Hyperchaos in a Magnetic Nanodisk Driven by Ferromagnetic Resonance

We investigate the chaotic dynamics driven in the nonlinear regime of ferromagnetic resonance of an out-of-plane magnetized nanodisk in detail. By combining extensive micromagnetic simulations with time-series analysis across the control parameter space, we map the topological transitions from stable periodic orbits to strange attractors and quantify the dynamical complexity. Despite the simplicity of our nanoscale system, we evidence that it can exhibit hyperchaotic dynamics with up to three positive Lyapunov exponents in vast regions of the control plane accessible to experimental studies. Using a mode projection technique, we unveil that the generated complexity is related to the number of quantized spin-wave modes participating in the dynamics. Our findings establish magnon-spintronic nanodevices as versatile entropy sources for unconventional processing of information.

Nonlinear interaction theory for parametrically-excited spin-wave modes in confined micromagnetic systems

We present a general theoretical approach for the quantitative description of parametric excitation of spin-wave modes in confined micromagnetic systems. This type of problem belongs to a broader class of nonlinear modal dynamics that arise across many areas of physics and engineering. The ferromagnetic sample is driven by parallel pumping with an external applied magnetic field having two tones at different frequencies, which are able to trigger parametric instability of two resonant modes. The two excited spin-wave modes interact in a strongly nonlinear fashion giving rise to quasiperiodicity, hysteresis and non-commutativity of steady-state oscillation regimes. To disentangle such a complex variety of dynamics, we develop a reduced-order model based on magnetization normal modes that is amenable of appropriate analytical treatment, leading to quantitative description of parametric instability thresholds, post-instability steady-state amplitude saturation and complete determination of phase diagrams for steady-state oscillation regimes. We have performed validation of the theory using numerical simulations. The phase diagrams allow to predict and explain all the features of the nonlinear interaction between the parametrically-excited spin-wave modes and can be directly compared with experimental results.

The Orbital Angular Momentum of Azimuthal Spin-Waves

In the context of a growing interdisciplinary interest in the angular momentum of wave fields, the spin-wave case has yet to be fully explored, with the extensively studied notion of spin transport being only part of the broader picture. Here we report experimental evidence for magnon orbital angular momentum, demonstrating that the mode exhibits rotation rather than remaining stationary. This conclusion is drawn from observations of the lifted degeneracy of waves with counter-rotating wave fronts. This requires an unambiguous formulation of spin and orbital angular momenta for spin waves, which we provide in full generality based on a systematic application of quantum field theory techniques. The results unequivocally establish magnetic dipole-dipole interactions as a magnetic-field controllable spin-orbit interaction for magnons. Our findings open a new research direction, leveraging the spectroscopic readability of angular momentum for azimuthal spin waves and other related systems.

Field Theory of Linear Spin-Waves in Finite Textured Ferromagnets

In the context of an ever-expanding experimental and theoretical interest in the magnetization dynamics of mesoscopic magnetic structures, both in the classical and quantum regimes, we formulate a low energy field theory for the linear spin-waves in finite and textured ferromagnets and we perform its constrained canonical quantization. The introduction of a manifestly gauge invariant Lagrangian enables a straightforward application of the Noether's theorem. Taking advantage of this in the context of a broad class of axisymmetric ferromagnets of special conceptual and experimental relevance, a general expression of the conserved and quantized spin-wave total angular momentum is rigorously derived, while separate conservation and quantization of its orbital and spin components are established for a more restricted class of uniaxial exchange ferromagnets. Further particularizing this general framework to the case of axially saturated magnetic thin disks, we develop a semi-analytic theory of the low frequency part of the exchange-dipole azimuthal spin wave spectrum, providing a powerful theoretical platform for the analysis and interpretation of magnetic resonance experiments on magnetic microdots as further demonstrated in a joint paper [arxiv The Orbital Angular Momentum of Azimuthal Spin-Waves]

Nonlinear mode interactions under parametric excitation in a YIG microdisk

A pair of quantized spin-wave modes is driven by two-tone parallel pumping in a YIG microdisk. The nonlinear dynamics is experimentally investigated by probing the resulting steady state, which is found to critically depend on the chosen pair of modes, the detuning between the pump frequencies and the modes parametric resonance, as well as the temporal sequence of the two rf tones. A general theory of parametric excitation in confined structures based on magnetization normal modes is developed and quantitatively accounts for the observed dependence and non-commutative behaviors, which emerge from the interplay between the self and mutual nonlinear frequency shifts of the spin-wave modes. Owing to its high degree of external controllability and scalability to larger sets of modes, this dynamical system provides a model platform for exploring nonlinear phenomena and a promising route toward rf driven state mapping relevant to neuromorphic and unconventional computing.

Self-modulation instability in high power ferromagnetic resonance of BiYIG nanodisks

We study the high power ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) of perpendicularly magnetized BiYIG nanodisks where the uniaxial anisotropy almost compensates the shape anisotropy. We observe a strong saturation of the averaged magnetization upon moderately increasing the amplitude of the rf field and a broadening of the FMR line towards lower and higher magnetic field. Full micromagnetic simulations reveal that a self-modulation of the dynamic magnetization is responsible of this behavior. To get more insight into this unstable dynamics, it is analysed in terms of normal modes. The number of modes involved is found to rapidly increase above the critical threshold. Still, a normal modes model taking into account only a few of them and their mutual nonlinear couplings allows us to qualitatively reproduce the observed phenomenon. The normal modes analysis and micromagnetic simulations also predict a Suhl-like instability at larger excitation power when it is slowly increased from low values, and bistability. Using two-tone spectroscopy, we directly measure the self-modulation spectrum and provide experimental evidence of bistable dynamics. These findings open some perspectives of using high dimensional dynamics in magnetic nanostructures for unconventional information processing.

Degenerate and non-degenerate parametric excitation in YIG nanostructures

We study experimentally the processes of parametric excitation in microscopic magnetically saturated disks of nanometer-thick Yttrium Iron Garnet. We show that, depending on the relative orientation between the parametric pumping field and the static magnetization, excitation of either degenerate or non-degenerate magnon pairs is possible. In the latter case, which is particularly important for applications associated with the realization of computation in the reciprocal space, a single-frequency pumping can generate pairs of magnons whose frequencies correspond to different eigenmodes of the disk. We show that, depending on the size of the disk and the modes involved, the frequency difference in a pair can vary in the range 0.1-0.8 GHz. We demonstrate that in this system, one can easily realize a practically important situation where several magnon pairs share the same mode. We also observe the simultaneous generation of up to six different modes using a fixed-frequency monochromatic pumping. Our experimental findings are supported by numerical calculations that allow us to unambiguously identify the excited modes. Our results open new possibilities for the implementation of reciprocal-space computing making use of low damping magnetic insulators.

Enhancement of YIG$|$Pt spin conductance by local Joule annealing

We report that Joule heating can be used to enhance the interfacial spin conductivity between a metal and an oxide. We observe that local annealing of the interface at about 550\,K by injecting large current densities ($>10^{12}\text{A/m}^{2}$) into a pristine 7\,nm thick Pt nanostrip evaporated on top of yttrium iron garnet (YIG), can improve the spin transmission up to a factor 3: a result of particular interest for interfacing ultra thin garnet films where strong chemical etching of the surface has to be avoided. The effect is confirmed by different methods: spin Hall magnetoresistance, spin pumping and non-local spin transport. We use it to study the influence of the YIG$|$Pt coupling on the non-linear spin transport properties. We find that the cross-over current from a linear to a non-linear spin transport regime is independent of this coupling, suggesting that the behavior of pure spin currents circulating in the dielectric are mostly governed by the physical properties of the bare YIG film beside the Pt nanostrip.

Short-range Thermal Magnon Diffusion in Magnetic Garnet

Using the spin Seebeck effect (SSE), we study the propagation distance of thermal spin currents inside a magnetic insulator thin film in the short-range regime. We disambiguate spin currents driven by temperature and chemical potential gradients by comparing the SSE signal before and after adding a thermalization capping layer on the same device. We report that the measured spin decay behavior near the heat source is well accounted for by a diffusion model where the magnon diffusion length is in submicron range, \textit{i.e.} two orders of magnitude smaller than previous estimates inferred from the long-range behavior. Our results highlight the caveat in applying a diffusive theory to describe thermal magnon transport, where a single decay length may not capture the behavior on all length scales.

Coherent long-range transfer of angular momentum between magnon Kittel modes by phonons

We report ferromagnetic resonance in the normal configuration of an electrically insulating magnetic bilayer consisting of two yttrium iron garnet (YIG) films epitaxially grown on both sides of a 0.5-mm-thick nonmagnetic gadolinium gallium garnet (GGG) slab. An interference pattern is observed and it is explained as the strong coupling of the magnetization dynamics of the two YIG layers either in phase or out of phase by the standing transverse sound waves, which are excited through a magnetoelastic interaction. This coherent mediation of angular momentum by circularly polarized phonons through a nonmagnetic material over macroscopic distances can be useful for future information technologies.

Selective control of vortex polarities by microwave field in two robustly synchronized spin-torque nano-oscillators

Manipulating operation states of coupled spin-torque nano-oscillators (STNOs), including their synchronization, is essential for applications such as complex oscillator networks. In this work we experimentally demonstrate selective control of two coupled vortex STNOs through microwave-assisted switching of their vortex core polarities. First, the two oscillators are shown to synchronize due to dipolar interaction in a broad frequency range tuned by external biasing field. Coherent output is demonstrated along with strong linewidth reduction. Then, we show individual vortex polarity control of each oscillator, which leads to synchronization/desynchronization due to accompanied frequency shift. Our methods can be easily extended to multiple-element coupled oscillator networks.

Electrical properties of single crystal Yttrium Iron Garnet ultra-thin films at high temperatures

We report a study on the electrical properties of 19 nm thick Yttrium Iron Garnet (YIG) films grown by liquid phase epitaxy. The electrical conductivity and Hall coefficient are measured in the high temperature range [300,400]~K using a Van der Pauw four-point probe technique. We find that the electrical resistivity decreases exponentially with increasing temperature following an activated behavior corresponding to a band-gap of $E_g\approx 2$ eV, indicating that epitaxial YIG ultra-thin films behave as large gap semiconductor, and not as electrical insulator. The resistivity drops to about $5\times 10^3$~$Ω\cdot \text{cm}$ at $T=400$ K. We also infer the Hall mobility, which is found to be positive ($p$-type) at 5 cm$^2$/(V$\cdot$sec) and about independent of temperature. We discuss the consequence for non-local transport experiments performed on YIG at room temperature. These electrical properties are responsible for an offset voltage (independent of the in-plane field direction) whose amplitude, odd in current, grows exponentially with current due to Joule heating. These electrical properties also induce a sensitivity to the perpendicular component of the magnetic field through the Hall effect. In our lateral device, a thermoelectric offset voltage is produced by a temperature gradient along the wire direction proportional to the perpendicular component of the magnetic field (Righi-Leduc effects).

Spin conductance of YIG thin films driven from thermal to subthermal magnons regime by large spin-orbit torque

We report a study on spin conductance in ultra-thin films of Yttrium Iron Garnet (YIG), where spin transport is provided by propagating spin waves, that are generated and detected by direct and inverse spin Hall effects in two Pt wires deposited on top. While at low current the spin conductance is dominated by transport of thermal magnons, at high current, the spin conductance is dominated by low-damping non-equilibrium magnons thermalized near the spectral bottom by magnon-magnon interaction, with consequent a sensitivity to the applied magnetic field and a longer decay length. This picture is supported by microfocus Brillouin Light Scattering spectroscopy.

Probing phase coupling between two spin-torque nano-oscillators with external source

Phase coupling between auto-oscillators is central for achieving coherent responses such as synchronization. Here we present an experimental approach to probe it in the case of two dipolarly coupled spin-torque vortex nano-oscillators using an external microwave field. By phase-locking one oscillator to the microwave field, we observe frequency pulling on the second oscillator. From coupled Thiele equations we show analytically that this frequency pulling results from concerted actions of dipolar and microwave couplings. The analysis allows us to determine the amplitude of dipolar coupling and the phase lag of each oscillator, yielding important information for the implementation of large oscillator networks.

Complete mapping of the spin-wave spectrum in vortex state nano-disk

We report a study on the complete spin-wave spectrum inside a vortex state nano-disk. Transformation of this spectrum is continuously monitored as the nano-disk becomes gradually magnetized by a perpendicular magnetic field and encouters a second order phase transition to the uniformly magnetized state. This reveals the bijective relationship that exists between the eigen-modes in the vortex state with the ones in the saturated state. It is found that the gyrotropic mode can be continuously viewed as a uniform phase precession, which uniquely softens (its frequency vanishes) at the saturation field to transform above into the Kittel mode. By contrast the other spin-wave modes remain finite as a function of the applied field while their character is altered by level anti-crossing.

Detection of the microwave spin pumping using the inverse spin Hall effect

We report electrical detection of the dynamical part of the spin pumping current emitted during ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) using the inverse Spin Hall Effect (ISHE). The experiment is performed on a YIG$|$Pt bilayer. The choice of YIG, a magnetic insulator, ensures that no charge current flows between the two layers and only pure spin current produced by the magnetization dynamics are transferred into the adjacent strong spin-orbit Pt layer via spin pumping. To avoid measuring the parasitic eddy currents induced at the frequency of the microwave source, a resonance at half the frequency is induced using parametric excitation in the parallel geometry. Triggering this nonlinear effect allows to directly detect on a spectrum analyzer the microwave component of the ISHE voltage. Signals as large as 30 $μ$V are measured for precession angles of a couple of degrees. This direct detection provides a novel efficient means to study magnetization dynamics on a very wide frequency range with great sensitivity.
