Secure Coverage Enhancement in Aerial Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface-Assisted High-Speed Train Communication Systems

High-speed trains (HSTs) have become a prominent means of transportation, requiring high data rates and reliable communication services for HST passengers. However, the wireless channels in HST communication systems are susceptible to various security threats, including eavesdropping. Addressing these security concerns is therefore of critical importance. One promising technology for enhancing security is the integration of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) on an unmanned aerial vehicle, referred to as an aerial reconfigurable intelligent surface (ARIS). This technology offers significant potential for improving wireless network performance, though it also introduces unique challenges in terms of physical layer security (PLS). This paper investigates the PLS of ARIS-aided HST communication systems. A problem of maximizing the weighted sum secrecy rate is formulated by jointly optimizing the active beamforming at the base station (BS) and the phase shift at the ARIS, subject to constrains on the BS transmit power and the unit modulus of the ARIS reflecting coefficient. To address this problem, a joint optimization algorithm is proposed using the block coordinate descent method. Specifically, the problem is decomposed into two subproblems: active beamforming design and ARIS phase shift optimization. The active beamforming is optimally designed via the successive convex approximation technique, while the ARIS phase shift is efficiently updated using the alternating direction method of multipliers technique. Simulation results demonstrate the rapid convergence of the proposed algorithm, which achieves a higher secrecy rate compared to existing methods in the literature.

Robust Resource Allocation in RIS-Assisted Wireless Networks Integrating NOMA and Over-the-Air Federated Learning

This paper addresses the critical issue of spectrum scarcity and the need to support diverse services, including communication and learning tasks, by presenting a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided wireless network framework that integrates non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) with over-the-air federated learning (AirFL). The proposed system leverages the ability of RIS to adaptively shape wireless channels, aiming to enhance overall network performance for both communication and learning through concurrent uplink transmissions. To tackle critical challenges such as co-channel interference, imperfect channel state information (CSI), and successive interference cancellation (SIC), we develop an optimization framework that focuses on minimizing the optimality gap. This joint optimization is formulated as a non-convex problem, complicated by the intricate interactions between NOMA and AirFL users as well as the impact of imperfect CSI and SIC. To overcome these challenges and reduce the optimality gap, we reformulate the optimization problem as a Markov decision process and solve it using a long short-term memory deep deterministic policy gradient (LSTM-DDPG) algorithm, a memory-based approach within deep reinforcement learning (DRL). Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed approach achieves faster convergence, lower variance, and improved robustness under channel uncertainty, outperforming baseline DRL algorithms such as DDPG, soft actor-critic (SAC), and advantage actor-critic (A2C).

Do Ambient Backscatter Communication Receivers Require Low-Noise Amplifiers?

In ambient backscatter communication (AmBC), strong direct interference from the ambient source poses a major challenge to reliable symbol detection. Although previous studies have shown that employing a low-noise amplifier (LNA) in conventional point-to-point communication improves symbol detection performance at low-to-moderate transmission power, it remains unclear whether this improvement also holds for AmBC. To respond it, in this work, we investigate the symbol detection performance of an AmBC receiver that is equipped with an LNA and adopts the energy detection (ED) to recover tag's information. Particularly, we first propose a new AmBC symbol detection framework that incorporates LNA parameters. On this basis, we derive the bit error rate (BER) of the ED and employ the deflection coefficient (DC) to demonstrate that the detection performance can be enhanced by the LNA at low-to-moderate ambient source transmission power. Then, we derive the near-optimal detection threshold to minimize the BER and propose a method to estimate the required parameters for this threshold by leveraging the tag's pilot symbols.

Backscatter-Assisted High-Speed Rail Communications in Straight Tunnel Environments: Effects of Tag Number and Phase Control

Backscatter communication is a promising technology to enhance the signal strength received by the receiver in straight tunnel environments. The impact of the number of tags and their phase adjustment on system performance remains a challenging issue though. Therefore, in this paper, we investigate the channel gain of backscatter-assisted communication with multiple tags in straight tunnels. In particular, we derive the probabilities that the backscatter link gain is greater than the direct link under adjustable and random phase assumptions by applying the Gaussian and Gamma approximations to derive tractable expressions. The simulation results show that phaseadjustable tags significantly improve the channel gain of the backscatter links compared to the random phase case. Moreover, the number of tags has an upper threshold for an effective tag deployment pattern. These insights provide valuable guidelines for the efficient design of backscatter communication systems in tunnel environments.

Sum Rate Maximization for NOMA-Assisted Uplink Pinching-Antenna Systems

In this paper, we investigate an uplink communication scenario in which multiple users communicate with an access point (AP) employing non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). A pinching antenna, which can be activated at an arbitrary point along a dielectric waveguide, is deployed at the AP to dynamically reconfigure user channels. The objective is to maximize the system sum rate by jointly optimizing the pinching-antenna's position and the users' transmit powers. Two scenarios are considered: one without quality-of-service (QoS) guarantees, and the other with QoS guarantees. In the former case, users transmit at full power, and the antenna position is determined using the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. In the latter, an alternating optimization approach is adopted, where a low-complexity solution is derived for power allocation, and a modified PSO algorithm is applied to optimize the antenna position. Numerical results show that the proposed pinching-antenna-assisted system significantly improves the sum rate compared to the conventional fixed-antenna architecture. Furthermore, the NOMA-based approach consistently outperforms its TDMA-based counterpart. Finally, the proposed PSO-based method achieves near-optimal performance, particularly when the QoS constraints are moderate.

Mode Switching-based STAR-RIS with Discrete Phase Shifters

The increasing demand for cost-effective, high-speed Internet of Things (IoT) applications in the coming sixth-generation (6G) networks has driven research toward maximizing spectral efficiency and simplifying hardware designs. In this context, we investigate the sum rate maximization problem for a mode-switching discrete-phase shifters simultaneously transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS)-aided multi-antenna access point network, emphasizing hardware efficiency and reduced cost. A mixed-integer nonlinear optimization framework is formulated for joint optimization of the active beamforming matrix, user power allocation, and STAR-RIS phase shift vectors, including binary transmission/reflection amplitudes and discrete phase shifters. To solve the formulated problem, we employ a block coordinate descent method, dividing it into three subproblems tackled using difference-of-concave programming and combinatorial optimization techniques. Numerical results validate the effectiveness of the proposed joint optimization approach, consistently achieving superior sum rate performance compared to partial optimization methods, thereby underscoring its potential for efficient and scalable 6G IoT systems.

RIS- and Multi-Snapshot-Enabled SISO 3D Position and Velocity Estimation With Single Base Station

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) panels can act as cost-effective anchors for radio localization, complementing conventional base station (BS) anchors. This paper investigates joint three-dimensional position and velocity estimation (3D-JPVE) in single-input single-output (SISO) systems with only one BS available. We first theoretically show that 3D-JPVE is infeasible when relying solely on a single RIS or on multiple snapshots alone. To address this, we propose combining RIS deployment with multi-snapshot utilization to enable realizable 3D-JPVE. A two-stage method is developed for multi-snapshot channel parameter estimation, comprising a tensor-based coarse estimation step followed by a maximum likelihood refinement step. In particular, we introduce a third-order tensor formulation to decompose the challenging 3D joint angle-of-departure and Doppler shift estimation (3D-JADE) into two tractable subproblems, which are jointly solved via a low-complexity alternating optimization approach. Building on the channel parameter estimates, we further design a two-stage low-complexity method for optimal 3D-JPVE: coarse estimation is obtained from differential measurements through linear equations, and the preliminary results are refined iteratively using the original measurements. Moreover, we derive the closed-form Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) and show that the proposed 3D-JPVE method approaches CRLB-level accuracy. Simulation results confirm the statistical efficiency of the proposed estimators and demonstrate substantial 3D-JPVE performance gains when deploying active RIS compared to passive RIS.

Deep Learning Based Joint Channel Estimation and Positioning for Sparse XL-MIMO OFDM Systems

This paper investigates joint channel estimation and positioning in near-field sparse extra-large multiple-input multiple-output (XL-MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. To achieve cooperative gains between channel estimation and positioning, we propose a deep learning-based two-stage framework comprising positioning and channel estimation. In the positioning stage, the user's coordinates are predicted and utilized in the channel estimation stage, thereby enhancing the accuracy of channel estimation. Within this framework, we propose a U-shaped Mamba architecture for channel estimation and positioning, termed as CP-Mamba. This network integrates the strengths of the Mamba model with the structural advantages of U-shaped convolutional networks, enabling effective capture of local spatial features and long-range temporal dependencies of the channel. Numerical simulation results demonstrate that the proposed two-stage approach with CP-Mamba architecture outperforms existing baseline methods. Moreover, sparse arrays (SA) exhibit significantly superior performance in both channel estimation and positioning accuracy compared to conventional compact arrays.

Two-Phase Channel Estimation for RIS-Assisted THz Systems with Beam Split

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted terahertz (THz) communication is emerging as a key technology to support ultra-high data rates in future sixth-generation networks. However, the acquisition of accurate channel state information (CSI) in such systems is challenging due to the passive nature of RIS and the hybrid beamforming architecture typically employed in THz systems. To address these challenges, we propose a novel low-complexity two-phase channel estimation scheme for RIS-assisted THz systems with beam split effect. In the proposed scheme, we first estimate the full CSI over a small subset of subcarriers, then extract angular information at both the base station and RIS. Subsequently, we recover the full CSI across remaining subcarriers by determining the corresponding spatial directions and angle-excluded coefficients. Theoretical analysis and simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves superior performance in terms of normalized mean-square error while significantly reducing computational complexity compared to existing algorithms.

Structured Tensor Decomposition Based Channel Estimation and Double Refinements for Active RIS Empowered Broadband Systems

Channel parameter recovery is critical for the next-generation reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-empowered communications and sensing. Tensor-based mechanisms are particularly effective, inherently capturing the multi-dimensional nature of wireless channels. However, existing studies assume either a line-of-sight (LOS) scenario or a blocked TX-RX channel. This paper solves a novel problem: tensor-based channel parameter estimation for active RIS-aided multiple-antenna broadband connections in fully multipath environments with the TX-RX link. System settings are customized to construct a fifth-order canonical polyadic (CP) signal tensor that matches the five-dimensional channel. Four tensor factors contain redundant columns, rendering the classical Kruskal's condition for decomposition uniqueness unsatisfied. The fifth-order Vandermonde structured CP decomposition (VSCPD) is developed to address this challenge, making the tensor factorization problem solvable using only linear algebra and offering a relaxed general uniqueness condition. With VSCPD as a perfect decoupling scheme, a sequential triple-stage channel estimation algorithm is proposed based on one-dimensional parameter estimation. The first stage enables multipath identification and algebraic coarse estimation. The following two stages offer optional successive refinements at the cost of increased complexity. The closed-form Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) is derived to assess the estimation performance. Herein, the noise covariance matrix depends on multipath parameters in our active-RIS scenario. Numerical results are provided to verify the effectiveness of proposed algorithms under various evaluation metrics. Our results also show that active RIS can significantly improve channel estimation performance compared to passive RIS.

Breaking the Interference and Fading Gridlock in Backscatter Communications: State-of-the-Art, Design Challenges, and Future Directions

As the Internet of Things (IoT) advances by leaps and bounds, a multitude of devices are becoming interconnected, marking the onset of an era where all things are connected. While this growth opens up opportunities for novel products and applications, it also leads to increased energy demand and battery reliance for IoT devices, creating a significant bottleneck that hinders sustainable progress. At this juncture, backscatter communication (BackCom), as a low-power and passive communication method, emerges as one of the promising solutions to this energy impasse by reducing the manufacturing costs and energy consumption of IoT devices. However, BackCom systems face challenges such as complex interference environments, including direct link interference (DLI) and mutual interference (MI) between tags, which can severely disrupt the efficiency of BackCom networks. Moreover, double-path fading is another major issue that leads to the degraded system performance. To fully unleash the potential of BackComs, the purpose of this paper is to furnish a comprehensive review of existing solutions with a focus on combatting these specific interference challenges and overcoming dual-path fading, offering an insightful analysis and comparison of various strategies for effectively mitigating these issues. Specifically, we begin by introducing the preliminaries for the BackCom, including its history, operating mechanisms, main architectures, etc, providing a foundational understanding of the field. Then, we delve into fundamental issues related to BackCom systems, such as solutions for the DLI, the MI, and the double-path fading. This paper thoroughly provides state-of-the-art advances for each case, particularly highlighting how the latest innovations in theoretical approaches and system design can strategically address these challenges.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Assisted High-Speed Train Communications: Coverage Performance Analysis and Placement Optimization

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) emerges as an efficient and promising technology for the next wireless generation networks and has attracted a lot of attention owing to the capability of extending wireless coverage by reflecting signals toward targeted receivers. In this paper, we consider a RIS-assisted high-speed train (HST) communication system to enhance wireless coverage and improve coverage probability. First, coverage performance of the downlink single-input-single-output system is investigated, and the closed-form expression of coverage probability is derived. Moreover, travel distance maximization problem is formulated to facilitate RIS discrete phase design and RIS placement optimization, which is subject to coverage probability constraint. Simulation results validate that better coverage performance and higher travel distance can be achieved with deployment of RIS. The impacts of some key system parameters including transmission power, signal-to-noise ratio threshold, number of RIS elements, number of RIS quantization bits, horizontal distance between base station and RIS, and speed of HST on system performance are investigated. In addition, it is found that RIS can well improve coverage probability with limited power consumption for HST communications.

Doppler Shift and Channel Estimation for Intelligent Transparent Surface Assisted Communication Systems on High-Speed Railways

The critical distinction between the emerging intelligent transparent surface (ITS) and intelligent reflection surface (IRS) is that the incident signals can penetrate the ITS instead of being reflected, which enables the ITS to combat the severe signal penetration loss for high-speed railway (HSR) wireless communications. This paper thus investigates the channel estimation problem for an ITS-assisted HSR network where the ITS is embedded into the carriage window. We first formulate the channels as functions of physical parameters, and thus transform the channel estimation into a parameter recovery problem. Next, we design the first two pilot blocks within each frame and develop a serial low-complexity channel estimation algorithm. Specifically, the channel estimates are initially obtained, and each estimate is further expressed as the sum of its perfectly known value and the estimation error. By leveraging the relationship between channels for the two pilot blocks, we recover the Doppler shifts from the channel estimates, based on which we can further acquire other channel parameters. Moreover, the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) for each parameter is derived as a performance benchmark. Finally, we provide numerical results to establish the effectiveness of our proposed estimators.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface assisted Two-Way Communications: Performance Analysis and Optimization

In this paper, we investigate the two-way communication between two users assisted by a re-configurable intelligent surface (RIS). The scheme that two users communicate simultaneously over Rayleigh fading channels is considered. The channels between the two users and RIS can either be reciprocal or non-reciprocal. For reciprocal channels, we determine the optimal phases at the RIS to maximize the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR). We then derive exact closed-form expressions for the outage probability and spectral efficiency for single-element RIS. By capitalizing the insights obtained from the single-element analysis, we introduce a gamma approximation to model the product of Rayleigh random variables which is useful for the evaluation of the performance metrics in multiple-element RIS. Asymptotic analysis shows that the outage decreases at $\left(\log(ρ)/ρ\right)^L$ rate where $L$ is the number of elements, whereas the spectral efficiency increases at $\log(ρ)$ rate at large average SINR $ρ$. For non-reciprocal channels, the minimum user SINR is targeted to be maximized. For single-element RIS, closed-form solution is derived whereas for multiple-element RIS the problem turns out to be non-convex. The latter one is solved through semidefinite programming relaxation and a proposed greedy-iterative method, which can achieve higher performance and lower computational complexity, respectively.

Channel Estimation for Wireless Communication Systems Assisted by Large Intelligent Surfaces

In this letter, the channel estimation problem is studied for wireless communication systems assisted by large intelligent surface. Due to features of assistant channel, channel estimation (CE) problem for the investigated system is shown as a constrained estimation error minimization problem, which differs from traditional CE problems. A Lagrange multiplier and dual ascent-based estimation scheme is then designed to obtain a closed-form solution for the estimator iteratively. Moreover, the Cramer-Rao lower bounds are deduced for performance evaluation. Simulation results show that the designed scheme could improve estimation accuracy up to 18%, compared with least square method in low signal-to-noise ratio regime.

Channel Estimation for Ambient Backscatter Communication Systems with Massive-Antenna Reader

Ambient backscatter, an emerging green communication technology, has aroused great interest from both academia and industry. One open problem for ambient backscatter communication (AmBC) systems is channel estimation for a massive-antenna reader. In this paper, we focus on channel estimation problem in AmBC systems with uniform linear array (ULA) at the reader which consists of large number of antennas. We first design a two-step method to jointly estimate channel gains and direction of arrivals (DoAs), and then refine the estimates through angular rotation. Additionally, Cramer-Rao lower bounds (CRLBs) are derived for both the modulus of the channel gain and the DoA estimates. Simulations are then provided to validate the analysis, and to show the efficiency of the proposed approach.

High-Mobility Massive MIMO Communications:Doppler Compensation and Transmit Diversity

High-mobility wireless communications have been receiving a lot attentions. In this paper, we consider the highmobility uplink transmission from a high-speed terminal (HST) to a base station (BS). We propose two transmit diversity schemes for high-mobility massive communications with angle domain Doppler compensation. In the first scheme, we propose the idea of block-wise angle domain Doppler compensation, such that the uplink equivalent channel would exhibit the feature of nearly perfect independent block fading. The signal space diversity encoding technique is then exploited to achieve transmit diversity. In the second scheme, the multiple parallel beamformers with Doppler compensation are exclusively occupied to transmit multiple orthogonal space-time block coding (OSTBC) data streams. Both analysis and numerical results verify that both the proposed schemes can achieve transmit diversity and outperform the conventional scheme.

Energy-Efficient Mobile-Edge Computation Offloading over Multiple Fading Blocks

By allowing a mobile device to offload computation-intensive tasks to a base station, mobile edge computing (MEC) is a promising solution for saving the mobile device's energy. In real applications, the offloading may span multiple fading blocks. In this paper, we investigate energy-efficient offloading over multiple fading blocks with random channel gains. An optimization problem is formulated, which optimizes the amount of data for offloading to minimize the total expected energy consumption of the mobile device. Although the formulated optimization problem is non-convex, we prove that the objective function of the problem is piecewise convex, and accordingly develop an optimal solution for the problem. Numerical results verify the correctness of our findings and the effectiveness of our proposed method.
