Horizon Acoustics of the GHS Black Hole and the Spectrum of ${\rm AdS}_2$

We uncover a novel structure in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton gravity: an ${\rm AdS}_2 \times S^2$ solution in string frame, which can be obtained by a near-horizon limit of the extreme GHS black hole with dilaton coupling $λ\neq 1$. Unlike the Bertotti-Robinson spacetime, our solution has independent length scales for the ${\rm AdS}_2$ and $S^2$, with ratio controlled by $λ$. We solve the perturbation problem for this solution, finding the independently propagating towers of states in terms of superpositions of gravitons, photons, and dilatons and their associated effective potentials. These potentials describe modes obeying conformal quantum mechanics, with couplings that we compute, and can be recast as giving the spectrum of the effective masses of the modes. By dictating the conformal weights of boundary operators, this spectrum provides crucial data for any future construction of a holographic dual to these ${\rm AdS}_2\times S^2$ configurations.

Flavor Constraints from Unitarity and Analyticity

We use unitarity and analyticity of scattering amplitudes to constrain fermionic operators in the standard model effective field theory. For four-fermion operators at mass dimension 8, we scatter flavor superpositions in fixed standard model representations and find the Wilson coefficients to be constrained so that their contraction with any pair of pure density matrices is positive. These constraints imply that flavor-violating couplings are upper-bounded by their flavor-conserving cousins. For instance, LEP data already appears to preclude certain operators in upcoming $μ\to 3e$ measurements.

Entanglement Wedge Cross Section Inequalities from Replicated Geometries

We generalize the constructions for the multipartite reflected entropy in order to construct spacetimes capable of representing multipartite entanglement wedge cross sections of differing party number as Ryu-Takayanagi surfaces on a single replicated geometry. We devise a general algorithm for such constructions for arbitrary party number and demonstrate how such methods can be used to derive novel inequalities constraining mulipartite entanglement wedge cross sections.

Warping Wormholes with Dust: a Metric Construction of the Python's Lunch

We show how wormholes in three spacetime dimensions can be customizably warped using pressureless matter. In particular, we exhibit a large new class of solutions in (2+1)-dimensional general relativity with energy-momentum tensor describing a negative cosmological constant and positive-energy dust. From this class of solutions, we construct wormhole geometries and study their geometric and holographic properties, including Ryu-Takayanagi surfaces, entanglement wedge cross sections, mutual information, and outer entropy. Finally, we construct a Python's Lunch geometry: a wormhole in asymptotically anti-de Sitter space with a local maximum in size near its middle.

Consistency of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory

We derive bounds on couplings in the standard model effective field theory (SMEFT) as a consequence of causality and the analytic structure of scattering amplitudes. In the SMEFT, there are 64 independent operators at mass dimension eight that are quartic in bosons (either Higgs or gauge fields) and that contain four derivatives and/or field strengths, including both CP-conserving and CP-violating operators. Using analytic dispersion relation arguments for two-to-two bosonic scattering amplitudes, we derive 27 independent bounds on the sign or magnitude of the couplings. We show that these bounds also follow as a consequence of causality of signal propagation in nonvacuum SM backgrounds. These bounds come in two qualitative forms: i) positivity of (various linear combinations of) couplings of CP-even operators and ii) upper bounds on the magnitude of CP-odd operators in terms of (products of) CP-even couplings. We exhibit various classes of example completions, which all satisfy our EFT bounds. These bounds have consequences for current and future particle physics experiments, as part of the observable parameter space is inconsistent with causality and analyticity. To demonstrate the impact of our bounds, we consider applications both to SMEFT constraints derived at colliders and to limits on the neutron electric dipole moment, highlighting the connection between such searches suggested by infrared consistency.

Cosmological Decoherence from Thermal Gravitons

We study the effects of gravitationally-driven decoherence on tunneling processes associated with false vacuum decays, such as the Coleman--De~Luccia instanton. We compute the thermal graviton-induced decoherence rate for a wave function describing a perfect fluid of nonzero energy density in a finite region. When the effective cosmological constant is positive, the thermal graviton background sourced by a de Sitter horizon provides an unavoidable decoherence effect, which may have important consequences for tunneling processes in cosmological history. We discuss generalizations and consequences of this effect and comment on its observability and applications to black hole physics.

Entanglement and the Double Copy

We construct entangled states of gluons that scatter exactly as if they were gravitons. Operationally, these objects implement the double copy at the level of the wave function. Our analysis begins with a general ansatz for a wave function characterizing gluons in two copies of ${\rm SU}(N)$ gauge theory. Given relatively minimal assumptions following from permutation invariance and dimensional analysis, the three- and four-particle wave functions generate scattering amplitudes that automatically coincide exactly with gravity, modulo normalization. For five-particle scattering the match is not automatic but imposing certain known selection rules on the amplitude is sufficient to uniquely reproduce gravity. The resulting amplitudes exhibit a color-dressed and permutation-invariant form of the usual double copy relations. We compute the entanglement entropy between the two gauge theory copies and learn that these states are maximally-entangled at large $N$. Moreover, this approach extends immediately to effective field theories, where Born-Infeld photons and Galileons can be similarly recast as entangled gluons and pions.

Entropy Bounds on Effective Field Theory from Rotating Dyonic Black Holes

We derive new bounds on higher-dimension operator coefficients in four-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory. Positivity of classically-generated corrections to the Wald entropy of thermodynamically stable, rotating dyonic black holes implies a multiparameter family of field basis invariant inequalities that exhibit electromagnetic duality and are satisfied by examples from field and string theory. These bounds imply that effective operators modify the extremality condition of large black holes so as to permit their decay to smaller ones, thus satisfying the weak gravity conjecture.

Towards a Bit Threads Derivation of Holographic Entanglement of Purification

We apply the bit thread formulation of holographic entanglement entropy to reduced states describing only the geometry contained within an entanglement wedge. We argue that a certain optimized bit thread configuration, which we construct, gives a purification of the reduced state to a full holographic state obeying a precise set of conditional mutual information relations. When this purification exists, we establish, under certain assumptions, the conjectured $E_P = E_W$ relation equating the entanglement of purification with the area of the minimal cross section partitioning the bulk entanglement wedge. Along the way, we comment on minimal purifications of holographic states, geometric purifications, and black hole geometries.

Entanglement of Purification and Multiboundary Wormhole Geometries

We posit a geometrical description of the entanglement of purification for subregions in a holographic CFT. The bulk description naturally generalizes the two-party case and leads to interesting inequalities among multi-party entanglements of purification that can be geometrically proven from the conjecture. Further, we study the relationship between holographic entanglements of purification in locally-AdS3 spacetimes and entanglement entropies in multi-throated wormhole geometries constructed via quotienting by isometries. In particular, we derive new holographic inequalities for geometries that are locally AdS3 relating entanglements of purification for subregions and entanglement entropies in the wormhole geometries.

Outer Entropy and Quasilocal Energy

We define the coarse-grained entropy of a `normal' surface $σ$, i.e., a surface that is neither trapped nor antitrapped. Following Engelhardt and Wall, the entropy is defined in terms of the area of an auxiliary extremal surface. This area is maximized over all auxiliary geometries that can be constructed in the interior of $σ$, while holding fixed the spatial exterior (the outer wedge). We argue that the area is maximized when the stress tensor in the auxiliary geometry vanishes, and we develop a formalism for computing it under this assumption. The coarse-grained entropy can be interpreted as a quasilocal energy of $σ$. This energy possesses desirable properties such as positivity and monotonicity, which derive directly from its information-theoretic definition.

New Spacetimes for Rotating Dust in (2+1)-Dimensional General Relativity

Multi-parameter solutions to the Einstein equations in 2+1 dimensions are presented, with stress-energy given by a rotating dust with negative cosmological constant. The matter density is uniform in the corotating frame, and the ratio of the density to the vacuum energy may be freely chosen. The rotation profile of the dust is controlled by two parameters, and the circumference of a circle of a given radius is controlled by two additional parameters. Though locally related to known metrics, the global properties of this class of spacetimes are nontrivial and allow for new and interesting structure, including apparent horizons and closed timelike curves, which can be censored by a certain parameter choice. General members of this class of metrics have two Killing vectors, but parameters can be chosen to enhance the symmetry to four Killing vectors. The causal structure of these geometries, interesting limits, and relationship to the Gödel metric are discussed. An additional solution, with nonuniform dust density in a Gaussian profile and zero cosmological constant, is also presented, and its relation to the uniform-density solutions in a certain limit is discussed.

Traversable Wormholes as Quantum Channels: Exploring CFT Entanglement Structure and Channel Capacity in Holography

We interpret the traversable wormhole in AdS/CFT in the context of quantum information theory. In particular, we investigate its properties as both a quantum channel and entanglement witness. We define protocols that allow either the bounding of the channel's entanglement capacity or the determination of aspects of the entanglement structure between the two boundary CFTs. Such protocols and connections allow for the use of quantum channel techniques in the study of gravitational physics and vice versa. More generally, our results suggest a purely quantum information-theoretic criterion for recognizing when the product of two boundary theories has a classical bulk interpretation.

Higher-Point Positivity

We consider the extension of techniques for bounding higher-dimension operators in quantum effective field theories to higher-point operators. Working in the context of theories polynomial in $X=(\partial ϕ)^2$, we examine how the techniques of bounding such operators based on causality, analyticity of scattering amplitudes, and unitarity of the spectral representation are all modified for operators beyond $(\partial ϕ)^4$. Under weak-coupling assumptions that we clarify, we show using all three methods that in theories in which the coefficient $λ_n$ of the $X^n$ term for some $n$ is larger than the other terms in units of the cutoff, $λ_n$ must be positive (respectively, negative) for $n$ even (odd), in mostly-plus metric signature. Along the way, we present a first-principles derivation of the propagator numerator for all massive higher-spin bosons in arbitrary dimension. We remark on subtleties and challenges of bounding $P(X)$ theories in greater generality. Finally, we examine the connections among energy conditions, causality, stability, and the involution condition on the Legendre transform relating the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian.

Proof of the Weak Gravity Conjecture from Black Hole Entropy

We prove that higher-dimension operators contribute positively to the entropy of a thermodynamically stable black hole at fixed mass and charge. Our results apply whenever the dominant corrections originate at tree level from quantum field theoretic dynamics. More generally, positivity of the entropy shift is equivalent to a certain inequality relating the free energies of black holes. These entropy inequalities mandate new positivity bounds on the coefficients of higher-dimension operators. One of these conditions implies that the charge-to-mass ratio of an extremal black hole asymptotes to unity from above for increasing mass. Consequently, large extremal black holes are unstable to decay to smaller extremal black holes and the weak gravity conjecture is automatically satisfied. Our findings generalize to arbitrary spacetime dimension and to the case of multiple gauge fields. The assumptions of this proof are valid across a range of scenarios, including string theory constructions with a dilaton stabilized below the string scale.

Area Law Unification and the Holographic Event Horizon

We prove a new, large family of area laws in general relativity, which apply to certain classes of untrapped surfaces that we dub generalized holographic screens. Our family of area laws contains, as special cases, the area laws for marginally-trapped surfaces (holographic screens) and the event horizon (Hawking's area theorem). In addition to these results in general relativity, we show that in the context of holography the geometry of a generalized holographic screen is related to the outer entropy of the screen. Specifically, we show for spherically-symmetric spacetimes that the area of the largest HRT surface consistent with the outer wedge can be computed in terms of the geometry of the general (not necessarily marginally-trapped) codimension-two surface defining the wedge. This outer entropy satisfies a second law of thermodynamics, growing monotonically along the generalized holographic screen. In particular, this result provides the holographic dual for the geometry of the event horizon for spherically-symmetric spacetimes.

Branches of the Black Hole Wave Function Need Not Contain Firewalls

We discuss the branching structure of the quantum-gravitational wave function that describes the evaporation of a black hole. A global wave function which initially describes a classical Schwarzschild geometry is continually decohered into distinct semiclassical branches by the emission of Hawking radiation. The laws of quantum mechanics dictate that the wave function evolves unitarily, but this unitary evolution is only manifest when considering the global description of the wave function; it is not implemented by time evolution on a single semiclassical branch. Conversely, geometric notions like the position or smoothness of a horizon only make sense on the level of individual branches. We consider the implications of this picture for probes of black holes by classical observers in definite geometries, like those involved in the AMPS construction. We argue that individual branches can describe semiclassical geometries free of firewalls, even as the global wave function evolves unitarily. We show that the pointer states of infalling detectors that are robust under Hamiltonian evolution are distinct from, and incompatible with, those of exterior detectors stationary with respect to the black hole horizon, in the sense that the pointer bases are related to each other via nontrivial transformations that mix the system, apparatus, and environment. This result describes a Hilbert-space version of black hole complementarity.

Bulk Connectedness and Boundary Entanglement

We prove, for any state in a conformal field theory defined on a set of boundary manifolds with corresponding classical holographic bulk geometry, that for any bipartition of the boundary into two non-clopen sets, the density matrix cannot be a tensor product of the reduced density matrices on each region of the bipartition. In particular, there must be entanglement across the bipartition surface. We extend this no-go theorem to general, arbitrary partitions of the boundary manifolds into non-clopen parts, proving that the density matrix cannot be a tensor product. This result gives a necessary condition for states to potentially correspond to holographic duals.
