A family of multipartite separability criteria based on correlation tensor

A family of separability criteria based on correlation matrix (tensor) is provided. Interestingly, it unifies several criteria known before like e.g. CCNR or realignment criterion, de Vicente criterion and derived recently separability criterion based on SIC POVMs. It should be stressed that, unlike the well known Correlation Matrix Criterion or criterion based on Local Uncertainty Relations, the new criteria are linear in the density operator and hence one may find new classes of entanglement witnesses and positive maps. Interestingly, there is a natural generalization to multipartite scenario using multipartite correlation matrix. We illustrate the detection power of the above criteria on several well known examples of quantum states.

Bounds on bipartite entanglement from fixed marginals

We discuss the problem of characterizing upper bounds on entanglement in a bipartite quantum system when only the reduced density matrices (marginals) are known. In particular, starting from the known two-qubit case, we propose a family of candidates for maximally entangled mixed states with respect to fixed marginals for two qudits. Interestingly, it turns out such states are always quasidistillable. Moreover, they are extremal in the convex set of two qudit states with fixed marginals. Our observations are supported by numerical analysis.

Quantum trajectories for a system interacting with environment in N-photon state

We derive stochastic master equation for a quantum system interacting with an environment prepared in a continuous-mode $N$-photon state. To determine the conditional evolution of the quantum system depending on continuous in time measurements of the output field the model of repeated interactions and measurements is applied. The environment is defined as an infinite chain of harmonic oscillators which do not interact between themselves and they are prepared initially in an entangled state being a discrete analogue of a continuous-mode $N$-photon state. We provide not only the quantum trajectories but also the analytical formulae for the whole statistics of the output photons and the solution to the master equation. The solution in the continuous case is represented by a simple diagrammatic technique with very transparent "Feynmann rules". This technique considerably simplifies the structure of the solution and enables one to find physical interpretation for the solution in terms of a few elementary processes.

Entanglement witnesses from mutually unbiased bases

We provide a class of entanglement witnesses constructed in terms of Mutually Unbiased Bases (MUBs). This construction reproduces many well-known examples like the celebrated reduction map and Choi map together with its generalizations. We illustrated our construction by the detailed analysis of the 3-dimensional case: in this case, one obtains a family of entanglement witnesses parameterized by an L-dimensional torus (L = 2,3,4 being a number of MUBs used in the construction).

On Bipartite Operators Defined by Completely Different Permutations

We introduce a class of bipartite operators acting on $\mathcal{H} \otimes \mathcal{H}$ ($\mathcal{H}$ being an $n$-dimensional Hilbert space) defined by a set of $n$ Completely Different Permutations CDP. Bipartite operators are of particular importance in quantum information theory to represent states and observables of composite quantum systems. It turns out that any set of CDPs gives rise to a certain direct sum decomposition of the total Hilbert space which enables one simple construction of the corresponding bipartite operator. Interestingly, if set of CDPs defines an abelian group then the corresponding bipartite operator displays an additional property -- the partially transposed operator again corresponds to (in general different) set of CDPs. Therefore, our technique may be used to construct new classes of so called PPT states which are of great importance for quantum information. Using well known relation between bipartite operators and linear maps one use also construct linear maps related to CDPs.

Quantum trajectories for a system interacting with environment in a single photon state: counting and diffusive processes

We derived quantum trajectories for a system interacting with the environment prepared in a continuous mode single photon state as the limit of discrete filtering model with an environment defined as series of independent qubits prepared initially in the entangled state being an analogue of a continuous mode state. The environment qubits interact with the quantum system and they are subsequently measured. The initial correlation between the bath qubits is the source of the non-Markovianity. The conditional evolutions of the quantum system for limit of the continuous in time observations together with the formulas for the photon counting probabilities are given.

Fidelity of dynamical maps

We introduce the concept of fidelity for dynamical maps in an open quantum system scenario. We derive an inequality linking this quantity to the distinguishability of the inducing environmental states. Our inequality imposes constraints on the allowed set of dynamical maps arising from the microscopic description of system plus environment. Remarkably, the inequality involves only the states of the environment and the dynamical map of the open system and, therefore, does not rely on the knowledge of either the microscopic interaction Hamiltonian or the environmental Hamiltonian characteristic parameters. We demonstrate the power of our result by applying it to two different scenarios: quantum programming and quantum probing. In the first case we use it to derive bounds on the dimension of the processor for approximate programming of unitaries. In the second case we present an intriguing proof-of-principle demonstration of the ability to extract information on the environment via a quantum probe without any a priori assumption on the form of the system-environment coupling Hamiltonian.

Generalising Wigner's theorem

We analyse linear maps of operator algebras $\mathcal{B}_H(\mathcal{H})$ mapping the set of rank-$k$ projectors onto the set of rank-$l$ projectors surjectively. We give a complete characterisation of such maps for prime $n = \dim\mathcal{H}$. The solution is known for $k=l=1$ as the Wigner's theorem.

A class of bistochastic positive optimal maps in $M_d(\mathbb{C})$

We provide a straightforward generalization of a positive map in $M_3(\mathbb{C})$ considered recently by Miller and Olkiewicz \cite{Miller}. It is proved that these maps are optimal and indecomposable. As a byproduct we provide a class of PPT entangled states in $d \otimes d$.

On admissible memory kernels for random unitary qubit evolution

We analyze random unitary evolution of the qubit within memory kernel approach. We provide sufficient conditions which guarantee that the corresponding memory kernel generates physically legitimate quantum evolution. Interestingly, we are able to recover several well known examples and generate new classes of nontrivial qubit evolution. Surprisingly, it turns out that quantum evolution with memory kernel generated by our approach gives rise to vanishing non-Markovianity measure based on the distinguishability of quantum states.

Entanglement witnesses: construction, analysis and classification

From the physical point of view entanglement witnesses define a universal tool for analysis and classification of quantum entangled states. From the mathematical point of view they provide highly nontrivial generalization of positive operators and they find elegant correspondence with the theory of positive maps in matrix algebras. We concentrate on theoretical analysis of various important notions like (in)decomposability, atomicity, optimality, extremality and exposedness. Several methods of construction are provided as well. Our discussion is illustrated by many examples enabling the reader to see the intricate structure of these objects. It is shown that the theory of entanglement witnesses finds elegant geometric formulation in terms of convex cones and related geometric structures.

A class of exposed indecomposable positive maps

Exposed positive maps in matrix algebras define a dense subset of extremal maps. We provide a class of indecomposable positive maps in the algebra of 2n x 2n complex matrices with n>1. It is shown that these maps are exposed and hence define the strongest tool in entanglement theory to discriminate between separable and entangled states.

Dissecting the qutrit

To visualize a higher dimensional object it is convenient to consider its two-dimensional cross-sections. The set of quantum states for a three level system has eight dimensions. We supplement a recent paper by Goyal et al by considering the set of all possible two-dimensional cross-sections of the qutrit. Each such cross-section is bounded by a plane cubic curve.

Exposed positive maps: a sufficient condition

Exposed positive maps in matrix algebras define a dense subset of extremal maps. We provide a sufficient condition for a positive map to be exposed. This is an analog of a spanning property which guaranties that a positive map is optimal. We analyze a class of decomposable maps for which this condition is also necessary.

Optimal decomposable witnesses without the spanning property

One of the unsolved problems in the characterization of the optimal entanglement witnesses is the existence of optimal witnesses acting on bipartite Hilbert spaces H_{m,n}=C^m\otimes C^n such that the product vectors obeying =0 do not span H_{m,n}. So far, the only known examples of such witnesses were found among indecomposable witnesses, one of them being the witness corresponding to the Choi map. However, it remains an open question whether decomposable witnesses exist without the property of spanning. Here we answer this question affirmatively, providing systematic examples of such witnesses. Then, we generalize some of the recently obtained results on the characterization of 2\otimes n optimal decomposable witnesses [R. Augusiak et al., J. Phys. A 44, 212001 (2011)] to finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces H_{m,n} with m,n\geq 3.
