Atomistic Framework for Glassy Polymer Viscoelasticity Across Twenty Frequency Decades

Glassy polymers are central to engineering applications, yet their viscoelastic response over broad frequency and temperature ranges remains difficult to characterize. We extend non-affine deformation theory by incorporating a time-dependent memory kernel within the Generalized Langevin Equation for atomistic non-affine motions, yielding frequency-dependent mechanical response. Applied to poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), the method captures the shear modulus and relaxation spectrum across more than twenty decades in frequency, from hundreds of terahertz to the millihertz regime, thus bridging polymer mechanics from ordinary to extreme scales. Our predictions show quantitative consistency with independent estimates from oscillatory-shear molecular dynamics, Brillouin scattering, ultrasonic spectroscopy, Split-Hopkinson testing, and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), demonstrating a unified theoretical-computational route for multiscale characterization of polymer glasses.

Benefits of direct electron detection and PCA for EELS investigation of organic photovoltaics materials

Electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) is a powerful tool for imaging chemical variations at the nanoscale. Here, we investigate a polymer/organic small molecule-blend used as absorber layer in an organic solar cell and employ EELS for distinguishing polymer donor and small molecule acceptor domains in the nanostructured blend based on elemental maps of light elements, such as nitrogen, sulfur or fluorine. Especially for beam sensitive samples, the electron dose needs to be limited, therefore optimized acquisition and data processing strategies are required. We compare data acquired on a post-column energy filter with a direct electron detection camera to data from a conventional CCD camera on the same filter and we investigate the impact of statistical data processing methods (principal components analysis, PCA) on acquired spectra and elemental maps extracted from spectrum images. Our work shows, that the quality of spectra on a direct electron detection camera is far superior to conventional CCD imaging, and thereby allows clear identification of ionization edges and the fine structure of these edges. For the quality of the elemental maps, the application of PCA is essential to allow a clear separation between the donor and acceptor phase in the bulk heterojunction absorber layer of a non-fullerene organic solar cell.

Mixed side-chain geometries for aggregation control of poly(fluorene-alt-bithiophene) and their effects on photophysics and charge transport

In organic optoelectronics, order of conjugated molecules is required for good charge transport, but strong aggregation behavior may generate grain boundaries and trapping, opposing those benefits. Side chains on a polymer's backbone are major reason for and also tool to modify its morphological characteristics. In this report, we show on the example poly(9,9-dioctylfluorenyl-co-bithiophene) (F8T2) that by a combination of two types of side-chains on the backbone of equal number of carbons, one promoting crystallization, another hindering it, organization of the main chains can be controlled, without changing its major properties. We compare the traditional F8T2 derivative with octyl substituent with two modified species, one containing solely 2-ethylhexyl side-chains and another with both types randomly distributed. Thermal characteristics, photophysics and morphology are compared and effects on film formation and charge transport in bulk-heterojunction blends demonstrated on photovoltaic devices utilizing F8T2s as donor and the fullerene derivative ICBA as acceptor material.
