Prolongations of $(3, 6)$-distributions by singular curves

A subbundle of rank 3 in the tangent bundle over a 6-dimensional manifold is called a (3, 6)-distribution if its local sections generate the whole tangent bundle by taking their Lie brackets once. An integral curve of a distribution, whose velocity vectors belong to the distribution, can be a singular curve or an abnormal extremal in the sense of geometric control theory. In this paper, given a (3, 6)-distribution, we prolong it, using the data of singular curves, to a (3,5,7,8)-distribution, to a (3, 5, 7, 8, 9)-distribution which possesses additional pseudo-product structure respectively. Regarding also another prolongation to a (4, 6, 8)-distribution, we show the equivalence of the classification problems of those four classes of distributions obtained from (3, 6)-distributions, generalising the correspondences of those in B_3-SO(3,4)-homogeneous models.

Prolongation of $(8,15)$-Distribution of Type $F_4$ by Singular Curves

Cartan gives the model of $(8, 15)$-distribution with the exceptional simple Lie algebra $F_4$ as its symmetry algebra in his paper (1893), which is published one year before his thesis. In the present paper, we study abnormal extremals (singular curves) of Cartan's model from viewpoints of sub-Riemannian geometry and geometric control theory. Then we construct the prolongation of Cartan's model based on the data related to its singular curves, and obtain the nilpotent graded Lie algebra which is isomorphic to the negative part of the graded Lie algebra $F_4$.

Singular curves of hyperbolic $(4, 7)$-distributions of type $C_3$

A distribution of rank $4$ on a $7$-dimensional manifold is called a $(4, 7)$-distribution if its local sections generate the whole tangent space by taking Lie brackets once. Singular curves of $(4, 7)$-distributions are studied in this paper. In particular the class of hyperbolic $(4, 7)$-distributions of type $C_3$ is introduced and singular curves are completely described via prolongations for them.

Legendre singularities of sub-Riemannian geodesics

Let $M$ be a surface with a Riemannian metric and $UM$ the unit tangent bundle over $M$ with the canonical contact sub-Riemannian structure $D$ on $UM$. In this paper, the complete local classification of singularities, under the Legendre fibration $UM$ over $M$, is given for sub-Riemannian geodesics of $(UM, D)$. Legendre singularities of sub-Riemannian geodesics are classified completely also for another Legendre fibration from $UM$ to the space of Riemannian geodesics on $M$. The duality on Legendre singularities is observed related to the pendulum motion.

Singularities of parallels to tangent developable surfaces

It is known that the class of developable surfaces which have zero Gaussian curvature in three dimensional Euclidean space is preserved by the parallel transformations. A tangent developable surface is defined as a ruled developable surface by tangent lines to a space curve and it has singularities at least along the space curve, called the directrix or the the edge of regression. Also the class of tangent developable surfaces are invariant under the parallel deformations. In this paper the notions of tangent developable surfaces and their parallels are naturally generalized for frontal curves in general in Euclidean spaces of arbitrary dimensions. We study singularities appearing on parallels to tangent developable surfaces of frontal curves and give the classification of generic singularities on them for frontal curves in 3 or 4 dimensional Euclidean spaces.

Normal and tangent maps to frontals

The notion of frontals in Euclidean space is introduced and the normal and tangent maps to frontals are studied for both geometrical and dynamical aspects of frontals. Moreover we observe that parallels of the tangent map to a frontal curve is right equivalent to the tangent map of a frontal curve under some natural conditions.

Recognition Problem of Frontal Singularities

This is a survey article on recognition problem of frontal singularities. We specify geometrically several frontal singularities and then we solve the recognition problem of such singularities, giving explicit normal forms. We combine the recognition results by K. Saji and several arguments on openings, which was performed for the classification of singularities of tangent surfaces (tangent developables) by the author. As an application of our solutions of recognition problem of frontal singularities, we announce the classification of singularities appearing in tangent surfaces of generic null curves which are ruled by null geodesics in general Lorentz three-manifolds, mentioning related recognition results and open problems.

Cofrontals

In this paper we introduce the notion of cofrontal mappings, as the dual objects to frontal mappings, and study their basic local and global properties. Cofrontals are very special mappings and far from generic nor stable except for the case of submersions. It is observed that any smooth mapping can be $C^0$-approximated by a possibly \lq\lq unfair" cofrontal or a frontal. However global "fair" cofrontals are very restrictive to exist. Then we give a method to construction "fair" cofrontals with fiber-dimension one and a target-local diffeomorphism classification of such cofrontals, under some finiteness condition.

Duality of (2,3,5)-distributions and Lagrangian cone structures

As was shown by a part of the authors, for a given $(2, 3, 5)$-distribution $D$ on a $5$-dimensional manifold $Y$, there is, locally, a Lagrangian cone structure $C$ on another $5$-dimensional manifold $X$ which consists of abnormal or singular paths of $(Y, D)$. We give a characterization of the class of Lagrangian cone structures corresponding to $(2, 3, 5)$-distributions. Thus we complete the duality between $(2, 3, 5)$-distributions and Lagrangian cone structures via pseudo-product structures of type $G_2$. A local example of non-flat perturbations of the global model of flat Lagrangian cone structure which corresponds to $(2,3,5)$-distributions is given.

Singularities of Frontals

In this survey article we introduce the notion of frontals, which provides a class of generalised submanifolds with singularities but with well-defined tangent spaces. We present a review of basic theory and known studies on frontals in several geometric problems from singularity theory viewpoints. In particular, in this paper, we try to give some of detailed proofs and related ideas, which were omitted in the original papers, to the basic and important results related to frontals.

Singularities of tangent surfaces to generic space curves

We give the complete solution to the local diffeomorphism classification problem of generic singularities which appear in tangent surfaces, in as wider situations as possible. We interpret tangent geodesics as tangent lines whenever a (semi-)Riemannian metric, or, more generally, an affine connection is given in an ambient space of arbitrary dimension. Then, given an immersed curve, we define the tangent surface as the ruled surface by tangent geodesics to the curve. We apply the characterization of frontal singularities found by Kokubu, Rossman, Saji, Umehara, Yamada, and Fujimori, Saji, Umehara, Yamada, and found by the first author related to the procedure of openings of singularities.

Dependence of vector fields and singular controls

We show an example providing a significance in geometric control theory of the existence of the dependence locus of a system of vector fields in particular, the generic appearance of non-trivial singular trajectories embedded in the dependence locus.

Monge-Ampère Systems with Lagrangian Pairs

The classes of Monge-Ampère systems, decomposable and bi-decomposable Monge-Ampère systems, including equations for improper affine spheres and hypersurfaces of constant Gauss-Kronecker curvature are introduced. They are studied by the clear geometric setting of Lagrangian contact structures, based on the existence of Lagrangian pairs in contact structures. We show that the Lagrangian pair is uniquely determined by such a bi-decomposable system up to the order, if the number of independent variables $\geq 3$. We remark that, in the case of three variables, each bi-decomposable system is generated by a non-degenerate three-form in the sense of Hitchin. It is shown that several classes of homogeneous Monge-Ampère systems with Lagrangian pairs arise naturally in various geometries. Moreover we establish the upper bounds on the symmetry dimensions of decomposable and bi-decomposable Monge-Ampère systems respectively in terms of the geometric structure and we show that these estimates are sharp (Proposition 4.2 and Theorem 5.3).

Affine connections and singularities of tangent surfaces to space curves

We give the complete solution to the local diffeomorphism classification problem of generic singularities which appear in tangent surfaces, in as wider situations as possible. We interpret tangent geodesics as tangent lines whenever a (semi-)Riemannian metric, or, more generally, an affine connection is given in an ambient space of arbitrary dimension. Then, given an immersed curve, or, more generally a directed curve or a frontal curve which has well-defined tangent directions along the curve, we define the tangent surface as the ruled surface by tangent geodesics to the curve. We apply the characterization of frontal singularities found by Kokubu, Rossman, Saji, Umehara, Yamada, and Fujimori, Saji, Umehara, Yamada, and found by the first author related to the procedure of openings of singularities.

Duality of singular paths for (2,3,5)-distributions

We show a duality which arises from distributions of Cartan type, having growth (2, 3, 5), from the view point of geometric control theory. In fact we consider the space of singular (or abnormal) paths on a given five dimensional space endowed with a Cartan distribution, which form another five dimensional space with a cone structure. We regard the cone structure as a control system and show that the space of singular paths of the cone structure is naturally identified with the original space. Moreover we observe an asymmetry on this duality in terms of singular paths.

Singularities of Tangent Varieties to Curves and Surfaces

It is given the diffeomorphism classification on generic singularities of tangent varieties to curves with arbitrary codimension in a projective space. The generic classifications are performed in terms of certain geometric structures and differential systems on flag manifolds, via several techniques in differentiable algebra. It is provided also the generic diffeomorphism classification of singularities on tangent varieties to contact-integral curves in the standard contact projective space. Moreover we give basic results on the classification of singularities of tangent varieties to generic surfaces and Legendre surfaces.

Generic bifurcations of framed curves in a space form and their envelopes

The generic singularities and bifurcations are classified for one-parameter families of curves with frames in a space form, the Euclidean space, the elliptic space or the hyperbolic space via projective geometry. Two kinds of frames are considered, adapted frames and osculating frames, in terms of certain differential systems on flag manifolds.
