Noncommutative mixed (Artin) motives and their motivic Hopf dg algebras

We start by developing a theory of noncommutative (=NC) mixed motives with coefficients in any commutative ring. In particular, we construct a symmetric monoidal triangulated category of NC mixed motives, over a base field k, and a full subcategory of NC mixed Artin motives. Making use of Hochschild homology, we then apply Ayoub's weak Tannakian formalism to these motivic categories. In the case of NC mixed motives, we obtain a motivic Hopf dg algebra, which we describe explicitly in terms of Hochschild homology and complexes of exact cubes. In the case of NC mixed Artin motives, we compute the associated Hopf dg algebra using solely the classical category of mixed Artin-Tate motives. Finally, we establish a short exact sequence relating the Hopf algebra of continuous functions on the absolute Galois group with the motivic Hopf dg algebras of the base field k and of its algebraic closure. Along the way, we describe the behavior of Ayoub's weak Tannakian formalism with respect to orbit categories and relate the category of NC mixed motives with Voevodsky's category of mixed motives.

Noncommutative motives of separable algebras

In this article we study in detail the category of noncommutative motives of separable algebras Sep(k) over a base field k. We start by constructing four different models of the full subcategory of commutative separable algebras CSep(k). Making use of these models, we then explain how the category Sep(k) can be described as a "fibered Z-order" over CSep(k). This viewpoint leads to several computations and structural properties of the category Sep(k). For example, we obtain a complete dictionary between directs sums of noncommutative motives of central simple algebras (=CSA) and sequences of elements in the Brauer group of k. As a first application, we establish two families of motivic relations between CSA which hold for every additive invariant (e.g. algebraic K-theory, cyclic homology, and topological Hochschild homology). As a second application, we compute the additive invariants of twisted flag varieties using solely the Brauer classes of the corresponding CSA. Along the way, we categorify the cyclic sieving phenomenon and compute the (rational) noncommutative motives of purely inseparable field extensions and of dg Azumaya algebras.

Voevodsky's mixed motives versus Kontsevich's noncommutative mixed motives

Following an insight of Kontsevich, we prove that the quotient of Voevodsky's category of geometric mixed motives DM by the endofunctor -Q(1)[2] embeds fully-faithfully into Kontsevich's category of noncommutative mixed motives KMM. We show also that this embedding is compatible with the one between pure motives. As an application, we obtain a precise relation between the Picard groups Pic(-), the Grothendieck groups, the Schur-finitenss, and the Kimura-finitenss of the categories DM and KMM. In particular, the quotient of Pic(DM) by the subgroup of Tate twists Q(i)[2i] injects into Pic(KMM). Along the way, we relate KMM with Morel-Voevodsky's stable A1-homotopy category, recover the twisted algebraic K-theory of Kahn-Levine from KMM, and extend Elmendorf-Mandell's foundational work on multicategories to a broader setting.

Exponentiation of motivic measures

In this short note we establish some properties of all those motivic measures which can be exponentiated. As a first application, we show that the rationality of Kapranov's zeta function is stable under products. As a second application, we give an elementary proof of a result of Totaro.

Bost-Connes systems, Categorification, Quantum statistical mechanics, and Weil numbers

In this article we develop a broad generalization of the classical Bost-Connes system, where roots of unit are replaced by an algebraic datum consisting of an abelian group and a semi-group of endomorphisms. Examples include roots of unit, Weil restriction, algebraic numbers, Weil numbers, CM fields, germs, completion of Weil numbers, etc. Making use of the Tannakian formalism, we categorify these algebraic data. For example, the categorification of roots of unit is given by a limit of orbit categories of Tate motives while the categorification of Weil numbers is given by Grothendieck's category of numerical motives over a finite field. To some of these algebraic data (roots of unity, algebraic numbers, Weil numbers, etc), we associate also a quantum statistical mechanical system with several remarkable properties, which generalize those of the classical Bost-Connes system. The associated partition function, low temperature Gibbs states, and Galois action on zero-temperature states are then studied in detail. For example, we show that in the particular case of the Weil numbers the partition function and the low temperature Gibbs states can be described as series of polylogarithms.

Some remarks concerning Voevodsky's nilpotence conjecture

In this note we extend Voevodsky's nilpotence conjecture from smooth projective schemes to the broader setting of smooth proper dg categories. Making use of this noncommutative generalization, we then address Voevodsky's original conjecture in the following cases: quadric fibrations, intersection of quadrics, linear sections of Grassmannians, linear sections of determinantal varieties, homological projective duals, and Moishezon manifolds.

From semi-orthogonal decompositions to polarized intermediate Jacobians via Jacobians of noncommutative motives

Let X and Y be complex smooth projective varieties, and D^b(X) and D^b(Y) the associated bounded derived categories of coherent sheaves. Assume the existence of a triangulated category T which is admissible both in D^b(X) as in D^b(Y). Making use of the recent theory of Jacobians of noncommutative motives, we construct out of this categorical data a morphism t of abelian varieties (up to isogeny) from the product of the intermediate algebraic Jacobians of X to the product of the intermediate algebraic Jacobians of Y. When the orthogonal complement of T in D^b(X) has a trivial Jacobian (e.g. when it is generated by exceptional objects), the morphism t is split injective. When this also holds for the orthogonal complement of T in D^b(Y), t becomes an isomorphism. Furthermore, in the case where X and Y have a single intermediate algebraic Jacobian carrying a principal polarization, we prove that the morphism t preserves this extra structure. As an application, we obtain categorical Torelli theorems, an incompatibility between two conjectures of Kuznetsov (one concerning Fourier-Mukai functors and another one concerning Fano threefolds), a new proof of a classical theorem of Clemens-Griffiths on blow-ups of threefolds, and several new results on quadric fibrations and intersection of quadrics.

A1-homotopy theory of noncommutative motives

In this article we continue the development of a theory of noncommutative motives. We construct categories of A1-homotopy noncommutative motives, described their universal properties, and compute their spectra of morphisms in terms of Karoubi-Villamayor's K-theory (KV) and Weibel's homotopy K-theory (KH). As an application, we obtain a complete classification of all the natural transformations defined on KV, KH. This leads to a streamlined construction of Weibel's homotopy Chern character from KV to periodic cyclic homology. Along the way we extend Dwyer-Friedlander's etale K-theory to the noncommutative world, and develop the universal procedure of forcing a functor to preserve filtered homotopy colimits.

Noncommutative motives and their applications

This survey is based on lectures given by the authors during the program "Noncommutative algebraic geometry and representation theory" at the MSRI, Berkeley, in the spring of 2013. It covers the recent work of the authors on noncommutative motives and their applications, and is intended for a broad mathematical audience.

E_n-regularity implies E_(n-1)-regularity

Vorst and latter Dayton-Weibel proved that K_n-regularity implies K_(n-1)-regularity. In this note we generalize this result from (commutative) rings to differential graded categories and from algebraic K-theory to any functor which is Morita invariant, continuous, and localizing. Moreover, we show that regularity is preserved under taking desuspensions, fibers of morphisms, direct factors, and arbitrary direct sums. As an application, we prove that the above implication also holds for schemes. Along the way, we extend Bass' fundamental theorem to this broader setting and prove a Nisnevich descent result which is of independent interest

Noncommutative Artin motives

In this article we introduce the categories of noncommutative (mixed) Artin motives. In the pure world, we start by proving that the classical category AM(k) of Artin motives (over a base field k) can be characterized as the largest category inside Chow motives which fully-embeds into noncommutative Chow motives. Making use of a refined bridge between pure motives and noncommutative pure motives we then show that the image of this full embedding, which we call the category NAM(k) of noncommutative Artin motives, is invariant under the different equivalence relations and modification of the symmetry isomorphism constraints. As an application, we recover the absolute Galois group of k from the Tannakian formalism applied to NAM(k). Then, we develop the theory of base-change in the world of noncommutative pure motives. As an application, we obtain new tools for the study of motivic decompositions and Schur/Kimura finiteness. Making use of this theory of base-change we construct a short exact sequence relating the absolute Galois group of k with the noncommutative motivic Galois groups of k and of its algebraic closure. Finally, we describe a precise relationship between this short exact sequence and the one constructed by Deligne-Milne. In the mixed world, we introduce the triangulated category NMAM(k) of noncommutative mixed Artin motives and construct a faithful functor from the classical category MAM(k) of mixed Artin motives to it. When k is a finite field this functor is an equivalent. On the other hand, when k is of characteristic zero NMAM(k) is much richer than MAM(k) since its higher Ext-groups encode all the (rationalized) higher algebraic K-theory of finite etale k-schemes. In the appendix we establish a general result about short exact sequences of Galois groups which is of independent interest. As an application, we obtain a new proof of Deligne-Milne's short exact sequence.

Galois descent of additive invariants

Making use of the recent theory of noncommutative motives, we prove that every additive invariant satisfies Galois descent. Examples include mixed complexes, Hochschild homology, cyclic homology, periodic cyclic homology, negative cyclic homology, connective algebraic K-theory, mod-l algebraic K-theory, nonconnective algebraic K-theory, homotopy K-theory, topological Hochschild homology, and topological cyclic homology.

Additive invariants of toric and twisted projective homogeneous varieties via noncommutative motives

I. Panin proved in the nineties that the algebraic K-theory of twisted projective homogeneous varieties can be expressed in terms of central simple algebras. Later, Merkurjev and Panin described the algebraic K-theory of toric varieties as a direct summand of the algebraic K-theory of separable algebras. In this article, making use of the recent theory of noncommutative motives, we extend Panin and Merkurjev-Panin computations from algebraic K-theory to every additive invariant. As a first application, we fully compute the cyclic homology (and all its variants) of twisted projective homogeneous varieties. As a second application, we show that the noncommutative motive of a twisted projective homogeneous variety is trivial if and only if the Brauer classes of the associated central simple algebras are trivial. Along the way we construct a fully-faithful tensor functor from Merkurjev-Panin's motivic category to Kontsevich's category of noncommutative Chow motives, which is of independent interest.

Noncommutative motives of Azumaya algebras

Let k be a base commutative ring, R a commutative ring of coefficients, X a quasi-compact quasi-separated k-scheme, A a sheaf of Azumaya algebras over X of rank r, and Hmo(R) the category of noncommutative motives with R-coefficients. Assume that 1/r belongs to R. Under this assumption, we prove that the noncommutative motives with R-coefficients of X and A are isomorphic. As an application, we show that all the R-linear additive invariants of X and A are exactly the same. Examples include (nonconnective) algebraic K-theory, cyclic homology (and all its variants), topological Hochschild homology, etc. Making use of these isomorphisms, we then computer the R-linear additive invariants of differential operators in positive characteristic, of cubic fourfolds containing a plane, of Severi-Brauer varieties, of Clifford algebras, of quadrics, and of finite dimensional k-algebras of finite global dimension. Along the way we establish two results of independent interest. The first one asserts that every element of the Grothendieck group of X which has rank r becomes invertible in the R-linearized Grothendieck group, and the second one that every additive invariant of finite dimensional algebras of finite global dimension is unaffected under nilpotent extensions.

Additive invariants of finite dimensional algebras of finite global dimension

Let k be a perfect field and A a finite dimensional k-algebra of finite global dimension (e.g. the path algebra of a finite quiver without oriented cycles). Making use of the recent theory of noncommutative motives, we prove that the value of every additive invariant at A only depends on the number of simple modules. Examples of additive invariants include algebraic K-theory, cyclic homology (and all its variants), topological Hochschild homology, etc. Along the way we establish two results of general interest. The first one concerns the compatibility between bilinear pairings and Galois actions on the Grothendieck group of every proper dg category. The second one is a transfer result in the setting of noncommutative motives.

Lefschetz and Hirzebruch-Riemann-Roch formulas via noncommutative motives

V. Lunts has recently established Lefschetz fixed point theorems for Fourier-Mukai functors and dg algebras. In the same vein, D. Shklyarov introduced the noncommutative analogue of the Hirzebruch-Riemann-Roch theorem. In this short article, we see how these constructions and computations formally stem from their motivic counterparts.
