Periodic equatorial orbits in a black bounce scenario

We study equatorial closed orbits in a popular black bounce model to see if the internal structure of these objects could lead to peculiar observable features. Paralleling the analysis of the Schwarzschild and Kerr metrics, we show that in the black bounce case each orbit can also be associated with a triplet of integers which can then be used to construct a rational number characterizing each periodic orbit. When the black bounce solution represents a traversable wormhole, we show that the previous classification scheme is still applicable with minor adaptations. We confirm in this way that this established framework enables a complete description of the equatorial dynamics across a spectrum of cases, from regular black holes to wormholes. Varying the black bounce parameter $r_{min}$, we compare the trajectories in the Simpson-Visser model with those in the Schwarzschild metric (and the rotating case with Kerr). We find that in some cases even small increments in $r_{min}$ can lead to significant changes in the orbits.

Perturbative solutions for compact objects in (2+1)-dimensional Bopp-Podolsky electrodynamics

We investigate the space-time geometry generated by compact objects in (2+1)-dimensional Bopp-Podolsky electrodynamics. Inspired by previous studies where the Bopp-Podolsky field acts as a source for spherically symmetric solutions, we revisit this question within the lower-dimensional (2+1) framework. Using a perturbative approach, we derive a charged BTZ-like black hole solution and compute corrections up to second order in a perturbative expansion valid far from the horizon. Our analysis suggests that the near-horizon and inner structure of the solution remain unaltered, indicating that no new non-black hole objects emerge in this regime. In particular, we do not find evidence of wormhole solutions in the (2+1)-dimensional version of this theory.

Boundary terms and on-shell action in Ricci-based gravity theories: the Hamiltonian formulation

Considering the so-called Ricci-based gravity theories, a family of extensions of General Relativity whose action is given by a non-linear function of contractions and products of the (symmetric part of the) Ricci tensor of an independent connection, the Hamiltonian formulation of the theory is obtained. To do so, the independent connection is decomposed in two parts, one compatible with a metric tensor and the other one given by a 3-rank tensor. Subsequently, the Riemann tensor is expressed in terms of its projected components onto a hypersurface, allowing to construct the $3+1$ decomposition of the theory and the corresponding Gauss-Codazzi relations, where the boundary terms naturally arise in the gravitational action. Finally, the ADM decomposition is followed in order to construct the corresponding Hamiltonian and the ADM energy for any Ricci-based gravity theory. The formalism is applied to the simple case of Schwarzschild space-time.

Static and stationary loop quantum black bounces

We explore a static and stationary black bounce geometry inspired by Loop Quantum Gravity (LQG), focusing on how LQG corrections and regularization parameters affect its properties. Building on the spherically symmetric and static black hole solution from \cite{Kelly:2020uwj}, we trace its origin to Non-Linear Electrodynamics (NED) with electric and magnetic charges and check the energy conditions (NEC, WEC, SEC). By extending the geometry using the Simpson-Visser procedure, we construct a black hole-wormhole bounce structure, influenced by LQG parameters. We analyze the horizon structure to constrain parameters for black holes and wormholes, and examine curvature and new sources including a phantom-type scalar field to ensure spacetime regularity and adherence to energy conditions. Thermodynamic properties are also studied, revealing the existence of remnants and phase transitions. Additionally, we derive a rotating black bounce solution, verifying its regularity, and putting forward that the spherical bouncing surface turns into an ellipsoid with no ring singularity. Finally, we find that increasing the LQG parameter leads to smaller ergospheres and reduced shadows, with potential implications for observational astrophysics and quantum gravitational signatures.

Stellar structure in $f(R,T)$ gravity: some exact solutions

We find some exact solutions for constant-density and quark matter equations of state in stellar structure models framed within the $f(R,T)=R+λκ^2 T$ theory of gravity, where $R$ is the curvature scalar, $T$ the trace of the stress-energy tensor, and $λ$ some constant. These solutions correspond to specific values of the constant $λ$, and represent different compactness states of the corresponding stars, though only those made of quark matter can be regarded as physical. The latter modify the compactness (Buchdahl) limit of neutron stars upwards for $λ>0$ until saturating the one of black holes. Our results show that it is possible to find useful insights on stellar structure in this class of theories, a fact that could be used for obtaining constraints on limiting masses such as the minimum hydrogen burning mass.

Cosmological Solutions in Polynomial Affine Gravity with Torsion

The Polynomial Affine Gravity is an alternative gravitational model, where the interactions are mediated solely by the affine connection, instead of the metric tensor. In this paper, we explore the space of solutions to the field equations when the torsion fields are turned on, in a homogeneous and isotropic (cosmological) scenario. We explore various metric structures that emerge in the space of solutions.

On metric-affine bumblebee model coupled to scalar matter

We consider the coupling of the metric-affine bumblebee gravity model to scalar matter and calculate the lower-order contributions to two-point functions of bumblebee and scalar fields in the weak gravity approximation. We also obtain the one-loop effective potentials for both scalar and vector fields.

Nonsingular, lump-like, scalar compact objects in $(2+1)$-dimensional Einstein gravity

We study the space-time geometry generated by coupling a free scalar field with a non-canonical kinetic term to General Relativity in $(2+1)$ dimensions. After identifying a family of scalar Lagrangians that yield exact analytical solutions in static and circularly symmetric scenarios, we classify the various types of solutions and focus on a branch that yields asymptotically flat geometries. We show that the solutions within such a branch can be divided in two types, namely, naked singularities and nonsingular objects without a center. In the latter, the energy density is localized around a maximum and vanishes only at infinity and at an inner boundary. This boundary has vanishing curvatures and cannot be reached by any time-like or null geodesic in finite affine time. This allows us to consistently interpret such solutions as nonsingular, lump-like, static compact scalar objects, whose eventual extension to the $(3+1)$-dimensional context could provide structures of astrophysical interest.

Singular space-times with bounded algebraic curvature scalars

We show that the absence of unbounded algebraic curvature invariants constructed from polynomials of the Riemann tensor cannot guarantee the absence of strong singularities. As a consequence, it is not sufficient to rely solely on the analysis of such scalars to assess the regularity of a given space-time. This conclusion follows from the analysis of incomplete geodesics within the internal region of asymmetric wormholes supported by scalar matter which arise in two distinct metric-affine gravity theories. These wormholes have bounded algebraic curvature scalars everywhere, which highlights that their finiteness does not prevent the emergence of pathologies (singularities) in the geodesic structure of space-time. By analyzing the tidal forces in the internal wormhole region, we find that the angular components are unbounded along incomplete radial time-like geodesics. The strength of the singularity is determined by the evolution of Jacobi fields along such geodesics, finding that it is of strong type, as volume elements are torn apart as the singularity is approached. Lastly, and for completeness, we consider the wormhole of the quadratic Palatini theory and present an analysis of the tidal forces in the entire space-time.

Photon rings as tests for alternative spherically symmetric geometries with thin accretion disks

The imaging by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) of the supermassive central objects at the heart of the M87 and Milky Way (Sgr A$^\star$) galaxies, has marked the first step into peering at the photon rings and central brightness depression that characterize the optical appearance of black holes surrounded by an accretion disk. Recently, Vagnozzi et. al. [S.~Vagnozzi, \textit{et al.} arXiv:2205.07787 [gr-qc]] used the claim by the EHT that the size of the {\it shadow} of Sgr A$^\star$ can be inferred by calibrated measurements of the bright ring enclosing it, to constrain a large number of spherically symmetric space-time geometries. In this work we use this result to study some features of the first and second photon rings of a restricted pool of such geometries in thin accretion disk settings. The emission profile of the latter is described by calling upon three analytic samples belonging to the family introduced by Gralla, Lupsasca and Marrone, in order to characterize such photon rings using the Lyapunov exponent of nearly bound orbits and discuss its correlation with the luminosity extinction rate between the first and second photon rings. We finally elaborate on the chances of using such photon rings as observational discriminators of alternative black hole geometries using very long baseline interferometry.

Echoes from bounded universes

We construct a general class of modified Ellis wormholes, where one asymptotic Minkowski region is replaced by a bounded 2-sphere core, characterized by asymptotic finite areal radius. We pursue an in-depth analysis of the resulting geometry, outlining that geodesic completeness is guaranteed also when the radial function asymptotically shrinks to zero. Then, we study the evolution of scalar perturbations, bringing out how these geometric configurations can in principle affect the time-domain profiles of quasinormal modes, pointing out the distinctive features with respect to other black holes or wormholes geometries.

Numerical evolutions of boson stars in Palatini $f(\mathcal{R})$ gravity

We investigate the time evolution of spherically symmetric boson stars in Palatini $f(\mathcal{R})$ gravity through Numerical Relativity computations. Employing a novel approach that establishes a correspondence between modified gravity with scalar matter and General Relativity with modified scalar matter, we are able to use the techniques of Numerical Relativity to simulate these systems. Specifically, we focus on the quadratic theory $f(\mathcal{R})=\mathcal{R}+ξ\mathcal{R}^2$ and compare the obtained solutions with those in General Relativity, exploring both positive and negative values of the coupling parameter $ξ$. Our findings reveal that boson stars in Palatini $f(\mathcal{R})$ gravity exhibit both stable and unstable evolutions. The latter give rise to three distinct scenarios: migration towards a stable configuration, complete dispersion, and gravitational collapse leading to the formation of a baby universe structure.

Asymmetric wormholes in Palatini $f(\mathcal{R})$ gravity: Energy conditions, absorption and quasibound states

We investigate the absorption properties of reflection-asymmetric wormholes constructed via the thin-shell formalism in Palatini $f({\cal R})$ gravity. Such wormholes come from the matching of two Reissner-Nordström spacetimes at a time-like hypersurface (shell), which, according to the junction conditions in Palatini $f({\cal R})$ gravity, can have positive or negative energy density. Using numerical methods we investigate several configurations that satisfy the junction conditions, and analyze how the parameters of the system affect the absorption spectra. We confirm that the absorption cross section of wormholes at low frequencies significantly departs from that of black holes, and observe that in configurations made out of two naked singularities, the absorption spectra exhibit new features due to the effective light ring associated to the wormhole throat. The possibility of observing the presence of resonances at high frequencies is also discussed.

Dymnikova GUP-corrected black holes

We consider the impact of Generalized Uncertainty Principle (GUP) effects on the Dymnikova regular black hole. The minimum length scale introduced by the GUP modifies the energy density associated with the gravitational source, referred to as the Dymnikova vacuum, based on its analogy with the gravitational counterpart of the Schwinger effect. We present an approximated analytical solution (together with exact numerical results for comparison) that encompasses a wide range of black hole sizes, spanning from microscopic (Planckian and sub-Planckian) to macroscopic scales, whose properties crucially depend on the ratio between the de Sitter core radius and the GUP scale. The emergence of a wormhole inside de Sitter core in the innermost region of the object is one of the most relevant features of this family of solutions. Our findings demonstrate that these solutions remain singularity free, confirming the robustness of the Dymnikova regular black hole under GUP corrections. Regarding energy conditions, we find that the violation of the strong, weak, and null energy conditions which is characteristic of the pure Dymnikova case does not occur at Planckian scales in the GUP corrected solution. This contrast suggests a departure from conventional expectations and highlights the influence of quantum corrections and the GUP in modifying the energy conditions near the Planck scale.

Shadows and photon rings of regular black holes and geonic horizonless compact objects

The optical appearance of a body compact enough to feature an unstable bound orbit, when surrounded by an accretion disk, is expected to be dominated by a luminous ring of radiation enclosing a central brightness depression typically known as the shadow. Despite observational limitations, the rough details of this picture have been now confirmed by the results of the EHT Collaboration on the imaging of the M87 and Milky Way supermassive central objects. However, the precise characterization of both features - ring and shadow - depends on the interaction between the background geometry and the accretion disk, thus being a fertile playground to test our theories on the nature of compact objects and the gravitational field itself in the strong-field regime. In this work we use both features in order to test a continuous family of solutions interpolating between regular black holes and horizonless compact objects, which arise within the Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld theory of gravity, a viable extension of Einstein's General Relativity (GR). To this end we consider seven distinctive classes of such configurations (five black holes and two traversable wormholes) and study their optical appearances under illumination by a geometrically and optically thin accretion disk, emitting monochromatically with three analytic intensity profiles previously suggested in the literature. We build such images and consider the sub-ring structure created by light rays crossing the disk more than once and existing on top of the main ring of radiation. We discuss in detail the modifications as compared to their GR counterparts, the Lyapunov exponents of unstable nearly-bound orbits, as well as the differences between black hole and traversable wormholes for the three intensity profiles.

Birth of baby universes from gravitational collapse in a modified-gravity scenario

We consider equilibrium models of spherical boson stars in Palatini $f(\mathcal{R})=\mathcal{R}+ξ\mathcal{R}^2$ gravity and study their collapse when perturbed. The Einstein-Klein-Gordon system is solved using a recently established correspondence in an Einstein frame representation. We find that, in that frame, the endpoint is a nonrotating black hole surrounded by a quasi-stationary cloud of scalar field. However, the dynamics in the $f(\mathcal{R})$ frame is dramatically different. The innermost region of the collapsing object exhibits the formation of a finite-size, exponentially-expanding $\textit{ baby universe}$ connected with the outer (parent) universe via a minimal area surface (a throat or umbilical cord). Our simulations indicate that this surface is at all times hidden inside a horizon, causally disconnecting the baby universe from observers above the horizon. The implications of our findings in other areas of gravitational physics are also discussed.

A diffeomorphism invariant family of metric-affine actions for loop cosmologies

In loop quantum cosmology (LQC) the big bang singularity is generically resolved by a big bounce. This feature holds even when modified quantization prescriptions of the Hamiltonian constraint are used such as in mLQC-I and mLQC-II. While the later describes an effective description qualitatively similar to that of standard LQC, the former describes an asymmetric evolution with an emergent Planckian de-Sitter pre-bounce phase even in the absence of a potential. We consider the potential relation of these canonically quantized non-singular models with effective actions based on a geometric description. We find a 3-parameter family of metric-affine $f(\mathcal{R})$ theories which accurately approximate the effective dynamics of LQC and mLQC-II in all regimes and mLQC-I in the post-bounce phase. Two of the parameters are fixed by enforcing equivalence at the bounce, and the background evolution of the relevant observables can be fitted with only one free parameter. It is seen that the non-perturbative effects of these loop cosmologies are universally encoded by a logarithmic correction that only depends on the bounce curvature of the model. In addition, we find that the best fit value of the free parameter can be very approximately written in terms of fundamental parameters of the underlying quantum description for the three models. The values of the best fits can be written in terms of the bounce density in a simple manner, and the values for each model are related to one another by a proportionality relation involving only the Barbero-Immirzi parameter.

Vacuum polarization and induced Maxwell and Kalb-Ramond effective action in very special relativity

This work investigates the implications of very special relativity (VSR) on the calculation of vacuum polarization for fermions in the presence of Maxwell and Kalb-Ramond gauge fields in four-dimensional spacetime. We derive the $SIM(2)$-covariant gauge theory associated with an Abelian antisymmetric 2-tensor and its corresponding field strength. We demonstrate that the free VSR-Kalb-Ramond electrodynamics is equivalent to a massive scalar field with a single polarization. Furthermore, we determine an explicit expression for the effective action involving Maxwell and Kalb-Ramond fields due to fermionic vacuum polarization at one-loop order. The quantum corrections generate divergences free of nonlocal terms only in the VSR-Maxwell sector. At the same time, we observe UV/IR mixing divergences due to the entanglement of VSR-nonlocal effects with quantum higher-derivative terms for the Kalb-Ramond field. However, in the lower energy limit, the effective action can be renormalized like in the Lorentz invariant case.
