Gaudin Models and Bending Flows: a Geometrical Point of View

In this paper we discuss the bihamiltonian formulation of the (rational XXX) Gaudin models of spin-spin interaction, generalized to the case of sl(r)-valued spins. In particular, we focus on the homogeneous models. We find a pencil of Poisson brackets that recursively define a complete set of integrals of the motion, alternative to the set of integrals associated with the 'standard' Lax representation of the Gaudin model. These integrals, in the case of su(2), coincide wih the Hamiltonians of the 'bending flows' in the moduli space of polygons in Euclidean space introduced by Kapovich and Millson. We finally address the problem of separability of these flows and explicitly find separation coordinates and separation relations for the r=2 case.

Separation of variables for bi-Hamiltonian systems

We address the problem of the separation of variables for the Hamilton-Jacobi equation within the theoretical scheme of bi-Hamiltonian geometry. We use the properties of a special class of bi-Hamiltonian manifolds, called omega-N manifolds, to give intrisic tests of separability (and Staeckel separability) for Hamiltonian systems. The separation variables are naturally associated with the geometrical structures of the omega-N manifold itself. We apply these results to bi-Hamiltonian systems of the Gel'fand-Zakharevich type and we give explicit procedures to find the separated coordinates and the separation relations.

A note on the super Krichever map

We consider the geometrical aspects of the Krichever map in the context of Jacobian Super KP hierarchy. We use the representation of the hierarchy based on the Faa` di bruno recursion relations, considered as the cocycle condition for the natural double complex associated with the deformations of super Krichever data. Our approach is based on the construction of the universal super divisor (of degree g), and a local universal family of geometric data which give the map into the Super Grassmannian.

A Bi-Hamiltonian Theory for Stationary KdV Flows and their Separability

We present a fairly new and comprehensive approach to the study of stationary flows of the Korteweg-de Vries hierarchy. They are obtained by means of a double restriction process from a dynamical system in an infinite number of variables. This process naturally provides us with a Lax representation of the flows, which is used to find their bi-Hamiltonian formulation. Then we prove the separability of these flows making use of their bi-Hamiltonian structure, and we show that the variables of separation are supplied by the Poisson pair.

Super KP equations and Darboux transformations: another perspective on the Jacobian Super KP hierarchy

We generalize to the supersymmetric case the representation of the KP hierarchy as a set of conservation laws for the generating series of the conserved densities. We show that the hierarchy so obtained is isomorphic to the JSKP of Mulase and Rabin. We identify its ``bosonic content'' with the so-called Darboux-KP hierarchy, which geometrically encompasses the theory of Darboux-Bäcklund transformations, and is an extension both of the KP theory and of the modified KP theory. Finally, we show how the hierarchy can be linearized and how the supersymmetric counterpart of a wide class of rational solution can be quite explicitly worked out.

Bihamiltonian Geometry, Darboux Coverings, and Linearization of the KP Hierarchy

We use ideas of the geometry of bihamiltonian manifolds, developed by Gel'fand and Zakharevich, to study the KP equations. In this approach they have the form of local conservation laws, and can be traded for a system of ordinary differential equations of Riccati type, which we call the Central System. We show that the latter can be linearized by means of a Darboux covering, and we use this procedure as an alternative technique to construct rational solutions of the KP equations.

Bihamiltonian Reductions and W_n Algebras

We discuss the geometry of the Marsden-Ratiu reduction theorem for a bihamiltonian manifold. We consider the case of the manifolds associated with the Gel'fand-Dickey theory, i.e., loop algebras over sl(n+1). We provide an explicit identification, tailored on the MR reduction, of the Adler-Gel'fand-Dickey brackets with the Poisson brackets on the MR-reduced bihamiltonian manifold N. Such an identification relies on a suitable immersion of the space of sections of the cotangent bundle of N into the algebra of pseudo differential operators connected to geometrical features of the theory of (classical) W_n algebras.

A Note on Fractional KdV Hierarchies

We introduce a hierarchy of mutually commuting dynamical systems on a finite number of Laurent series. This hierarchy can be seen as a prolongation of the KP hierarchy, or a ``reduction'' in which the space coordinate is identified with an arbitrarily chosen time of a bigger dynamical system. Fractional KdV hierarchies are gotten by means of further reductions, obtained by constraining the Laurent series. The case of sl(3)^2 and its bihamiltonian structure are discussed in detail.

Krichever Maps, Faa' di Bruno Polynomials, and Cohomology in KP Theory

We study the geometrical meaning of the Faa' di Bruno polynomials in the context of KP theory. They provide a basis in a subspace W of the universal Grassmannian associated to the KP hierarchy. When W comes from geometrical data via the Krichever map, the Faa' di Bruno recursion relation turns out to be the cocycle condition for (the Welters hypercohomology group describing) the deformations of the dynamical line bundle on the spectral curve together with the meromorphic sections which give rise to the Krichever map. Starting from this, one sees that the whole KP hierarchy has a similar cohomological meaning.

Darboux Coverings and Rational Reductions of the KP Hierarchy

We use the method of Darboux coverings to discuss the invariant submanifolds of the KP equations, presented as conservation laws in the space of monic Laurent series in the spectral parameter (the space of the Hamiltonian densities). We identify a special class of these submanifolds with the rational invariant submanifolds entering matrix models of $2D$--gravity, recently characterized by Dickey and Krichever. Four examples of the general procedure are provided.

Toda Field Theory as a Clue to the Geometry of $W_n$--Gravity

We discuss geometrical aspects of Toda Fields generalizing the links between Liouville gravity and uniformization of Riemann surfaces of genus greater than one. The framework is the interplay between the hermitian and the holomorphic geometry of vector bundles on such Riemann surfaces. Pointing out how Toda fields can be considered as equivalent to Higgs systems, we show how the theory of Variations of Hodge Structures enters the game inducing local holomorphic embeddings of Riemann surfaces into homogeneous spaces. The relations of such constructions with previous realizations of $W_n$--geometries are briefly discussed.
