Location-Aware Language Models via Secondary Embeddings

Pretrained transformer-based language models achieve strong performance across a wide range of NLP tasks but remain limited in encoding geo-locational semantics, leading to suboptimal representations of place names and spatial entities. In this work, we propose a lightweight, model-agnostic approach for injecting geo-spatial awareness into pretrained embeddings without modifying the tokenizer or requiring costly retraining. Our method augments input representations with structured geographic signals by combining location names with their corresponding latitude and longitude, and employs a location-focused masking to better align textual representations with real-world spatial relationships. This design allows the model to incorporate geo-spatial context while preserving existing semantic and syntactic knowledge. Experimental results demonstrate substantial improvements in geo-spatial alignment while maintaining comparable performance on standard NLP benchmarks such as GLUE. The method is computationally efficient, requiring only minutes of additional training, and generalizes across multiple model architectures and scales.

Entropy-aware Masking for Masked Language Modeling

Masked language modeling has become a standard pretraining objective for training encoder-based language models. In this approach, certain tokens in the input are masked, and the model learns to predict them using the surrounding context. This process enables the model to capture both syntactic and semantic properties of language. Conventionally, the tokens selected for masking are chosen at random, which may not always yield the most effective learning signals. In this work, we examine a token masking strategy based on entropy distribution. We use the model's entropy over token predictions to identify which tokens should be masked. This method aims to target tokens that are more informative and uncertain to improve the training efficacy. We also propose a novel self-masking approach that enhances training efficiency without relying on an external reference model. Experimental results demonstrate that our method achieves an average performance improvement of 5% in GLUE scores compared to the baseline. Further, we experiment with combining knowledge distillation with entropy masking, resulting in the best overall results.

Compression of end-to-end non-autoregressive image-to-speech system for low-resourced devices

People with visual impairments have difficulty accessing touchscreen-enabled personal computing devices like mobile phones and laptops. The image-to-speech (ITS) systems can assist them in mitigating this problem, but their huge model size makes it extremely hard to be deployed on low-resourced embedded devices. In this paper, we aim to overcome this challenge by developing an efficient endto-end neural architecture for generating audio from tiny segments of display content on low-resource devices. We introduced a vision transformers-based image encoder and utilized knowledge distillation to compress the model from 6.1 million to 2.46 million parameters. Human and automatic evaluation results show that our approach leads to a very minimal drop in performance and can speed up the inference time by 22%.
