitted electrons and the emitted phonons can be controlled by the manipulation of external parameters such as the driving field intensity or the bias voltage.

Polarization immunity of magnetoresistivity response under Microwave excitation

We analyze theoretically the dependence of the microwave polarization sate and sense on the magnetoresistivity response of two-dimensional electron systems. Linear and circular polarization have been considered with different senses and directions. We discuss the polarization dependence of the longitudinal magnetoresistivity and propose an explanation for the experimentally observed polarization immunity, i.e., resistivity oscillations and zero resistance state regions are unaffected by the sense of circular polarization or by the direction of microwave electric field.
