Realizing posets as prime spectra of Leavitt path algebras

We associate in a natural way to any partially ordered set $(P,\leq)$ a directed graph $E_P$ (where the vertices of $E_P$ correspond to the elements of $P$, and the edges of $E_P$ correspond to related pairs of elements of $P$), and then describe the prime spectrum of the resulting Leavitt path algebra $L_K(E_P)$. This construction allows us to realize a wide class of partially ordered sets as the prime spectra of rings. More specifically, any partially ordered set in which every downward directed subset has a greatest lower bound, and where these greatest lower bounds satisfy certain compatibility conditions, can be so realized. In particular, any partially ordered set satisfying the descending chain condition is in this class.

Decomposable Leavitt path algebras for arbitrary graphs

For any field $K$ and for a completely arbitrary graph $E$, we characterize the Leavitt path algebras $L_K(E)$ that are indecomposable (as a direct sum of two-sided ideals) in terms of the underlying graph. When the algebra decomposes, it actually does so as a direct sum of Leavitt path algebras for some suitable graphs. Under certain finiteness conditions, a unique indecomposable decomposition exists.

Endomorphism rings of Leavitt path algebras

We investigate conditions under which the endomorphism ring of the Leavitt path algebra $L_{K}(E)$ possesses various ring and module-theoretical properties such as being von Neumann regular, $π$-regular, strongly $π$-regular or self-injective. We also describe conditions under which $L_{K}(E)$ is continuous as well as automorphism invariant as a right $L_{K}(E)$-module.

Noetherian Leavitt path algebras and their regular algebras

In the past, it has been shown that the Leavitt path algebra $L(E)=L_K(E)$ of a graph $E$ over a field $K$ is left and right noetherian if and only if the graph $E$ is finite and no cycle of $E$ has an exit. If $Q(E)=Q_K(E)$ denotes the regular algebra over $L(E),$ we prove that these conditions are further equivalent with any of the following: $L(E)$ contains no infinite set of orthogonal idempotents, $L(E)$ has finite uniform dimension, $L(E)$ is directly finite, $Q(E)$ is directly finite, $Q(E)$ is unit-regular, and a few more equivalences. In addition, if the involution on $K$ is positive definite, these conditions are equivalent with the following: the involution $^\ast$ extends from $L(E)$ to $Q(E),$ $Q(E)$ is $^\ast$-regular, $Q(E)$ is finite, $Q(E)$ is the maximal (total or classical) symmetric ring of quotients of $L(E),$ every finitely generated nonsingular $L(E)$-module is projective, and the matrix ring $M_n(L(E))$ is strongly Baer for every $n$. It may not be surprising that a noetherian Leavitt path algebra has these properties, but a more interesting fact is that these properties hold only if a Leavitt path algebra is noetherian. Using some of these equivalences, we give a specific description of the inverse of the isomorphism $V(L(E))\rightarrow V(Q(E))$ of monoids of equivalence classes of finitely generated projective modules for noetherian Leavitt path algebras. We also prove that two noetherian Leavitt path algebras are isomorphic as rings if and only if they are isomorphic as $^\ast$-algebras. This answers in affirmative the Isomorphism Conjecture for the class of noetherian Leavitt path algebras: if $L_{\mathbb C}(E)$ and $L_{\mathbb C}(F)$ are noetherian Leavitt path algebras, then $L_{\mathbb C}(E)\cong L_{\mathbb C}(F)$ as rings implies $C^*(E)\cong C^*(F)$ as $^\ast$-algebras.

The Leavitt path algebras of generalized Cayley graphs

Let $n$ be a positive integer. For each $0\leq j \leq n-1$ we let $C_n^{j}$ denote Cayley graph for the cyclic group ${\mathbb Z}_n $ with respect to the subset $\{1, j\}$. For any such pair $(n,j)$ we compute the size of the Grothendieck group of the Leavitt path algebra $L_K(C_n^j)$; the analysis is related to a collection of integer sequences described by Haselgrove in the 1940's. When $j=0,1,$ or 2, we are able to extract enough additional information about the structure of these Grothendieck groups so that we may apply a Kirchberg-Phillips-type result to explicitly realize the algebras $L_K(C_n^j)$ as the Leavitt path algebras of graphs having at most three vertices. The analysis in the $j=2$ case leads us to some perhaps surprising and apparently nontrivial connections to the classical Fibonacci sequence.

*-Regular Leavitt path algebras of arbitrary graphs

If $K$ is a field with involution and $E$ an arbitrary graph, the involution from $K$ naturally induces an involution of the Leavitt path algebra $L_K(E).$ We show that the involution on $L_K(E)$ is proper if the involution on $K$ is positive definite, even in the case when the graph $E$ is not necessarily finite or row-finite. It has been shown that the Leavitt path algebra $L_K(E)$ is regular if and only if $E$ is acyclic. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for $L_{K}(E)$ to be $^\ast$-regular (i.e. regular with proper involution). This characterization of $^\ast$-regularity of a Leavitt path algebra is given in terms of an algebraic property of $K,$ not just a graph-theoretic property of $E.$ This differs from the known characterizations of various other algebraic properties of a Leavitt path algebra in terms of graph-theoretic properties of $E$ alone. As a corollary, we show that Handelman's conjecture (stating that every $^\ast$-regular ring is unit-regular) holds for Leavitt path algebras. Moreover, its generalized version for rings with local units also continues to hold for Leavitt path algebras over arbitrary graphs.

Atlas of Leavitt Path Algebras of small graphs

The aim of this work is the description of the isomorphism classes of all Leavitt path algebras coming from graphs satisfying Condition (Sing) with up to three vertices. In particular, this classification recovers the one achieved by Abrams et al. in the case of graphs whose Leavitt path algebras are purely infinite simple. The description of the isomorphism classes is given in terms of a series of invariants including the K_0 group, the socle, the number of loops with no exits and the number of hereditary and saturated subsets of the graph.

Kumjian-Pask algebras of higher-rank graphs

We introduce higher-rank analogues of the Leavitt path algebras, which we call the Kumjian-Pask algebras. We prove graded and Cuntz-Krieger uniqueness theorems for these algebras, and analyze their ideal structure.

Non-simple purely infinite rings

In this paper we introduce the concept of purely infinite rings, which in the simple case agrees with the already existing notion of pure infiniteness. We establish various permanence properties of this notion, with respect to passage to matrix rings, corners, and behaviour under extensions, so being purely infinite is preserved under Morita equivalence. We show that a wealth of examples falls into this class, including important analogues of constructions commonly found in operator algebras. In particular, for any (s-)unital $K$-algebra having enough nonzero idempotents (for example, for a von Neumann regular algebra) its tensor product over $K$ with many nonsimple Leavitt path algebras is purely infinite.

Socle theory for Leavitt path algebras of arbitrary graphs

The main aim of the paper is to give a socle theory for Leavitt path algebras of arbitrary graphs. We use both the desingularization process and combinatorial methods to study Morita invariant properties concerning the socle and to characterize it, respectively. Leavitt path algebras with nonzero socle are described as those which have line points, and it is shown that the line points generate the socle of a Leavitt path algebra, extending so the results for row-finite graphs in the previous paper [12] (but with different methods). A concrete description of the socle of a Leavitt path algebra is obtained: it is a direct sum of matrix rings (of finite or infinite size) over the base field. New proofs of the Graded Uniqueness and of the Cuntz-Krieger Uniqueness Theorems are given, shorthening significantly the original ones.

The socle of a Leavitt path algebra

In this paper we characterize the minimal left ideals of a Leavitt path algebra as those ones which are isomorphic to principal left ideals generated by line point vertices, that is, by vertices whose trees do not contain neither bifurcations nor closed paths. Moreover, we show that the socle of a Leavitt path algebra is the two-sided ideal generated by these line point vertices. This characterization allows us to compute the socle of some algebras that arise as the Leavitt path algebra of some row-finite graphs. A complete description of the socle of a Leavitt path algebra is given: it is a locally matricial algebra.
