Ground-State Properties of Magnetically Trapped Bose-Condensed Rubidium Gas

We give a quantitative account of the ground-state properties of the dilute magnetically trapped $^{87}$Rb gas recently cooled and Bose-Einstein condensed at nanokelvin-scale temperatures. Using simple scaling arguments, we show that at large particle number the kinetic energy is a small perturbation, and find a spatial structure of the cloud of atoms and its momentum distribution dependent in an essential way on particle interactions. We also estimate the superfluid coherence length and the critical angular velocity at which vortex lines become energetically favorable.

Magnetic Fields Produced by Phase Transition Bubbles in the Electroweak Phase Transition

The electroweak phase transition, if proceeding through nucleation and growth of bubbles, should generate large scale turbulent flow, which in turn generates magnetic turbulence and hence magnetic fields on the scale of turbulent flow. We discuss the seeding of this turbulent field by the motion of the dipole charge layers in the phase transition bubble walls, and estimate the strength of the produced fields.

Correlations and Fluctuations in High-Energy Nuclear Collisions

Nucleon correlations in the target and projectile nuclei are shown to reduce significantly the fluctuations in multiple nucleon-nucleon collisions, total multiplicity and transverse energy in relativistic heavy-ion collisions, in particular for heavy projectile and target. The interplay between cross-section fluctuations, from color transparency and opacity, and nuclear correlations is calculated and found to be able to account for large fluctuations in transverse energy spectra. Numerical implementation of correlations and cross-section fluctuations in Monte-Carlo codes is discussed.

Stability of the vortex lattice in a rotating superfluid

We analyze the stability of the vortex lattice in a rotating superfluid against thermal fluctuations associated with the long-wavelength Tkachenko modes of the lattice. Inclusion of only the two-dimensional modes leads formally to instability in infinite lattices; however, when the full three-dimensional spectrum of modes is taken into account, the thermally-induced lattice displacements are indeed finite.
