Branched covers and matrix factorizations

Let $(S,\mathfrak n)$ be a regular local ring and $f$ a non-zero element of $\mathfrak n^2$. A theorem due to Knörrer states that there are finitely many isomorphism classes of maximal Cohen-Macaulay $R=S/(f)$-modules if and only if the same is true for the double branched cover of $R$, that is, the hypersurface ring defined by $f+z^2$ in $S[[ z ]]$. We consider an analogue of this statement in the case of the hypersurface ring defined instead by $f+z^d$ for $d\ge 2$. In particular, we show that this hypersurface, which we refer to as the $d$-fold branched cover of $R$, has finite Cohen-Macaulay representation type if and only if, up to isomorphism, there are only finitely many indecomposable matrix factorizations of $f$ with $d$ factors. As a result, we give a complete list of polynomials $f$ with this property in characteristic zero. Furthermore, we show that reduced $d$-fold matrix factorizations of $f$ correspond to Ulrich modules over the $d$-fold branched cover of $R$.

Some extensions of theorems of Knörrer and Herzog-Popescu

A construction due to Knörrer shows that if $N$ is a maximal Cohen-Macaulay module over a hypersurface defined by $f+y^2$, then the first syzygy of $N/yN$ decomposes as the direct sum of $N$ and its own first syzygy. This was extended by Herzog-Popescu to hypersurfaces $f+y^n$, replacing $N/yN$ by $N/y^{n-1}N$. We show, in the same setting as Herzog-Popescu, that the first syzygy of $N/y^{k}N$ is always an extension of $N$ by its first syzygy, and moreover that this extension has useful approximation properties. We give two applications. First, we construct a ring $Λ^\#$ over which every finitely generated module has an eventually $2$-periodic projective resolution, prompting us to call it a "non-commutative hypersurface ring". Second, we give upper bounds on the dimension of the stable module category (a.k.a. the singularity category) of a hypersurface defined by a polynomial of the form $x_1^{a_1} + \dots + x_d^{a_d}$.

On the derived category of Grassmannians in arbitrary characteristic

In this paper we consider Grassmannians in arbitrary characteristic. Generalizing Kapranov's well-known characteristic-zero results we construct dual exceptional collections on them (which are however not strong) as well as a tilting bundle. We show that this tilting bundle has a quasi-hereditary endomorphism ring and we identify the standard, costandard, projective and simple modules of the latter.

Non-commutative desingularization of determinantal varieties, II: Arbitrary minors

In our paper "Non-commutative desingularization of determinantal varieties, I" we constructed and studied non-commutative resolutions of determinantal varieties defined by maximal minors. At the end of the introduction we asserted that the results could be generalized to determinantal varieties defined by non-maximal minors, at least in characteristic zero. In this paper we prove the existence of non-commutative resolutions in the general case in a manner which is still characteristic free, and carry out the explicit description by generators and relations in characteristic zero. As an application of our results we prove that there is a fully faithful embedding between the bounded derived categories of the two canonical (commutative) resolutions of a determinantal variety, confirming a well-known conjecture of Bondal and Orlov in this special case.

Brauer-Thrall theory for maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules

The Brauer-Thrall Conjectures, now theorems, were originally stated for finitely generated modules over a finite-dimensional $\sk$-algebra. They say, roughly speaking, that infinite representation type implies the existence of lots of indecomposable modules of arbitrarily large $\sk$-dimension. These conjectures have natural interpretations in the context of maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules over Cohen-Macaulay local rings. This is a survey of progress on these transplanted conjectures.

Non-commutative crepant resolutions: scenes from categorical geometry

Non-commutative crepant resolutions are algebraic objects defined by Van den Bergh to realize an equivalence of derived categories in birational geometry. They are motivated by tilting theory, the McKay correspondence, and the minimal model program, and have applications to string theory and representation theory. In this expository article I situate Van den Bergh's definition within these contexts and describe some of the current research in the area.

Presentations of rings with non-trivial semidualizing modules

Let R be a commutative noetherian local ring. A finitely generated R-module C is semidualizing if it is self-orthogonal and satisfies the condition Hom_R(C,C) \cong R. We prove that a Cohen-Macaulay ring R with dualizing module D admits a semidualizing module C satisfying R\ncong C \ncong D if and only if it is a homomorphic image of a Gorenstein ring in which the defining ideal decomposes in a cohomologically independent way. This expands on a well-known result of Foxby, Reiten and Sharp saying that R admits a dualizing module if and only if R is Cohen--Macaulay and a homomorphic image of a local Gorenstein ring.

Non-commutative desingularization of determinantal varieties, I

We show that determinantal varieties defined by maximal minors of a generic matrix have a non-commutative desingularization, in that we construct a maximal Cohen-Macaulay module over such a variety whose endomorphism ring is Cohen-Macaulay and has finite global dimension. In the case of the determinant of a square matrix, this gives a non-commutative crepant resolution.

Factoring the Adjoint and Maximal Cohen--Macaulay Modules over the Generic Determinant

A question of Bergman asks whether the adjoint of the generic square matrix over a field can be factored nontrivially as a product of square matrices. We show that such factorizations indeed exist over any coefficient ring when the matrix has even size. Establishing a correspondence between such factorizations and extensions of maximal Cohen--Macaulay modules over the generic determinant, we exhibit all factorizations where one of the factors has determinant equal to the generic determinant. The classification shows not only that the Cohen--Macaulay representation theory of the generic determinant is wild in the tame-wild dichotomy, but that it is quite wild: even in rank two, the isomorphism classes cannot be parametrized by a finite-dimensional variety over the coefficients. We further relate the factorization problem to the multiplicative structure of the $\Ext$--algebra of the two nontrivial rank-one maximal Cohen--Macaulay modules and determine it completely.

On the growth of the Betti sequence of the canonical module

We study the growth of the Betti sequence of the canonical module of a Cohen-Macaulay local ring. It is an open question whether this sequence grows exponentially whenever the ring is not Gorenstein. We answer the question of exponential growth affirmatively for a large class of rings, and prove that the growth is in general not extremal. As an application of growth, we give criteria for a Cohen-Macaulay ring possessing a canonical module to be Gorenstein.

Endomorphism rings of finite global dimension

For a commutative local ring $R$, consider (noncommutative) $R$-algebras $Λ$ of the form $Λ= End_R(M)$ where $M$ is a reflexive $R$-module with nonzero free direct summand. Such algebras $Λ$ of finite global dimension can be viewed as potential substitutes for, or analogues of, a resolution of singularities of $Spec R$. For example, Van den Bergh has shown that a three-dimensional Gorenstein normal $C$-algebra with isolated terminal singularities has a crepant resolution of singularities if and only if it has such an algebra $Λ$ with finite global dimension and which is maximal Cohen--Macaulay over $R$ (a ``noncommutative crepant resolution of singularities''). We produce algebras $Λ=End_R(M)$ having finite global dimension in two contexts: when $R$ is a reduced one-dimensional complete local ring, or when $R$ is a Cohen--Macaulay local ring of finite Cohen--Macaulay type. If in the latter case $R$ is Gorenstein, then the construction gives a noncommutative crepant resolution of singularities in the sense of Van den Bergh.

The adjoint of an even size matrix factors

We show that the adjoint matrix of a generic square matrix of even size can be factored nontrivially, answering a question of G. Bergman. This note is a preliminary report on work in progress.

Two theorems about maximal Cohen--Macaulay modules

This paper contains two theorems concerning the theory of maximal Cohen--Macaulay modules. The first theorem proves that certain Ext groups between maximal Cohen--Macaulay modules $M$ and $N$ must have finite length, provided only finitely many isomorphism classes of maximal Cohen--Macaulay modules exist having ranks up to the sum of the ranks of $M$ and $N$. This has several corollaries. In particular it proves that a Cohen--Macaulay local ring of finite Cohen--Macaulay type has an isolated singularity. A well-known theorem of Auslander gives the same conclusion but requires that the ring be Henselian. Other corollaries of our result include statements concerning when a ring is Gorenstein or a complete intersection on the punctured spectrum, and the recent theorem of Leuschke and Wiegand that the completion of an excellent Cohen--Macaulay local ring of finite Cohen--Macaulay type is again of finite Cohen--Macaulay type. The second theorem proves that a complete local Gorenstein domain of positive characteristic $p$ and dimension $d$ is $F$-rational if and only if the number of copies of $R$ splitting out of $R^{1/p^e}$ divided by $p^{de}$ has a positive limit. This result generalizes work of Smith and Van den Bergh. We call this limit the $F$-signature of the ring and give some of its properties.

Hypersurfaces of bounded Cohen--Macaulay type

Let R = k[[x_0,...,x_d]]/(f), where k is a field and f is a non-zero non-unit of the formal power series ring k[[x_0,...,x_d]]. We investigate the question of which rings of this form have bounded Cohen--Macaulay type, that is, have a bound on the multiplicities of the indecomposable maximal Cohen--Macaulay modules. As with finite Cohen--Macaulay type, if the characteristic is different from two, the question reduces to the one-dimensional case: The ring R has bounded Cohen--Macaulay type if and only if R is isomorphic to k[[x_0,...,x_d]]/(g+x_2^2+...+x_d^2), where g is an element of k[[x_0,x_1]] and k[[x_0,x_1]]/(g) has bounded Cohen--Macaulay type. We determine which rings of the form k[[x_0,x_1]]/(g) have bounded Cohen--Macaulay type.

Local rings of bounded Cohen-Macaulay type

Let (R,m,k) be a local Cohen-Macaulay (CM) ring of dimension one. It is known that R has finite CM type if and only if R is reduced and has bounded CM type. Here we study the one-dimensional rings of bounded but infinite CM type. We will classify these rings up to analytic isomorphism (under the additional hypothesis that the ring contains an infinite field). In the first section we deal with the complete case, and in the second we show that bounded CM type ascends to and descends from the completion. In the third section we study ascent and descent in higher dimensions and prove a Brauer-Thrall theorem for excellent rings.
