Tensor-triangular fields: Ruminations

We examine the concept of field in tensor-triangular geometry. We gather examples and discuss possible approaches, while highlighting open problems. As the construction of residue tt-fields remains elusive, we instead produce suitable homological tensor-functors to Grothendieck categories.

The frame of smashing tensor-ideals

Given a tensor-triangulated category $T$, we prove that every flat tensor-idempotent in the module category over $T^c$ (the compacts) comes from a unique smashing ideal in $T$. We deduce that the lattice of smashing ideals forms a frame.

The derived category of the projective line

We examine the localizing subcategories of the derived category of quasi-coherent sheaves on the projective line over a field. We provide a complete classification of all such subcategories which arise as the kernel of a cohomological functor to a Grothendieck category.

Complete Boolean algebras are Bousfield lattices

Given a complete Heyting algebra we construct an algebraic tensor triangulated category whose Bousfield lattice is the Booleanization of the given Heyting algebra. As a consequence we deduce that any complete Boolean algebra is the Bousfield lattice of some tensor triangulated category. Using the same ideas we then give two further examples illustrating some interesting behaviour of the Bousfield lattice.

The prime spectra of relative stable module categories

For a finite group $G$ and an arbitrary commutative ring $R$, Broué has placed a Frobenius exact structure on the category of finitely generated $RG$-modules by taking the exact sequences to be those that split upon restriction to the trivial subgroup. The corresponding stable category is then tensor triangulated. In this paper we examine the case $R=S/t^n$, where $S$ is a discrete valuation ring having uniformising parameter $t$. We prove that the prime ideal spectrum (in the sense of Balmer) of this `relative' version of the stable module category of $RG$ is a disjoint union of $n$ copies of that for $kG$, where $k$ is the residue field of $S$.

On the graded dual numbers, arcs, and non-crossing partitions of the integers

We give a combinatorial model for the bounded derived category of graded modules over the dual numbers in terms of arcs on the integer line with a point at infinity. Using this model we describe the lattice of thick subcategories of the bounded derived category, and of the perfect complexes, in terms of non-crossing partitions. We also make some comments on the symmetries of these lattices, exceptional collections, and the analogous problem for the unbounded derived category.

Enrichment and representability for triangulated categories

Given a fixed tensor triangulated category S we consider triangulated categories T together with an S-enrichment which is compatible with the triangulated structure of T. It is shown that, in this setting, an enriched analogue of Brown representability holds when both S and T are compactly generated. A natural class of examples of such enriched triangulated categories categories are module categories over separable monoids in S. In this context we prove a version of the Eilenberg-Watts theorem for exact coproduct and copower preserving S-functors, i.e., we show that any such functor between the module categories of separable monoids in S is given by tensoring with a bimodule.

The local-to-global principle for triangulated categories via dimension functions

We formulate a general abstract criterion for verifying the local-to-global principle for a rigidly-compactly generated tensor triangulated category. Our approach is based upon an inductive construction using dimension functions. Using our criterion we give a new proof of the theorem that the local-to-global principle holds for such categories when they have a model and the spectrum of the compacts is noetherian. As further applications we give a new set of conditions on the spectrum of the compacts that guarantee the local-to-global principle holds and use this to classify localising subcategories in the derived category of a semi-artinian absolutely flat ring.

Comparisons between singularity categories and relative stable categories of finite groups

We consider the relationship between the relative stable category of Benson, Iyengar, and Krause and the usual singularity category for group algebras with coefficients in a commutative noetherian ring. When the coefficient ring is self-injective we show that these categories share a common, relatively large, Verdier quotient. At the other extreme, when the coefficient ring has finite global dimension, there is a semi-orthogonal decomposition, due to Poulton, relating the two categories. We prove that this decomposition is partially compatible with the monoidal structure and study the morphism it induces on spectra.

A tour of support theory for triangulated categories through tensor triangular geometry

These notes attempt to give a short survey of the approach to support theory and the study of lattices of triangulated subcategories through the machinery of tensor triangular geometry. One main aim is to introduce the material necessary to state and prove the local-to-global principle. In particular, we discuss Balmer's construction of the spectrum, generalised Rickard idempotents and support for compactly generated triangulated categories, and actions of tensor triangulated categories. Several examples are also given along the way. These notes are based on a series of lectures given during the Spring 2015 program on 'Interactions between Representation Theory, Algebraic Topology and Commutative Algebra' (IRTATCA) at the CRM in Barcelona.

Derived categories of representations of small categories over commutative noetherian rings

We study the derived categories of small categories over commutative noetherian rings. Our main result is a parametrization of the localizing subcategories in terms of the spectrum of the ring and the localizing subcategories over residue fields. In the special case of representations of Dynkin quivers over a commutative noetherian ring we give a complete description of the localizing subcategories of the derived category, a complete description of the thick subcategories of the perfect complexes and show the telescope conjecture holds. We also present some results concerning the telescope conjecture more generally.

Gorenstein homological algebra and universal coefficient theorems

We study criteria for a ring - or more generally, for a small category - to be Gorenstein and for a module over it to be of finite projective dimension. The goal is to unify the universal coefficient theorems found in the literature and to develop a machinery for proving new ones. Among the universal coefficient theorems covered by our methods we find, besides all the classic examples, several exotic examples arising from the KK-theory of C*-algebras and also Neeman's Brown-Adams representability theorem for compactly generated categories.

The derived category of a graded Gorenstein ring

We give an exposition and generalization of Orlov's theorem on graded Gorenstein rings. We show the theorem holds for non-negatively graded rings which are Gorenstein in an appropriate sense and whose degree zero component is an arbitrary non-commutative right noetherian ring of finite global dimension. A short treatment of some foundations for local cohomology and Grothendieck duality at this level of generality is given in order to prove the theorem. As an application we give an equivalence of the derived category of a commutative complete intersection with the homotopy category of graded matrix factorizations over a related ring.

Strong generators in tensor triangulated categories

We show that in an essentially small rigid tensor triangulated category with connected Balmer spectrum there are no proper non-zero thick tensor ideals admitting strong generators. This proves, for instance, that the category of perfect complexes over a commutative ring without non-trivial idempotents has no proper non-zero thick subcategories that are strongly generated.

Duality for bounded derived categories of complete intersections

We show that every thick subcategory of the singularity category of a complete intersection ring is self dual. We also prove the analogous statement for thick subcategories of the bounded derived category and give applications to the symmetry of vanishing of cohomology. These results are also proved for certain complete intersection schemes.

Derived categories of absolutely flat rings

Let S be a commutative ring with topologically noetherian spectrum and let R be the absolutely flat approximation of S. We prove that subsets of the spectrum of R parametrise the localising subcategories of D(R). Moreover, we prove the telescope conjecture holds for D(R). We also consider unbounded derived categories of absolutely flat rings which are not semi-artinian and exhibit an example of a cohomological Bousfield class that is not a Bousfield class.

Module categories for group algebras over commutative rings

We develop a suitable version of the stable module category of a finite group G over an arbitrary commutative ring k. The purpose of the construction is to produce a compactly generated triangulated category whose compact objects are the finitely presented kG-modules. The main idea is to form a localisation of the usual version of the stable module category with respect to the filtered colimits of weakly injective modules. There is also an analogous version of the homotopy category of weakly injective kG-modules and a recollement relating the stable category, the homotopy category, and the derived category of kG-modules.

Filtrations via tensor actions

We extend work of Balmer, associating filtrations of essentially small tensor triangulated categories to certain dimension functions, to the setting of actions of rigidly-compactly generated tensor triangulated categories on compactly generated triangulated categories. We show that the towers of triangles associated to such a filtration can be used to produce filtrations of Gorenstein injective quasi-coherent sheaves on Gorenstein schemes. This extends and gives a new proof of a result of Enochs and Huang. In the case of local complete intersections a further refinement of this filtration is given and we comment on some special properties of the associated spectral sequence in this case.
