Top Quark Production from Black Holes at the CERN LHC

LHC is expected to be a top quark factory. If the fundamental Planck scale is near a TeV, then we also expect the top quarks to be produced from black holes via Hawking radiation. In this paper we calculate the cross sections for top quark production from black holes at the LHC and compare it with the direct top quark cross section via parton fusion processes at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO). We find that the top quark production from black holes can be larger or smaller than the pQCD predictions at NNLO depending upon the Planck mass and black hole mass. Hence the observation of very high rates for massive particle production (top quarks, higgs or supersymmetry) at the LHC may be an useful signature for black hole production.

Schwinger Mechanism for Gluon Pair Production in the Presence of Arbitrary Time Dependent Chromo-Electric Field

We study Schwinger mechanism for gluon pair production in the presence of arbitrary time-dependent chromo-electric background field $E^a(t)$ with arbitrary color index $a$=1,2,...8 in SU(3) by directly evaluating the path integral. We obtain an exact expression for the probability of non-perturbative gluon pair production per unit time per unit volume and per unit transverse momentum $\frac{dW}{d^4x d^2p_T}$ from arbitrary $E^a(t)$. We show that the tadpole (or single gluon) effective action does not contribute to the non-perturbative gluon pair production rate $\frac{dW}{d^4x d^2p_T}$. We find that the exact result for non-perturbative gluon pair production is independent of all the time derivatives $\frac{d^nE^a(t)}{dt^n}$ where $n=1,2,....\infty$ and has the same functional dependence on two casimir invariants $[E^a(t)E^a(t)]$ and $[d_{abc}E^a(t)E^b(t)E^c(t)]^2$ as the constant chromo-electric field $E^a$ result with the replacement: $E^a \to E^a(t)$. This result may be relevant to study the production of a non-perturbative quark-gluon plasma at RHIC and LHC.

Color Transfer Enhancement for Heavy Quarkonium Production

We study the transfer of color between a heavy quark pair and an unpaired heavy quark or antiquark moving at a nonrelativistic velocity with respect to the pair. We find that the open heavy quark or antiquark can catalyze the transformation of the pair from octet representation at short distances to singlet at long distances. This process is infrared sensitive in general, and we exhibit double poles in dimensional regularization at next-to-next-to-leading order in the transition probability. Because of their dependence on kinematic variables, these poles cannot be matched to the non-perturbative matrix elements of effective field theories based on a single heavy quark pair.

Gauge-Invariant Quantities Characterizing Gauge Fields in Chromodynamics

We calculate Lorentz-invariant and gauge-invariant quantities characterizing the product $\sum_a D_R(T^a) F^a_{μν}$, where $D_R(T^a)$ denotes the matrix for the generator $T^a$ in the representation $R=$ fundamental and adjoint, for color SU(3). We also present analogous results for an SU(2) gauge theory.

Color Transfer in Associated Heavy-Quarkonium Production

We study the production of heavy quarkonium in association with an additional heavy pair. We argue that important contributions may come from phase space regions where three heavy fermions are separated by relative velocities much lower than the speed of light, and to which standard effective field theories do not apply. In this region, infrared sensitive color exchange is specific to the presence of the unpaired (anti)quark. This effect vanishes as the motion of the additional particle becomes relativistic with respect to the pair, and is completely absent for massless quarks and gluons in the final state.

Schwinger Mechanism for Fermion Pair Production in the Presence of Arbitrary Time Dependent Background Electric Field

We study the Schwinger mechanism for the pair production of fermions in the presence of an arbitrary time-dependent background electric field E(t) by directly evaluating the path integral. We obtain an exact non-perturbative result for the probability of fermion-antifermion pair production per unit time per unit volume per unit transverse momentum (of the fermion or antifermion) from the arbitrary time dependent electric field E(t) via Schwinger mechanism. We find that the exact non-perturbative result is independent of all the time derivatives d^nE(t)/dt^n, where n=1,2,....\infty. This result has the same functional dependence on E as the Schwinger's constant electric field E result with the replacement: E -> E(t).

Schwinger Mechanism in the Presence of Arbitrary Time Dependent Background Electric Field

We study, for the first time, the Schwinger mechanism for the pair production of charged scalars in the presence of an arbitrary time-dependent background electric field E(t) by by directly evaluating the path integral. We obtain an exact non-perturbative result for the probability of charged scalar particle-antiparticle pair production per unit time per unit volume per unit transverse momentum (of the particle or antiparticle) from the arbitrary time dependent electric field E(t). We find that the exact non-perturbative result is independent of all the time derivatives d^nE(t)/dt^n, where n=1,2,....\infty. This result has the same functional dependence on E as the constant electric field E result with the replacement: E -> E(t).

NRQCD Factorization and Velocity-dependence of NNLO Poles in Heavy Quarkonium Production

We study the transition of a heavy quark pair from octet to singlet color configurations at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in heavy quarkonium production. We show that the infrared singularities in this process are consistent with NRQCD factorization to all orders in the heavy quark relative velocity v. This factorization requires the gauge-completed matrix elements that we introduced previously to prove NNLO factorization to order v ^2.

Higgs Boson Production from Black Holes at the LHC

If the fundamental Planck scale is near a TeV, then TeV scale black holes should be produced in proton-proton collisions at the LHC where \sqrt{s} = 14 TeV. As the temperature of the black holes can be ~ 1 TeV we also expect production of Higgs bosons from them via Hawking radiation. This is a different production mode for the Higgs boson, which would normally be produced via direct pQCD parton fusion processes. In this paper we compare total cross sections and transverse momentum distributions dσ/dp_T for Higgs production from black holes at the LHC with those from direct parton fusion processes at next-to-next-to-leading order and next-to-leading order respectively. We find that the Higgs production from black holes can be larger or smaller than the direct pQCD production depending upon the Planck mass and black hole mass. We also find that dσ/dp_T of Higgs production from black holes increases as a function of p_T which is in sharp contrast with the pQCD predictions where dσ/dp_T decreases so we suggest that the measurement of an increase in dσ/dp_T as p_T increases for Higgs (or any other heavy particle) production can be a useful signature for black holes at the LHC.

Non-Perturbative Gluon pair production from a Constant Chromo-Electric Field via the Schwinger Mechanism in Arbitrary Gauge

We study the non-perturbative production of gluon pairs from a constant SU(3) chromo-electric background field via the Schwinger mechanism. We fix the covariant background gauge with an arbitrary gauge parameter α. We determine the transverse momentum distribution of the gluons, as well as the total probability of creating pairs per unit space time volume. We find that the result is independent of the covariant gauge parameter αused to define arbitrary covariant background gauges. We find that our non-perturbative result is both gauge invariant and gauge parameter αindependent.

Fragmentation, NRQCD and Factorization in Heavy Quarkonium Production

We discuss factorization in heavy quarkonium production in high energy collisions using NRQCD. Infrared divergences at NNLO are not matched by conventional NRQCD matrix elements. However, we show that gauge invariance and factorization require that conventional NRQCD production matrix elements be modified to include Wilson lines or non-abelian gauge links. With this modification NRQCD factorization for heavy quarkonium production is restored at NNLO.

Non-Perturbative Quark-Antiquark Production From a Constant Chromo-Electric Field via the Schwinger Mechanism

We obtain an exact result for the non-perturbative quark (antiquark) production rate and its p_T distribution from a constant SU(3) chromo-electric field E^a with arbitary color index $a$ by directly evaluating the path integral. Unlike the WKB tunneling result, which depends only on one gauge invariant quantity |E|, the strength of the chromo-electric field, we find that the exact result for the p_T distribution for quark (antiquark) production rate depends on two independent Casimir (gauge) invariants, E^aE^a and [d_{abc}E^aE^bE^c]^2.

We study inclusive heavy quarkonium production with definite polarizations in polarized proton-proton collisions using the non-relativistic QCD color-octet mechanism. We present results for rapidity distributions of cross sections and spin asymmetries for the production of J/psi and psi' with specific polarizations in polarized p-p collisions at \sqrt s = 200 GeV and 500 GeV at the RHIC within the PHENIX detector acceptance range.

Fragmentation, NRQCD and NNLO Factorization Analysis in Heavy Quarkonium Production

We discuss heavy quarkonium production through parton fragmentation, including a review of arguments for the factorization of high-p_T particles into fragmentation functions for hadronic initial states. We investigate the further factorization of fragmentation functions in the NRQCD formalism, and argue that this requires a modification of NRQCD octet production matrix elements to include nonabelian phases, which makes them gauge invariant. We describe the calculation of uncanceled infrared divergences in fragmentation functions that must be factorized at NNLO, and verify that they are absorbed into the new, gauge invariant matrix elements.

Soft-Gluon Production Due to a Gluon Loop in a Constant Chromo-Electric Background Field

We obtain an exact result for the soft gluon production and its p_T distribution due to a gluon loop in a constant chromo-electric background field E^a with arbitrary color. Unlike Schwinger's result for e^+e^- pair production in QED which depends only on one gauge invariant quantity, the Electric field E, we find that the p_T distribution of the gluons depend on two gauge invariant quantities, E^aE^a and [d_{abc}E^aE^bE^c]^2.

Fragmentation, Factorization and Infrared Poles in Heavy Quarkonium Production

We explore the role of soft gluon exchange in heavy quarkonium production at large transverse momentum. We find uncanceled infrared poles at NNLO that are not matched by conventional NRQCD matrix elements. We show, however, that gauge invariance and factorization require that conventional NRQCD production operators be modified to include nonabelian phases or Wilson lines. With appropriately modified operators, factorization is restored at NNLO. We also argue that, in the absence of special cancellations, infrared poles at yet higher orders may require the inclusion of additional nonlocal operators, not present in the NRQCD expansion in relative veloctiy.

SUSY Production From TeV Scale Blackhole at LHC

If the fundamental Planck scale is near a TeV, then we should expect to see TeV scale black holes at the LHC. Similarly, if the scale of supersymmetry breaking is sufficiently low, then we might expect to see light supersymmetric particles in the next generation of colliders. If the mass of the supersymmetric particle is of order a TeV and is comparable to the temperature of a typical TeV scale black hole, then such sparticles will be copiously produced via Hawking radiation: The black hole will act as a resonance for sparticles, among other things. In this paper we compared various signatures for SUSY production at LHC, and we contrasted the situation where the sparticles are produced directly via parton fusion processes with the situation where they are produced indirectly through black hole resonances. We found that black hole resonances provide a larger source for heavy mass SUSY (squark and gluino) production than the direct pQCD-SUSY production via parton fusion processes depending on the values of the Planck mass and blackhole mass. Hence black hole production at LHC may indirectly act as a dominant channel for SUSY production. We also found that the differential cross section dσ/dp_t for SUSY production increases as a function of the p_t (up to p_t equal to about 1 TeV or more) of the SUSY particles (squarks and gluinos), which is in sharp contrast with the pQCD predictions where the differential cross section dσ/dp_t decreases as p_t increases for high p_t about 1 TeV or higher. This is a feature for any particle emission from TeV scale blackhole as long as the temperature of the blackhole is very high (~ TeV). Hence measurement of increase of dσ/dp_t with p_t for p_t up to about 1 TeV or higher for final state particles might be a useful signature for blackhole production at LHC.

J/ΨProduction in pp Collisions at \sqrt s = 200 GeV at RHIC

We study J/ψproduction in pp collisions at RHIC within the PHENIX detector acceptance range using the color singlet and color octet mechanism which are based on pQCD and NRQCD. Here we show that the color octet mechanism reproduces the RHIC data for J/ψproduction in pp collisions with respect to the p_T distribution, the rapidity distribution and the total cross section at \sqrt s = 200 GeV. The color singlet mechanism leads to a relatively small contribution to the total cross section when compared to the octet contribution.
