Flow lines on the moduli space of rank $2$ twisted Higgs bundles

This paper studies the gradient flow lines for the $L^2$ norm square of the Higgs field defined on the moduli space of semistable rank $2$ Higgs bundles twisted by a line bundle of positive degree over a compact Riemann surface $X$. The main result is that these spaces of flow lines have an algebro-geometric classification in terms of secant varieties for different embeddings of $X$ into the projectivisation of the negative eigenspace of the Hessian at a critical point. The Morse-theoretic compactification of spaces of flow lines given by adding broken flow lines then has a natural algebraic interpretation via a projection to Bertram's resolution of secant varieties.

Convolution for quiver varieties via cup product on a Morse complex

Convolution in Borel-Moore homology plays an important role in Nakajima's construction of representations of the Heisenberg algebra and of modified enveloping algebras of Kac-Moody algebras. In its most basic form, convolution between two quiver varieties is given by pullback and then pushforward via the Hecke correspondence for quivers. In previous work we showed that the Hecke correspondence has a Morse-theoretic interpretation in terms of spaces of flow lines. The goal of this paper is to show that the topological information that defines generators for Nakajima's representations can be encoded in the cup product for a Morse complex defined on the smooth space of representations of a quiver without relations, and then pulling back to the subvariety of representations that do satisfy a given set of relations. The results are valid for the main motivating example of Nakajima quivers, as well as other quivers with relations derived from these (for example handsaw quivers). For the norm square of a moment map on the space of representations of a quiver, the usual Morse-Bott-Smale transversality condition on the space of flow lines fails, however a weaker version of transversality is still satisfied. A major part of the paper is spent developing a general theory in this setting of weak transversality from which one can recover the usual construction of the differentials and cup product on the Morse complex by adding an intermediate step of taking cup product with a certain Euler class, which is explicitly computable for the space of representations of a quiver.

Fractional Quantum Numbers, Complex Orbifolds and Noncommutative Geometry

This paper studies the conductance on the universal homology covering space $Z$ of 2D orbifolds in a strong magnetic field, thereby removing the integrality constraint on the magnetic field in earlier works in the literature. We consider a natural Landau Hamiltonian on $Z$ and show that its low-lying spectrum consists of a finite number of isolated points. We calculate the von Neumann degree of the associated holomorphic spectral orbibundles when the magnetic field $B$ is large, and obtain fractional quantum numbers as the conductance.

Action of the mapping class group on character varieties and Higgs bundles

We consider the action of a finite subgroup of the mapping class group $Mod(S)$ of an oriented compact surface $S$ of genus $g \geq 2$ on the moduli space $\mathcal{R}(S,G)$ of representations of $π_1(S)$ in a connected semisimple real Lie group $G$. Kerckhoff's solution of the Nielsen realization problem ensures the existence of an element $J$ in the Teichmüller space of $S$ for which $Γ$ can be realised as a subgroup of the group of automorphisms of $X=(S,J)$ which are holomorphic or antiholomorphic. We identify the fixed points of the action of $Γ$ on $\mathcal{R}(S,G)$ in terms of $G$-Higgs bundles on $X$ equipped with a certain twisted $Γ$-equivariant structure, where the twisting involves abelian and non-abelian group cohomology simultaneously. When the kernel of the isotropy representation of the maximal compact subgroup of $G$ is trivial, the fixed points can be described in terms of familiar objects on $Y=X/Γ^+$, where $Γ^+ \subset Γ$ is the maximal subgroup of $Γ$ consisting of holomorphic automorphisms of $X$. If $Γ=Γ^+$ one obtains actual $Γ$-equivariant $G$-Higgs bundles on $X$, which in turn correspond with parabolic Higgs bundles on $Y=X/Γ$ (this generalizes work of Nasatyr \& Steer for $G=SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ and Boden, Andersen & Grove and Furuta & Steer for $G=SU(n)$). If on the other hand $Γ$ has antiholomorphic automorphisms, the objects on $Y=X/Γ^+$ correspond with pseudoreal parabolic Higgs bundles. This is a generalization in the parabolic setup of the pseudoreal Higgs bundles studied by the first author in collaboration with Biswas & Hurtubise.

Fractional quantum numbers via complex orbifolds

This paper studies both the conductance and charge transport on 2D orbifolds in a strong magnetic field. We consider a family of Landau Hamiltonians on a complex, compact 2D orbifold $Y$ that are parametrised by the Jacobian torus $J(Y)$ of $Y$. We calculate the degree of the associated stable holomorphic spectral orbibundles when the magnetic field $B$ is large, and obtain fractional quantum numbers as the conductance and a refined analysis also gives the charge transport. A key tool studied here is a nontrivial generalisation of the Nahm transform to 2D orbifolds.

Equivariant control data and neighborhood deformation retractions

In this article we study Whitney (B) regular stratified spaces with the action of a compact Lie group $G$ which preserves the strata. We prove an equivariant submersion theorem and use it to show that such a $G$-stratified space carries a system of $G$-equivariant control data. As an application, we show that if $A \subset X$ is a closed $G$-stratified subspace which is a union of strata of $X$, then the inclusion $i : A \hookrightarrow X$ is a $G$-equivariant cofibration. In particular, this theorem applies whenever $X$ is a $G$-invariant analytic subspace of an analytic $G$-manifold $M$ and $A \hookrightarrow X$ is a closed $G$-invariant analytic subspace of $X$.

Local behaviour of the gradient flow of an analytic function near the unstable set of a critical point

This paper extends previous work from arxiv:1702.05223, which shows that the main theorem of Morse theory holds for a large class of functions on singular spaces, where the function and the underlying singular space are required to satisfy the five conditions explained in detail in the introduction to arxiv:1702.05223. The fourth of these conditions requires that the gradient flow of the function is well-behaved near the critical points, which is a very natural condition, but difficult to explicitly check for examples without a detailed knowledge of the flow. In this paper we prove a general result showing that the first three conditions always imply the fourth when the underlying space is locally compact. Moreover, if the function is proper and analytic then the first four conditions are all satisfied.

Hitchin's equations on a nonorientable manifold

We define Hitchin's moduli space for a principal bundle $P$, whose structure group is a compact semisimple Lie group $K$, over a compact non-orientable Riemannian manifold $M$. We use the Donaldson-Corlette correspondence, which identifies Hitchin's moduli space with the moduli space of flat $K^\mathbb{C}$-connections, which remains valid when M is non-orientable. This enables us to study Hitchin's moduli space both by gauge theoretical methods and algebraically by using representation varieties. If the orientable double cover $\tilde{M}$ of $M$ is a Kähler manifold with odd complex dimension and if the Kähler form is odd under the non-trivial deck transformation on $\tilde{M}$, Hitchin's moduli space of the pull-back bundle $\tilde{P}$ over $\tilde{M}$ has a hyper-Kähler structure and admits an involution induced by the deck transformation. The fixed-point set is symplectic or Lagrangian with respect to various symplectic structures on Hitchin's moduli space over $\tilde{M}$. We show that there is a local diffeomorphism from Hitchin's moduli space over (the nonorientable manifold) $M$ to the fixed point set of the Hitchin's moduli space over (its orientable double cover) $\tilde{M}$. We compare the gauge theoretical constructions with the algebraic approach using representation varieties.

Conditions of smoothness of moduli spaces of flat connections and of character varieties

We use gauge theoretic and algebraic methods to examine sufficient conditions for smooth points on the moduli space of flat connections on a compact manifold and on the character variety of a finitely generated and presented group. We give a complete proof of the slice theorem for the action of the group of gauge transformations on the space of flat connections. Consequently, the slice is smooth if the second cohomology of the manifold with coefficients in the semisimple part of the adjoint bundle vanishes. On the other hand, we find that the smoothness of the slice for the character variety of a finitely generated and presented group depends not only on the second group cohomology but also on the relation module of the presentation. However, when there is a single relator or if there is no relation among the relators in the presentation, our condition reduces to the minimality of the second group cohomology. This is also verified using Fox calculus. Finally, we compare the conditions of smoothness in the two approaches.

Equivariant Morse theory for the norm-square of a moment map on a variety

We show that the main theorem of Morse theory holds for a large class of functions on singular spaces. The function must satisfy certain conditions extending the usual requirements on a manifold that Condition C holds and the gradient flow around the critical sets is well-behaved, and the singular space must satisfy a local deformation retract condition. We then show that these conditions are satisfied when the function is the norm-square of a moment map on an affine variety, and that the homotopy equivalence from this theorem is equivariant with respect to the associated Hamiltonian group action. An important special case of these results is that the main theorem of Morse theory holds for the norm square of a moment map on the space of representations of a finite quiver with relations.

Analytic convergence of harmonic metrics for parabolic Higgs bundles

In this paper we investigate the moduli space of parabolic Higgs bundles over a punctured Riemann surface with varying weights at the punctures. We show that the harmonic metric depends analytically on the weights and the stable Higgs bundle. This gives a Higgs bundle generalisation of a theorem of McOwen on the existence of hyperbolic cone metrics on a punctured surface within a given conformal class, and a generalisation of a theorem of Judge on the analytic parametrisation of these metrics.

Moment map flows and the Hecke correspondence for quivers

In this paper we investigate the convergence properties of the upwards gradient flow of the norm-square of a moment map on the space of representations of a quiver. The first main result gives a necessary and sufficient algebraic criterion for a complex group orbit to intersect the unstable set of a given critical point. Therefore we can classify all of the isomorphism classes which contain an initial condition that flows up to a given critical point. As an application, we then show that Nakajima's Hecke correspondence for quivers has a Morse-theoretic interpretation as pairs of critical points connected by flow lines for the norm-square of a moment map. The results are valid in the general setting of finite quivers with relations.

The reverse Yang-Mills-Higgs flow in a neighbourhood of a critical point

The main result of this paper is a construction of solutions to the reverse Yang-Mills-Higgs flow converging in the $C^\infty$ topology to a critical point. The construction uses only the complex gauge group action, which leads to an algebraic classification of the isomorphism classes of points in the unstable set of a critical point in terms of a filtration of the underlying Higgs bundle. Analysing the compatibility of this filtration with the Harder-Narasimhan-Seshadri double filtration gives an algebraic criterion for two critical points to be connected by a flow line. As an application, we can use this to construct Hecke modifications of Higgs bundles via the Yang-Mills-Higgs flow. When the Higgs field is zero (corresponding to the Yang-Mills flow), this criterion has a geometric interpretation in terms of secant varieties of the projectivisation of the underlying bundle inside the unstable manifold of a critical point, which gives a precise description of broken and unbroken flow lines connecting two critical points. For non-zero Higgs field, at generic critical points the analogous interpretation involves the secant varieties of the spectral curve of the Higgs bundle.

Higgs bundles over cell complexes and representations of finitely generated groups

The purpose of this paper is to extend the Donaldson-Corlette theorem to the case of vector bundles over cell complexes. We define the notion of a vector bundle and a Higgs bundle over a complex, and describe the associated Betti, de Rham and Higgs moduli spaces. The main theorem is that the $SL(r, \mathbb{C})$ character variety of a finitely presented group $Γ$ is homeomorphic to the moduli space of rank $r$ Higgs bundles over an admissible complex $X$ with $π_1(X) = Γ$. A key role is played by the theory of harmonic maps defined on singular domains.

Anti-holomorphic involutive isometry of hyper-Kähler manifolds and branes

We study complex Lagrangian submanifolds of a compact hyper-Kähler manifold and prove two results: (a) that an involution of a hyper-Kähler manifold which is antiholomorphic with respect to one complex structure and which acts non-trivially on the corresponding symplectic form always has a fixed point locus which is complex Lagrangian with respect to one of the other complex structures, and (b) there exist Lagrangian submanifolds which are complex with respect to one complex structure and are not the fixed point locus of any involution which is anti-holomorphic with respect to one of the other complex structures.

Cohomology of U(2,1) representation varieties of surface groups

In this paper we use the Morse theory of the Yang-Mills-Higgs functional on the singular space of Higgs bundles on Riemann surfaces to compute the equivariant cohomology of the space of semistable U(2,1) and SU(2,1) Higgs bundles with fixed Toledo invariant. In the non-coprime case this gives new results about the topology of the U(2,1) and SU(2,1) character varieties of surface groups. The main results are a calculation of the equivariant Poincare polynomials, a Kirwan surjectivity theorem in the non-fixed determinant case, and a description of the action of the Torelli group on the equivariant cohomology of the character variety. This builds on earlier work for stable pairs and rank 2 Higgs bundles.

Morse theory and stable pairs

We study the Morse theory of the Yang-Mills-Higgs functional on the space of pairs $(A,Φ)$, where $A$ is a unitary connection on a rank 2 hermitian vector bundle over a compact Riemann surface, and $Φ$ is a holomorphic section of $(E, d_A")$. We prove that a certain explicitly defined substratification of the Morse stratification is perfect in the sense of $\G$-equivariant cohomology, where $\G$ denotes the unitary gauge group. As a consequence, Kirwan surjectivity holds for pairs. It also follows that the twist embedding into higher degree induces a surjection on equivariant cohomology. This may be interpreted as a rank 2 version of the analogous statement for symmetric products of Riemann surfaces. Finally, we compute the $\G$-equivariant Poincaré polynomial of the space of $τ$-semistable pairs. In particular, we recover an earlier result of Thaddeus. The analysis provides an interpretation of the Thaddeus flips in terms of a variation of Morse functions.
