Semiclassical dynamics and coherent soliton ensembles in the derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation with periodic initial conditions

The semiclassical limit of the derivative nonlinear Schrodinger equation with periodic initial conditions is studied analytically and numerically. The spectrum of the associated scattering problem for a certain class of initial conditions, referred to as periodic single-lobe potentials, is numerically computed, and it is shown that the spectrum becomes confined to the real and imaginary axes or the spectral parameter in the semiclassical limit. A formal Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin expansion is computed for the scattering eigenfunctions, which allows one to obtain asymptotic expressions for the number, location and size of the spectral bands and gaps. The results of these calculations suggest that, in the semiclassical limit, all excitations in the spectrum become effective solitons. Finally, the analytical predictions are compared with direct numerical simulations as well as with numerical calculations of the Lax spectrum, and the results are shown to be in excellent agreement.

Spectral theory for non-self-adjoint Dirac operators with periodic potentials and inverse scattering transform for the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation with periodic boundary conditions

We formulate the inverse spectral theory for a non-self-adjoint one-dimensional Dirac operator associated periodic potentials via a Riemann-Hilbert problem approach. We use the resulting formalism to solve the initial value problem for the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation. We establish a uniqueness theorem for the solutions of the Riemann-Hilbert problem, which provides a new method for obtaining the potential from the spectral data. The formalism applies for both finite- and infinite-genus potentials. As in the defocusing case, the formalism shows that only a single set of Dirichlet eigenvalues is needed in order to uniquely reconstruct the potential of the Dirac operator and the corresponding solution of the focusing NLS equation.

On Maxwell-Bloch systems with inhomogeneous broadening and one-sided nonzero background

The inverse scattering transform is developed to solve the Maxwell-Bloch system of equations that describes two-level systems with inhomogeneous broadening, in the case of optical pulses that do not vanish at infinity in the future. The direct problem, which is formulated in terms of a suitably-defined uniformization variable, combines features of the formalism with decaying as well as non-decaying fields. The inverse problem is formulated in terms of a $2\times 2$ matrix Riemann-Hilbert problem. A novel aspect of the problem is that no reflectionless solutions can exist, and solitons are always accompanied by radiation. At the same time, it is also shown that, when the medium is initially in the ground state, the radiative components of the solutions decay upon propagation into the medium, giving rise to an asymptotically reflectionless states. Like what happens when the optical pulse decays rapidly in the distant past and the distant future, a medium that is initially excited decays to the stable ground state as $t\to \infty$ and for sufficiently large propagation distances. Finally, the asymptotic state of the medium and certain features of the optical pulse inside the medium are considered, and the emergence of a transition region upon propagation in the medium is briefly discussed.

High-order accurate schemes for Maxwell's equations with nonlinear active media and material interfaces

We describe a fourth-order accurate finite-difference time-domain scheme for solving dispersive Maxwell's equations with nonlinear multi-level carrier kinetics models. The scheme is based on an efficient single-step three time-level modified equation approach for Maxwell's equations in second-order form for the electric field coupled to ODEs for the polarization vectors and population densities of the atomic levels. The resulting scheme has a large CFL-one time-step. Curved interfaces between different materials are accurately treated with curvilinear grids and compatibility conditions. A novel hierarchical modified equation approach leads to an explicit scheme that does not require any nonlinear iterations. The hierarchical approach at interfaces leads to local updates at the interface with no coupling in the tangential directions. Complex geometry is treated with overset grids. Numerical stability is maintained using high-order upwind dissipation designed for Maxwell's equations in second-order form. The scheme is carefully verified for a number of two and three-dimensional problems. The resulting numerical model with generalized dispersion and arbitrary nonlinear multi-level system can be used for many plasmonic applications such as for ab initio time domain modeling of nonlinear engineered materials for nanolasing applications, where nano-patterned plasmonic dispersive arrays are used to enhance otherwise weak nonlinearity in the active media.

Improved effective linearization of nonlinear Schrödinger waves by increasing nonlinearity

From among the waves whose dynamics are governed by the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation, we find a robust, spatiotemporally disordered family, in which waves initialized with increasing amplitudes, on average, over long time scales, effectively evolve as ever more weakly coupled collections of plane waves. In particular, the relative amount of energy contained in their coupling decays to zero with increasing wave amplitude.

Asymmetric behavior of surface waves induced by an underlying interfacial wave

We develop a weakly nonlinear model to study the spatiotemporal manifestation and the dynamical behavior of surface waves in the presence of an underlying interfacial solitary wave in a two-layer fluid system. We show that interfacial solitary-wave solutions of this model can capture the ubiquitous broadening of large-amplitude internal waves in the ocean. In addition, the model is capable of capturing three asymmetric behaviors of surface waves: (i) Surface waves become short in wavelength at the leading edge and long at the trailing edge of an underlying interfacial solitary wave. (ii) Surface waves propagate towards the trailing edge with a relatively small group velocity, and towards the leading edge with a relatively large group velocity. (iii) Surface waves become high in amplitude at the leading edge and low at the trailing edge. These asymmetric behaviors can be well quantified in the theoretical framework of ray-based theories. Our model is relatively easily tractable both theoretically and numerically, thus facilitating the understanding of the surface signature of the observed internal waves.

Modulation-resonance mechanism for surface waves in a two-layer fluid system

We propose a Boussinesq-type model to study the surface/interfacial wave manifestation of an underlying, slowly-varying, long-wavelength, baroclinic flow in a two-layer, density-stratified system. The results of our model show numerically that, under strong nonlinearity, surface waves, with their typical wavenumber being the resonant $k_{\mathrm{res}}$, can be generated locally at the leading edge of the underlying slowly-varying, long-wavelength baroclinic flow. Here, the resonant $k_{\mathrm{res}}$ satisfies the class 3 triad resonance condition among two short-mode waves and one long-mode wave in which all waves propagate in the same direction. Moreover, when the slope of the baroclinic flow is sufficiently small, only one spatially-localized large-amplitude surface wave packet can be generated at the leading edge. This localized surface wave packet becomes high in amplitude and large in group velocity after the interaction with its surrounding waves. These results are qualitatively consistent with various experimental observations including resonant surface waves at the leading edge of an internal wave. Subsequently, we propose a mechanism, referred to as the modulation-resonance mechanism, underlying these surface phenomena, based on our numerical simulations. The proposed modulation-resonance mechanism combines the linear modulation (ray-based) theory for the spatiotemporal asymmetric behavior of surface waves and the nonlinear class 3 triad resonance theory for the energy focusing of surface waves around the resonant wavenumber $k_{\mathrm{res}}$ in Fourier space.
