Global well-posedness for a time-fractional doubly nonlinear equation

We consider a time-fractional parabolic equation of doubly nonlinear type, featuring nonlinear terms both inside and outside the differential operator in time. The main nonlinearities are maximal monotone graphs, without restrictions on the growth. In addition, a Lipschitz continuous perturbation is considered. The existence of global weak solutions is obtained via a regularization and Galerkin approximation method. Uniqueness is also discussed under some additional assumptions.

Time-fractional gradient flows for nonconvex energies in Hilbert spaces

This article is devoted to presenting an abstract theory on time-fractional gradient flows for nonconvex energy functionals in Hilbert spaces. Main results consist of local and global in time existence of (continuous) strong solutions to time-fractional evolution equations governed by the difference of two subdifferential operators in Hilbert spaces. To prove these results, fractional chain-rule formulae, a Lipschitz perturbation theory for convex gradient flows and Gronwall-type lemmas for nonlinear Volterra integral inequalities are developed. They also play a crucial role to cope with the lack of continuity (in time) of energies due to the subdiffusive nature of the issue. Moreover, the abstract theory is applied to the Cauchy-Dirichlet problem for some $p$-Laplace subdiffusion equations with blow-up terms complying with the so-called Sobolev (sub)critical growth condition.

Existence of distributional solutions to degenerate elliptic systems for locally integrable forcing

This paper presents an existence result and maximal regularity estimates for distributional solutions to degenerate/singular elliptic systems of $p$-Laplacian type with absorption and (prescribed) locally integrable forcing posed in (possibly unbounded) Lipschitz domains. In particular, the forcing terms may not belong to the dual space of an energy space, e.g., $W^{1,p}_{\rm loc}$, which is necessary for the existence of weak (or energy) solutions of class $W^{1,p}_{\rm loc}$. The method of a proof relies on both local energy estimates and a relative truncation technique developed by Bul\'{i}\v{c}ek and Schwarzacher (Calc. Var. PDEs in 2016), where the bounded domain case is studied for (globally) integrable forcing.

Weighted Energy-Dissipation approach to semilinear gradient flows with state-dependent dissipation

We investigate the Weighted Energy-Dissipation variational approach to semilinear gradient flows with state-dependent dissipation. A family of parameter-dependent functionals defined over entire trajectories is introduced and proved to admit global minimizers. These global minimizers correspond to solutions of elliptic-in-time regularizations of the limiting causal problem. By passing to the limit in the parameter we prove that such global minimizers converge, up to subsequences, to a solution of the gradient flow.

Energy solutions of the Cauchy-Dirichlet problem for fractional nonlinear diffusion equations

The present paper is concerned with the Cauchy-Dirichlet problem for fractional (and non-fractional) nonlinear diffusion equations posed in bounded domains. Main results consist of well-posedness in an energy class with no sign restriction and convergence of such (possibly sign-changing) energy solutions to asymptotic profiles after a proper rescaling. They will be proved in a variational scheme only, without any use of semigroup theories nor classical quasilinear parabolic theories. Proofs are self-contained and performed in a totally unified fashion for both fractional and non-fractional cases as well as for both porous medium and fast diffusion cases.

Weighted Inertia-Dissipation-Energy approach to doubly nonlinear wave equations

We discuss a variational approach to doubly nonlinear wave equations of the form $\rho u_{tt} + g (u_t) - \Delta u + f (u)=0$. This approach hinges on the minimization of a parameter-dependent family of uniformly convex functionals over entire trajectories, namely the so-called Weighted Inertia-Dissipation-Energy (WIDE) functionals. We prove that the WIDE functionals admit minimizers and that the corresponding Euler-Lagrange system is solvable in the strong sense. Moreover, we check that the parameter-dependent minimizers converge, up to subsequences, to a solution of the target doubly nonlinear wave equation as the parameter goes to $0$. The analysis relies on specific estimates on the WIDE minimizers, on the decomposition of the subdifferential of the WIDE functional, and on the identification of the nonlinearities in the limit. Eventually, we investigate the viscous limit $\rho \to 0$, both at the functional level and on that of the equation.

Fractional Dissipative PDEs

In this chapter we provide an introduction to fractional dissipative partial differential equations (PDEs) with a focus on trying to understand their dynamics. The class of PDEs we focus on are reaction-diffusion equations but we also provide an outlook on closely related classes of PDEs. To simplify the exposition, we only discuss the cases of fractional time derivatives and fractional space derivatives in the PDE separately. As our main tools, we describe analytical as well as numerical methods, which are generically necessary to study nonlinear dynamics. We start with the analytical study of steady states and local linear stability for fractional time derivatives. Then we extend this view to a global perspective and consider time-fractional PDEs and gradient flows. Next, we continue to steady states, linear stability analysis and bifurcations for space-fractional PDEs. As a final analytical consideration we discuss existence and stability of traveling waves for space-fractional PDEs. In the last parts, we provide numerical discretization schemes for fractional (dissipative) PDEs and we utilize these techniques within numerical continuation in applied examples of fractional reaction-diffusion PDEs. We conclude with a brief summary and outlook on open questions in the field.

Optimal rate of convergence to nondegenerate asymptotic profiles for fast diffusion in domains

This paper is concerned with the Cauchy-Dirichlet problem for fast diffusion equations posed in bounded domains, where every energy solution vanishes in finite time and a suitably rescaled solution converges to an asymptotic profile. Bonforte and Figalli (CPAM, 2021) first proved an exponential convergence to nondegenerate positive asymptotic profiles for nonnegative rescaled solutions in a weighted $L^2$ norm for smooth bounded domains by developing a nonlinear entropy method. However, the optimality of the rate remains open to question. In the present paper, their result is fully extended to possibly sign-changing asymptotic profiles as well as general bounded domains by improving an energy method along with a quantitative gradient inequality developed by the first author (ARMA, 2023). Moreover, a (quantitative) exponential stability result for least-energy asymptotic profiles follows as a corollary, and it is further employed to prove the optimality of the exponential rate.

On a class of doubly nonlinear evolution equations in Musielak-Orlicz spaces

This paper is concerned with a parabolic evolution equation of the form $A(u_t) + B(u) = f$, settled in a smooth bounded domain of ${\bf R}^d$, $d \geq 1$, and complemented with the initial conditions and with (for simplicity) homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. Here, $-B$ stands for a diffusion operator, possibly nonlinear, which may range in a very wide class, including the Laplacian, the $m$-Laplacian for suitable $m\in(1,\infty)$), the "variable-exponent" $m(x)$-Laplacian, or even some fractional order operators. The operator $A$ is assumed to be in the form $[A(v)](x, t) = α(x, v(x, t))$ with $α$ being measurable in $x$ and maximal monotone in $v$. The main results are devoted to proving existence of weak solutions for a wide class of functions $α$ that extends the setting considered in previous results related to the variable exponent case where $α(x, v) = |v(x)|^{p(x)-2} v(x)$. To this end, a theory of subdifferential operators will be established in Musielak-Orlicz spaces satisfying structure conditions of the so-called $Δ_2$-type and a framework for approximating maximal monotone operators acting in that class of spaces will also be developed. Such a theory is then applied to provide an existence result for a specific equation, but it may have an independent interest in itself. Finally, the existence result is illustrated by presenting a number of specific equations (and, correspondingly, of operators $A$, $B$) to which the result can be applied.

Evolution equations with complete irreversibility and energy conservation

This paper is concerned with the initial-boundary value problem for an evolutionary variational inequality complying with three intrinsic properties: complete irreversibility, unilateral equilibrium of an energy and an energy conservation law, which cannot generally be realized in dissipative systems such as standard gradient flows. Main results consist of well-posedness in a strong formulation, qualitative properties of strong solutions (i.e., comparison principle and the three properties mentioned above) and long-time dynamics of strong solutions (more precisely, convergence to an equilibrium). The well-posedness will be proved based on a minimizing movement scheme without parabolic regularization, which will also play a crucial role for proving qualitative and asymptotic properties of strong solutions. Moreover, the variational inequality under consideration will be characterized as a singular limit of some (generalized) gradient flows.

Rates of convergence to non-degenerate asymptotic profiles for fast diffusion via energy methods

This paper is concerned with a quantitative analysis of asymptotic behaviors of (possibly sign-changing) solutions to the Cauchy-Dirichlet problem for the fast diffusion equation posed on bounded domains with Sobolev subcritical exponents. More precisely, rates of convergence to non-degenerate asymptotic profiles will be revealed via an energy method. The sharp rate of convergence to \emph{positive} ones was recently discussed by Bonforte and Figalli (2021, CPAM) based on an entropy method. An alternative proof for their result will also be provided. Furthermore, dynamics of fast diffusion flows with changing signs will be discussed more specifically under concrete settings; in particular, exponential stability of some sign-changing asymptotic profiles will be proved in dumbbell domains for initial data with certain symmetry.

Space-time homogenization problems for porous medium equations with nonnegative initial data

This paper concerns a space-time homogenization limit of nonnegative weak solutions to porous medium equations. In particular, the so-called homogenized matrix will be characterized in terms of solutions to cell problems, which drastically vary in a scaling parameter $r > 0$. A similar problem has already been studied in [1], where the growth of the power nonlinearity is strictly restricted due to some substantial obstacles. In the present paper, such obstacles will be overcome by developing local uniform estimates for the gradients of nonnegative weak solutions.

General framework to construct local-energy solutions of nonlinear diffusion equations for growing initial data

This paper presents an integrated framework to construct local-energy solutions to fairly general nonlinear diffusion equations for initial data growing at infinity under suitable assumptions on local-energy estimates for approximate solutions. A delicate issue for constructing local-energy solutions resides in the identification of weak limits of nonlinear terms for approximate solutions in a limiting procedure. Indeed, such an identification process often needs the maximal monotonicity of nonlinear elliptic operators (involved in the doubly-nonlinear equations) as well as uniform estimates for approximate solutions; however, even the monotonicity is violated due to a localization of the equations, which is also necessary to derive local-energy estimates for approximate solutions. In the present paper, such an inconsistency will be systematically overcome by reducing the original equation to a localized one, where a (no longer monotone) localized elliptic operator will be decomposed into the sum of a maximal monotone one and a perturbation, and by integrating all the other relevant processes. Furthermore, the general framework developed in the present paper will also be applied to the Finsler porous medium and fast diffusion equations, which are variants of the classical PME and FDE and also classified as a doubly-nonlinear equation.

Space-time homogenization for nonlinear diffusion

The present paper is concerned with a space-time homogenization problem for nonlinear diffusion equations with periodically oscillating (in space and time) coefficients. Main results consist of a homogenization theorem (i.e., convergence of solutions as the period of oscillation goes to zero) as well as a characterization of homogenized equations. In particular, homogenized matrices are described in terms of solutions to cell-problems, which have different forms depending on the log-ratio of the spatial and temporal periods of the coefficients. At a critical ratio, the cell problem turns out to be a parabolic equation in microscopic variables (as in linear diffusion) and also involves the limit of solutions, which is a function of macroscopic variables. The latter feature stems from the nonlinearity of the equation, and moreover, some strong interplay between microscopic and macroscopic structures can be explicitly seen for the nonlinear diffusion. As for the other ratios, the cell problems are always elliptic (in micro-variable only) and do not involve any macroscopic variables, and hence, micro- and macrostructures are weakly interacting each other. Proofs of the main results are based on the two-scale convergence theory (for space-time homogenization). Furthermore, finer asymptotics of gradients, diffusion fluxes and time-derivatives with certain corrector terms will be provided, and a qualitative analysis on homogenized matrices will be also performed.

Local well-posedness for Frémond's model of complete damage in elastic solids

We consider a model for the evolution of damage in elastic materials originally proposed by Michel Frémond. For the corresponding PDE system we prove existence and uniqueness of a local in time strong solution. The main novelty of our result stands in the fact that, differently from previous contributions, we assume no occurrence of any type of regularizing terms.

Traveling wave dynamics for Allen-Cahn equations with strong irreversibility

Constrained gradient flows are studied in fracture mechanics to describe strongly irreversible (or unidirectional) evolution of cracks. The present paper is devoted to a study on the long-time behavior of non-compact orbits of such constrained gradient flows. More precisely, traveling wave dynamics for a one-dimensional fully nonlinear Allen-Cahn type equation involving the positive-part function is considered. Main results of the paper consist of a construction of a one-parameter family of degenerate traveling wave solutions (even identified when coinciding up to translation) and exponential stability of such traveling wave solutions with some basin of attraction, although they are unstable in a usual sense.

Porous medium equation with a blow-up nonlinearity and a non-decreasing constraint

The final goal of this paper is to prove existence of local (strong) solutions to a (fully nonlinear) porous medium equation with blow-up term and nondecreasing constraint. To this end, the equation, arising in the context of Damage Mechanics, is reformulated as a mixed form of two different types of doubly nonlinear evolution equations. Global (in time) solutions to some approximate problems are constructed by performing a time discretization argument and by taking advantage of energy techniques based on specific structures of the equation. Moreover, a variational comparison principle for (possibly non-unique) approximate solutions is established and it also enables us to obtain a local solution as a limit of approximate ones.

Allen-Cahn equation with strong irreversibility

This paper is concerned with a fully nonlinear variant of the Allen-Cahn equation with strong irreversibility, where each solution is constrained to be non-decreasing in time. Main purposes of the paper are to prove the well-posedness, smoothing effect and comparison principle, to provide an equivalent reformulation of the equation as a parabolic obstacle problem and to reveal long-time behaviors of solutions. More precisely, by deriving \emph{partial} energy-dissipation estimates, a global attractor is constructed in a metric setting, and it is also proved that each solution $u(x,t)$ converges to a solution of an elliptic obstacle problem as $t \to +\infty$.
