Recommendations for the Astronomy Graduate Admissions Process

As the AAS Working Group on Graduate Admissions (WGGA) we are sharing brief recommendations for improving and standardizing key elements of the graduate admissions process in astronomy. Most astronomy graduate programs have large areas of overlap in their admissions processes; however, the existing small variations in requirements and mismatches in communication and transparency make admissions more challenging for students and programs alike. To improve this situation, and building on the work presented in the AAS Graduate Admissions Task Force (GATF) report we recommend a few simple and straightforward changes for application content, communication, and timelines. These include an application format that consists of 1) two 500-word recommendation letters, 2) one 1500-word application essay, 3) an applicant CV, and 4) unofficial transcripts; and an admissions timeline that includes effective and transparent communication from programs and encouraging an April 1st "down-select date" for applicants.

The Radial and Vertical Structure of Molecular Gas in the Edge-On Galaxy NGC 4565

We present high-resolution (0.94" $\approx$ 55 pc) ALMA CO(2-1) and 13CO(2-1) observations of the highly inclined (i~87.5 deg) galaxy NGC 4565 covering out to galactocentric radius Rgal > $\pm$ 17 kpc. The combination of sensitivity and resolution enables the detection of CO emission well into the HI-dominated outer disk while isolating individual molecular clouds across the full extent of the galaxy. Although often described as an edge-on Milky Way analog, the molecular gas profile of NGC 4565 has a central gap which is more similar to M31. The 13CO/12CO ratio remains consistent at 0.086 $\pm$ 0.009 from Rgal = 5-13 kpc. Based on fits to position-velocity slices, the molecular disk remains thin, with a FWHM scale height of 79.1 $\pm$ 1.6 pc measured from the vertical intensity profile with little evidence for vertical flaring. Molecular clouds in NGC 4565 show sizes, linewidths, and surface densities consistent with those found in similar environments in PHANGS-ALMA galaxies and in M31. We identify a prominent star-forming complex on the ring-an overdensity of molecular gas we term the East Ring Pileup. This feature hosts a compact, multiwavelength-bright region, which we call the Jewel. Effects of galaxy inclination on molecular cloud radius, velocity dispersion, surface density, and virial parameter appear as second-order effects that are strongest in velocity dispersion. At this resolution, GMCs are preferentially aligned with the disk of the galaxy and horizontally elongated by a factor of~2.

AAS Graduate Admissions Task Force: Final report and recommendations

In March of 2024 the AAS formed our Graduate Admissions Task Force (GATF), asking us to produce recommendations aimed at improving the state of graduate admissions in astronomy. The task was a timely one, as the past decade has seen dramatic shifts that are currently being exacerbated by rapidly-shifting funding and policy challenges. The GATF surveyed recent applicants to astronomy graduate school and admissions leaders in degree-granting graduate programs, held in-depth conversations with select programs, and explored how other fields approach admissions. Based on this work, we have quantified recent changes in the astronomy graduate admissions landscape, addressed mismatches between perception and reality, and identified several key ways to address some of our current challenges. In this report we summarize the results of this work and the four main recommendations we believe the AAS should take to make lasting positive changes. We emphasize that the goal of our report, and the GATF's work, is not to help programs select students, or to help applicants get into graduate school. Instead, we have focused on ways to make the admissions process itself more streamlined, fair, and efficient for everyone involved.

Physical Properties of Molecular Clouds in the Overlap Region of the Merging Antennae Galaxies

As the closest major galaxy merger and home to thousands of super star clusters (SSCs), the Antennae Galaxies (NGC 4038 and NGC 4039) are an important location to study the molecular clouds at sites of vigorous star formation. We cataloged giant molecular clouds (GMCs) in the region where the two galaxies overlap using high-resolution (~0.1" ~10 pc) Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of the 12CO(2-1) and 13CO(2-1)} emission lines. Of the 72 individual GMCs identified in the overlap region, 17 are within uncertainties of having the necessary mass, pressure, and size needed to form super star clusters (SSCs). Of those 17 GMCs, only one has significant ionizing radiation, indicating that the birth environments are likely still intact in the 16 other GMCs. We compared the physical properties calculated from 12CO(2-1) GMC data with observations of 10 other galaxies obtained using the same emission line and similar resolution. Compared to other sources in this sample, the GMCs from the Antennae, as well as in other starbursts and in the centers of galaxies, have the highest luminosities, surface densities, and turbulent pressures. The GMCs in starbursts and at the centers of galaxies also have large linewidths, although the linewidths in the Antennae are among the widest. These comparative results also indicate that the Antennae GMCs have the highest virial parameters despite their high densities.
