Reviving Reflection-in-Action: Instilling Designerly Thinking in AI-Supported Ideation through Multimodal Prompting

Current AI-powered creativity support tools (AI-CSTs) primarily use text prompting to generate solution-oriented outputs. However, the potential value of multimodal prompting in designer-AI interaction, specifically the introduction of productive friction to encourage iteration and reflection, has not been fully explored. To address this, we developed SketchifAI, a prototype AI-CST, and evaluated it with design students. In a mixed-methods, within-participants study, we examined how different input modalities (text, sketch, and sketch-plus-tags) affected design students' perceived ability to express their intent, their perception of creativity support, and their divergent thinking performance. Our preliminary findings suggest that the sketch modality tended to enhance fluency, with inconclusive evidence for differences in variety, originality, or quality compared to text modality. Yet, paradoxically, participants showed a strong preference for text prompting. We discuss how AI tools might be designed to reintroduce reflection-through-sketching, ensuring that designer-AI interaction supports, rather than erodes, essential design skills in students.

Imagining Design Workflows in Agentic AI Futures

As designers become familiar with Generative AI, a new concept is emerging: Agentic AI. While generative AI produces output in response to prompts, agentic AI systems promise to perform mundane tasks autonomously, potentially freeing designers to focus on what they love: being creative. But how do designers feel about integrating agentic AI systems into their workflows? Through design fiction, we investigated how designers want to interact with a collaborative agentic AI platform. Ten professional designers imagined and discussed collaborating with an AI agent to organise inspiration sources and ideate. Our findings highlight the roles AI agents can play in supporting designers, the division of authority between humans and AI, and how designers' intent can be explained to AI agents beyond prompts. We synthesise our findings into a conceptual framework that identifies authority distribution among humans and AI agents and discuss directions for utilising AI agents in future design workflows.

Studying Self-Care with Generative AI Tools: Lessons for Design

The rise of generative AI presents new opportunities for the understanding and practice of self-care through its capability to generate varied content, including self-care suggestions via text and images, and engage in dialogue with users over time. However, there are also concerns about accuracy and trustworthiness of self-care advice provided via AI. This paper reports our findings from workshops, diaries, and interviews with five researchers and 24 participants to explore their experiences and use of generative AI for self-care. We analyze our findings to present a framework for the use of generative AI to support five types of self-care, - advice seeking, mentorship, resource creation, social simulation, and therapeutic self-expression - mapped across two dimensions - expertise and modality. We discuss how these practices shift the role of technologies for self-care from merely offering information to offering personalized advice and supporting creativity for reflection, and we offer suggestions for using the framework to investigate new self-care designs.

ICTs Effect on Parents Feelings of Presence, Awareness, and Connectedness during a Childs Hospitalization

This study evaluates how off-the-shelf commercial ICTs can contribute to creating a feeling of Presence, Connectedness, and Awareness between parents and their hospitalized child. Thematic analysis and descriptive statistics are used to analyse qualitative and quantitative data collected through a survey of thirty eight parents whose children were admitted to the Royal Childrens Hospital. Through analysis of data, Presence is found to be less facilitated through ICT than are Awareness and Connectedness. Although participants reported that voice call on mobile phones was the most common way of communication, their ideal was a video-chat application such as Skype, or a combination of Skype and TV to facilitate feeling of Presence. A strong desire to use rich media such as video-audio to help them have a greater feeling of Presence was identified in parents responses to the questionnaire.
