Electron-lattice coupling and partial nesting as the origin of Fermi-Arcs in manganites

A tight-binding model for eg electrons coupled to Jahn-Teller lattice distortions is studied via unbiased Monte- Carlo simulations. By focusing on the periodicity of the Jahn Teller distortions, and the one-particle spectral function, our results clarify the physical origin of the Fermi-arcs phase observed in layered manganites. In a range of parameters where no broken symmetry phase exists, the nearly nested Fermi surface favors certain correlations between Jahn Teller distortions. The spectral weight near the Brillouin zone edge is suppressed, leading to the pseudogap in the density of states. We discuss the stability of this phase as a function of temperature and coupling strength for different hole dopings.

Cryptanalysis of a family of self-synchronizing chaotic stream ciphers

Unimodal maps have been broadly used as a base of new encryption strategies. Recently, a stream cipher has been proposed in the literature, whose keystream is basically a symbolic sequence of the (one-parameter) logistic map or of the tent map. In the present work a thorough analysis of the keystream is made which reveals the existence of some serious security problems

Estimation of the control parameter from symbolic sequences: Unimodal maps with variable critical point

The work described in this paper can be interpreted as an application of the order patterns of symbolic dynamics when dealing with unimodal maps. Specifically, it is shown how Gray codes can be used to estimate the probability distribution functions (PDFs) of the order patterns of parametric unimodal maps. Furthermore, these PDFs depend on the value of the parameter, what eventually provides a handle to estimate the parameter value from symbolic sequences (in form of Gray codes), even when the critical point depends on the parameter.

Metal-insulator transition in $(LaMnO_3)_{2n}/(SrMnO_3)_n$ superlattices

The modulation of charge density and spin order in (LaMnO$_3$)$_{2n}$/(SrMnO$_3$)$_n$ ($n$=1-4) superlattices is studied via Monte Carlo simulations of the double-exchange model. G-type antiferromagnetic barriers in the SrMnO$_{3}$ regions with low charge density are found to separate ferromagnetic LaMnO$_{3}$ layers with high charge density. The recently experimentally observed metal-insulator transition with increasing $n$ is reproduced in our studies, and $n=3$ is found to be the critical value.

A Basic Framework for the Cryptanalysis of Digital Chaos-Based Cryptography

Chaotic cryptography is based on the properties of chaos as source of entropy. Many different schemes have been proposed to take advantage of those properties and to design new strategies to encrypt information. However, the right and efficient use of chaos in the context of cryptography requires a thorough knowledge about the dynamics of the selected chaotic system. Indeed, if the final encryption system reveals enough information about the underlying chaotic system it could be possible for a cryptanalyst to get the key, part of the key or some information somehow equivalent to the key just analyzing those dynamical properties leaked by the cryptosystem. This paper shows what those dynamical properties are and how a cryptanalyst can use them to prove the inadequacy of an encryption system for the secure exchange of information. This study is performed through the introduction of a series of mathematical tools which should be the basic framework of cryptanalysis in the context of digital chaos-based cryptography.

On the security of a new image encryption scheme based on chaotic map lattices

This paper reports a detailed cryptanalysis of a recently proposed encryption scheme based on the logistic map. Some problems are emphasized concerning the key space definition and the implementation of the cryptosystem using floating-point operations. It is also shown how it is possible to reduce considerably the key space through a ciphertext-only attack. Moreover, a timing attack allows the estimation of part of the key due to the existent relationship between this part of the key and the encryption/decryption time. As a result, the main features of the cryptosystem do not satisfy the demands of secure communications. Some hints are offered to improve the cryptosystem under study according to those requirements.

Study of Short-distance Spin and Charge Correlations and Local Density-of-States in the CMR regime of the One-Orbital Model for Manganites

The metal-insulator transition, and the associated magnetic transition, in the colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) regime of the one-orbital model for manganites is here studied using Monte Carlo (MC) techniques. Both cooperative oxygen lattice distortions and a finite superexchange coupling among the $t_{\rm 2g}$ spins are included in our investigations. Charge and spin correlations are studied. In the CMR regime, a strong competition between the ferromagnetic metallic and antiferromagnetic charge-ordered insulating states is observed. This competition is shown to be important to understand the resistivity peak that appears near the critical temperature. Moreover, it is argued that the system is dynamically inhomogeneous, with short-range charge and spin correlations that slowly evolve with MC time, producing the glassy characteristics of the CMR state. The local density-of-states (LDOS) is also investigated, and a pseudogap (PG) is found to exist in the CMR temperature range. The width of the PG in the LDOS is calculated and directly compared with recent scanning-tunneling-spectroscopy (STS) experimental results. The agreement between our calculation and the experiment suggests that the depletion of the conductance at low bias observed experimentally is a reflection on the existence of a PG in the LDOS spectra, as opposed to a hard gap. The apparent homogeneity observed via STS techniques could be caused by the slow time characteristics of this probe. Faster experimental methods should unveil a rather inhomogeneous state in the CMR regime, as already observed in neutron scattering experiments.

Breaking an encryption scheme based on chaotic Baker map

In recent years, a growing number of cryptosystems based on chaos have been proposed, many of them fundamentally flawed by a lack of robustness and security. This paper describes the security weaknesses of a recently proposed cryptographic algorithm with chaos at the physical level. It is shown that the security is trivially compromised for practical implementations of the cryptosystem with finite computing precision and for the use of the iteration number n as the secret key. Some possible countermeasures to enhance the security of the chaos-based cryptographic algorithm are also discussed.

Cryptanalysis of an image encryption scheme based on a new total shuffling algorithm

Chaotic systems have been broadly exploited through the last two decades to build encryption methods. Recently, two new image encryption schemes have been proposed, where the encryption process involves a permutation operation and an XOR-like transformation of the shuffled pixels, which are controlled by three chaotic systems. This paper discusses some defects of the schemes and how to break them with a chosen-plaintext attack.

Competing Ferromagnetic and Charge-Ordered States in Models for Manganites: the Origin of the CMR Effect

The one-orbital model for manganites with cooperative phonons and superexchange coupling $J_{\rm AF}$ has been investigated via large-scale Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. Results for two-orbitals are also briefly discussed. Focusing on electronic density $n$=0.75, a regime of competition between ferromagnetic (FM) metallic and charge-ordered (CO) insulating states was identified. In the vicinity of the associated bicritical point, colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) effects were observed. The CMR is associated with the development of short-distance correlations among polarons, above the spin ordering temperatures, resembling the charge arrangement of the low-temperature CO state.

Large-Scale Monte Carlo Study of a Realistic Lattice Model for Ga_(1-x)Mn_xAs

The properties of Mn-doped GaAs are studied at several doping levels and hole compensations, using a real-space Hamiltonian on an fcc lattice that reproduces the valence bands of undoped GaAs. Large-scale Monte Carlo (MC) simulations on a Cray XT3 supercomputer, using up to a thousand nodes, were needed to make this effort possible. Our analysis considers both the spin-orbit interaction and the random distribution of the Mn ions. The hopping amplitudes are functions of the GaAs Luttinger parameters. At the coupling J~1.2eV deduced from photoemission experiments, the MC Curie temperature and the shape of the magnetization curves are in agreement with experimental results for annealed samples. Although there are sizable differences with mean-field predictions, the system is found to be closer to a hole-fluid regime than to localized carriers.

Estimating short-time period to break different types of chaotic modulation based secure communications

In recent years, chaotic attractors have been extensively used in the design of secure communication systems. One of the preferred ways of transmitting the information signal is binary chaotic modulation, in which a binary message modulates a parameter of the chaotic generator. This paper presents a method of attack based on estimating the short-time period of the ciphertext generated from the modulated chaotic attractor. By calculating and then filtering the short-time period of the transmitted signal it is possible to obtain the binary information signal with great accuracy without any knowledge of the parameters of the underlying chaotic system. This method is successfully applied to various secure communication systems proposed in the literature based on different chaotic attractors.
