On the zero set of holomorphic sectional curvature

A notable example due to Heier, Lu, Wong, and Zheng shows that there exist compact complex K\"ahler manifolds with ample canonical line bundle such that the holomorphic sectional curvature is negative semi-definite and vanishes along high-dimensional linear subspaces in every tangent space. The main result of this note is an upper bound for the dimensions of these subspaces. Due to the holomorphic sectional curvature being a real-valued bihomogeneous polynomial of bidegree $(2,2)$ on every tangent space, the proof is based on making a connection with the work of D'Angelo on complex subvarieties of real algebraic varieties and the decomposition of polynomials into differences of squares. Our bound involves an invariant that we call the holomorphic sectional curvature square decomposition length, and our arguments work as long as the holomorphic sectional curvature is semi-definite, be it negative or positive.

On positive semi-definite holomorphic sectional curvature with many zeroes

We establish the existence of complete K\"ahler metrics of semi-positive holomorphic sectional curvature with many zeroes in an interesting and natural geometric setting. Specifically, we use Calabi's Ansatz in the form due to Koiso-Sakane to produce such metrics on the total space of powers of the tautological line bundles over the projective line. We formulate a general conjecture regarding the compact case and use a product approach to obtain an analogous result in the non-compact case.

A Schmidt-Nochka Theorem for closed subschemes in subgeneral position

In previous work, the authors established a generalized version of Schmidt's subspace theorem for closed subschemes in general position in terms of Seshadri constants. We extend our theorem to weighted sums involving closed subschemes in subgeneral position, providing a joint generalization of Schmidt's theorem with seminal inequalities of Nochka. A key aspect of the proof is the use of a lower bound for Seshadri constants of intersections from algebraic geometry, as well as a generalized Chebyshev inequality. As an application, we extend inequalities of Nochka and Ru-Wong from hyperplanes in $m$-subgeneral position to hypersurfaces in $m$-subgeneral position in projective space, proving a sharp result in dimensions $2$ and $3$, and coming within a factor of $3/2$ of a sharp inequality in all dimensions. We state analogous results in Nevanlinna theory generalizing the Second Main Theorem and Nochka's theorem (Cartan's conjecture).

On the degeneracy of integral points and entire curves in the complement of nef effective divisors

As a consequence of our recently established generalized Schmidt's subspace theorem for closed subschemes in general position, we prove a degeneracy theorem for integral points on the complement of a union of nef effective divisors. A novel aspect of our result is the attainment of a strong degeneracy conclusion (arithmetic quasi-hyperbolicity) under weak positivity assumptions on the divisors. The proof hinges on applying our recent theorem with a well-situated ample divisor realizing a certain lexicographical minimax. We also explore the connections with earlier work by other authors and make a Conjecture regarding (optimal) bounds for the numbers of divisors necessary, including consideration of the question of arithmetic hyperbolicity. Under the standard correspondence between statements in Diophantine approximation and Nevanlinna theory, one obtains analogous degeneration statements for entire curves.

A generalized Schmidt subspace theorem for closed subschemes

We prove a generalized version of Schmidt's subspace theorem for closed subschemes in general position in terms of suitably defined Seshadri constants with respect to a fixed ample divisor. Our proof builds on previous work by Evertse and Ferretti, Corvaja and Zannier, and others, and uses standard techniques from algebraic geometry such as notions of positivity, blowing-ups and direct image sheaves. As an application, we recover a higher-dimensional Diophantine approximation theorem of K.F. Roth-type due to D. McKinnon and M. Roth with a significantly shortened proof, while simultaneously extending the scope of the use of Seshadri constants in this context in a natural way.

Hermitian Metrics of Positive Holomorphic Sectional Curvature on Fibrations

The main result of this note essentially is that if the base and fibers of a compact fibration carry Hermitian metrics of positive holomorphic sectional curvature, then so does the total space of the fibration. The proof is based on the use of a warped product metric as in the work by Cheung in case of negative holomorphic sectional curvature, but differs in certain key aspects, e.g., in that it does not use the subadditivity property for holomorphic sectional curvature due to Grauert-Reckziegel and Wu.

Reduction of manifolds with semi-negative holomorphic sectional curvature

In this note, we continue the investigation of a projective K\"ahler manifold $M$ of semi-negative holomorphic sectional curvature $H$. We introduce a new differential geometric numerical rank invariant which measures the number of linearly independent {\it truly flat} directions of $H$ in the tangent spaces. We prove that this invariant is bounded above by the nef dimension and bounded below by the numerical Kodaira dimension of $M$. We also prove a splitting theorem for $M$ in terms of the nef dimension and, under some additional hypotheses, in terms of the new rank invariant.

On projectivized vector bundles and positive holomorphic sectional curvature

We generalize a construction of Hitchin to prove that, given any compact K\"ahler manifold $M$ with positive holomorphic sectional curvature and any holomorphic vector bundle $E$ over $M$, the projectivized vector bundle ${\mathbb P}(E)$ admits a K\"ahler metric with positive holomorphic sectional curvature.

On projective K\"ahler manifolds of partially positive curvature and rational connectedness

In a previous paper, we proved that a projective K\"ahler manifold of positive total scalar curvature is uniruled. At the other end of the spectrum, it is a well-known theorem of Campana and Koll\'ar-Miyaoka-Mori that a projective K\"ahler manifold of positive Ricci curvature is rationally connected. In the present work, we investigate the intermediate notion of $k$-positive Ricci curvature and prove that for a projective $n$-dimensional K\"ahler manifold of $k$-positive Ricci curvature the MRC fibration has generic fibers of dimension at least $n-k+1$. We also establish an analogous result for projective K\"ahler manifolds of semi-positive holomorphic sectional curvature based on an invariant which records the largest codimension of maximal subspaces in the tangent spaces on which the holomorphic sectional curvature vanishes. In particular, the latter result confirms a conjecture of S.-T. Yau in the projective case.

Optimal pinching for the holomorphic sectional curvature of Hitchin's metrics on Hirzebruch surfaces

The main result of this note is that, for each $n\in \{1,2,3,\ldots\}$, there exists a Hodge metric on the $n$-th Hirzebruch surface whose positive holomorphic sectional curvature is $\frac{1}{(1+2n)^2}$-pinched. The type of metric under consideration was first studied by Hitchin in this context. In order to address the case $n=0$, we prove a general result on the pinching of the holomorphic sectional curvature of the product metric on the product of two Hermitian manifolds $M$ and $N$ of positive holomorphic sectional curvature.

K\"ahler manifolds of semi-negative holomorphic sectional curvature

In an earlier work, we investigated some consequences of the existence of a K\"ahler metric of negative holomorphic sectional curvature on a projective manifold. In the present work, we extend our results to the case of semi-negative (i.e., non-positive) holomorphic sectional curvature. In doing so, we define a new invariant that records the largest codimension of maximal subspaces in the tangent spaces on which the holomorphic sectional curvature vanishes. Using this invariant, we establish lower bounds for the nef dimension and, under certain additional assumptions, for the Kodaira dimension of the manifold. In dimension two, a precise structure theorem is obtained.

Scalar curvature and uniruledness on projective manifolds

It is a basic tenet in complex geometry that {\it negative} curvature corresponds, in a suitable sense, to the absence of rational curves on, say, a complex projective manifold, while {\it positive} curvature corresponds to the abundance of rational curves. In this spirit, we prove in this note that a projective manifold $M$ with a Kähler metric with positive total scalar curvature is uniruled, which is equivalent to every point of $M$ being contained in a rational curve. We also prove that if $M$ possesses a Kähler metric of total scalar curvature equal to zero, then either $M$ is uniruled or its canonical line bundle is torsion. The proof of the latter theorem is partially based on the observation that if $M$ is not uniruled, then the total scalar curvatures of all Kähler metrics on $M$ must have the same sign, which is either zero or negative.

On uniformly effective birationality and the Shafarevich Conjecture over curves

Let $B$ be a smooth projective curve of genus $g$, and $S \subset B$ be a finite subset of cardinality $s$. We give an effective upper bound on the number of deformation types of admissible families of canonically polarized manifolds of dimension $n$ with canonical volume $v$ over $B$ with prescribed degeneracy locus $S$. The effective bound only depends on the invariants $g, s, n$ and $v$. The key new ingredient which allows for this kind of result is a careful study of effective birationality for families of canonically polarized manifolds.

Uniformly effective boundedness of Shafarevich Conjecture-type for families of canonically polarized manifolds

The main result of this note is an effective uniform bound for the number of deformation types of certain nonisotrivial families of canonically polarized manifolds. It extends the author's earlier such bound for the classical Shafarevich Conjecture over function fields to the case of higher dimensional fibers, but without the disadvantageous iterated use of Chow or Hilbert varieties that was the core of the proofs in the earlier approaches.

On essentially large divisors

Motivated by the classical Theorems of Picard and Siegel and their generalizations, we define the notion of an {\it essentially large} effective divisor and derive some of its geometric and arithmetic consequences. We then prove that on a nonsingular projective variety $X$ whose codimension is no greater than $\dim X-2$, every effective divisor with $\dim X +2$ or more components in general position is essentially large.

On the canonical line bundle and negative holomorphic sectional curvature

We prove that a smooth complex projective threefold with a Kähler metric of negative holomorphic sectional curvature has ample canonical line bundle. In dimensions greater than three, we prove that, under equal assumptions, the nef dimension of the canonical line bundle is maximal. With certain additional assumptions, ampleness is again obtained. The methods used come from both complex differential geometry and complex algebraic geometry.

Existence of Kähler-Einstein metrics and multiplier ideal sheaves on del Pezzo surfaces

We apply Nadel's method of multiplier ideal sheaves to show that every complex del Pezzo surface of degree at most six whose automorphism group acts without fixed points has a Kähler-Einstein metric. In particular, all del Pezzo surfaces of degree $4,5$, or $6$ and certain special del Pezzo surfaces of lower degree are shown to have a Kähler-Einstein metric. This result is not new, but the proofs given in the present paper are less involved than earlier ones by Siu, Tian and Tian-Yau.
