Bar cohomology of links: beyond Milnor invariants

We develop bar cohomology of link complements as an invariant of links in homology spheres. In this setting, bar cohomology is a Hopf algebra which is calculable using surfaces and their intersection curves in a link complement. In this first in a sequence of works, we introduce the invariant and show that it defines a canonical subspace of the tensor Hopf algebra, which already encodes information about Milnor's link invariants and provides geometrically significant information beyond them.

The transverse singular complex

Let $M$ be a smooth manifold without boundary and let $\mathcal{T}$ be a countable collection of manifolds with corners, each equipped with a smooth map to $M$. We show that the singular simplicial set $\mathrm{Sing}(M)$ of $M$ deformation retracts onto the simplicial subset $\mathrm{Sing}^{\mathcal{T}}\!(M)$ of smooth singular simplices that are transverse to every element of $\mathcal{T}$.

Foundations of geometric cohomology: from co-orientations to product structures

This manuscript develops a geometric approach to ordinary cohomology of smooth manifolds, constructing a cochain complex model based on co-oriented smooth maps from manifolds with corners. Special attention is given to the pull-back product of such smooth maps, which provides our geometric cochains with a partially defined product structure inducing the cup product in cohomology. A parallel treatment of homology is also given allowing for a geometric unification of the contravariant and covariant theories.

Chern classes and unitary equivalence of normal matrices over topological spaces

This paper continues the authors' work on the question of unitary equivalence of matrices with entries in the complex-valued functions of a topological space (matrices over spaces). Specifically, we here consider the question of unitary equivalence for pairs of normal matrices over a space that share a common characteristic polynomial that can be globally factored into distinct linear factors. We show that such a matrix is diagonalizable if and only if the first Chern classes of its eigenbundles all vanish and derive as an application that all such matrices over $\mathbb{C}P^m$ are diagonalizable for $m > 1$. Next, given a CW complex $X$ and a polynomial $\mu$ in $C(X)[\lambda]$ that globally splits into distinct linear factors, we prove that the number of unitary equivalence classes of matrices with $\mu$ as a characteristic polynomial depends only on the space $X$ and the degree of $\mu$, and we give some estimates on how many unitary equivalence classes there can be. In the case that $X$ is a CW complex of dimension at most three, we demonstrate a bijection between the unitary equivalence classes of $n \times n$ normal matrices with characteristic polynomial $\mu$ and elements of the group $(H^2(X))^{n-1}$. Finally, when $X$ is a smooth manifold and we restrict to matrices with smooth entries, we construct a de Rham cohomology class whose nonvanishing is an obstruction to unitary equivalence.

Flowing from intersection product to cup product

We use a vector field flow defined through a cubulation of a closed manifold to reconcile the partially defined commutative product on geometric cochains with the standard cup product on cubical cochains, which is fully defined and commutative only up to coherent homotopies. The interplay between intersection and cup product dates back to the beginnings of homology theory, but, to our knowledge, this result is the first to give an explicit cochain level comparison between these approaches.

Topological invariance of torsion sensitive intersection homology

Torsion sensitive intersection homology was introduced to unify several versions of Poincare duality for stratified spaces into a single theorem. This unified duality theorem holds with ground coefficients in an arbitrary PID and with no local cohomology conditions on the underlying space. In this paper we consider for torsion sensitive intersection homology analogues of another important property of classical intersection homology: topological invariance. In other words, we consider to what extent the defining sheaf complexes of the theory are independent (up to quasi-isomorphism) of choice of stratification. In addition to providing torsion sensitive versions of the existing invariance theorems for classical intersection homology, our techniques provide some new results even in the classical setting.

Two short proofs of the topological invariance of intersection homology

We indicate two short proofs of the Goresky-MacPherson topological invariance of intersection homology. One proof is very short but requires the Goresky-MacPherson support and cosupport axioms; the other is slightly longer but does not require these axioms and so is adaptable to more general perversities.

Intersection homology duality and pairings: singular, PL, and sheaf-theoretic

We compare the sheaf-theoretic and singular chain versions of Poincare duality for intersection homology, showing that they are isomorphic via naturally defined maps. Similarly, we demonstrate the existence of canonical isomorphisms between the singular intersection cohomology cup product, the hypercohomology product induced by the Goresky-MacPherson sheaf pairing, and, for PL pseudomanifolds, the Goresky-MacPherson PL intersection product. We also show that the de Rham isomorphism of Brasselet, Hector, and Saralegi preserves product structures.

Generalizations of intersection homology and perverse sheaves with duality over the integers

We provide a generalization of the Deligne sheaf construction of intersection homology theory, and a corresponding generalization of Poincar\'e duality on pseudomanifolds, such that the Goresky-MacPherson, Goresky-Siegel, and Cappell-Shaneson duality theorems all arise as special cases. Unlike classical intersection homology theory, our duality theorem holds with ground coefficients in an arbitrary PID and with no local cohomology conditions on the underlying space. Self-duality does require local conditions, but our perspective leads to a new class of spaces more general than the Goresky-Siegel IP spaces on which upper-middle perversity intersection homology is self dual. We also examine categories of perverse sheaves that contain our "torsion-sensitive" Deligne sheaves as intermediate extensions.

The chain-level intersection pairing for PL pseudomanifolds revisited

We generalize the PL intersection product for chains on PL manifolds and for intersection chains on PL stratified pseudomanifolds to products of locally finite chains on non-compact spaces that are natural with respect to restriction to open sets. This is necessary to sheafify the intersection product, an essential step in proving duality between the Goresky-MacPherson intersection homology product and the intersection cohomology cup product pairing recently defined by the author and McClure. We also provide a correction to the Goresky-MacPherson proof of a version of Poincar\'e duality on pseudomanifolds that is used in the construction of the intersection product.

Unitary equivalence of normal matrices over topological spaces

Let A and B be normal matrices with coefficients that are continuous complex-valued functions on a topological space X that has the homotopy type of a CW complex, and suppose these matrices have the same distinct eigenvalues at each point of X. We use obstruction theory to establish a necessary and sufficient condition for A and B to be unitarily equivalent. We also determine bounds on the number of possible unitary equivalence classes in terms of cohomological invariants of X.

Stratified and unstratified bordism of pseudomanifolds

We study bordism groups and bordism homology theories based on pseudomanifolds and stratified pseudomanifolds. The main seam of the paper demonstrates that when we uses classes of spaces determined by local link properties, the stratified and unstratified bordism theories are identical; this includes the known examples of pseudomanifold bordism theories, such as bordism of Witt spaces and IP spaces. Along the way, we relate the stratified and unstratified points of view for describing various (stratified) pseudomanifold classes.

The symmetric signature of a Witt space

Witt spaces are pseudomanifolds for which the middle-perversity intersection homology with rational coefficients is self-dual. We give a new construction of the symmetric signature for Witt spaces which is similar in spirit to the construction given by Miscenko for manifolds. Our construction has all of the expected properties, including invariance under stratified homotopy equivalence.

Cup and cap products in intersection (co)homology

We construct cup and cap products in intersection (co)homology with field coefficients. The existence of the cap product allows us to give a new proof of Poincare duality in intersection (co)homology which is similar in spirit to the usual proof for ordinary (co)homology of manifolds.

K-Witt bordism in characteristic 2

This note provides a computation of the bordism groups of K-Witt spaces for fields K with characteristic 2. We provide a complete computation for the unoriented bordism groups. For the oriented bordism groups, a nearly complete computation is provided as well a discussion of the difficulty of resolving a remaining ambiguity in dimensions equivalent to 2 mod 4. This corrects an error in the char(K)=2 case of the author's prior computation of the bordism groups of K-Witt spaces for an arbitrary field K.

Additivity and non-additivity for perverse signatures

A well-known property of the signature of closed oriented 4n-dimensional manifolds is Novikov additivity, which states that if a manifold is split into two manifolds with boundary along an oriented smooth hypersurface, then the signature of the original manifold equals the sum of the signatures of the resulting manifolds with boundary. Wall showed that this property is not true of signatures on manifolds with boundary and that the difference from additivity could be described as a certain Maslov triple index. Perverse signatures are signatures defined for any stratified pseudomanifold, using the intersection homology groups of Goresky and MacPherson. In the case of Witt spaces, the middle perverse signature is the same as the Witt signature. This paper proves a generalization to perverse signatures of Wall's non-additivity theorem for signatures of manifolds with boundary. Under certain topological conditions on the dividing hypersurface,Novikov additivity for perverse signatures may be deduced as a corollary. In particular, Siegel's version of Novikov additivity for Witt signatures is a special case of this corollary.

An elementary illustrated introduction to simplicial sets

This is an expository introduction to simplicial sets and simplicial homotopy theory with particular focus on relating the combinatorial aspects of the theory to their geometric/topological origins. It is intended to be accessible to students familiar with just the fundamentals of algebraic topology.
