The von Neumann inequality for 3x3 matrices

Recent work of Kosiński on the three point Pick interpolation problem on the polydisc proves the von Neumann inequality for 3x3 matrices. We give a detailed explanation of this using several standard reductions---credit for the main result should be attributed to Kosiński.

Integrability and regularity of rational functions

Motivated by recent work in the mathematics and engineering literature, we study integrability and non-tangential regularity on the two-torus for rational functions that are holomorphic on the bidisk. One way to study such rational functions is to fix the denominator and look at the ideal of polynomials in the numerator such that the rational function is square integrable. A concrete list of generators is given for this ideal as well as a precise count of the dimension of the subspace of numerators with a specified bound on bidegree. The dimension count is accomplished by constructing a natural pair of commuting contractions on a finite dimensional Hilbert space and studying their joint generalized eigenspaces. Non-tangential regularity of rational functions on the polydisk is also studied. One result states that rational inner functions on the polydisk have non-tangential limits at every point of the n-torus. An algebraic characterization of higher non-tangential regularity is given. We also make some connections with the earlier material and prove that rational functions on the bidisk which are square integrable on the two-torus are non-tangentially bounded at every point. Several examples are provided.

Unions of Lebesgue spaces and $A_1$ majorants

We study two questions. When does a function belong to the union of Lebesgue spaces and when does a function have an $A_1$ majorant? We show these questions are fundamentally related. For functions restricted to a fixed cube we prove that the following are equivalent: a function belongs to $L^p$ for some $p>1$; the function has an $A_1$ majorant; for any $p>1$ the function belongs to $L^p_w$ for some $A_p$ weight $w$. We also examine the case of functions defined on ${\mathbb R}^n$ and give characterizations of the union of $L^p_w$ over $w$ in $A_p$ and when a function has an $A_1$ majorant on all of ${\mathbb R}^n$.

Cyclic polynomials in two variables

We give a complete characterization of polynomials in two complex variables that are cyclic with respect to the coordinate shifts acting on Dirichlet-type spaces in the bidisk, which include the Hardy space and the Dirichlet space of the bidisk. The cyclicity of a polynomial depends on both the size and nature of the zero set of the polynomial on the distinguished boundary. The techniques in the proof come from real analytic function theory, determinantal representations for stable polynomials, and harmonic analysis on curves

Canonical Agler Decompositions and Transfer Function Realizations

A seminal result of Agler proves that the natural de Branges-Rovnyak kernel function associated to a bounded analytic function on the bidisk can be decomposed into two shift-invariant pieces. Agler's decomposition is non-constructive-a problem remedied by work of Ball-Sadosky-Vinnikov, which uses scattering systems to produce Agler decompositions through concrete Hilbert space geometry. This method, while constructive, so far has not revealed the rich structure shown to be present for special classes of functions-inner and rational inner functions. In this paper, we show that most of the important structure present in these special cases extends to general bounded analytic functions. We give characterizations of all Agler decompositions, we prove the existence of coisometric transfer function realizations with natural state spaces, and we characterize when Schur functions on the bidisk possess analytic extensions past the boundary in terms of associated Hilbert spaces.

Zero-free polynomial approximation on a chain of Jordan domains

On a compact subset of the plane with connected complement, is it possible to uniformly approximate a continuous function, holomorphic and non-vanishing on the interior, with polynomials non-vanishing on the entire compact set? In this brief note, we recall the surprising connection between this question and the Riemann hypothesis and proceed to provide an affirmative answer for a "chain" of Jordan domains.

Polynomials with no zeros on a face of the bidisk

We present a Hilbert space geometric approach to the problem of characterizing the positive bivariate trigonometric polynomials that can be represented as the square of a two variable polynomial possessing a certain stability requirement, namely no zeros on a face of the bidisk. Two different characterizations are given using a Hilbert space structure naturally associated to the trigonometric polynomial; one is in terms of a certain orthogonal decomposition the Hilbert space must possess called the "split-shift orthogonality condition" and another is an operator theoretic or matrix condition closely related to an earlier characterization due to the first two authors. This approach allows several refinements of the characterization and it also allows us to prove a sums of squares decomposition which at once generalizes the Cole-Wermer sums of squares result for two variable stable polynomials as well as a sums of squares result related to the Schur-Cohn method for counting the roots of a univariate polynomial in the unit disk.

Inner functions on the bidisk and associated Hilbert spaces

Matrix valued inner functions on the bidisk have a number of natural subspaces of the Hardy space on the torus associated to them. We study their relationship to Agler decompositions, regularity up to the boundary, and restriction maps into one variable spaces. We give a complete description of the important spaces associated to matrix rational inner functions. The dimension of some of these spaces can be computed in a straightforward way, and this ends up having an application to the study of three variable rational inner functions. Examples are included to highlight the differences between the scalar and matrix cases.

Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation on distinguished varieties in the bidisk

This article treats Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation in the setting of a special class of algebraic curves called distinguished varieties. An interpolation theorem, along with additional operator theoretic results, is given using a family of reproducing kernels naturally associated to the variety. The examples of the Neil parabola and doubly connected domains are discussed.

Uchiyama's lemma and the John-Nirenberg inequality

Using integral formulas based on Green's theorem and in particular a lemma of Uchiyama, we give simple proofs of comparisons of different BMO norms without using the John-Nirenberg inequality while we also give a simple proof of the strong John-Nirenberg inequality. Along the way we prove the inclusions of BMOA in the dual of H^1 and BMO in the dual of real H^1.

Orthogonality relations for bivariate Bernstein-Szegő measures

The orthogonality properties of certain subspaces associated with bivariate Bernstein-Szegő measures are considered. It is shown that these spaces satisfy more orthogonality relations than expected from the relations that define them. The results are used to prove a Christoffel-Darboux like formula for these measures.

Schur-Agler class rational inner functions on the tridisk

We prove two results with regard to rational inner functions in the Schur-Agler class of the tridisk. Every rational inner function of degree (n,1,1) is in the Schur-Agler class, and every rational inner function of degree (n,m,1) is in the Schur-Agler class after multiplication by a monomial of sufficiently high degree.

A refined Agler decomposition and geometric applications

We prove a refined Agler decomposition for bounded analytic functions on the bidisk and show how it can be used to reprove an interesting result of Guo et al. related to extending holomorphic functions without increasing their norm. In addition, we give a new treatment of Heath and Suffridge's characterization of holomorphic retracts on the polydisk.

Stable symmetric polynomials and the Schur-Agler class

We call a multivariable polynomial an Agler denominator if it is the denominator of a rational inner function in the Schur-Agler class, an important subclass of the bounded analytic functions on the polydisk. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a multi-affine, symmetric, and stable polynomial to be an Agler denominator and prove several consequences. We also sharpen a result due to Kummert related to three variable, multi-affine, stable polynomials.

Rational inner functions in the Schur-Agler class of the polydisk

Every two variable rational inner function on the bidisk has a special representation called a transfer function realization. It is well known and related to important ideas in operator theory that this does not extend to three or more variables on the polydisk. We study the class of rational inner functions on the polydisk which do possess a transfer function realization (the Schur-Agler class) and investigate minimality in their representations. Schur-Agler class rational inner functions in three or more variables cannot be represented in a way that is as minimal as two variables might suggest.

Kernel decompositions for Schur functions on the polydisk

A certain kernel (sometimes called the Pick kernel) associated to Schur functions on the disk is always positive semi-definite. A generalization of this fact is well-known for Schur functions on the polydisk. In this article, we show that the Pick kernel on the polydisk has a great deal of structure beyond being positive semi-definite. It can always be split into two kernels possessing certain shift invariance properties.

Polynomials defining distinguished varieties

Using a sums of squares formula for two variable polynomials with no zeros on the bidisk, we are able to give a new proof of a representation for distinguished varieties. For distinguished varieties with no singularities on the two-torus, we are able to provide extra details about the representation formula and use this to prove a bounded extension theorem.

Polynomials with no zeros on the bidisk

We prove a detailed sums of squares formula for two variable polynomials with no zeros on the bidisk $\mathbb{D}^2$ extending previous versions of such a formula due to Cole-Wermer and Geronimo-Woerdeman. The formula is related to the Christoffel-Darboux formula for orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle, but the extension to two variables involves issues of uniqueness in the formula and the study of ideals of two variable orthogonal polynomials with respect to a positive Borel measure on the torus which may have infinite mass. We present applications to two variable Fejér-Riesz factorizations, analytic extension theorems for a class of bordered curves called distinguished varieties, and Pick interpolation on the bidisk.
