Investigating the temperature dependence of the specific shear viscosity of QCD matter with dilepton radiation

This work reports on investigations of the effects on the evolution of viscous hydrodynamics and on the flow coefficients of thermal dileptons, originating from a temperature-dependent specific shear viscosity $η/s (T)$ at temperatures beyond 180 MeV formed at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC). We show that the elliptic flow of thermal dileptons can resolve the magnitude of $η/s$ at the high temperatures, where partonic degrees of freedom become relevant, whereas discriminating between different specific functional forms will likely not be possible at RHIC using this observable.

Thermalization & hydrodynamics in Bjorken & Gubser flows

The dynamical scaling behavior of hydrodynamic and non-hydrodynamic moments of the distribution function is studied using third-order Chapman-Enskog hydrodynamics and anisotropic hydrodynamics for systems undergoing Bjorken and Gubser expansions, where exact solutions of the Boltzmann equation in Relaxation Time Approximation (RTA) are available for comparison. While dimensionless quantities like normalized shear, pressure anisotropy and normalized entropy show at late times universal scaling relations with small (large) Knudsen number for Bjorken (Gubser) flows, dimensionful quantities like the entropy per unit rapidity do not. Although the two hydrodynamic approximation schemes describe the exact attractors for normalized shear with high accuracy, their description for the normalized entropy is less precise. We attribute this to non-negligible couplings to non-hydrodynamic modes in the entropy evolution.

On higher order and anisotropic hydrodynamics for Bjorken and Gubser flows

We study the evolution of hydrodynamic and non-hydrodynamic moments of the distribution function using anisotropic and third-order Chapman-Enskog hydrodynamics for systems undergoing Bjorken and Gubser flows. The hydrodynamic results are compared with the exact solution of the Boltzmann equation with a collision term in relaxation time approximation. While the evolution of the hydrodynamic moments of the distribution function (i.e. of the energy momentum tensor) can be described with high accuracy by both hydrodynamic approximation schemes, their description of the evolution of the entropy of the system is much less precise. We attribute this to large contributions from non-hydrodynamic modes coupling into the entropy evolution which are not well captured by the hydrodynamic approximations. The differences between the exact solution and the hydrodynamic approximations are larger for the third-order Chapman-Enskog hydrodynamics than for anisotropic hydrodynamics, which effectively resums some of the dissipative effects from anisotropic expansion to all orders in the anisotropy, and are larger for Gubser flow than for Bjorken flow. Overall, anisotropic hydrodynamics provides the most precise macroscopic description for these highly anisotropically expanding systems.

Bulk viscous effects on flow and dilepton radiation in a hybrid approach

Starting from IP-Glasma initial conditions, we investigate the effects of bulk pressure on low mass dilepton production at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) energies. Though thermal dilepton $v_2$ is affected by the presence of both bulk and shear viscosity, whether or not these effects can be measured depends on the dilepton "cocktail" contribution to the the low mass dilepton $v_2$. Combining the thermal and "cocktail" dileptons, the effects of bulk viscosity on total dilepton $v_2$ is investigated.

Multistage Monte-Carlo simulation of jet modification in a static medium

The modification of hard jets in an extended static medium held at a fixed temperature is studied using three different Monte-Carlo event generators (LBT, MATTER, MARTINI). Each event generator contains a different set of assumptions regarding the energy and virtuality of the partons within a jet versus the energy scale of the medium, and hence, applies to a different epoch in the space-time history of the jet evolution. For the first time, modeling is developed where a jet may sequentially transition from one generator to the next, on a parton-by-parton level, providing a detailed simulation of the space-time evolution of medium modified jets over a much broader dynamic range than has been attempted previously in a single calculation. Comparisons are carried out for different observables sensitive to jet quenching, including the parton fragmentation function and the azimuthal distribution of jet energy around the jet axis. The effect of varying the boundary between different generators is studied and a theoretically motivated criterion for the location of this boundary is proposed. The importance of such an approach with coupled generators to the modeling of jet quenching is discussed.

Dilepton radiation and bulk viscosity in heavy-ion collisions

Starting from IP-Glasma initial conditions, we investigate the effects of bulk pressure on thermal dilepton production at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) energies. Though results of the thermal dilepton $v_2$ under the influence of both bulk and shear viscosity is presented for top RHIC energy, more emphasis is put on LHC energy where such a calculation is computed for the first time. The effects of the bulk pressure on thermal dilepton $v_2$ at the LHC are explored through bulk-induced modifications on the dilepton yield.

Electromagnetic radiation as a probe of the initial state and of viscous dynamics in relativistic nuclear collisions

The penetrating nature of electromagnetic signals makes them suitable probes to explore the properties of the strongly-interacting medium created in relativistic nuclear collisions. We examine the effects of the initial conditions and shear relaxation time on the spectra and flow coefficients of electromagnetic probes, using an event-by-event 3+1D viscous hydrodynamic simulation (MUSIC).

Dilepton emission in high-energy heavy-ion collisions with dissipative hydrodynamics

In this contribution we study the effects of three transport coefficients of dissipative hydrodynamics on thermal dilepton anisotropic flow observables. The first two transport coefficients investigated influence the overall size and growth rate of shear viscous pressure, while the last transport coefficient governs the magnitude of net baryon number diffusion in relativistic dissipative fluid dynamics. All calculations are done using state-of-the-art 3+1D hydrodynamical simulations. We show that thermal dileptons are sensitive probes of the transport coefficients of dissipative hydrodynamics.

Probing the dissipative properties of a strongly interacting medium with dileptons

We investigate the effects of the presence of a non-vanishing net baryon number density and its diffusion on dilepton production, within a hydrodynamical description of the medium created at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=7.7$ GeV collision energy. This energy value is explored within the Beam Energy Scan (BES) program at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Particular attention is devoted to a new dissipative degree of freedom: the net baryon number diffusion ($V^μ$), and to the net baryon number conductivity ($κ$) | a transport coefficients governing the overall magnitude of $V^μ$. The effects of $κ$ on dilepton production are assessed, with an outlook on how future experimental dilepton data can be used to learn more about $κ$.

Probing the non-equilibrium dynamics of hot and dense QCD with dileptons

It is argued that, in heavy ion collisions, thermal dileptons are good probes of the transport properties of the medium created in such events, and also of its early-time dynamics, usually inaccessible to hadronic observables. In this work we show that electromagnetic azimuthal momentum anisotropies do not only display a sensitivity to the shear relaxation time and to the initial shear-stress tensor profile, but also to the temperature dependence of the shear viscosity coefficient.

Probing the early-time dynamics of relativistic heavy-ion collisions with electromagnetic radiation

Using 3+1D viscous relativistic fluid dynamics, we show that electromagnetic probes are sensitive to the initial conditions and to the out-of-equilibrium features of relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Within the same approach, we find that hadronic observables show a much lesser sensitivity to these aspects. We conclude that electromagnetic observables allow access to dynamical regions that are beyond the reach of soft hadronic probes.

Dilepton emission in high-energy heavy-ion collisions with viscous hydrodynamics

The invariant mass spectrum and the elliptic flow of lepton pairs produced in relativistic heavy-ion collisions at RHIC are studied with viscous hydrodynamics. The effects of viscous corrections on dilepton observables are explored. The lepton pairs originating from charm quarks evolving in the viscous background are seen to be a good probe of quark energy loss and gain, as quantified by the dilepton spectrum and by the dilepton elliptic flow.
